Interview with Carly Nemtean & Erica Gelman I've got another bonus round-table discussion episode for you! In this episode, I have a very candid conversation with Carly Nemtean of Carriage Lane Design-Build & The Collective Workspace, and Erica Gelman of Erica Gelman Design, about team building and everything that goes into it! Carly is a special returning guest to our podcast. She was first on the podcast for another bonus episode with Jessica Kelly. Click here to listen. Carly Nemtean is the Co-Founder and Principle Designer of Carriage lane Design Build and recently the Co-Founder and CEO of The Collective Workspace, A coworking space for the Design and Architectural community. Carly graduated from Interior Design at Sheridan College and started her journey into the industry working for design firms. She met her business partner Rocco in 2009 on one of her job sites and soon found herself working for him at Alta Moda Millwork designing their cabinetry. Shortly after, Carly landed an opportunity to be a designer for HGTV’s Property Brothers and brought Rocco and his companies along to create full home updates with the show. Realizing the success of their skills combined, they opened their own boutique design and build firm, Carriage Lane Design Build in 2011.  Erica Gelman is the principal designer of Erica Gelman Design Inc in Toronto. She graduate of the esteemed International Academy of Design & Technology leads the talented team. Erica prides herself on a keen eye for detail; combining formal training with her flair for style and impeccable sense of colour to create truly unique spaces. Erica’s work can be seen in numerous national lifestyle publications. Her design approach is simple yet sophisticated; a combination of lush textures and bold patterns infused together to create timeless designs. Our conversation is incredibly candid while we all share our individual experiences while trying to build a team - from hiring, to training, to placing the right person in the right position, and to the complicated event of losing or firing employees. As a small business owner the onus is on you to plan, to navigate the business (while also designing and interacting with clients), and finally to act as Human Resources - which a lot of us are not equipped for. It can be difficult to grow a team - especially to find the right people to fit your company and your process. Through our chat, Carly and Erica share how they’ve learned to spot some red flags in hiring, some hard-learned lessons through all of their experience hiring, and who they’ve found to help them react efficiently as an employer. Finally, we talk heavily about leadership, which can make or break a team. Leadership drives results! Carly expresses the importance of being a present leader, because a business is only as strong as its team, while Erica speaks to the importance of celebrating your wins, while also acknowledging and learning from your failures.   You can find Carly Nemtean at www.thecollectiveto.com, www. carriagelanedesigns.com, and on Instagram @thecollectiveworkspace.  You can find Erica Gelman at www.ericagelman.com and on Instagram @erica_gelman. -- Want to learn more about my Power of Process course? Patrick Dierson always had a backstage view of what it took to produce a successful theatrical spectacle. Originally from Long Island, N.Y., Patrick grew up within a family that featured two Broadway actors. He spent two years studying Performance Theatre in college, jumping right into the live event industry with an automated lighting equipment company. Shortly after, he would find his niche as a successful console programmer and lighting designer. Dierson's expertise has been called upon for numerous high-level productions, including the world tour of Shakira, the MTV Video Music Awards, numerous world tours for hip-hop entrepreneurs Jay Z, Meek Mill & Drake, numerous events for the the NFL, NBA, NHL, Volkswagen, Samsung and Walmart, multiple festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Made In America, and Tidal X, and speaking tours for former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Patrick's base of operations is now in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, where he currently resides as the Principle Designer at production design firm The Activity. In our first of two episodes with Patrick we discuss the politics around COVID response in the music industry; the idea behind design haven, the Activity; and the importance of operating like a business from the beginning.

Larger companies are developing all encompassing platforms while smaller start-ups are pushing out more specific or niche products. Connected products currently have problems that are limiting mass adoption, which include: Technology components are out of date before the device should be replaced Hardware price is high due to not subsidy or service model Set-up can be difficult and confusing Most products lack a service model beyond selling cloud storage Guus discusses the Apple store allowing for companies to handle subscription based pricing, while Joe opines that subscriptions for individual services will leave a feeling of disconnection and give users more chances to stop a service. IoT and connected device companies should look into a bundling service where HW prices can be offset by recurring service revenue and that a set of products together, with a replacement program can be more successful in leading to mass connected device and home adoption. This week, Guus and Joe talk about building connected tables, and why connected furniture as we're seeing it might not be the best idea. Also an involved discussion about why building prototypes is so important to find out how products connect to user behavior. Joe starts at the top ranting further about Siri and WWDC. The discussion looks at Apples drive to incorporate Siri into current devices, which offers limitations while at home. Guus and Joe briefly look at Amazon and Google offering their solutions to connected home automation and better natural language processing – and why those may be stronger in-home devices. Guus talks about building a connected table with particle.io photon micro-controller and an accelerometer. These components allow the table to record tapping or knocking and control devices around it – including playing mysic and turning on the lights. Guus talks about signal filtering, why it's useful, hooking up the table to our resident bot (aio) to handle natural language commands, and why companies should look more into middle services for user needs - 'The state of messaging' Joe and Guus discuss why the table, and connected furniture that has activation purposes is a bad ideas and why builders need to understand user behavior or risk ending up on the Internet of sh*t. Take a look at our connected on our instagram Guus discusses functions that could be useful based on context and how that might work. A short discussion ensues about a 1984 future where sensors can tack productivity and desk time. Joe and Guus discuss customer journeys for connected devices, why apps are not the answer, and what building bots has taught us in the IoT space. Guus discussed building a bot named aio. Joe shares thoughts around companies losing direct touch points with customers due to 3rd party tools and what a customer journey could look like for a connect device. Looking at moving from the previous 3 screen (laptop, tablet, mobile) and 5 screen (+TV, watch) strategies to a no-screen strategy with voice, chat, and sensors as the main UI users may interact with.More can be found at: raftcollective.comHosts: Joe Fletcher and Guus Baggermans // Creative Director and Principle Designer at Raft collective. Following on the heals of WWDC, Apple announced Apple Home and Siri in the SDK. Joe and Guus explore the UI aspects of the Apple Home app and what we’d like to see in a UI from a smart home application – hint, it’s not an application. We discuss the need for portability of information within a hub, and if an Apple TV is the best hub available. What is means to be trapped in a closed system, and the frustration the Siri isn’t a single brain across devices. We also discuss why OS level integration is the real winning UI of the current phone application and how this may set Apple up to control their own ecosystem better than other 3rd party aggregation applications.More can be found at: raftcollective.comHosts: Joe Fletcher and Guus Baggermans // Creative Director and Principle Designer at Raft collective. Raft’s inaugural podcast, exploring the question that if we have the right technology, why can’t companies create meaningful and useful IoT products in the consumer space. We believe everything should be magical – that devices and technology should fade into the background and everything should just work. For anyone who is an early adopter of IoT consumer technology, they are painfully aware this is not the case. We discuss what it means to have a magical experience, such as the small details of Chromecast, or the broad details of the Disney Magic band. We then break down several reasons why even well meaning companies, create friction in their products. These include: Proprietary technology Too many technology choices The belief that everything needs an application Abandoned products Unsustainability technology in long term usage products Lack of meaningful solutions Factorial and exponential complexity of connected devices Hosts: Joe Fletcher and Guus Baggermans // Creative Director and Principle Designer at Raft collective.
