This week on Critical Arcade, Dave and Nick dust off their PS1 nostalgia goggles and dive headfirst into the wonderfully weird and rhythmically chaotic world of PaRappa the Rapper. Released in 1996, this cult classic rhythm game has players rapping their way through everything from martial arts lessons to cake-baking catastrophes—all in the name of love. Our hero, PaRappa, may be made of paper, but his heart is all in, and so are our hosts... kind of.Join Dave and Nick as they try to help PaRappa win the affections of the sunflower-haired Sunny Funny by proving he can drive, cook, and hold his own in a freestyle battle with a moose in a bathroom line. (Yes, really.) Along the way, they'll meet an unforgettable cast of characters including the wise and aggressive Chop Chop Master Onion, the laid-back moose, Instructor Mooselini, and the hilariously unhinged Master Baker Cheap Cheap. But not everything goes smoothly. Dave struggles to stay on beat and ends up rapping like a confused metronome, while Nick becomes dangerously obsessed with the flea market level and refuses to stop quoting it at every opportunity. Can they both “kick, punch” their way into the coveted "Cool" rating, or will they end up hopelessly stuck in “Awful” territory, forever doomed to repeat verses with zero swag? From its infectious soundtrack to its bold, cut-out animation style, PaRappa the Rapper is a quirky reminder of a time when video games were allowed to be unapologetically weird—and our hosts wouldn't have it any other way. So grab your beanie, warm up your vocal cords, and remember: you gotta believe! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this episode of the Bucket List Gamers we're once again addressing childhood trauma, as we discuss 1996's PS1 'classic' PaRappa the Rapper.Touted as the first true rhythm game, PaRappa the Rapper sees a paper thin dog rap his way through five gruelling levels in order to impress a sentient Sunflower called Sunny Funny.Believe us when we tell you this BARELY scrapes the surface of just how weird this game truly is... but is it any good?We also talk about the latest big announcement from Sony, and whether the Quiddich game is any good (spoilers... it isn't.)Enjoy! My guest today is Masaya Matsuura, a Japanese musician and game designer widely considered to be the inventor of rhythm action video games. Born in Osaka City, music ran in the family; his father often performed with his guitar in clubs around Shinagawa Station in Tokyo. My guest was an unruly student until he discovered a love of keyboards and synthesisers, and found his people. in 1983 he formed Psy*s (pronounced ‘Saiz'), a progressive pop band fronted by the signer Mami Yasunori, which soon signed to Sony Music.Ten studio albums followed, and in 1994 my guest secured a budget to create a Simon Says-style rhythm game featuring an anthropomorphic, rapping dog. PaRappa the Rapper become an international smash his and led to a series of follow-ups: the guitar-based UmJammaLammy, the experimental wireframe project Vib-Ribbon, and Mojibribbon, a music game that played with calligraphic art.In recent years my guest has retreated from the video game business, focusing again on his music, and live events where he plays rare vinyl records, including tracks from the video games he has made, to an audience.Links:Cobalt Green, 1984, Masaya Matsuura E.P. -- Listen on Soundcloud.Pingu Rap/ ピングー ラップ vinyl re-release by Tower Records. Roddy Nikpour talks with Canadian author Mike Sholars about the 1997 Playstation game PaRappa the Rapper, in which a lovesick cartoon dog raps his way through teenage insecurity. It started a dynasty of rhythm-based games, illustrating how hip-hop — and Black culture at large — set the stage for other commercially successful productions. Written and produced by Roddy Nikpour. In Episode 6, Vanessa and Emily delve into two wild and wacky narratives about love and life: The Night is Short Walk on Girl and PaRappa the Rapper. How do these two pieces of creative media connect? Why aren't there more Rom Com video games? What is the hardest level in PaRappa the Rapper? And take a shot everytime Pharuhad (Vanessa's cat) chimes in during the podcast. The Night is Short Walk on Girl is available on Amazon Prime Video and Youtube for rental; you can find PaRappa the Rapper remastered on the PS4 & PS5 digital store.

Punch! It's all in the mind...including that song, that's almost 100% stuck in your head now. We're kicking the year off by talking PaRappa the Rapper! I always wanted to play this one back in the day, but it was always rented when I'd go to Blockbuster. I finally gave it a chance over the holidays, and while I'm 100% convinced it was written and designed by people on drugs, it didn't take away from the fact that it's charming, hilarious, and pretty damned fun. The guy that started this stupid show with me back in 2018, my buddy Chris, gave me a call to rap (see what I did there?) about PaRappa. He even spit some funky lyrics himself, and we had a great time talking about one of the original PlayStation's flagship titles. And before we crack crack crack the egg into the bowl, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, someone asks if we'll ever do another guest hosted episode like the Majora's Mask show from last year. How do I decide which games I'm gonna play for the podcast out of the hundreds (literally) of suggestions I get from everyone? And what's the deal with "purple monkey dishwasher"? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 old school rhythm games: Um Jammer Lammy, Bust-A-Groove, and Space Channel 5.
