We are back in New Sweden. In 1638, shortly after establishing Fort Christina at the site of today's Wilmington, Delaware, Peter Minuit would die in a hurricane on the way back to Sweden. The settlers left behind would go a year and half before another supply ship came, but they would survive with remarkable pluck. They were well-housed, because the Finns among them would introduce the log cabin to these shores, and they would trade effectively with the Lenape and Susquehannock nations. Then in 1643 a new governor would arrive, Johan Printz, a 400-pound giant of a man who would boot out the New English who tried to settle on the Delaware, and keep the pressure on the Dutch who also claimed both sides of that river. Under Printz's authoritarian and also competent administration, New Sweden would prosper, go on a building boom, and explore the interior of Pennsylvania, all in spite of very little help from home. The Dutch under Willem Kieft - we've met him before - wouldn't challenge New Sweden in this period because they were under pressure from the New English to the east and the Indian groups around Manhattan. Then, in 1647, Pieter Stuyvesant would arrive to govern New Netherland, and everything would change again. Sweden's greatest king, Gustavus Adolphus, aspires for Sweden to become a maritime and commercial power in the Atlantic, and engages Dutch entrepreneurs to advise him and his councilors how to do it. The Swedes recruit Peter Minuit, the erstwhile governor of New Netherland and the man who acquired Manhattan island from the Lenne Lenape tribe in the region. Eager for a new gig in the New World, Minuit leads two Swedish ships with Dutch crews - the Kalmar Nyckel and the Gripen - to the site of today's Wilmington, Delaware. Minuit would meet with the chiefs in the region and acquire, in one fashion or another, the west bank of the Delaware River from roughly the site of Philadelphia International Airport to Cape Henlopen. New Sweden would survive and at times prosper for 17 years, but Minuit, tragically, would not live more than six months after landing again in the New World. 1492: An Italian, funded by the Queen of Spain, sailed west to find the east, discovered a small island in the Caribbean, decided it was India, and sailed home to share the happy news. Ponce de León, Balboa, Cordoba, Cortés, Coronado and 24 other conquistadors were sent from Spain to bring home whatever they could find. 1562: France sent Laudonnière on 3 expeditions to South Carolina and Florida, but Spanish Admiral Menéndez slaughtered the French in 1565 and built the fortress city of St. Augustine, Florida.  1620: Religious misfits from Holland and England boarded a ship called the Mayflower, crossed the Atlantic in 66 days, landed at a place called Plymouth Rock, met some friendly natives and celebrated Thanksgiving with them, presumably on the last Thursday in November. 1662: A Dutchman named Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island from a group of local Indians for merchandise worth 60 Dutch guilders and built a thriving community there. It is considered to be the greatest real estate deal in the history of the world. Two years later, the English showed up with cannons and announced that they would now be in charge. The Dutch asked, “Can we keep our houses and our businesses and all of our stuff?”  The English said, “Sure, no problem. You just have to let us be in charge.” The Dutch smiled and said, “Welcome to America.” In the decades that followed, the sons and daughters of Spanish conquistadors and French explorers and religious misfits and Dutch traders and English soldiers were joined by tens of thousands of optimistic adventurers and entrepreneurs and families who dreamed of a better life. They came from everywhere. And then slave traders arrived with shiploads of captives for sale. But no one smiled at the captives and said, “Welcome to America.” In fact, these dark-skinned newcomers were not allowed to keep houses or businesses or anything else, not even their own children. July 4th, 1776: A new nation was born when everyone got tired of the English being in charge. And as this baby nation grew, her people began to sing. 1886: The song of Ellis Island, the song of the Statue of Liberty. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Building wealth and trade relationships requires at least two parties and a common currency and exchange. Once found, it is usually beneficial to at least one party to keep the relationship exclusive. This can be tricky. It can take discipline and a strategy to keep the primary goal or focus in sight. What happens when another party threatens to disrupt the arrangement? In this episode we examine the cause of English involvement in the Wampum trade. How they got involved. What they did. How the Dutch inadvertently handed them their golden ticket. We will see the shrewdness of the Dutch. After identifying the English threat and assessing the fortifications of Plymouth they employed a strategy of providing the English with wampum and pointing them away from the Dutch interests. We'll see the beginning of true English dominance and how they quickly targeted the heart of the Dutch enterprise. The Dutchmen; Jaques Elekes, Peter Minuit, and Isaak de Raisiers were shrewd and capable. Quick to capitalize on opportunities others may have missed. In the end they would be victims of the English population explosion for more than their own negligence. We won't finish the narrative today, but we'll introduce it. The purchase of Manhattan is made, at least the Dutch are made to believe so, most of the colony is relocated to the Island and a solid treaty is made with the Mohawk that will last until the end of New Netherland. Twelve years after Henry Hudson's 1609 trip charting the Hudson River, the Dutch used his voyage as the basis for a new colony, which would be wedged between the English colonies in New England and Virginia. New Netherland began with tiny numbers of people from different backgrounds. They settled the entire region that Hudson had traveled, from Delaware to New York to Connecticut. But being spread out so thinly exposed them to danger. In 1626, in the area around the future Albany, New York, a small party became embroiled in a fight between two native tribes, and some settlers were killed.In the aftermath, the colonists chose a new leader. Peter Minuit's first decision was to call all the settlers together for strength. Then he selected a location for a capital city, one that was strategically located in a world-class harbor and at the mouth of the colony's central river—a wilderness island called Manhattan. Nya Sverige blev Sveriges första koloni. 1637 avseglade två fartyg till Delaware i USA, men redan 1655 övertogs kolonin av Holländare. Många av de som bosatte i kolonin var finländare. Som släktforskare rör man sig på många olika geografiska platser, i många sekler och stöter på otroligt många personer. Och i detta nystan med alla olika trådar händer det att man upptäcker osannolika kopplingar som för ihop nutid och dåtid. Så var det för Nancy Svensson och hennes man Roland som med hjälp av ett DNA test upptäckte att de båda hade anor som varit i den svenska kolonin Nya Sverige i Delaware i Amerika på 1600-talet. Nancys berättelse handlar om hennes förfader Karl Springer. Han föddes i Stockholm 1658 som son till en familj i det absoluta toppskiktet i samhället. Och planerna för sonen var stora. Han skulle bli diplomat och skickades därför iväg till olika lärosäten. Först till Riga och 1676 skickades han till London där han skulle läsa matematik och engelska. Men där hände det som skulle helt skulle förändra Karl Springers fortsatta liv. - Han blev faktiskt sjanghajad i London. Han skulle lämna brev nere i hamnen och blev tillfångatagen och kom som slav till Virginia där han var i fem år, berättar Nancy Svensson. Karl Springer lyckades ta sig ur fångenskapen och tänkte åka hem till Sverige men fick höra om talas om kolonin Nya Sverige drygt 40 mil bort. Men vid det här laget var kolonin inte längre svensk men fortfarande fanns det gott om svenskar som bodde kvar där. Här fick nu Karl sitt nya hem och där fick han snart en viktig position i samhället. Och det var också härifrån som hans familj hemma i Sverige fick det brev som han skickade, och som ännu finns kvar. Nancy Svensson läser i brevet: - Han berättar om hur outhärdligt han tycker det är att var så långt borta från sin familj, och han vill berätta för sin mor hur han har det. - När jag var i London och var av lust att resa hem till mitt hemland, mot min vilja togs jag ombord ett engelskt skepp, och mot min vilja fördes jag till Virginia i Amerika, och när jag kom dit såldes jag som ett husdjur på en marknad och hölls i slaveri fem år tillsammans. Han berättar att de svenskar han mötte i Nya Sverige fick mig väldigt vänligt stämd. Han berättar också att han har en mycket dygdig hustru som heter Maria Henriksdotter, som han gifte sig med  1685, och de har tre barn tillsammans. Han berättar också om hur han hjälper till på den svenska församlingen, och därtill äger och driver en plantage. Brevet slutar med att han ber sin mor att skicka en bibel och några psalmböcker, och avslutningsorden är: Jag förblir alltid er mest lydige son, till döds, Pennsylvania, Delaware River 1 juni 1693 - Det är fantastiskt att få läsa hans egna ord så här, säger Nancy Svensson. En annan av invånarna i den forna svenska kolonin hette Peter Gunnarsson Rambo. Han var runt 70 år när Karl Springer kom dit efter sin tid i fångenskap. Nancy Svenssons man Roland stammar från just Peter Rambo. Och han var också en betydelsefull person i samhället och hade varit med att bygga upp kolonin Nya Sverige. Han var inte först på plats utan kom dit i april 1640 två år efter det att de första svenska kolonisatörerna hade anlänt med skeppen Kalmar Nyckel och Fågel Grip. Nancy Svensson är övertygad om att hennes ana Karl Springer, och hennes mans ana Peter Gunnarsson Rambo, träffades och samarbetade i Nya Sverige. - Det var ju väldigt få personer som levde och verkade där, så det är jag alldeles säker på att det gjorde. Peter Rambo lärde sig det språk som indianstammen i området, Lenaperna, talade, och engagerades som tolk i till exempel i domstolen och när det skulle skrivas avtal. Rambos familj var också engagerad i kyrkliga frågor, precis som Karl Springer. Han fungerade som skrivare för kyrkans räkning och gjorde också en befolkningsstatistik över området. - Tiden och världen knyts ihop. Vi vet ju att vi bara är på jorden en liten stund var och en , och alla hör ihop med alla på något sätt, allt det där vet vi ju, men det är otroligt att faktiskt få reda på att mina och min mans anor varit på samma plats och med all sannolikhet haft med varandra att göra, avslutar Nancy Svensson. Spåren i arkivet Kolonin Nya Sverige blev sveriges första av totalt fem kolonier. Men den blev inte särskilt långvarig för efter 18 år tog holländarna över och dom fick i sin tur lämna över området till England efter 9 år. På Riksarkivet i Stockholm finns fragment kvar av de nästan 400 år gamla dokument som berättar om kolonin. Planerna om en koloni startade redan på Gustav II Adolfs tid men efter hans död var det rikskanslern Axel Oxenstierna som tog över planerna. Jan Mispelaere är historiker och arkivarie och han berättar om stormakten sveriges ambitioner att etablera sig som en kolonialmakt. - Som alla stormakter och stora stater, som under tidig modern tid ville få en plats i världen, så var Sverige också med om att försöka bygga upp kolonier någonstans i världen, i första hand för att få avsättning för sina egna produkter, men också med ett hopp om att finna stora rikedomar så som spanjorer och portugiser hade gjort i Sydamerika, berättar han. Sverige ville ha avsättning för järn och koppar och hoppades kunna importera till exempel tobak. Axel Oxenstierna var initiativtagare tillsammans med flera av sina släktingar och ett antal holländare. - Hälften var holländare och hälften svenskar, som investerade stora summor i företaget, men som förstås hoppades på att göra sig förmögenheter på det hela förklarar Jan Mispelaere. Han har tagit fram en memoralen, breven, som gäller bildandet av kolonin. De är från 1624 till 1645. Breven är skrivare av en holländare som varit drivande i att starta det holländska västindiska kompaniet, och som engagerades av svenskarna för att bilda kolonin Nya Sverige. - De flesta av breven är skrivna på nederländska och berättar om hur man ska bygga upp en ny stat och bedriva fjärrhandel. När det första skeppet med tiden ger sig iväg till det som ska bli Nya Sverige så är det också en nederländare som leder expeditionen. Han heter Peter Minuit och har mest gjort sig känd för att ha köpt det som skulle bli Manhattan av ursprungsbefolkningen. Han var ett tag guvernör där, men blir avsatt och blir istället engagerad av den svenska kronan och ska stifta en svensk koloni i Amerika. Det finns rullor kvar över de som åker med de första skeppen. Där finns en del marinsoldater, några som ska ta hand om administrationen. Det går totalt tolv officiella resor mellan Sverige och Nya Sverige och de senare har mer fullständiga listor över personer. - Man vill ju gärna att folk ska bosätta sig där, berättar Jan Mispelaere. Men det var inte så enkelt att få finna bosättare, därför tog staten till mer drastiska metoder. Skogsfinnarna, eller svedjefinnarna som de också kallades hade tidigare lockats till de svenska skogarna men nu ville den svenska staten sätta stopp för deras skogsbruk och ansträngde sig för att bli av med skogsfinnarna. Ett sätt var att skicka dem till kolonin Nya Sverige, där man förutom handeln ville ha jordbrukare som kunde betala skatt. Men dessa fick också sällskap av en och annan straffånge som fick arbeta av sin strafftid i kolonin. Jan Mispelaere visar en räkenskapsbok 1639-48 där alla de saker som kompaniet gett de nya kolonisterna för att klä sig eller leva på, finns uppskrivna. En av personerna heter Henrik Mattson och står förtecknad som Finne. Om honom står det att han blivit skickad för att avtjäna sitt straff och blivit en fri man efter några år. Där finns beskrivit hur han fått olika varor som till exempel skjortor och skor. Finländare i kolonin Av den stora gruppen med finskt ursprung i Nya Sverige var alltså många skogsfinnar men det kom också finländare direkt från den östra rikshalvan. Många av dom lockades av guvernören Johan Printz som bott på Korsholms kungsgård i Österbotten. Juha Hiltunen är docent i amerikansk ursprungskultur vid Universitetet i Uleåborg och han uppskattar att upp mot två tredjedelar av dem som flyttade till Nya Sverige var av finskt ursprung. De flesta av utflyttarna var ensamstående, men även ett fåtal familjer gjorde den långa, mödosamma resan till Delaware-dalen. - De flesta var bönder, men där fanns också soldater och örlogsmän från området runt Wasa i den finska rikshalvan, berättar docent Juha Hiltunen. Johan Printz som var guvernör av Nya Sverige i ett tiotal år hade före sin avresa varit godsherre i Korsholm vid Vasa i finska Österbotten och mest troligt tagit med sig sjömän och soldater därifrån. I kolonin nya Sverige återfanns bosättningar benämnda både Vasa och Korsholm. För att kunna bedriva handel och förhandla om landområden med ursprungsbefolkningen var det nödvändigt att kunna prata med dem. Juha Hiltunen säger att både svenskar från Sverige och de som kom från Finland hade fördel i umgänget av att de var vana att vistas i skogar. De finskättade brukade dessutom svedja och bada ångbad såsom Amerikas ursprungsfolk också gjorde. - Jag tror att de ganska snabbt förstod att de hade liknande seder och vanor, det var nog det viktigaste skälet till att de kom så bra överens, säger Juha Hiltunen. Invånarna i Nya Sverige kom nära Lenape-stammen som var talrik och hade samhällen kring Delaware-floden. Många lärde sig också deras språk som var ett slags lingua franca, begripligt också för andra närliggande stammar, berättar Juha Hiltunen. Han säger att en del av Nya Sveriges invånare ingick äktenskap med lokalbefolkningen i området, fick egen jord att odla och rotade sig väl. Efter cirka 18 års existens övertogs så den svenska kolonin Nya Sverige till slut av holländarna. Övertagandet skedde fredligt, men det kunde ha blivit en sammandrabbning, beskriver docent Juha Hiltunen. - Det berättas att när holländarna kom för att ta över Nya Sverige, så samlades Lenape-krigare på båda sidor om Delawarefloden, redo att attackera eftersom de ville försvara Nya Sverige. Man startade förhandlingar och det kom aldrig till något bråk, men det är fint att veta att ursprungsbefolkningen respekterade svenskar och finnar, säger han. På den korta tid Nya Sverige existerade hade bosättarna fått ett så gott rykte bland lokalbefolkningen att den var beredd att försvara de fort som svenskarna i Nya Sverige byggt, menar Juha Hiltunen . Efter det nederländska övertagandet av kolonin seglade sjömän, soldater och ämbetsmän tillbaka till Sverige, medan de flesta andra blev kvar. Också efter Nya Sveriges fall kom ett par skepp med nya bosättare till området i Delawaredalen där de hört att de tidigare bosättarna levde gott. Aquellas tierras las había explorado una década atrás Henry Hudson, marinero inglés a sueldo de la Compañía Neerlandesa de las Indias Orientales. Aquellos primeros colonos llegaron precisamente de los Países Bajos, y lograron levantar un pueblo de unos 200 habitantes, al sur de la actual isla de Manhattan, al que llamaron Nueva Ámsterdam. Uno de sus líderes, Peter Minuit, compró a los nativos en 1624 parte de la isla a cambio de objetos valorados en una cantidad que, al cambio de hoy, se calcula en unos mil dólares.

The Dutch had a hard time increasing their colony populations, due to a couple of factors. Reputable people were not making the trip most likely because of the patroon system and the leaders of the New Netherland. Once Wouter Van Twiller was released from duty, he was replaced with someone who created more problems especially among the Indians, William Kieft. A new nation would settle in the lands, the Swedes, headed by Peter Minuit, a Dutchman and former director general of New Netherland. So now we have the English, the Dutch and the Swedes, oh my!
