Imagine living in complete comfort - a home that's perfectly warm in winter and delightfully cool in summer, all while your energy bills shrink and your carbon footprint fades. This isn't just a dream; it's what every homeowner and business owner wants: A solution that aligns personal comfort with planetary wellbeing, while keeping more money in their pockets. But here's the challenge we face: traditional heating and cooling systems, which most homes still rely on, are like hungry giants, devouring energy and money with remarkable inefficiency. Gas furnaces burn through fossil fuels, while conventional air conditioners strain electrical grids during peak seasons, especially here in the Phoenix desert. As utility costs soar and climate concerns mount, homeowners find themselves caught between comfort and conscience, between their monthly bills and their environmental impact. The status quo isn't just expensive - it's unsustainable. Enter the heat pump - nature's answer to this modern dilemma. Unlike traditional systems that generate heat through energy-intensive processes, heat pumps perform an elegant dance with natural temperature gradients. They simply move heat from where it isn't wanted to where it is, like a skilled conductor directing an orchestra of comfort. In summer, they guide warm air out of your home; in winter, they extract heat from the outdoor air (yes, even in cold climates) and channel it inside. This natural approach yields remarkable results. For every unit of electricity consumed, heat pumps generate four to five units of heating or cooling energy - an efficiency rate that makes traditional systems look like gas-guzzling relics. They come in various forms: air-source pumps offer an accessible entry point, while geothermal systems tap into the earth's constant temperatures for unmatched efficiency. Water-source variants provide another alternative for homes near suitable water bodies. The transformation is already underway. In the United States, heat pump installations have surpassed traditional gas furnaces in new construction, signaling a shift in how we think about home comfort. As more homeowners discover that they can save money while saving the planet, the momentum only grows. And here's where the story gets even better: the latest generation of heat pumps, powered by silicon carbide technology, pushes these efficiency boundaries even further. In a world grappling with climate change and rising energy costs, heat pumps offer more than just a solution - they provide a path forward. They remind us that sometimes the most powerful answers are the ones that work in harmony with nature, proving that comfort, conscience, and cost savings can coexist beautifully under one roof.   How can Microchip Technology accelerate the benefits of Heat Pump technology to help humans achieve complete comfort?   Links from the episode: www.microchip.com/sic    Guests:  Nitesh Satheesh

Archway Engineering has invested in a drill sharpener from 1st Machine Tool Accessories, and the savings have been incredible. Danielle Toner, Production Manager at Archway, a site drilling equipment manufacturer, is overjoyed with the benefits the company has enjoyed from the new Darex XT-3000. A US-made Darex XT-3000 for repeatedly regrinding carbide and HSS drill bits to ‘as-new' condition was delivered by sole UK sales agent 1st MTA to Archway Engineering's Elland factory in July 2023. By November 2023, it had already paid for itself, as Mrs Toner had not purchased a single new carbide drill in all that time to replace broken or damaged bits. According to the work going through the factory, the saving was between £700 and £1,500 per month. Mrs Toner said: “We did not previously send drills out for resharpening, so worn bits were discarded. The cost was significant, especially for solid carbide drills. One component we regularly machine involves using a 160mm long, single-flute carbide drill, and we previously needed four of them to complete the part. If we ran out of bits, we couldn't finish the job until the next drill delivery, which delayed assembly of our products.” “Now we simply resharpen a bit four times, and we are certain that the component will be finished on time. New carbide drills cost around £165 each, so the saving is considerable and contributes to lowering the cost of production.” This example is by no means exceptional. Another job requires three new carbide drills to make two parts. In a different process, an HSS taper-shank twist drill is put through 30mm thick EN19 high-tensile steel. A TC shoe made from an S355 hot-finish stainless steel tube is drilled in up to 16 places using a split-point, single-flute carbide drill that has to be repeatedly resharpened before the component comes off completely machined. Mrs Toner explained that some bits could be resharpened a dozen times or more, depending on their length, while maintaining top quality. It takes about one minute to sharpen the point, or a little longer if necessary to grind past a chip on a cutting edge. It happens quite often due to the toughness of the materials being machined and also because of a frequent need to drill cross holes at various angles into the wall of tubular components. This tends to damage the cutting edges of a drill as it breaks through. HSS jobber drills from the assembly department are also regularly sharpened, which Mrs Toner describes as ‘a massive saving'. It requires the 220-grit diamond wheel used for sharpening carbide drills to be exchanged for a 180-grit CBN grinding wheel. The process takes about five minutes, so batches of around 20 HSS bits are set aside and resharpened simultaneously. 1st MTA demonstrated the XT-3000 in the Elland factory before Archway Engineering purchased it with an attachment to process bits up to 30mm in diameter. Left and right-hand drills can be processed, and attachments are available for sharpening step drills, countersink and spot drills, and others with a 90-degree point. Standard sizes of carbide drills used regularly by the site drilling manufacturer are 8, 10, 12 and 14mm in diameter and up to 6XD in length. However, bits from 3 to 21mm in diameter can be accommodated in normal use. It resharpens bits in a three-step process. A drill is placed in a finger chuck, and the protrusion length is set at an alignment station. Carbide fingers enter the flute to fix the rotational orientation, and the drill is tightened in that position by rotating the chuck clockwise. The grinding motor is then started, and at a second station, the drill is sharpened on both sides while clamped in the same chuck. In an optional last operation, the chuck holding the sharpened drill is presented to a third station for point splitting to shorten the chisel line and lessen the force required for drilling components. In conclusion, Mrs Toner observed: “The savings that the Darex XT-3000 brings make it an obvious investment once you realise the benefits. We wish we had done it much earlier. The sharpener paid for itself in less than six months, after which the ongoing monthly savings continue to add to the profit margin on all jobs that require drilling operations, which is most of them.” “The sales arguments that 1st MTA make are difficult to ignore. We also purchase Chick workholding products from them, which have doubled productivity on one of our machining centres, and the supplier has also provided us with a new chuck for one of our lathes.”

Our insatiable appetite for information has gone digital. Once upon a time, knowledge seekers ventured into libraries, thumbing through card catalogs and dusty volumes. Today, we simply speak our questions in the form of a prompt, and artificial minds spring to life with answers. But this convenience comes with a hidden cost - one measured in terawatts. In the sprawling datacenters that power our AI revolution, rows upon rows of servers hum with activity, each query demanding its share of electricity. These digital brains, built on advanced processing chips from companies with trillion-dollar valuations on the stock market, consume power at rates that would make earlier computers blush. Tech giants like the “Magnificent 7” aren't waiting for solutions - they're creating them. Their "Bring Your Own Energy" approach, investing in nuclear power after years of renewable energy projects, signals a recognition that our digital future requires more than just solar panels and wind turbines. The mathematics of our energy future is both simple and staggering. Current datacenter power supplies, even those meeting the stringent 80 Plus Titanium standard with 90% efficiency, still waste enough energy to power small cities. Every percentage point of efficiency gained or lost has massive implications for our planet and our pockets. Enter silicon carbide, a material that promises to revolutionize how we handle power. Like a master conductor leading an orchestra, silicon carbide manages electricity with unprecedented precision and efficiency. Whether it's guiding power from a nuclear plant through an omnidirectional grid or converting it for use in a datacenter server rack, this remarkable semiconductor reduces waste at every step. Think of the power grid as a vast river system. Traditional materials are like leaky canals, losing precious energy along the way. Silicon carbide creates superhighways for electricity, ensuring more power reaches its destination. In the world of datacenters, where every watt counts, this efficiency isn't just an improvement - it's a necessity. As we stand at this crossroads of digital transformation and energy demand, the path forward becomes clear. The answer isn't just about generating more power - it's about using it more intelligently. Silicon carbide technology offers us a way to quench our growing thirst for energy without draining our resources dry. The future we're building, with its artificial intelligence at the helm, demands power on an unprecedented scale. But with innovations like silicon carbide leading the charge, we're not just facing this challenge - we're transforming it into an opportunity for a more efficient, sustainable world.   How can Microchip Technology help prepare us for the future energy demands data centers and AI will require?   Links from the episode: www.microchip.com/sic    Guest: Nitesh Satheesh

On the banks of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County, in the northeast corner of the state of Pennsylvania, just outside the town of Berwick; population 10,355; lies a nuclear power plant. As you drive down route 11, you can see the steam pouring out of its mammoth towers over the tops of the trees. This is the single source of power in the area for a 20-mile radius. That means the 2500 megawatts of power it generates must cover an area of 1300 square miles and convert for every possible need within that geography. Columbia County has a little over 64,000 people. Of all the energy we harvest and generate, we lose more than 2/3rds of it due to transmission, conversion, distribution, and what experts call “rejected”. This may not seem like a big deal in the Pennsylvania countryside but try a metropolis like Manhattan or the entire energy needs of a country like the United States and you're talking about a hemorrhaging of money and efficiency. One of the pillars of modern society, the power grid, teeters on the brink of obsolescence. In this realm, vast amounts of energy are generated, only to be squandered through inefficiencies, unidirectional flow, passive transformers, and countless conversion points. It is a system that is in danger of outliving its usefulness, struggling to meet the demands of an increasingly electrified world. Recent news stories have highlighted the challenges faced by our aging power infrastructure, as it groans under the weight of the terawatt hours required to power our cities, our transportation, our ever-growing array of personal electronics and smart homes. Don't forget a little thing called AI. But amidst this landscape of inefficiency and waste, a glimmer of hope emerges. Distributed energy resources, solid-state transformers, and innovative storage solutions, powered by the likes of silicon carbide, offer a path forward. By harnessing these technologies, we can preserve the power we generate, ensuring that as many watts as possible are used to their fullest potential. It's a world that's not too far away, but we have a choice: to cling to the vestiges of a bygone era or to embrace the promise of a more efficient, sustainable future. With each passing day, the imperative grows clearer – we must adapt, we must innovate, and we must evolve, for the sake of our planet and the generations to come. As we enter the third wave of silicon carbide, some BIG ideas are propelling what could be a very prosperous future.   How can Microchip Technology help fix the inefficiencies of modern power grids?   Links from the episode:     Guests:  Dr. Kevin Speer

At that point, he decided to go into the cybersecurity industry.   He is a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).   On the podcast, Darren would love to talk about:   How to engage your team in cybersecurity to build a secure by-default company in a way that enables you to breeze through audits and assessments while, at the same time, being something your team enjoys.  How to showcase your company's cybersecurity posture in a way that helps you close deals faster and earn greater customer trust. How to make cybersecurity and data privacy a part of your service or product offering. This topic would interest startups and service companies that provide tools and services outside of IT and security and service companies like MSPs that can benefit from adding security products and services to their offerings. How fast-growing organizations achieve enterprise-class security and privacy.   To get a sense of Darren, here's an episode he did on the Privacy Please Podcast, where he shared advice for founders on securing their startups.   Quick recap Summary Darren's Cybersecurity Journey and Insights Darren and Michael discussed Darren's background and experience in cybersecurity and data privacy. Darren shared his unconventional entry into the field, having previously worked in various leadership roles before focusing on security. He emphasized the importance of security no longer being a "bolt-on" but an essential component of leadership and business operations. He also mentioned his current role as a board member for the International Information System Security Certification Consortium and his upcoming plans for the quarter. Michael showed interest in understanding more about Darren's insights. Turbine's AI Integration and Business Model Shift darrengallop, the CEO and co-founder of Turbine cyber security and data privacy company, discussed the company's development and future plans in the meeting. He elaborated on how they have been using AI and machine learning (ML) as a component of their product, which was launched in December after about a year of development. Darren also shared that they have shifted their business model to encompass AI to enhance the human experience and better support their customers. He further discussed his passion for cyber security and data privacy, especially in healthcare and manufacturing industries. The conversation then moved to the fast-paced world we live in, with Michael jokingly relating his recent stress test experience to the ever-accelerating speed of technology. Cybersecurity Leadership and Prioritization Michael emphasized the critical importance of cybersecurity and the need for it to be a top priority within organizations, arguing that it's as crucial as accounting and customer service departments. He also touched on the significance of leadership in cybersecurity, stating that it's a skill that can be learned and that he, as an accountant, had successfully transitioned into the tech space due to his curiosity and leadership ability. Darren agreed with Michael's points, asserting that effective leadership is essential for the proper use and management of cybersecurity and data privacy within an organization. Leadership Engagement in IT Security Challenges darrengallop discussed the challenges IT security teams face in organizations where leadership is not engaged or committed to ensuring security. He noted that many organizations prioritize sales and fiscal responsibilities over security, leading to a reactive approach dubbed "security theater." Darren emphasized the need for leadership to prioritize security and recognize the evolving threat landscape, including the increasing profitability of cybercrime. Michael concurred, pointing out the lower overheads and ease of recruitment in cybercrime, compared to traditional criminal activities like drug cartels. Attracting Younger Generations to Computer Activities Michael and Darren discussed the attraction of computer-based activities for younger generations, likening it to a game or a puzzle that they find engaging and challenging. Michael suggested that this behavior could lead to criminal activities like hacking, especially for those in difficult economic situations. However, he emphasized the possibility of separating the criminal aspect from these activities and using their skills for legitimate purposes, setting them up for future success. Darren agreed with Michael's points. Organized Crime and Human Trafficking Discussion Michael and Darren discussed the prevalence of certain criminal activities within their borders and worldwide. Darren elaborated on the operations of organized criminal groups, mentioning cases in poor countries where people are exploited and demonized as targets. He also introduced the concept of human trafficking for hacking camps, where individuals are forced to conduct social engineering scams. Darren estimated that over 200,000 people are in captivity conducting these types of operations, making it difficult for law enforcement to have a meaningful impact on stopping and catching the perpetrators. AI Fraud and Preventive Measures Michael discussed the potential dangers of AI technology being used for fraudulent activities, such as scam phone calls using cloned voices. He suggested the use of code words and education as preventive measures. darrengallop agreed, emphasizing the importance of educating individuals at all levels to identify and prevent such criminal activities. He also highlighted the potential futility of relying solely on law enforcement to combat this issue, given the vast scope and complexity of the problem. Identity Theft and Financial Vulnerability Discussion darrengallop and Michael discussed the potential risks of identity theft and financial loss in today's world. Darren emphasized the importance of understanding the various factors contributing to vulnerability, such as owning property or having good credit, and noted how these factors could be used against individuals. Michael shared his experience managing his mother's estate and highlighted the need to freeze credit applications for the deceased. Both acknowledged the growing use of AI and other tools to automate finding weaknesses and vulnerabilities and how criminals could exploit this. They also discussed the possibility of identity theft through obituaries and the physical theft of mail. Data Theft, Hacking, and Customer Expectations Michael and Darren discussed the creative and often criminal activities surrounding data theft and hacking. They highlighted the need for organizations to monitor their systems and data closely and emphasized the importance of protecting sensitive information. Darren noted customers' increasing awareness and expectation regarding privacy and security, with many technology providers now implementing these concepts by default. However, he also pointed out the ongoing risks posed by social engineering and criminal activities, which have been refined over time. Both agreed on the need for these issues to be part of an organization's DNA, not an add-on, to prevent future breaches. Cybersecurity, Global Impact, and Resources darrengallop and Michael discussed the changing global landscape and its impact on businesses, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity and data protection. Darren introduced his website, carbidesecure.com, as a resource for companies seeking cybersecurity implementation and maintenance assistance.

Darren Gallop is the founder and CEO of Carbide and joins the show to share his amazing backstory including his journey from a university dropout to creating a record company to becoming a serial SaaS founder! Darren also talks to Ryan about his opinion of AI, cyber security in business and shares the single biggest challenge Carbide is facing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Carbide's primary go-to-market strategy is traditional sales via both outbound leads and inbound content leads such as creating valuable SEO enriched content and appearing on podcasts. All the new privacy and specific regulations have created a complex world, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. Carbide offers a solution to businesses, figuring out exactly what they need to do to comply and helping them do it too. After creating a music SaaS company, Darren began to discover what a pain point complex security measures and compliance were for clients and businesses alike. This is what started him on the journey to creating Carbide. AI will mean that many companies will cease to exist, especially if they ignore it. If you aren't doubling down on how to leverage AI in your business then you will struggle, particularly if you are an agency or service-based model. You can't be everything in a business, not if you want to scale and be successful. You need to bring in people who are better than you at the things you aren't good at. Many companies still have the incorrect perspective on security, they see it as administrative red tape have to get through. Moving upmarket has allowed Carbide to work with companies that generally have a good perspective on security and realize its importance for a modern company. BEST MOMENTS “We really dialed in on being highly effective in a small market” “I think we'll see layers of regulation popping up quickly {with AI]” “A lot of companies still don't think about security for the purpose of security” Do You Want The Closing Secrets That Helped Close Over $125 Million in New Business for Free?"  Grab them HERE: https://www.whalesellingsystem.com/closingsecrets Ryan Staley Founder and CEO Whale Boss 312-848-7443 ryan@whalesellingsystem.com www.ryanstaley.io  EPISODE RESOURCES ABOUT THE SHOW How do you grow like a VC-backed company without taking on investors?
