Apple's response to the UK government's demand for an iCloud backdoor is the topic of discussion on this episode of MacVoices Live!. The panel of Chuck Joiner, David Ginsburg, Eric Bolden, Marty Jencius, Brian Flanigan-Arthurs, Jeff Gamet, Jim Rea, and Mark Fuccio examine Apple's decision to remove end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups in the UK, analyzing whether it was a strategic move to avoid compliance or a broader privacy concern. The implications of government access to user data, the role of Advanced Data Protection (ADP), and whether UK citizens are aware of or reacting to these changes are all at issue. The conversation also highlights how encryption complexities often leave average users vulnerable due to lack of awareness or technical expertise.  This edition of MacVoices is brought to you by our Patreon supporters. The Future of Focused Technology Petter Neby was inspired to create Punkt in 2008 due to his growing concerns about the effects of constant internet access on people's attention spans and lifestyles. His inspiration came from personal experience and observations of how technology, particularly smartphones, was impacting daily life. "With the Internet at our fingertips 24/7, we forget how easy it is to outsource our brains to phones. Choose a restaurant, get directions, ping a friend, go on a date, select some music, download a health app; when in doubt, ask Google. Looking out of a window, sitting on a city bench, chatting to strangers, asking for directions, or getting lost can be great opportunities for serendipity and human interaction. Even boredom, something we avoid more and more with smartphones, is essential for creativity." It's been a wild last year or so in tech. We've seen a marked rise in the development of artificial intelligence, large language models and prolific growth of augmented reality systems. At the same time, it can feel like we're moving backwards as concerns continue to rise about user privacy and the methods by which personal data is collected and monetized. Our guest this week points out that protecting privacy requires tech companies to ditch traditional business models that monetize user surveillance. Meredith Whittaker is president of Signal App and serves as the chief advisor for the AI Now Institute. She joins WITHpod to discuss the rise of big tech, the trajectory of the internet from being more commercialized to open, concerns about tech's role in American democracy, her thoughts on proposed TikTok bans and more.

First, they came for your fingerprint, then they came for your face, and now they want your eyes. What is Apple, Google, Meta and all of the other big tech companies doing with all of your biometric information that defines who you are? Why are they harvesting all of this biometric data? For safety? For privacy? Or for profit? Are they creating clones of us? Are they buying your genetic information from 23andMe? Are they harvesting all of this data just to sell us ads?Is there a deeper story to this?In this episode, I talk about Apple's Vision Pro and how biometric technology, like facial recognition and eye tracking, is changing things. I look at how much personal info these technologies can tell Apple, from who we are to possibly even our health. The show also covers how accurate this tech is and how it might predict diseases in the future. But, it's not all good news. We learn about how companies that sell data, called data brokers, can use our biometric info in ways we might not like. The episode then dives into the not-so-great sides of sharing our biometric data, like privacy worries and how this tech might hurt us. I talk about how important it is to know how our info is used and what we can do to keep our data safe. The conversation ends with advice on staying informed and secure in a world where our personal info is collected all the time.Highlights00:00 Intro and Episode Preview00:55 Impacts of Biometric Technology2:07 How much info do our eyes give Apple?3:03 Accuracy in Facial Recognition3:58 Predicting Diseases5:34 Data Brokers and Your Information8:23 Biometric Data's Negative Impact9:32 Awareness of Information Usage10:56 Privacy Concerns Among People11:22 Our Involvement in Data Collection12:57 Stay Informed, Stay Secure// Let's Connect //Website: https://throughconversations.comNewsletter: https://throughconversations.substack.com?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web&r=1zor7s// Say Hi on Social Media //Twitter: https://twitter.com/thruconvpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thruconvpodcast/?hl=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl67XqJVdVtBqiCWahS776g

Summary Machine learning and generative AI systems have produced truly impressive capabilities. Unfortunately, many of these applications are not designed with the privacy of end-users in mind. TripleBlind is a platform focused on embedding privacy preserving techniques in the machine learning process to produce more user-friendly AI products. In this episode Gharib Gharibi explains how the current generation of applications can be susceptible to leaking user data and how to counteract those trends. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Machine Learning Podcast, the podcast about machine learning and how to bring it from idea to delivery. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Gharib Gharibi about the challenges of bias and data privacy in generative AI models Interview Introduction How did you get involved in machine learning? Generative AI has been gaining a lot of attention and speculation about its impact. What are some of the risks that these capabilities pose? What are the main contributing factors to their existing shortcomings? What are some of the subtle ways that bias in the source data can manifest? In addition to inaccurate results, there is also a question of how user interactions might be re-purposed and potential impacts on data and personal privacy. What are the main sources of risk? With the massive attention that generative AI has created and the perspectives that are being shaped by it, how do you see that impacting the general perception of other implementations of AI/ML? How can ML practitioners improve and convey the trustworthiness of their models to end users? What are the risks for the industry if generative models fall out of favor with the public? How does your work at Tripleblind help to encourage a conscientious approach to AI? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen data privacy addressed in AI applications? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on privacy in AI? When is TripleBlind the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of TripleBlind? Contact Info LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/ggharibi/) Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest barrier to adoption of machine learning today?
