Hear the monthly Moonbeam Team focus on the 2022 Pisces New Moon and Virgo Full Moon story line contributing to our lives for this archetypal period. This axis relates to the forces without boundaries beyond our control in Pisces versus the use of exerting control daily to fix or heal things or develop skills. The natural world is perfect in its orchestration without our interference. Yet in Virgo, in order to perfect what may be destroyed without attention, we interfere. Pisces completes the cycle initiated by Aries and holds the next seed for the next cycle. The Virgo Full Moon relates back to six months ago for the September 6, 2021 New Moon in Virgo. Talk Cosmos weekly leading-edge conversations awakening the authentic self for soul growth continues to remake itself into its 5th season starting March 20. A day celebrating a new cycle with Aries starting the 12 archetypal periods and initiates the Vernal (Spring) Equinox and Astrology Day! We have a large panel coordinated with East West Bookshop. You can register to continue learning for its 3-hour session and details will be announced during programs. Sue Rose Minahan ushers in the Moonbeam Team to bring illumination to the Aquarius New Moon on February 1 and, its polarity opposite, the Leo Full Moon on February 16. But for Western astrology, a reflective theme connects the 12-degree Aquarius New Moon and 28-degree Leo Full Moon upon values fundamentally recalibrating deep restructuring. Visible in Antarctica, this total eclipse is in the Solar Saros family cycle 152 beginning July 26, 1805. The Moonbeam Team will study the Full Moon at 28° Gemini on Dec 18 at 8:36 PST and at 11:36 pm EST. “Eclipses occur when the earth, sun and moon's paths intersect. The earth either blocks the sun's light reflecting on the Moon for a lunar eclipse on 18/19 Nov, or the earth blocks the sun in its conjunction with the moon for a solar eclipse. No matter, the energy translates to the globe. The lunar nodes are nearly ended in Gemini and Sagittarius at 01 degrees. Will this be a “last gasp or song” for the communicative Gemini to vocalize patterns and beliefs of Sagittarius? What shall their energetic agenda be?” said Sue Rose Minahan, host of the weekly program. Sue Rose Minahan brings the Moonbeam Team to review the Aquarius Full Moon occurring a few days before on the 23rd, followed by the Leo New Moon on August 8. “We'll be experiencing the Aquarius Full Moon reflecting the light of the Leo Sun. The Full Moon brings the issues to light for us to reflect on if their development goes successfully or whether it's time to let things go. That's the important part of a Full Moon – to release the non-essential, the undeveloped, the misdirected developments and give space for the new to begin with the following New Moon,” said Sue. Aquarius relates to how we network, how we choose to improve the conditions of the group. And it can be associated with the shadow of elitist beliefs if the group becomes narrow-minded and exclusive. Aquarius shadow can disengage from the emotional heart of an issue in lieu of the mentality involving an issue. The heart of the Leo Lion comes to the rescue with its generous love for life and joy in creativity. Find out the astrological climate with the Moonbeam Team view of the energies we may experience. Her training methods focus on building a balanced, relaxed, relationship between horse and rider. She teaches dressage as well as liberty work (focusing on building a connection on the ground, on and offline).  Juliette has over 18 years of experience riding training and showing horses in dressage, eventing, hunter jumpers, English and western performance. She has been teaching in the Pacific Northwest for 9 years, and has recently started teaching clinics locally and internationally, in British Columbia. Her training methods combine Natural Horsemanship, and dressage,  to create balance and harmony with horse and rider.  In this episode we discuss: Juliette's broad horsemanship journey including vaulting and clicker training, liberty, and classical dressage, to where she is today training a large variety of breeds. Juliette's experience working for CAVALIA (the incredible international “horse circus”)- including how the horses go travelling internationally. Her journey into liberty training through experimentation. What lead her to look into classical dressage We discuss issues with “modern” / competition dressage The key to enriching your horse's life.  Mistakes she see's horse people making and mistakes she's made in the past  The bits vs bites debate Positive vs Negative reinforcement debate Juliette also tells us who inspires her and what she is reading & learning about today  Plus how social media can be a good thing! AND so much more!!!   What I love about Juliette is that she emphasises the importance of experimentation in training, trusting your intuition, and tailoring your training to the individual horse.  I loved talking to Juliette and I hope you enjoy the interview!   Where to find out more about JC Horse Training: Website: www.jchorsetraining.com Instagram: @jchorsetraining Facebook: @jchorsetraining TikTok: @jchorsetraining YouTube: Oreoliberty [JC Horse Training]   Have questions or suggestions for future episodes? Ali Banholzer is originally from Redmond WA. She earned both a BA and MA in Criminal Justice from Washington State University and began her early career at the Spokane Police Department as a Criminologist.  In 1996 Ali met a dashing Air Force pilot, Dave.  They married and Ali soon found herself moving around the world to support Dave’s Air Force career.  Along the way they had two beautiful daughters, Kate and Caroline.Ali began Wear Your Spirit Warehouse in 2004, literally at her kitchen table.  She was a mom of two beautiful baby girls, and a proud military wife to her husband David.  In 2010, the business out grew the house and moved to commercial space.  Ali continued to support her young family and hold down the home front while David traveled, and did all that being an Air Force Officer entails. Early in 2014 David became the 14th Presidential Pilot of the United States, and Commander of Air Force One, fulfilling a lifelong dream.  Sadly, this dream was cut short in May of 2014 when David was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  At that time, Ali closed down her commercial storefront and moved WYSW back to the house so she could care for David and her girls.  With the help of incredible friends and employees, Ali was able to continue to run WYSW while caring for her husband. David passed in November of 2016. Ali took a bit of time to care for her girls, grieve, and plan.  In April of 2017 she moved WYSW back out into a small commercial location in Huntingtown.  With the amazing support of friends, employees and the local community, Ali was able to grow WYSW into the company it is today, in their new larger location in Huntingtown.    “We believe everyone has the capacity to soar and we should have fun every day.  Our story has taught us that life is short and should be celebrated.  We want to help your SPIRIT take FLIGHT”!   Websites and Handles: wearyourspiritwarehouse.comFacebook:  https://www.facebook.com/WearYourSpirit  Corporate Sponsor: efile4Biz makes it easy to file and deliver 1099 and W-2 forms online. Download Transcript Here 00:00 Pete Bernard: Welcome to the IoT Unicorn podcast. This is Pete Bernard from Microsoft, and this podcast is for anyone interested in the long-term technology trends in the IoT space and the journey from here to there. So let's get started.   [music]   00:21 PB: On this episode of the IoT unicorn, we talk to a very interesting person doing very interesting things, and that's Sarah Maston of Microsoft. We talk about Boston University where we both went to school, a little bit about nutrition and nutrition technology, but we spend quite a bit of time talking about Project 15, which is an open platform effort that her and her colleagues have been championing. It's an anti-poaching platform that's been adopted by a number of NGOs around the world, and we talk about that and the technology behind it. So please join us.   [music]   00:58 PB: Sarah, thanks for joining us. We've had a lot of different guests on the show from silicon partners to telecom, internal Microsoft, I think you kind of fall into the category of very interesting Microsoft people that are doing very interesting things, so I'm gonna tee that up. Maybe you can give us a little bit of an intro yourself and sort of some background.   01:18 Sarah Maston: Sure, it's funny, when I look at my cats, I don't know that I'm that, they think I'm that interesting, but thank you. [chuckle] I'm really happy to be here. Where did I come from? So I actually have a really long history in the database space. I started out making data warehouses before that was a thing, that kinda grew, and so I started out as a medical programmer, actually, at a company called Meditech in Massachusetts.   01:56 PB: I see. Oh, where in Massachusetts, by the way?   02:00 SM: Ah, they were in Natick, but I lived in Arlington, I went to BU.   02:04 PB: So interesting, interesting... Oh, you went to BU? Oh, I went to BU also.   02:08 SM: I did, once upon a time. Oh, yay!   02:10 PB: I was a BA/MA BU grad, isn't that weird?   02:12 SM: Go Terriers!   02:12 PB: No, I was gonna say... Yeah, go Terriers. I was gonna say I had, my first job out of college was in West Natick.   02:19 SM: Oh, interesting.   02:19 PB: There was a little shop called The Bit Bucket computer store, and my professor from BU, my assembly language professor actually ran the company, The Bit Bucket, and we built computers, branded computers, and I was his first engineering hire, and it was in West Natick. I didn't stay there that long, 'cause it was kind of like a weird job, but yeah, The Bit Bucket, I remember West Natick... Yeah, Natick's a nice area. That's cool.   02:49 SM: So I was gonna say did they have a lot of Twinkies, 'cause I believe that the Twinkie fact... I don't know. I think it's in Natick...   02:57 PB: Oh, the Twinkie was there?   02:58 SM: I'm unclear.   03:00 PB: I think that was it, I know there's Necco Wafers too was out there.   03:01 SM: Oh, delicious, delicious.   03:01 PB: I'm not sure where that is, yeah.   03:03 SM: Yeah, no, I actually have a degree in psychology and women's studies from BU.   03:08 PB: Fantastic.   03:09 SM: So, a little bit...   03:10 PB: Fantastic, okay. Go Terriers, yeah. Okay.   03:13 SM: Okay.   03:14 PB: There you go.   03:15 SM: Back to this.   03:15 PB: We should have cleared that up in the pre, in the preamble before we started recording, but that's okay, now we know, so that's good.   03:21 SM: Thank you. Yeah, so I did a lot of data warehouses, and I put myself actually in Harvard's night school to kind of get out of data and start learning more Java-ey, getting into more programming stuff, because I had a really weird side hobby then as well, where I had been really sick in my late 20s, and I started studying nutrition, and I ended up creating what was a graph database of food, and I wanted to go and put myself in Harvard 'cause it was easier to learn how to code it than to sort of explain it. And so that journey led me to... I actually invented that over at IBM a couple of years ago and working at IBM, I met a colleague there that had come to Microsoft and so how did you come to Microsoft? Well, I had a friend, and then I met the IoT group and they... It was funny because I hadn't, I was kind of the first person in the group that hadn't built a computer to be.   04:44 PB: Right, right.   04:45 SM: Wasn't a hardware person, and but when they brought me in to start talking about that bigger data conversation, so that's how I got here.   04:57 PB: Interesting. Yeah, cool, so obviously you've been here, I think a couple of years or two years or...   05:01 SM: I have.   05:02 PB: Just about that. That's exciting. Yeah, so that's an interesting path, I think a lot of people get to Microsoft through professional connections, personal connections, there's all sorts of different ways and so you were involved in nutrition and...   05:16 SM: I was.   05:16 PB: And kind of analyzing that. Is that still a big kind of passion of yours, personal nutrition and things?   05:22 SM: I, well yes, personal. Once I designed the graph with the team there, which was the connection of food to disease through phyto-chemicals and the reactions in your bios, kind of like a Facebook of food. I had spent so much... Honestly, I had spent so much time on that in my life that the IoT space and starting to learn more formally about that was so exciting, and a lot of my data colleagues in my circle, same thing, because sometimes you can be doing the same thing and database, database... What's new? And so this was actually really fun, and it was in the beginning of when I got here, my job was a lot of enablement. We were gonna teach people how to use Azure and how to use Azure IoT and etcetera. And that's my fault that I'm having a notification 'cause clearly I...   06:25 PB: That's okay.   06:26 SM: I could have turned that off.   [chuckle]   06:30 SM: But what's interesting is that I... This, it's kind of a strange story in the sense that I... It's not that strange, but I was outside and of my apartment and I saw a lot of smoke and I freaked out, and I ran into my building to save my cats and long story, very short, lots of stress, but the next day, I ended up designing a safety platform that could use IoT to speak differently in a crisis, and so that's really something that whenever I talk about my journey to Microsoft and learning something new is that it was so great to have the space to be like, "Hey, I have an idea." But anyway, that's another story. [chuckle]   07:26 PB: Fascinating. Yeah, I do actually, I use the... I'm kind of a Fitbit fan, and I use the food logging on Fitbit, and it gives me a macro-nutrient breakdown and stuff, and so I've been kind of on my own health journey in the past year or so and feeling good, feeling fit. And part of it is kind of analyzing what I ingest, and I feel like we're just sort of at the beginning of a lot of that science like I would love for the data I'm putting into the Fitbit system, which I guess is now Google, just to get even more analysis of that over time. So it's fascinating kind of measuring what you put into your body and how your body is working, and we had a Dr. David Rhew from Microsoft's chief medical officer on a few weeks ago, and talking about COVID of course, but also just more of the intersection of health and technology and very early stages of really taking advantage of that kind of combination, so...   08:24 SM: No, that's true. It's my work, it was... My work pretty much focused on just taking stuff we do with process, architecture and analysis, and then data, of course, but if I think back when my hair was much browner, I just thought what's breaking when it came to metabolic syndrome, and it was... Well, what happens when I do this and then how does your... And what does your intestinal villi do? And so basically connecting those dots to go through the process architecture of digestion and then to make sort of the data model of that. And to say, "Oh, when you eat oatmeal, the pectin and beta-glucan, pectin from apples and pears comes in, it absorbs bile salts." Basically, all those different processes and then how those can combine and really... Back in the day, I created what's called a food program, and that's also known as a diet, but a food program that would layer what foods to eat, how to change your internals to do what it needed to do. And I guess my own doctor took notice because I lowered my cholesterol 90 points in under three months, so...   09:48 PB: Wow.   09:49 SM: Then I made a system that did it, and so that was really... And I met a lot of really cool people in that journey. Then unfortunately, I got sick from stress, but when I came out of that, here I was, and then I invented some new stuff.   10:12 PB: Good, so let's talk about some new stuff. You've been sort of very, very busy, not only being a new... Fairly new Microsoft employee, but also building up something that is referred to as Project 15 for probably some of our listeners are probably familiar, but why don't you give us a little bit of a recap of the origin story around Project 15 and where that's at?   10:40 SM: Sure, I'd love to. I do a little project in the... Although it's a little bigger now, in my spare nights and in weekend hours with a few friends of mine here at Microsoft and... Alright, so the origin story, once upon a time, it really speaks back to that incident with the cat, and essentially, I made a safety system that could use IoT devices to speak to a community within an emergency. So if you thought about some of the stuff that was going on, you have to go to Twitter to find hashtag, you have to go... You don't really know what's going on. There are so many systems getting good data to first responders, but for us, we don't really know what's going on. So that project became known as Project Edison. And so it went for about a year, we built that with a partner, Insight, and we went on the IoT in Action global event tour and talked about it, and I talked about safety in every context you could imagine.   11:55 SM: I talked about safe retail, I talked about safe cities, I talked about safe schools, safe workplaces, safe buildings. And then, actually, I met a guy who does anti-poaching and his name was Eric and... Eric Dinerstein, and I realized in one of these very stereotypical, I was at the cafe with my colleague Daisuke, and I started drawing, and I said, "Anti-poaching, it's the same use case as a Project Edison safety case," and he looked at me and I said, "Well, it's a population that can't defend itself, and it's someone that you wanna stop or making it less impactful, using devices, and then people you need to talk to to get help. So maybe we can get other people that were like us to have this aha moment that scientists are remaking these wheels that we've already made in the commercial space." And so, that's how Project 15 started, which was like, what do we have in our world that we just don't know the use cases of the scientific world. And the second person I met was another professor, Wasser, Dr. Sam Wasser, and he was at U-Dub, and he also was involved with trying to prevent animal... The tracking of tusks and things, illegal trafficking, and I learned about a pangolin from one of his research fellows, which is a tiny, cute, little, scaly animal, and...   13:42 PB: Okay.   13:43 SM: I had never heard of a pangolin, so cute. And they're slow. And the problem is, is that their defense mechanism is that if you scare them, they turn into a ball.   13:55 PB: Okay.   13:56 SM: And if you are...   13:57 PB: Sounds fair.   13:58 SM: Right, I do the same thing.   14:00 PB: Yeah, I can relate to that.   14:01 SM: I'm just gonna be a little ball over here, but and that works for lions and tigers who are like, "Oh, that's a sharp little ball," but it doesn't work for, poachers will just make a noise, it curls up into a ball, they pick it up, they put it in a bag so.   14:21 PB: I see.   14:22 SM: That's our most poached animal on the planet, actually.   14:25 PB: Oh no.   14:26 SM: Anyway, but I thought, "Well, what's the difference between shoplifting a sweater at a store and shoplifting an animal?" And so that was really where this started was, can we just think about this?   14:44 PB: Right, right. Fantastic. And I think, and I did see you had a segment on a recent video, it was like a United Nations gathering of interested parties around the equator initiative, and I guess I was labeled on YouTube. But can you talk a little bit about that. I mean you're getting some pretty good NGO type of engagement off of project 15.   15:13 SM: Yes. So that was super exciting. I would be... I'll just, full disclosure, I was very nervous, but... And I was a little frustrated with the pandemic because I think I could have gone to the United Nations in another reality.   15:32 PB: Yeah I know.   15:33 SM: But virtually, was very fun and so what happened was, is so we put up a video because we had support from my CVP and my management tree, and pretty much everyone in the group that I was in was very supportive of Project 15 right in the beginning. And so we put up a little web page, and I used to call it the bat phone, because we wondered if anyone would call from the scientific realm, and we actually started meeting NGOs. We had... People used our web page to get in touch with us and two of the people, one of them is... That we started working with, is Red Panda Network, which is a fascinating, wonderful organization. Another one is called the Zambezi project, and the third was a woman who runs the small grants program at... The United Nations Development Program has different sections and small grants is a department that funds scientific projects and that are all very, very much sustainability focused.   16:55 SM: I could give a whole talk about... They're so fascinating. And I met her because she actually knew... Her husband was friends with Daisuke so it was like one of these things where somebody hears about what's... And, "Hey, that's really interesting. Let's see if that would work." And then six months later, I'm speaking at their conference. But what happened was, is that we kind of paired up together to see if we could bring our commercial processes that we do normally with my day job, IoT engagements, we're gonna do an architectural design session, we're gonna get to know those processes. And then she gave us... We piloted with three grantees and started to try to figure out, we have different worlds, but we do the same things, it's just different words to describe them.   18:01 SM: And so we had a few epiphanies during this process, and so the thing is, is that she... Her group funds thousands of NGO companies and projects, scientists that range from urban sustainability, so like smart city type stuff, all the way to biodiversity, which is where we kinda focused, and so how do you scale? And so we've been working with her and her group on scaling up and digitally transforming this area through not only Azure IoT, but how does that work with the research part, there's a lot of machine learning, there's a lot of CAMS, so connecting that into something like Teams, so it's bigger than Azure IoT specifically, as all IoT solutions are, and so...   19:05 PB: Exactly.   19:06 SM: So that... Yeah, so that I got invited to speak about our work.   19:09 PB: Yeah it's interesting. Who do we have on recently... Oh, we were talking to Cory Clarke from RXR, and he was talking about the smart building solutions that they're rolling out for office space and office space post-COVID, and how do you use AI and sensors to detect occupancy and distance from each other and a lot of the core tech around using AI, vision and other things and processing that data, it's all very similar. The core tech is similar, but now we have all these other ways of applying it, whether it's in healthcare or bio-diversity or whatever. And so that's an exciting thing about Microsoft, is a lot of the platform tech that we're doing here gets used in all these different directions. And so you've found a particular slice where obviously there's a super high need and folks should look up and learn more about the poaching problems that are happening in the world, but it's pretty significant.   20:11 PB: And to take some of the tech that has been used for more of the, I don't know, traditional digital transformation that we talk about, but actually using that tech in a really smart way out in the field and the real world to help a problem. That must be pretty satisfying for you as a Microsoft employee. And I guess one of my questions is, that must take up a pretty good chunk of your time, as it should. And so you're doing that and you're also working at Microsoft. And so how do you end up balancing all these things? Is this a... Is that... Give us a little more insight. How do you do that? [laughter]   20:49 SM: Well, I have a very supportive wife who feeds me and makes sure that I eat and...   20:56 PB: Yeah.   20:58 SM: So good question. So when we started to scale, and I clearly... Daisuke and I cannot meet with every NGO to do an... Etcetera. So COVID, in the beginning of this, we did have a very big partnering model. And so we have all these great IoT partners, they've got platforms and just connect these projects to them like we would a startup, a retail startup or something. Unfortunately, the pandemic happened, and of course, as we know, it's all hands on deck to start landing our... Like you just mentioned, the return to work and employees safe. So Daisuke and I had another coffee talk, though virtual, and I said, "You know what? Why don't we use the company Hackathon and make an 80% solution for these folks?"   22:10 SM: That's an easier way. And so we actually got reached out to by a couple of colleagues, one of them was Pamela Cortez and Anders in my group. And they both said, "We'd love to join this because we know what you're doing and we need to figure out how to do the least amount of stuff to have a big impact. And to do that, we need to rely on existing enablement motions and partnerships within other groups. And if we could just build that, then we can roll that out, and off it goes just like anything else."   22:58 PB: Yeah. Well, Microsoft has a great partner network too. So that's the good thing, when we have developers, we have channel partners, we have solution providers, this huge force multiplying engine. It's one of the cool things also about Microsoft is just to get that great idea out there, partners picking it up and amplifying it and landing it locally. So it was good that you took advantage of it. I do wanna make sure people know the... So the aka.ms/project15, is that the go-to place to get the latest?   23:31 SM: That is the place. And then if it can... Down at the bottom there, we have a new link on that page that brings you to the open platform, if you wanna check that out.   23:41 PB: Wow, fantastic. So yeah, let me ask you too, another question. You mentioned COVID-19 and obviously we're all working through that in so many ways. And how has that affected some of your efforts around Project 15 in terms of... Has it been some acceleration in the adoption of technology? Has it slowed down some of these NGOs? Has it...   24:09 SM: This is a multi-faceted answer, so let me think about my words. Okay. So what happened, because now, in the past year, in my private time, and I'm just learning and meeting new people and learning about this space, 'cause I didn't know anything. So if you're somebody who's like me who always wanted to help but didn't think you could, so you just watched, that is not true. All of our skills are welcome and wanted, and a lot of these organizations are non-profits.   24:47 PB: Sure.   24:47 SM: And there's a lot of tech developer groups that you can code for good and get involved on the device level and the software side. So I just wanna put that out there. But what happened was, is that the places where these things are happening, you'll read news articles that poaching accelerated or the lack of tourism has caused some problems. So this space seems to be having the same problems that every other part of the world is having when it comes to learning to adapt to a pandemic world. We weren't exactly affected in terms of getting on the phone at 7 o'clock at night, Pacific Time, to meet with Sonam, who runs the Red Panda network, who's in Nepal, because we were always virtual. And actually, I would... The lack of social life [chuckle] being quarantined probably helped myself, and Daisuke, and Pamela, and Anders when we were cranking out the code and the plan for scale. And so the answer is no.   26:08 SM: One thing that's been... Is a little bit challenging is that I was used to meeting up with our partner architect friends, and we would draw on pieces of paper and we'd talk about smart factories, and then we'd talk about this. And so those kind of conversations got harder, but I did get involved with a Hackathon that came out of Hack-Star and where they were hacking on the OpenCollar project to build the smartest elephant. That's the goal, is to build the smartest elephant collar for Smart Parks. So I just wanted to mention that, is the partner ecosystem is out there, they're doing stuff in this area as well as all the areas. But so it didn't... I don't think it stopped. It's just, at least not...   27:03 PB: Yeah, changed it a little bit.   27:03 SM: For us sitting at the desk, yeah.   27:06 PB: Yeah. Yeah. I hear you. I've definitely missed some of the more serendipitous conversations I've had. Sometimes you... That's where you have the serendipitous meetings and conversations that connect things, and it's been a little more planful maybe in terms of conversations and time. But I know also that there's been a lot of tech acceleration by a lot of companies too, and the whole notion of remote and leveraging the cloud a lot more. So hopefully that does work in your favor. I was gonna mention the... We haven't talked about the tech behind Project 15 too much. You mentioned AI is obviously like big data sets. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention I think this sounds like a really exciting potential for 5G/LPWA tech in some form. I know that the... I don't think they've rolled out 5G yet in Nepal, but the idea of some sort of low frequency or low spectrum cellular connections that can blanket those areas is exciting. So that's a follow-on for me. I will actually take that as an action to circle back and see what we can do to help there.   28:20 SM: That's actually one of the... So when it comes to the spectrum of silicon to cloud, I fall squarely into process architecture and designing how you're gonna get this to there, and what are we gonna do and strategy on that. I also fall squarely on data because of my background. When it comes to connectivity, Pamela and Daisuke on the Project 15 meta team, they're really interested in that. But something I noticed is that my assumption that some place like the Himalayas wouldn't have any connectivity or something, that was just my own... I don't know if that's a pre-conception or just like a, "That's the woods and the mountains." However, when we looked into it, and we've been working with some groups in the Caribbean as well that go out into the ocean, it's all got coverage. It may be 2G. There's always a satellite, which then you're gonna bring in some edge, let's compute as much as possible over here at the camera or the gateway. But that was really surprising. So I'm really, I'm interested in... We'll loop back on your response because...   29:45 PB: Yeah, yeah. We'll have to loop back. There's some really interesting things happening, especially if you wanna have... You're designing for very low-bandwidth networks, like low-cost low-bandwidth networks. You actually need to do more processing on the edge, and then it's more of a metadata that's going to the cloud as opposed to the actual streams of video or camera images. So some really fascinating things going on there that I think would be really exciting, not only to land in low-bandwidth networks, but also that also enables some very low power endpoints. So imagine you wanna stick some sensors onto a tree out there somewhere, if you want it solar-powered, you need to keep that power profile really low. So projects like these, not only are they inherently just good, but they are also pushing the tech maybe more-so than the more business-oriented deployments that we have that maybe are a little "easier." These are hard deployments because of some of the different environmental factors. So it's always exciting to see the tech being pushed in that direction.   30:51 SM: I was gonna say, just to jump in. You actually raise... This is a really big deal. There's what we're doing with Project 15, but there's the bigger Microsoft sustainability mission. And so this year if you go out to the Microsoft sustainability web page, we just made a recent announcement about water. There was a really interesting announcement about the circular economy and waste. And so when you start to think about devices... So let's say you come from the more device side of the spectrum of our solutioning. I met a scientist who said something really that stuck with me. "We're trying to save the oceans from plastic using plastic." And so when you start to think about how we make devices. How do we make better batteries? How do we use solar? Like you said...   31:54 PB: Yeah, solar.   31:54 SM: That's when we just kind of was like... We also as a technical community should be thinking about that because it really wasn't purview a year ago. But oh, okay, that makes a lot of sense, I never really thought about that.   32:10 PB: Yeah. No. That's fascinating. I was gonna ask you about that before we... I don't know where we're at on time here, I have to check my clock. But I know we're not traveling any more, but I still stay in touch with BU through their various alumni programs and things. Do you stay in touch with any BU alums or any Boston related things these days? Or...   32:32 SM: Well, I do. I do.   32:33 PB: 'Cause we're pretty far from Boston. People don't know, we're actually in Redmond Washington. It's like the polar opposite of Boston.   32:40 SM: Three thousand miles away. I do, I have friends that I went there with, and I get the magazine. And I get...   32:49 PB: Oh yeah, the magazine.   32:50 SM: I was very proud of, what was it? One of the alums, she was in the Orange is the New Black and I was like, "Whoa, BU!" And of course on LinkedIn I see different things. Actually, speaking of COVID, I saw a really cool video that I thought was very edgy and he did a video about everybody wearing their masks and I was like, "Yes!" But yeah, no, I keep an eye on what's going on there.   33:24 PB: Good.   33:25 SM: So yeah.   33:27 PB: Yeah, no, it's fascinating to see all this stuff, how it's evolving and how we're all sort of connected, right? So now you and I are connected through Boston University, and we didn't even know that so that's fantastic.   33:36 SM: Who knew? T. Anthony's pizza.   33:36 PB: Who knew? T. Anthony's, yeah, I love that place, yeah. Although I don't eat cheese anymore but I still love pizza so... [chuckle] Cool. So any final thoughts Sarah? We... You kind of said that the URL people should go to. What's the call to action here? Where do you want people to go do now they've been sort of educated here?   34:00 SM: We love... When you think about it, if you go out and you get to the Project 15 open platform, for those of us who are very familiar, when you see the architecture you'll say, "Oh, this looks like everything else that is the components of an IoT solution." That is true. I've actually been using it with, met some startups and I said, "Well hey," doing my usual day job, which is, "How do I learn Azure IoT?" And, "Oh, go here, go here. Ask me questions if you have them." So people who are on the coding side of our world, feel free to bug bash that, and any feedback is absolutely welcome. It's really a passion project when you get down to it, which we hope is really useful, and if you do have people who are technical on the scientific side and it's interesting to them and we are building it through Pamela's work with community so that people will be able to get enabled on it. This speaks to the, "How do you do all of this?" Well, I have smart friends. And so yeah, so that really it's out there for you to use. Any feedback is welcome. And yeah, we hope it helps.   35:26 PB: Yeah, I encourage people to go to that website and learn more about it. And Sarah, I really appreciate the time today. I know you're really busy, so carving out a little time here, much appreciated. So hopefully we can actually meet each other in person at some point in the near future. So that'd be great.   35:47 SM: Soon. Soon.   35:48 PB: Soon.   35:48 SM: Wear your masks everybody.   35:51 PB: Exactly.   35:51 SM: Alright. Yeah, no, thank you so much. This has been fun.   35:53 PB: Sure. Okay, cool. Alright, thanks Sarah.   35:57 SM: Thank you.   35:57 PB: Bye bye.   36:00 SM: Bye.   36:00 PB: This is Pete Bernard. Since then, there has been a slew of online articles, not to mention industry campaigns and even new gadgets, centred on this claim. The only problem with it is that more recent and better quality research has found this to be extremely unlikely... However, other research shows that having plants indoors has a range of other benefits. They can boost productivity. They can improve mood. They can regulate humidity – all on top of looking beautiful. If you want fresh air, open a window. If you want to witness the joy of nature and feel a daily sense of wonder, get some houseplants." Born in Rutland Vermont, Benjamin was always drawn to nature. He graduated from West Point and even spent some time teaching there as a Math Professor.  Benjamin fought in the Seminole Wars, the Mexican–American War, and the Civil War. When he wasn't serving in the military, Benjamin returned to his passions of scholarly activity. His obituary at Arlington says, “General Alvord lived most of his life in the field, where he was separated from society and books, yet he became a learned scholar; skilled in dialectics, ready in conversation, and polished in his writing.  He had a special fondness for mathematics, botany, history, and biography.” Benjamin published mathematical papers as well as literary articles for magazines like Harpers, and he even wrote a botanical paper on the Compass Plant Silphium laciniatum, which was featured in The American Naturalist. In 1848, Benjamin described the Compass Plant this way: “The Silphium laciniatum is a perennial plant of the order Compositae; the first year it bears only radical leaves, the second year and after, it is a flowering herb with four or five leaves on the stem; very rough bristly throughout; Flowers yellow. Found on rich prairies of the Mississippi valley from Minnesota to Texas… It was first seen by me in the autumn of 1839, on the rich prairies near Fort Wayne in the north-eastern portion of the Cherokee nation, near the Arkansas line.” The leaves of the Compass Plant align north-south, which helps the plant minimize the effect of the midday sun. The north-south orientation guided settlers crossing the prairies who used the plant as a compass during their journey. Compass Plant is edible. Livestock eats it. Native Americans used it to make tea, a dewormer for their horses, and as a teeth cleaner and breath sweetener. Although before you use the Compass Plant for your teeth or breath, take note of this passage from the Illinois author John Madison, “Pioneers found that compass plant produced a pretty good brand of native chewing gum. It has an odd pine-resin taste that’s pleasant enough, but must be firmed up before its chewed. A couple summers ago I tried some of this sap while it was still liquid. It’s surely the stickiest stuff in all creation and I literally had to clean it from my teeth with lighter fluid.” Now, Benjamin was very curious about the polarity of the Compass Plant. In fact, another common name for the plant is the Polar Plant. Benjamin initially theorized that the plant took up a lot of iron, thereby creating a magnet polarity in the leaves, but he later discounted that theory. The poet Longfellow referred to the Compass Plant in his 1947 poem "Evangeline" about a young woman who is lovesick over missing her boyfriend.  FYI Nepenthe is a drug of forgetfulness, and Asphodel is a grey and ghostly plant in the Underworld. Patience! the priest would say; have faith, and thy prayer will be answered; Look at this delicate plant that lifts its head from the meadow; See how its leaves are turned to the north, as true as the magnet - This is the compass-flower, that the finger of God has planted Here in the houseless wild, to direct the traveler's journey Over the sea-like, pathless, limitless waste of the desert. Such in the soul of man is faith. The blossoms of passion, Gay and luxuriant flowers, are brighter and fuller of fragrance; But they beguile us and lead us astray, and their odor is deadly. Only this humble plant can guide us here, and hereafter Crown us with asphodel flowers, that are wet with the dews of nepenthe.   1908    Today is the birthday of the Norwegian poet and gardener Olav Hauge. Olav was a trained horticulturist and fruit grower. Olav earned a living as a professional gardener. When he wasn't writing poetry, he could be found working in his apple orchard - he had 70 apple trees. Here's my translation of one of his more famous poems in his home country of Norway; it's about a garden cat. The cat sits in the yard. When you come, Talk to the cat a little. He is the one who is in charge of the garden.   And here's another famous poem for Olav fans: Don't come to me with the entire truth. Don't bring me the ocean if I feel thirsty, nor heaven if I ask for light; but bring a hint, some dew, a particle, as birds carry only drops away from water, and the wind a grain of salt.   1909   On this day, Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki pledged to give 2,000 Cherry trees to U.S. President William Howard Taft. Taft decided to plant them near the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., in West Potomac Park surrounding the Tidal Basin. The trees arrived in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 1910.   1918  On this day, a daughter of Redmond Washington, Nellie Perrigo, married Chase G. Morris, and her father, William Pulcifer Perrigo, gifted the couple a Camperdown Elm. In fact, William gave each one of his five daughters a Camperdown Elm on their wedding day. He brought the unique trees with him from Scotland. Nellie and Charles posed for their wedding photo in front of her sister June's Camperdown Elm since they were married on her property. Then they planted their own Camperdown Elm in front of their little farmhouse in Carnation, Washington. Five generations of the Morris family lived and played under the family Camperdown Elm. Camperdown Elms have a fascinating history that dates back to 1840. That year, on the estate of the First Earl of Camperdown, the estate forester and Landscaper named David Taylor noticed a contorted young elm tree growing parallel to the ground. Now, what Taylor was looking at was essentially a weeping mutation of the Scotch Elm. Like other weepers, the tree lacked the gene for negative geotropism, so the tree couldn't distinguish which way was up. Taylor dug up the young elm and brought it to the gardens of Camperdown House. And eventually, Taylor grafted cuttings of the weeping elm to Wych Elms, and the result was a tree that became known as a Camperdown Elm - a weeping cultivar of the Scotch Elm. In 1872, the New York florist Adolphus Goby Burgess gifted a Camperdown Elm to the Brooklyn Parks Commission. After receiving the tree from Burgess, it was Frederick Law Olmsted, who decided on the location for it. Seeing that graft was relatively low on the rootstock, Olmsted wisely planted the tree on a small hill near the boathouse at Prospect Parkallowing plenty of room for the weeping branches. By the time the Pulitzer-Winning Poet Marianne Moore fell in love with the Camperdown Elm at Prospect Park, it was in sad shape. Some of the limbs were hollow thanks to rats and carpenter ants. The weak areas of the tree made it vulnerable, and it began to succumb to a bacterial infection as well as general rot. Marianne used her fame and her wit to save the Camperdown Elm. She wrote a poem about the tree which was published in The New Yorker in September 1967. The public read her poem, and the Bartlett Tree Company saved the tree. It still stands today. Now before I read the poem, I'll offer a few definitions. Thanatopsis is the name of a poem written by William Cullen Bryant. It's also a Greek word that means meditation on or thinking about death. Byrant's poem is a consolation; eventually, we all will die. Then, Thomas Cole and Asher Durand were both landscape painters. One of Asher Durand's most famous paintings is called Kindred Spirits. The picture shows two men standing on a rock ledge and shaded by the branches of an enormous elm tree in the Catskill Mountains. The men depicted were the painter, Thomas Cole, and his dear friend, the poet William Cullen Bryant. A curio is something novel, rare, or bizarre.   Here's The Camperdown Elm by Marianne Moore: I think, in connection with this weeping elm, of "Kindred Spirits" at the edge of a rock ledge overlooking a stream: Thanatopsis-invoking tree-loving Bryant conversing with Thomas Cole in Asher Durand's painting of them under the filigree of an elm overhead. No doubt they had seen other trees — lindens, maples and sycamores, oaks and the Paris street-tree, the horse-chestnut; but imagine their rapture, had they come on the Camperdown Elm's massiveness and "the intricate pattern of its branches," arching high, curving low, in its mist of fine twigs. The Bartlett tree-cavity specialist saw it and thrust his arm the whole length of the hollowness of its torso, and there were six small cavities also. Props are needed and tree-food. It is still leafing; Still there. Mortal though. We must save it. It is our crowning curio.   Unearthed Words Today is World Daffodil Day, and there's really one poem that is regarded as the Mother of All Daffodil Poems, and it's this one. I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. — William Wordsworth, English Romantic poet, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud   Grow That Garden Library Dream Plants for the Natural Garden by Piet Oudolf and Henk Gerritsen This book came out in 2013, and it's still one of the best books on modern garden design. Nathaniel Harris approved the joint resolution to make the  Cherokee Rose (Rosa laevigata) Georgia's State Flower. Here's an excerpt from The Atlanta Constitution in 1970 with a little story about the Cherokee Rose: “Four years ago Georgia’s Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin decided that it was high time for a Cherokee rose to be on the grounds of the State Capitol. Secretary of State Ben Fortson, then in charge of the grounds, agreed. Now, it isn't easy to find a Cherokee rose for sale, so a notice was put in The Market Bulletin, inviting someone to donate a Cherokee rose for the Capitol. Within a few days, the commissioner's office was swamped with almost 250 rose bushes. The superabundance spoke well for the generosity of Georgians and their eagerness to cooperate but not so well for their knowledge of the state flower, for less than .1 percent was actually the Cherokee Rose. The others were Macartneys, pasture and prairie roses, Silver Moons, Bengals, multifloras, and "grandma's favorite. There were enough plants for public grounds all over the state, with one or two real Cherokees for the Capitol grounds. Since then several others have been added. There should be plenty of blooms this spring for everyone making the effort to see them. Only a horticulturist can identify a Cherokee rose for sure, but Mrs. Wills once suggested a simple way for the average person to distinguish between the Cherokee and the Macartney which is often confused with it because the blossoms are similar. "The Cherokee," she said, "has only three leaves on a leaf stem; the Macartney has five."

(The transcript of today's important program appears just below and you may want to check out next week's Part 2.) Real Science Radio host Bob Enyart takes lessons from the founder of the discipline of praxeology, as it's been called by Ludwig von Mises, the past leader of the Austrian School of Economics. Taking brilliant insights from von Mises, and working them within the context of a biblical Christian worldview, gives stunning insights into why, just now and unlike ever before, the world has shut down to fight a pandemic. Good for the mind. Great for the soul.   Today's Resource: God's Principles of Government. Join Bob Enyart as he explores God's Principles of Government. From Against Democracy where we look at the biblical principles related to the idea of majority rule, to a Representative Republic and its similarities with democracy, to a real Alternative to Democracy, to what a Bible-based Constitution actually looks like, after this series, the Scriptures' principles of governance will permeate your thinking like never before! Or your money back. (Really.) * Transcript of Today's Program:  As a public service for the COVID-19 pandemic and brought to you by the Crawford family of radio stations, welcoming new RSR listeners in Portland and San Francisco, today we'll present an overview of the coronavirus pandemic. How we got here, where we are at, and what this global experience portends for the future. And we'll rebut a few conspiracy theories and hopefully mitigate some misplaced anger. Real Science Radio has long run as a weekly Bible-based science program out of Denver and during the pandemic its been made available to various Crawford Broadcasting stations. Today, we include the soft science of praxeology, as Ludwig von Mises called it. Von Mises was the recognized leader of what is called the Austrian School, or the more conservative school, of Economics. For RSR to understand what a virus is and how it spreads requires interviewing scientists, like we've done in this series. Audience favorite molecular biologist Kevin Anderson, and world renowned scientists like biochemist Michael Behe and synthetic chemist James Tour and his nanoprobe device, remember that from last week, like a guided missile, seeks out pathogens, attaches and drills into them at three million RPMs, three million revolutions per minute, to destroy them! Yes, many brilliant scientists including those among the most successful in the world, like Dr. James Tour, reject secular origins and trust in Jesus Christ as savior and in the Scriptures as God's Word. But if you want to understand how the world, including our own government, got to this point of near-global extended quarantine, vast economic shut down, and millions of jobs lost, and likely, tens of thousands of failed businesses with employers who will no longer and never again provide jobs for others, these questions fall into the domain, not only of economics, but into the larger realm, of what Von Mises called praxeology, for the study of Human Action. Hence, Mises' masterpiece, which I highly recommend though it was quite a slog to get through it, at a thousand pages, his magnum opus, titled, Human Action. The mass shut down as an early response to a growing worldwide outbreak was bound to happen, eventually. Like a Calvinist who gets a broken leg and, by his theology, believed that this was decreed from eternity past, breaks his leg and says, "Boy, I'm glad that's over with", right, believing that it was unavoidable. Well, about this COVID pandemic, I'm not making any kind of theological argument; not at all. I'm making a praxeological argument, that eventually in human history, a shutdown like this was unavoidably coming, and now that it's here, we can say, once we emerge from it: Glad that's over with. I'll explain why such a shut down was inevitable; and for whatever reasons this started, as we've said on air for, what, two months now, the cure may be worse than the disease. Because, even with the relatively high death toll, we'll lose what, about the same number of people we lost in the Vietnam War, albeit mostly the elderly and those also dying from underlying conditions. Regardless though, and with the world losing a quarter of a million people, eventually, or more, during this, what could be possibly just the first wave of SARS-CoV-2, this coronavirus, the number of people who die from the economic shutdown could potentially dwarf the number of people killed by the disease. Now if that happens, of course that is devastating, but like we'll discuss, a global pandemic-based shutdown has been coming at us for a while and the larger questions, even than whether the cure kills more people than the disease, is What are the principles of morality, justice, and authority, by which governments should make decisions and take actions. Also, from some of the crisis within the crisis, we'll see that we can blame ABC's Shark Tank, including Mark Cuban, Kevin O'Leary Mr. Wonderful, and Daymond John, and the rest, for their vastly overstated claim that an entrepreneur is a fool if, regardless of his reasons, if he does not outsource his production jobs, and move manufacturing overseas. So there's a lot on our plate. As far as economics being a subdiscipline within praxeology, or the study of all human action, which overlaps of course with the field of psychology, we've all heard the observation that movement in the stock market follows greed and fear, and of course, therefore, understanding the financial pages often puts you smack-dab in the middle of psychology. Buy low and sell high. As Warren Buffet said decades ago if you want to make money off the Dow, you need to be fearful when everyone else is greedy and greedy when everyone else is fearful. Back on March 16th, a month ago, the title of our broadcast was, Buy. Buy. Buy. If You Can Buy Stock, Buy! Our live show broadcasts on the most powerful Christian radio station in America, Crawford's AM 670 KLTT out of Denver, and it happens to air at Easter Time, 5 p.m. By then the market is closed, and we always consider those listening via streaming around the country regarding our live program. So that day and over the next five trading days, the market was at its lowest point since the coronavirus hit; the Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 large U.S. businesses, had been hovering for two months mostly over 29,000 and flirting with 30,000, and then it dropped precipitously to, what, around 20,000, and even below, so almost a 30% pandemic-related drop. We just heard from one of our listeners in Alaska. He said that in listening to the program for decades, he had never heard us give a buy or sell recommendation; we don't do that. And up there in Fairbanks, he had been out of the market. So he transferred a lot of money in, and by the time he bought, within a few days of that program, he couldn't have timed it better and he's ecstatic. So, as praxeologists, the study of human behavior, we Bible-based Christians should be the best around, because you understand an automobile better when you understand how it was made. And you understand people better when you understand how we were made, and if you notice who is following the manufacturers recommended maintenance plan, and who is ignoring it. After all, this very program is brought to you by God, maker of heaven and earth and other fine products! So, I said that this government-imposed shutdown has been coming at us for sometime. Why is that? As we discuss in our Principles of Governance seminars and broadcasts, which are indexed in our archives, when you are trying to understand government behavior, and even, the principles by which governments should operate, use the analogy of a family. Afterall, the dispensation of human government, as many theologians call it, began when God instituted the death penalty, in contrast to what He did before the flood, the global flood, when He prohibited the death penalty. And yet, just as He changed the rules about eating animals, for likewise very deliberate and important reasons, He changed, 180 degrees reversal, His prohibition against execution to mandating it, in Genesis 9, for every convicted murderer. Now this command was given to Noah, as the head of his household, and that established the authority for human government, first through patriarchies, then tribes, then villages, to city states, and their daughter villages, their suburbs, to nations, and finally, even to empires. To simplify the rules of governance, including foreign policy, you can do what Von Mises so often recommended, and use a thought experiment. Consider a group of families that suddenly find themselves living in a frontier where there is no established governmental authority. You can confidently figure out, especially if you have a reasonable biblical understanding, both the way families should behave in such a circumstance, within their own homes, and toward one another, and you can figure out how they are likely to behave, within their own homes, and as they interact with one another. And this will give you tremendous insight into how governments should function, and how they are likely to function. So, the proper extent and the just functions of government authority; how nations should interact with one another and how they will likely interact. So this shutdown approach to a flu-like pandemic has never happened before [that is, the extent of the shutdown, throughout most of the economy, and the nation, and much of the world]. But its been a longtime coming because of the world's growing prosperity. Wealthy nations do things, and face problems, the scope of which mankind has never faced before. Here's a minor example. Wealthy nations are fat nations. Obesity was mostly an American problem at first, at a global level. Not because we were less disciplined, but because tens of millions of us could afford, including many who didn't even have a job, we bought all the junk food, ice cream, and candy we could shove in our face. Then as the rest of the world caught up, guess what happened? They got fat too. Turns out the media was wrong. It wasn't because Americans cared less about our health. It wasn't that Europeans were more health conscious; they're just far less wealthy than we are. The same problem with male delayed adolescence with millions of young men spending a decade or more caring mostly about playing video games, and watching pornography in their parents' basement, and not getting married until their 30s. Prosperity, obsessively violent adrenaline-pumping games, decriminalized sexual entertainment, and now add to all that increasingly decriminalized marijuana, and it's all-but destroying a generation. And many of these problems, including the wondrous yet pernicious problem of widespread wealth, has never before been dealt with on such a vast demographic scale. With a lousy job you can make more than enough money to watch porn, play video games, get high, and eat junk food, until you're 28 years old, and beyond. Bty the way, today is April 20th, that's 4/20, when a few million potheads go out of their way to make sure that they're high today. So please, urge those you know to not smoke pot, and Google: Negative effects of marijuana, or just go to our website, rsr.org/pot where we've worked with some of the world's leading experts on the terrible mental health, physical and moral health problems associated with cannabis. But back to the wealth crisis, and this is all to understand why, and why now, governments have shut down our economies to fight the coronavirus. Vast national wealth also brings with it predictable challenges. Those who say that the masses are not wealthy, relatively speaking, don't remember the past. What would a well-off family do if they thought that a growing epidemic had a good chance of killing one of their kids? I've asked that exact question to a dozen successful parents over the last two months. They've told me what we all know they would say. That they would go to any length they could, if they really thought that there was a good chance that one of their kids might pick up an infection that had a likely chance of killing them. For example, some folks said things like, we'd move to Tonga, you know in the South Pacific, for the duration of the pestilence. We'd hunker down and not leave the house until the plague had passed. We'd send our kids to live with their grandparents in Siberia. Literally. In other words, if you can afford it, you would go to extraordinary lengths, even if you couldn't really afford it, and it might bankrupt you, you would do above and beyond anything you had previously imagined, if you thought one of your kids might die, and you had some chance of saving them. Poorer families, on the other hand, can't even think in such terms. Compare what Bill Gates would do to protect his family, wife Melinda, and his kids, his son Rory, and daughters Jennifer and Phoebe? Yes, he's a pro-abortion, moral monster. He did help much of the world out of poverty, and for that, he deserves his wealth, however he's an all-but-declared enemy of biblical morality. In the 1980s I worked for him in Redmond Washington. He once flamed me, as we'd say back then, with an angry email of two screens worth of text, from Bill Gates; I didn't even read the whole thing. I was busy. And as I've too often mentioned, I had dinner at his home back when he was still a bachelor, before he had even bought much furniture. There wasn't even a table and chairs for us to eat at. It was funny. Anyway, if he had to, he'd buy the whole Hawaiian island of Lanai, which in fact he [temporarily shut down] about a decade after I worked for him, for his wedding. He'd spend billions to buy an entire island if he though it would protect his kids. What would a typical family, say, in Kenya do? If there's a plague coming across Africa and it's headed right for their family. What would a typical family in Kenya do? The answer is, they'd wait for it. There's virtually nothing that they could do. Or that they would think they could do. Epidemiologists for decades have been telling governments and the public how to slow down or even stop the spread of an infectious disease. Until now though, nations didn't have the wealth, or at least, they didn't think they had the wealth, to follow their advice. Go back a century to the Spanish flu, 1918, a quarter of the world's population was infected, about 500 million people, and estimates vary of the death toll, but all recognize it as one of the deadliest events pandemics in history. So let's take the smallest estimate, of about one percent of the world population, so that if you were alive then, if you personally knew 200 people, two of them would be killed by the plague. Careful estimates range up to 5% of the world's population, or one out of every 20 people, dying. So go back a hundred years, go back, to let's say, London, in 1850. What if they had a plague like that. When ]you think of their current deaths in the United Kingdom, they're approaching what, 17,000 deaths. Well London back, 150 years ago, they had a population of what, two and a half million people. If they tried to quarantine, lock down the city, let alone the whole country, for six weeks, two months, three months. Within the first six weeks, half the population of London would be dead. You'd have a million people starve to death. If it were in winter they'd freeze to death. So it is prosperity that has enabled governments to think, at some point, it's been coming for a long time at some point, that they could implement what epidemiologists were telling them for decades now, that they could do to stop people from dying. Now these scientists, they are important and they have valid insights, but they're not inerrant, and they're not praxeologists, right, they're not economists, and so they're not good at estimating how many people will be killed by their cure, for the opposite of an increased standard living, what we call economic decline, that kills people. Instead of living, and living better, they live worse, and they die. And that happens both when wealth increases, especially rapidly, and when, including rapidly, it decreases. Remember that China's scientists, twice, earlier this century, unintentionally allowed the SARS virus to escape from the Chinese Institute of Virology. Now that's not in Wuhan, but in Beijing. But they did a pretty good job, compared to what they did with this coronavirus, of slowing and stopping the spread. It's like the sailor who gets a commendation for securing a loose canon, and then has to walk the plank, because he's the one who let it get loose in the first place. About 800 people did end up dying, but China began by quarantining all 200 staffers from the lab, for weeks in a nearby hotel which they locked down; and they took other measures. Most of the dead were in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and a few dozen in Singapore and even Canada. So, epidemiologists, some of whom are both helpful, and guilty, do have some valid ideas of how to slow down, or possibly even stop, the spread of a disease. You can expect a wealthy nation to behave like a wealthy family, including in a crisis. Add to that, our governing leaders who have virtually no knowledge, or concern, for what God says about the just function of government. And you can be sure that leaders will not know where the proper boundaries of their authority lie. And you can also be sure that those who are angry at their government, including some in this audience right now, whether they hate the government or are just angry at it, many of them will themselves, have very little knowledge of what God says about how governments should function, or know how to apply valid principles of governance during a pandemic. If we replaced any number of our leaders, with, say, the same number of our Christian leaders, do you think the final death toll would be lower than it will be under the current regime? Or, how about this. Do you think that fewer people would be angry at their decisions, than are currently angered? One rule we have here at Real Science Radio is, don't get angry at people for doing things that we ourselves couldn't do any better. Some governing leaders hate their own people. In addition to abortion, by which they have dismembered and otherwise killed millions of their own youngest boys and girls, in addition to that, some have slaughtered millions of their own, I could put it the way Antonin Scalia put it.  They have slaughtered millions of their own walking-around-people. Now he put it that thoughtlessly. A few years back I had the honor of giving a presentation, it's now on YouTube, against theistic evolution, on the beautiful campus in Malibu, of Pepperdine University. And there, former justice Antonin Scalia said, and Christians think that he was pro-life, he said that if Congress passed a law banning abortion, he would strike it down. Why? Because he'd rather people fight over killing the unborn at the local level. Now that's absurd. Anyway, not all leaders hate their own people, or at least, say, their walking-around people. Another Austrian conservative author, Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn wrote in his brilliant work, Leftism Revisited. that some leaders actually think of their citizens the same way that a father thinks of his children. By the way, his is another great book, and at a mere 500 pages, it's still quite the slog; boy, these Austrians really know how to write! If you want to watch your nation go broke faster, see what happens when millionaires end up in charge. The Clintons went from donating Bill's underwear, literally, it's on their old tax returns, and taking a deduction for each pair, they went from that, to controlling a two-billion dollar foundation. For like the Bible says about Judas, explicitly, the Bible says that Judas didn't actually care about the poor, but he said he did because he would take money designated for the poor, he'd take the money for himself. That's a perfect summary of socialist politicians. It's something, that very thing in fact, is in the headlines, describing Pope Francis in the Vatican, right now! Taking the money from all over the world, that Catholics put in their poor boxes. I was raised Catholic, I was an altar boy for a couple years. And in the back of every church in the vestibule there's a little box and it says, For the poor. Poor people put their money in it for other poor people. It turns out that the Pope has been spending that very money on his own budget. Wow. So wealthy politicians and those who become wealthy in office, they're especially inclined to have a socialist  mindset. Like right now, giving a thousand dollar check to everybody, to a hundred million of us, whether you need it or not. And "printing" money, put printing in quotes, printing trillions of dollars, so we can spread that around also, in a socialist hope of reducing the lethality of the quarantine cure. We don't need a conspiracy to figure out how this started. Mental illness is widespread, including among Christians, with paranoia, the susceptibility to conspiracy theory, being one of the easiest symptoms to diagnose your health issue. Now, regarding the crisis within the crisis, China produces much of our most vital pharmaceuticals, medicines, emergency medical supplies, and even much of the equipment, not to mention so much of everything else. And while I've always loved Shark Tank, I've also been critical of them for a couple reasons. One is that routinely they will skewer an entrepreneur who wants to manufacture in America. To them, a hundred times over, it mattered nothing that they could be weakening America, or taking away jobs that American business owners wanted to give to their neighbors. And so that mindset, profit is great; and greed will blind you to bigger issues, including matters of national security and economic health. Don't get me wrong. The cheaper provider, doing the same job, is almost always the wisest choice, except that, manufacturing your widget, often, is not the entire consideration, and they've always presented it as though it were. I've always openly and aggressively hated the Chinese communist government. Our church has even gone to protest their communist leader a decade ago when he came to Colorado Springs. And I've hated the idea that instead of always condemning them and pushing for the liberation of their 1.4 billion people that Donald Trump was always talking about getting a better "deal" from the Chinese, that is, from their slave labor. And I've always said the opposite whenever Trump would praise their president. So I don't think I'm inclined to err on their behalf. But they did not intentionally infect the world. They're nothing if not deliberate, long-term players. This was a combination of hubris and incompetence. Yes, they shut down Wuhan flights within China, in fact, they shut down the whole Hubei province from travel to the rest of the country. Let's dig in and add some accuracy to this story that's overlooked by the enraged right. And our goal is to think through the conspiracy theory now widely circulating especially among Christians, that China had some kind of plan to infect the world. So, when did they shut down Hubei, including Wuhan air travel within China? Let's see my notes here. That was January 23rd. Now the whole province has about half a dozen airports, and only one international, the Wuhan International Airport. So they were all closed to fights outside of Hubei province. And by the way, the Wuhan airport stayed closed for about ten weeks, until April 8th. So January 23rd till April 8th. In mid January, quite a bit was already going on, publicly, worldwide even, before they closed down those flights. On January 11th, China made their first nationwide announcement of the illness, which means of course that's when it became widely known about, around the world. Its state media reported the illness in Wuhan. Then, and this is easier to recall for Americans, ten days later, on January 21st, we had our first [publicly known] case here. It was, as you'll recall, in the state of Washington. The world was on the lookout for this virus. By then it had just shown up in Japan, South Korea and Thailand. Then two days later, on that January 23rd date, China closed off Wuhan by canceling planes and trains leaving the city. They suspended all public transportation in the city and apparently, throughout the province, buses, subways and even ferries were closed down. By this point, it was known publicly that at least 17 people had died and about 600 were infected, including then also in Taiwan. Then, and this is where the conspiracy theorists get energized, apparently, based on public reports we have of a February 4th announcement, China's Civil Aviation Administration ordered local airlines to keep operating international flights to countries that HAD NOT imposed restrictions on inbound travel to China. So that's been reported including by Reuters news agency, that's an extremely biased leftist source, but one that nonetheless, frequently does report the basic dates and facts correctly. People are angry, including people who have lost jobs, and businesses even, and see no way of financially recovering. They don't need us to pile on and give them a boogeymen to be enraged at. China has plenty of guilt for what we know that they've done to cover up the crisis, mistreat, and even disappear their own doctors, journalists, and experts. So why would China continue flights to the rest of the world, according to conspiracy theorists, and then according to a rational assessment. Well the conspiracy claims that they had an intentional plan to infect the world to give them an economic advantage. That seems absurd on its face. We'll talk about why. The claim continues like this. If the rest of the world is reeling from a pandemic, then China will have an economic advantage because they won't be reeling, except they were infected themselves, for starters, and they've lied about their numbers, which have apparently been much greater than they've publicized. On its face that theory seems absurd and will be believed by people who are inclined to paranoia and looking for an outlet for their fear and their anger, someone to blame, and especially because they think that this extreme accusation against China somehow helps their own favorite politician. Okay then, what's the rational assessment? First, it completely discounts the conspiracy claim, because China, again, is nothing if not a deliberate, long-term player. To gain some kind of supposed short-term economic advantage, they would be sacrificing decades of prosperity, when they've had a hundred million people just barely climbing out of poverty. They'd have to give all that up, and go backwards. For clearly, intentionally spreading a disease to the rest of the world is not something that could be hidden, especially after the Wuhan outbreak had become known worldwide. They would enrage more than a hundred countries, and infect and devastate even their allies, like Iran. They would become a global pariah, which they have become anyway, apart from the conspiracy theories. This was not a biological weapon engineered in a lab. The scientific evidence strongly refutes that claim. And this was not intentionally spread to the world, so they could take some kind of economic advantage. The world would be highly motivated to reduce, some countries cut off, all trade with China. And that trade is exactly what has been bringing them out of 70 years of communism-induced poverty. It is that trade that has built up their military. It is that trade that has enabled them to create the technology to control almost a billion and a half people. And they know that. Trade has been vital for their already struggling economy. For them to hatch this scheme would mean that they were willing to sacrifice decades of increasing prosperity, for, what? For nothing. Because their trade would collapse. Instead, it was what we see in tyrants generally. It was hubris, and incompetence. By the uncontrolled arrogance of the left, especially of communist tyrants, but even of the Nancy Pelosis and Hillary Clintons of the world. They put themselves up on pedestals, as though there were gods. And when you look at their policies, they do seem to think that they are gods, passing legislation that appear to, attempt to defy the very laws of nature itself, and certainly, that would defy human nature. So a communist leader thinks that what he says is law. And that even nature itself will obey him. So they lie about an outbreak as it inexorably explodes to where the whole world knows that they lied. And then in their incompetence and hubris, they hoard medical supplies for themselves violating even their own manufacturing commitments to the world. And they shut down travel within China. But again, in hubris, think, well if countries are still flying here, we're not going to shut down flights back to those countries. That's their decision. [Of course, based even just on the number of planes available in any fleet or nation, no airline or country, including China, could sustain continuing to send flights out of their country unless those same planes were first flying into their country. So the countries that planes were flying into, out of China, were the same countries that continued of their own volition, and with some recklessness, to fly planes into China.] Those countries, they know that there's an outbreak here, and if they're so stupid to fly here, then fine. Whatever business and help they bring along, on those flights, we could use it. And their problems, are their problems. So, we're out of time. We'll finish this on our next RSR COVID show. And until then, to forward this Crawford-sponsored public service program to a friend, just go online to rsr.org. That's r-s-r dot o-r-g. This is Bob Enyart for my co-host Fred Williams and Real Science Radio, may God bless you

Get Together with Technology (GTT) Sponsored by the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB)   GTT is an exciting initiative of the Canadian Council of the Blind, founded in Ottawa in 2011 by Kim Kilpatrick and Ellen Goodman.  GTT aims to help people who are blind or have low vision in their exploration of low vision and blindness related access technology.  Through involvement with GTT participants can learn from and discuss assistive technology with others walking the same path of discovery.    GTT is made up of blindness related assistive technology users, and those who have an interest in using assistive technology designed to help blind and vision impaired people level the playing field.  GTT groups interact through social media, and periodically meet in-person or by teleconference to share their passions for assistive technology and to learn what others can offer from their individual perspectives.    Show Notes: August 28, 2019   Microsoft Soundscape A map delivered in 3D sound by Microsoft Corporation   Microsoft Soundscape was recently released in Canada in both official languages, Canadian French and English.  You can download Soundscape free for iOS from the App Store here.    Presenting over the Zoom Conference to the GTT New Westminster group were Amos Miller, the Product Manager for Microsoft Soundscape Research in Redmond WA, and Jarnail Chudge, a technology designer and user experience expert on the team.   Microsoft Soundscape uses 3D audio technology to enhance your awareness of what is around you, and thereby help you get around and explore your surroundings.     Soundscape will place audio cues and labels in 3D space such that they sound like they are coming from the direction of the points of interest, parks, roads and other features in your surroundings.   You will need a pair of stereo headsets that you feel comfortable wearing outdoors. For example, bone conduction headsets, Apple AirPods and in-ear open headphones have proven to work well.   Soundscape is designed to live in the background and provide you with effortless ambient awareness. Therefore, feel free to use it in conjunction with other apps such as podcasts, audio books, email and even GPS navigation.   Key features:   - As you walk, Soundscape will automatically call out the key points of interest, roads and intersections that you pass. These can be adjusted and turned on and off.   - An audio beacon can be placed on a point of interest, and you will hear it as you move around. You can place an audio beacon on a point of interest that you would like to track such as your destination, a point to return to or a landmark you are familiar with.   - “My Location” describes your current location and the direction you are facing.   - "Nearby Markers" describes nearby places you have marked.   - “Around Me” describes nearby points of interest in each of the four cardinal directions, helping with orientation. Try this out when getting off a bus or leaving a train station.   - “Ahead of Me” describes points of interest in front of you, for example when walking down the street.   - The expandable Callout History section lets you review callouts you have heard, repeat callouts, hear more information about them, and more.   We hope you enjoy the experience. We believe that this kind of technology offers a new way to relate to the environment around you and we can't wait to hear what you make of it.   If at any time you have any questions about Soundscape, please refer to the Help & Tutorials section available on the main menu or if you require further help then you can contact the Disability Answer Desk on 1-800-936-5900 which is a free of charge service.   This work started out in 2010/2011 when Amos was still in the UK. He was involved with the local guide dog organization there, and working with them to try and figure out how technology can integrate into our own independence and mobility when we're out and about, but in a way that enhances that experience. Some people from Microsoft started working with mobility instructors, and guide dog and cane users. We explored a range of ideas long before we figured out how to solve the problem. We landed on this notion of how important it is to enhance the awareness, but not tell the person what to do in that space. A lot of what orientation and mobility trainers will do with us is to work on a specific route, but especially how to perceive the environment, how we read the cues that the environment is giving us from a sound perspective, echo location, traffic noise, direction of the wind, the tactile feeling of the ground: all of the signals we can get from the environment in order to orient, and make good navigational decisions. The work that we did with Guide Dogs in the early days of Soundscape was really to see how we can build on that. The idea of sound playing a big role in the perception of the space, was really how this idea evolved. Soundscape as an ap, is the first incarnation of that idea.   The ap is free, and available from the Ap Store. It does rely on map data, and so it does need to be able to access that data. For the most part, it will download the necessary data from the environment that you're in, and from that point forward it's not using data. So it's not constantly drawing on your data plan, but it does require one. We've tried to optimize it so that the data usage is minimal, and in certain situations, it will also work in areas where there is no data.   Bose frames are a very good way to get the stereo effect, as are Bone conducting headphones. EarPods or standard headphones will work, but they will block your ears to ambient sound. Putting it in one ear to keep the other ear free won't be effective because you won't get the signature 3D effect. Amos said that he personally likes EarPods because of their sound quality, and it's possible to insert them lightly into the ear and still have ambient sound. Some sports headphones are a good solution too, Plantronics for example. This type of headphone rests around the back of your neck, and clips over the ear. They sit in front of the ear canal without blocking it. They're used commonly by runners and cyclists.   Users can email soundscapefeed@microsoft.com and that comes to the Microsoft Soundscape team. There is also a feedback button in the ap itself.    For more information please contact your GTT Coordinators:   Albert Ruel                   or                       Kim Kilpatrick 1-877-304-0968,550                               1-877-304-0968,513 albert.GTT@CCBNational.net                GTTProgram@Gmail.com   CCB Backgrounder:   The CCB was founded in 1944 by a coalition of blind war veterans, schools of the blind and local chapters to create a national self-governing organization. Todd's 2nd shot on the par 5 landed 6 inches in front of the hole, bounced left, then bounced right and stayed inches from the hole. It would have been a record (as far as I can discover, a world record). In this interview, I probed Todd about what was going through his mind as he reached the tee box on the 2nd hole.
