Singapore prime minister defends exclusive deal with Taylor Swift that riles some neighbors

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was called on during a key regional summit on March 5 to defend an exclusive deal his city-state struck with Taylor Swift that prevents the pop star from taking her current The Eras Tour anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Swift performed six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore under an exclusive deal that has been criticized by some Southeast Asian neighbors who complain they have been deprived of the tourist boom that her concerts have brought elsewhere. In a sign of the international phenomenon that Swift has become, the veteran Singaporean statesman was asked by a journalist to confirm the deal and to comment on whether it undermined the spirit of cooperation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a 10-nation bloc known by the acronym ASEAN of which Singapore is a key member. Lee confirmed that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” from a government fund established to rebuild the tourism industry after COVID-19 disruptions to make Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination. He did not say how much the deal cost. “It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don't see that as being unfriendly,” Lee said. Lee suggested that if Singapore hadn't struck an exclusive deal, a neighboring country might have done so. “Sometimes one country makes a deal, sometimes another country does. I don't explicitly say ‘you will come here only on condition that you'll not go to other places,'” Lee said. Swift's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “If that's what's needed to be done to get an outcome which is mutually beneficial and which, from Singapore's point of view, serves not just to grow the economy but also to bring in visitors and goodwill from all over the region, I don't see why not,” Lee said. “If we had not made such an arrangement, would she have come to someplace else in Southeast Asia or more places in Southeast Asia? Maybe, maybe not. These are things that she will decide,” Lee added. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Ahead of the much anticipated rally, former Nominated Member of Parliament Walter Theseira, Associate Professor for Economics at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, and Nadia Samdin, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, and member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development - share their perspectives on key issues such as housing, rising cost of living and support for an ageing population. Presented by: Lynlee Foo & Ryan Huang This podcast is produced and edited by Yeo Kai Ting (ykaiting@sph.com.sg)   Highlights:  (00:00) Introduction (01:59) Nadia - can you broadly tell us your wishlist for this year's NDR, based on the issues that you've encountered on-the-ground as an MP? (02:49) Walter, you've got a lot that you watch - you've got your eye on the economy, you've got your eye especially on the transport sector. So, what's your wishlist looking like? (04:06) Let's talk about housing - it's something that many of us are passionate about and we've seen the government introduce cooling measures such as higher additional buyer's stamp duty (ABSD) rates for residential property in April. Based on your interactions with residents, what are the top concerns and aside from affordability, what other issues have they raised? (05:19) It's a very interesting mix of priorities. You mentioned SERS for the older bunch, they want to stay where they are typically, whereas the other bunch want to see higher prices. So there's a very tough balance, right? (06:19) Looking at the May Day Rally, Walter, we had DPM Lawrence Wong, he said, "When you think about affordability, please don't just look at the headline price of the BTO flat; also consider how the price relates to income, as well as the proportion of income that's needed to service the housing loan." How does that pair up with how income is moving? Are there particular sectors that could benefit from a push on that front?  (08:04) Walter - could you weigh in on the challenges behind keeping home prices affordable against market forces?  (10:00) Nadia - let's talk about the rising costs of living, when you talk to the residents around you, and walk the grounds, what are you hearing from them, where's the pinch and what areas do you feel need more support?  (10:59) Linking that to ageing and putting into context here, 1 in 4 will be a senior by 2030. Against that backdrop, what enhancements do you hope to see - is it more on infrastructure or the softer side of things? (12:36) Walter, when you talk about some of the economic benefits out there behind ramping up efforts for infrastructure to tackle ageing, how do we stack up against other countries on that front? What more should we be looking at?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NTU don says votes should determine whether Singaporeans can stomach politicians involved in such affairs. Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at social issues of the day with guests. July 17 marked the death knell of not one, but four political careers. Just hours before the shock resignations of former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and ex-Tampines GRC MP Cheng Li Hui, a leaked video circulated online, showing former Workers' Party MP Leon Perera stroking the hand of fellow party member Nicole Seah. This would spark an investigation by the largest opposition party, and result in the pair stepping down. But is it necessary for MPs to resign because of their private indiscretions? Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in Parliament on Aug 2 that there was no direct reporting line between the Speaker and an MP, and so a legitimate relationship would not be objectionable. Moreover, politicians worldwide have been embroiled in extramarital affairs, to no detriment to their careers. So are Singaporeans just over-invested in the private lives of public figures? Or must politicians be held to higher standards? In this episode, ST journalists Ang Qing and Aqil Hamzah host Nanyang Technological University's School of Social Sciences don Walid Jumblatt, 38, and National University of Singapore political science and philosophy student Maximilian Oh, 23, to learn about how different generations view the issue. What did you make of the session which lasted more than two hours?   (02:48) Going into this parliamentary session, there was a high level of interest from the public and a lot of questions people had in their minds. How much do you that went into answer at least some of them, these burning questions that people had? (04:22) You mentioned briefly about the CPIB investigation, I'm sure details will surface in due course. But in your opinion, would this indirectly lower the morale in the public service? (06:15) What's your current reading of the extent of impact on the ruling party PAP's 'whiter than white' branding? (07:31) The Workers' Party has also had its fair share of scandals, including the Raeesah Khan case and more recently, the affair between Leon Perera and Nicole Seah. Are these incidents signalling a shift in our political or even social landscape?  (09:21) Talking about a new beginning, looking back - are there any lessons to draw from this, perhaps that could be applied to maybe policy changes to address some of the issues and questions that have cropped up based on what we've seen in these incidents? (11:40)  Between now and the next election, what really is needed in order to rebuild public trust in the government?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Marking a landmark moment for LGBT+ campaigners in Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong gave an address on Sunday, 21 August 2022 during the National Day rally to confirm the decision to repeal the colonial-era law – Section 377A – which criminalised sex between consenting male adults. The archaic law had not been enforced for decades; in fact, back in February of 2022, the Court of Appeal in Singapore ruled that the law could not be used to prosecute men for having sex. Nevertheless, the decision marks a change in attitudes toward the LGBT+ community in this traditionally minded city as well as a positive first step towards equality for Singaporeans who have been campaigning for this change in the law for many years. We commend the activists and campaign groups who have been and continue to tirelessly fight for equality in Singapore. This historic decision for Singapore follows a similar ruling in India in September 2018 to overturn Section 377, as well as the decision in Taiwan in 2019 to legalise gay marriage, the Sapporo court ruling in Japan that the government's failure to recognise same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and the beginnings of a positive decision in Thailand for same-sex unions earlier this year. All of these moves signal tentative steps across the Asia region towards equality and acceptance both in society and under the protection of governments.   Read More: https://bit.ly/3devq5l

That's a 14% drop from its August peak.  Great Barrier Reef grew 20% more coral In God's good providence, the Great Barrier Reef is doing better than ever, reports Cornwall Alliance.   All climate-change naysayers aside, the Australian Institute of Marine Science reports the reef has roughly 20 percent more coral than last year for another record year.   Coral now covers 34% of the seabed, double the lowest coverage recorded as 12% in 2012.  That makes for the best coverage in recorded history. Boy finds 4,400-year-old fossilized shark tooth And finally, an 8-year-old boy found a fossilized tooth of a gigantic shark, the Angustidens, on a South Carolina beach earlier in August, reports Fox News. The 4.75-inch tooth probably belonged to a 30-foot-long shark that swam the waters around the time of Noah's flood some 4,400 years ago. In Genesis 6:7-8, the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
