ICE Kicks Puppies. DHS Black Site Prisons. JD Vance is Garbage. A New Boat Strike. 17.5 Veteran Suicides Per Day. Super Bowl Picks and Bets, Ice Fishing, Chloe Kim Rocks Olympics. Trump is all gas, no brakes on this Super Bowl Friday—from posting a racist video from the White House depicting the Obama's as apes and escalating his war on the press, to unleashing ICE's culture of cruelty with gassed protesters, kicked‑in doors, kicked puppies and plans for giant warehouse‑style detention centers that could function as domestic black sites. In this all‑new episode of Independent Americans, Paul Rieckhoff welcomes back the iconic Rachel Maddow for a sharp, extended, urgent and surprisingly hopeful breakdown of what she calls a “mad king” moment—and why the real work now is taking away Trump's tools of power, from the Justice Department and ICE to the Pentagon and the Insurrection Act. Rachel rarely does podcasts, but she does this one hosted by her old friend. They chop it up on how authoritarians depend on institutional cowardice and public exhaustion, and why disciplined, non‑violent, mass resistance and strategic shaming still work—even against a president who seems beyond embarrassment. They highlight ICE's evolving archipelago of dark sites, Congress finally “getting up on its hind legs” with a “don't obey illegal orders” push, and the catastrophic failure of imagination that could come if Americans don't prepare now for an Insurrection Act deployment to crush future protests. It's not all darkness: Rachel gets personal and takes us to her ice‑fishing happy place in Western Massachusetts and explains why chasing pike through thigh‑deep snow is her metaphor for stubborn joy and resistance, while Paul salutes Chloe Kim's Olympic patriotism and life with a Jets‑fan kid. They close with a Super Bowl Football Friday segment—debating Patriots–Seahawks, Drake May's jitters and Sam Darnold's late bloom—and a cross‑jersey bet that will leave either Paul in Pats gear or Rachel in Seahawks colors. It's a fierce and fun way to end a crazy week and prep properly for the Super Bowl. -WATCH video of this episode on YouTube now. -Listen to Burn Order, Rachel's latest amazing podcast. -Be sure to watch the documentary Rachel referenced as Something Good: Field Generals: History of the Black Quarterback. -Check this out. Rachel Maddow looks at the latest headlines showing Donald Trump backpedaling in the face of protests and plummeting poll numbers, taking a shocking loss in a special election, losing court cases, and watching resignations in protest deplete his Justice Department. The pushback against Donald Trump is happening everywhere he turns and grows ever more effective the more Trump wobbles and weakens.Rachel Maddow looks at how communities around the country are finding ways to prevent Donald Trump from establishing immigration prison camps where they live. From pressuring real estate firms, to speaking out at town council hearings to revoking permits, Kristi Noem's Department of Homeland Security is having a hard time fulfilling Trump's vision of a nationwide system of "processing facilities" to house tens of thousands of immigrants.Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri, talks with Rachel Maddow about his city's effort to block the Department of Homeland Security from opening an ICE immigration prison in his community.Donald Trump appears to have overreached in his effort to control the information presented to Americans by arresting journalists. Georgia Fort, an award-winning independent journalist arrested while reporting on a protest at a church in Minnesota, talks with Rachel Maddow about the ordeal of being arrested at home by federal agents, and Donald Trump's efforts to bully, intimidate, and criminalize journalists in an effort to control what Americans are allowed to know. 2 Agents Who Shot VA Nurse Man Placed on Leave. Freedom Caucus Backs Trump Invoking Insurrection Act. ICE is Drive-By Macing People. 2M Casualties in Ukraine. Belichick Snubbed by HOF. Wemby Speaks Out. On a freezing January day in New York City, host Paul Rieckhoff is back solo at the mic to get you ready for the next storm—literal and political. From ICE raids in Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Portland, to the assault on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and the still-unfolding fallout from the killing of VA nurse Alex Pretti, Paul connects the dots on America's rapidly escalating crisis of political violence and unaccountable federal power. He breaks down the latest developments in the Minneapolis shooting, why the agents who killed Pretti still haven't been publicly identified, and why he believes ICE has become a runaway, unconstitutional menace that must be defunded and disbanded. Paul also digs into the House Freedom Caucus' shocking public support for Trump invoking the Insurrection Act, the 11th Airborne still on quiet standby for Minneapolis, and what that all means for democracy, dissent, and the 2026 landscape. He zooms out to the global picture—from the staggering casualty toll in Ukraine to the brutal crackdown on protesters in Iran and Trump's saber-rattling toward Cuba—while sending a clear message to America's allies that Trump does not speak for most Americans or most veterans. Paul also previews an exclusive upcoming conversation with former Minnesota Governor and Navy SEAL Jesse Ventura, teases a special Football Friday with Rachel Maddow, and even weighs in on why Bill Belichick being denied first-ballot Hall of Fame status is its own kind of outrage Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. Donald Trump's anti-immigrant mission was already damaging his standing with the portion of Americans who didn't already dislike him, but the escalating violence and brutality and shocking on-camera killings have seen his opposition balloon from Americans protesting to a large swath of his own party, business leaders, clergy and Congress. Rachel Maddow outlines how the forces of democracy are imposing themselves on Trump.Rachel Maddow points out the consistent, unrelenting, stalwart, peaceful opposition of the people of Minnesota to Donald Trump's brutal anti-immigrant tactics, flexing every democratic muscle, is steadily defeating Trump. The people of Minneapolis are showing that the way to save democracy is by democratic means, including peaceful protest.Rachel Maddow reports on the expanding list of communities that are refusing the admit the Department of Homeland Security to install an immigration prison or processing facility in their area. Even across differences of politics and demographics, no one wants to be host to an immigration prison. Want more of Rachel? Unleashed: The Political News Hour with Chris Cordani – The Left relies heavily on influencers — people who tell their followers what to think and how to feel each day. Rachel Maddow shares recent examples of prominent members of the clergy speaking out against Donald Trump's abuse anti-immigrant tactics and his belligerent foreign policy, and talks with Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, about defending immigrant members of his community and Donald Trump's dismantling of the moral role the U.S. plays in the world.Rachel Maddow reports on a growing number of towns and communities that are speaking out and standing up to Department of Homeland Security plans to open ICE detention and processing facilities to take in immigrants being arrested in federal raids. The rejection of ICE facilities fits into a bigger picture of pressure being put on companies and organizations that have become tacit ICE resources, from Avelo Airlines conducting deportation flights, to Home Depot allowing arrests of day laborers in their parking lots.Rachel Maddow shares photos of a giant replica of the naked woman birthday doodle that appears to have been from Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein on his 50th birthday. While Donald Trump has made clear how he intends to wield his power and retain his power, the most pressing question for Americans is how his opponents intend to stop him. Jon Ralston, founder and CEO of the Nevada Independent, and author of the newly published "The Game Changer: How Harry Reid remade the rules and showed Democrats how to fight," talks with Rachel Maddow about how the Democrats' best political tactician and savviest fighter in living memory would have handled stopping Trump and retaking power before it's too late. Rachel Maddow rounds up a litany of recent court losses Donald Trump has suffered, as even some Republicans in Congress are agreeing to block or otherwise mitigate the damage Trump's policies are inflicting on their constituents, all while Americans rally in protest of abuses and outright crimes committed by Trump's ICE agents.Rachel Maddow reviews recent examples of ICE agents overstepping their legal authority and making a chaotic mess of the job they're meant to be doing, all of which paints them not as actual professional immigration enforcement, but as Trump's untrained secret police force dressed up in military gear.ICE agents dressed in paramilitary costume and terrorizing communities with heavy-handed tactics appear to have thought their abuses would earn them respect and obedience. On the contrary, Americans are only becoming more agitated and inclined to resist ICE's overstepping. Amanda Otero, co-executive director of Take Action Minnesota, talks with Rachel Maddow about organizing anti-ICE protests and other activism as Donald Trump surges troops of border patrol agents into her town. Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff returns with an all-new bonus pod, sharing his urgent conversation with longtime friend Rachel Maddow from MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show. Rachel takes listeners into the “way, way back machine” to Paul's early days in politics and media, his time in Iraq, and why the unfolding crisis in Venezuela feels like Iraq all over again—only worse. Together they break down how Venezuela became a new front in Trump's plans, why it matters to every American, and what it reveals about the future of U.S. power, global democracy, and the 2026 landscape. They also look back on Rachel's earlier Independent Americans appearances, their legendary on-air Eli Manning jersey bet, and what keeps her in the fight as one of the country's most trusted and relentless truth-tellers. Even if you don't share her politics, Paul makes the case for respecting her intellect, fortitude, and patriotism—and why her voice still matters so much right now. Rachel Maddow runs through the litany of excuses and justifications the Trump administration has presented to explain the military invasion of Venezuela, and points out that none of what has been floated holds up under scrutiny. Every principle the Trump administration claims to be defending comes with examples of the administration not caring at all about that principle. Even the popular idea that it was all for oil doesn't really make sense upon closer examination. But there is one reason that is consistent with Trump's behavior through the first year of his second term in office.Pete Hegseth, former cable news weekend host and Donald Trump secretary of defense, is moving to demote Senator Mark Kelly and also cut his military retirement pay because Kelly reminded members of the military of their duty to refuse to obey unlawful orders. Senator Kelly talked with Rachel Maddow about why that particular message bothered Donald Trump so much that he's still trying to punch Kelly for saying it out loud in public.Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America talks with Rachel Maddow about how Donald Trump is reshaping the role of the U.S. military to suit his interests and ego. Rachel Maddow shares a look at how outrage over government corruption in Bulgaria prompted massive protests and eventually the resignation of the prime minister and his government. And in the United States, for all of Donald Trump's unpopular policies being protested across the country, the self-dealing and corruption that has become his administration's hallmark may ultimately be what leads to Trump's downfall. Julie K. Brown, investigative reporter for the Miami Herald who first exposed the scandal of how the Jeffrey Epstein case was handed, talks with Rachel Maddow about feedback she is receiving from survivors of Epstein's abuse about finding their own names in released documents despite heavy redactions that appear to make a greater priority of protecting the identities and information of people involved with Epstein than to protect his victims as the law instructs.Rep. Jamie Raskin joins to discuss how an ownership change and recent editorial decisions by CBS News is raising concerns that Donald Trump and the billionaires who support him are making progress on building state media. Rachel Maddow reviews how poorly Donald Trump's policies are being received by the American public as Trump continues to appoint laughably unqualified sycophants to top agency roles, and leadership failures mount. As a result, not only are Trump's poll numbers tanking, but even Republican politicians are recognizing that it's not in their interest to tie their fates to Trump's sinking ship.As Donald Trump fills the leadership roles of the U.S. public health system with quacks and kooks, sane states are taking it upon themselves to employ actual experts with real public health administration experience to make sure the public has credible guidance even if that guidance is not coming from the federal government. Dr. Debra Houry, former CDC official and new senior medical adviser to the California Department of Health, talks with Rachel Maddow about this new shift in public health authority as Donald Trump and his clown show are simply ignored. And the FBI is suffering a similar fate, with Trump lackeys in leadership driving out the agency's qualified staff and leaving behind only incompetent Trump loyalists to run the sadly weakened organization. Rachel Maddow is an author, podcast host and producer, documentary producer, and, of course, the anchor of her eponymous show on MS NOW. Her newest podcast, "Rachel Maddow Presents: Burn Order," unravels how the incarceration of more than 100,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants during WWII was planned and carried out. Shockingly, the full story behind one of the 20th century's worst American human-rights abuses might never have come to light if not for the relentless work of a hobbyist researcher — who had been incarcerated herself. Kara and Rachel dig into the story and explore the parallels to President Trump's mass-deportation policies. They also discuss the recent boat strikes on alleged drug traffickers, the escalating drama around the competing bids for Warner Bros. Discovery and what it signals for the future of the news business, and MSNBC's evolution into MS NOW. Please note: This episode was taped on Tuesday, before President Trump said it was “imperative that CNN be sold." Questions? Comments? Rachel Maddow looks at a variety of legal tactics and pressure campaigns that are having success against the Trump administration's overreach in immigration enforcement and the Justice Department's vendetta prosecutions. Where people push back, Trump loses, or sometimes doesn't even try to fight, and the more Americans learn that lesson, the stronger the opposition Trump faces.Rachel Maddow explains that as Donald Trump's health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gives increasing credence and authority to crackpots, the authority and reputation of American medical expertise is suffering such extreme degradation that science-minded state officials are establishing new fact-based health alliances to advise the public on matters like vaccinations. Former CDC chief Dr. Richard Besser joins to discuss the crisis at the CDC under Trump and Kennedy."Iceblock" app developer Joshua Aaron joins to discuss his lawsuit to unblock his app, a community-based ICE raid tracker, from Apple's app store. Rachel Maddow relays the details of a new Washington Post report that Donald Trump's secretary of defense, former weekend cable news host Pete Hegseth, gave orders to kill everyone on board a boat he accused of running drugs to the United States, which meant finishing off the survivors of an initial strike that destroyed the boat — the literal textbook definition of an illegal order. Rep. Adam Smith, ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee joins to discuss a new, bipartisan push to investigate Hegseth's orders.Rachel Maddow talks with Nadya Tolokonnikova, founding member of Russian dissident activism group Pussy Riot, about what it means that the Putin administration has declared her a member of an "extremist" organization, and the parallels to Donald Trump using a similar tactic to give himself the tools for targeting people he doesn't like.
