It's Talk Like A Pirate Day and that makes it the perfect time to invite pirate historians Jamie Goodall and Rebecca Simon to talk about pirate mythology, superstitions at sea, and our favorite books and movies about swashbucklers.About our guests:Jamie Goodall is  a historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, D.C.  She also teaches part-time at Southern New Hampshire University in their College of Online & Continuing Education. She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2020), National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy (Washington, D.C.: National Geographic, 2021), Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2022), and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2023).Rebecca Simon is a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. She earned her PhD from King's College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. She uses the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

In The Pirate's Code: Laws and Life Aboard Ship (Reaktion, 2023), Dr. Rebecca Simon presents a rollicking account of pirates' codes, the strict rules essential for survival at sea. Pirates have long captured the imagination with images of cutlass-wielding swashbucklers, eye patches and buried treasure. But what was life really like on a pirate ship? Piracy was a risky, sometimes deadly occupation, and strict orders were essential for everyone's survival. These ‘Laws' were sets of rules that determined everything from how much each pirate earned from their plunder to compensation for injuries, punishments and even the entertainment allowed on ships. These rules became known as the ‘Pirates' Code', which all pirates had to publicly swear by. Using primary sources such as eyewitness accounts, trial proceedings and maritime logs, this book explains how these codes were the key to pirates' success in battle, both on sea and on land. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Rebecca Simon, PhD, teaches at Oak Grove School and is the author of two popular books on the public's fascination with pirates. The first is "Why We Love Pirates: The Hunt for Captain Kidd and How it Changed Piracy Forever," and the second, just released this summer, is "The Pirate's Code: Life and Laws Aboard Ship." She writes both for general audiences and as an academic, specializing in maritime law and how it has evolved and adapted, especially through the tumultuous period in the late 1600s and early 1700s, when popular conceptions of pirates, as seen in "Pirates of the Caribbean" were created. We talk about the often-surprisingly egalitarian codes and laws under which pirates governed themselves, the differences between the reality and fantasy, the spark that pirates provided to oppressed people everywhere, including the American colonies, and much more. So strap on your flintlock pistol and cutlass and come onboard. We did not talk about Shohei Ohtani's dream team, crayon color schemes, or competitive chess. Today we set sail with an old friend of the pod who originally joined us back in 2019 to teach us all about the queer history of pirates, Dr. Rebecca Simon. In our previous conversatio, we covered a more general history of pirates and the queerness many male pirates expressed through clothing and sxuality–like the gentleman pirate Captian Stede Bonnet, and the infamous Black Beard. We also discussed her book Why We Love Pirates: The Hunt for Captain Kid and How He Changed Piracy Forever. During our 2019 discussion, Rebecca also briefly touched on two notable female pirates who dressed like men in battle, subverted they're femininity into a weapon, and may have even been Lesbian Lovers. These two badass pirates were Anne Bonny and Mary Reed, and they left quite an impression on me and our audience back in 2019. So when I heard that Rebecca had recently written the first full length book on the history of Anne and Mary, I had to have her back on the pod to share her findings, and give Anne, Mary, and all women pirates the platform they deserve. In today's four part episode, we will learn about how Anne Bonny and Mary Reed became pirates, how their relationship unfolded, the research that went into writing Pirate Queens, and Rebecca's thoughts on depictions of pirates in the media today. So yee scallywags, come aboard the PRIDE ship, and join us as we uncover the treasures of Anne and Mary's buried history. Your host is Levi Chambers, founder of Rainbo Media Co. Dr Rebecca Simon's research and writing charts the rise and fall of pirates, from ancient times to a "golden era" spanning the 16th and 17th centuries, which, together with Treasure Island spawned a romantic Captain Jack Sparrow-eque image. Rebecca' s new book Pirate Queens: The Lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read is a history of female piracy in the Caribbean and the Atlantic. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were infamous pirates who swore and fought with pistols and cutlasses at a time when few women rose above servitude and wifely duties. They weren't alone. Further afield, in the South China Sea, female pirate leader Ching Shih presided over a fleet of some 80,000 men. By contrast, Captain Blackbeard had a crew of three hundred. Both he and other notorious pirates make cameo appearances here. Dr Simon teaches history at Santa Monica College, and joins Kathryn from LA.

When we were last together, we spoke of DB Cooper, and the only unsolved case of air piracy in US history. Tonight, we take piracy to a whole new level.  In the late 1600's, in just a two year period, a single man would lead a mutiny aboard a ship named Charles the second, become the captain elect of that ship, and go on to have the most successful pirate career of anyone that ever lived. Like Cooper, he has no beginning. In fact, modern day scholars can't even agree on when he was born.  After the most successful raid of his short career, this man would vanish into thin air, leading to the first worldwide manhunt and a trial that would have an absolutely shocking ending. You really gotta hand it to those pirates boy. They don't stand on ceremony, especially Henry Every. No this guy disappears into the vast oceans with a treasure that today could be worth north of hundreds of millions of dollars.  Legend says that Every became so successful that he lived out his days in a legendary pirate city on Madagascar where the streets were paved in gold, and the riches were so vast, he need never be concerned with money again.  Others, tell a different story.  One thing's for certain. No one ever found him. Maybe more importantly, no one ever found the treasure.  The end of season 2 is upon us.  Finally, it's time to set sail. This is Vanished: Henry Every. As an elder millennial, TikTok as a platform scares and upsets me. I'm not really sure how to use it to grow my audience (if it even can) and I'm worried it's just going to be a huge time suck. But according to Rebecca Simon, if your business isn't on Tiktok, it's a huge missed opportunity. SO naturally, I asked her how a small business owner can make the most of the platform; Rebecca offered some of the best advice I've heard for any social network! So if you're wondering how you can grow your audience through TikTok, this episode is for you. Plus, in Build Something More, I ask Rebecca how some of my favorite Tiktoks were made. Top Takeaways It's important to have the right SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) in place with VAs, employees, or even just yourself. The direction all social media is moving in is video. Instagram rebranded as a "video" platform, and TikTok is leading the charge. That's why it's so important to be there. The biggest benefit is TikTok is pushing you to new people. She shifted from working as a VA, to putting her HR skills to even better use as an OBM, to now coaching other virtual service providers to build their own thriving online businesses. She has built a community of over 22,000 entrepreneurs, providing a safe space for her audience to feel supported, educated, and inspired.  When she's not working, Becca loves to travel with her fiancé, Nigel (the sunnier and more tropical the location, the better!). How do pirates know they're pirates? They think … therefore they ARRR. Sorry for that terrible joke. But I want us all to get into the space of pirates. The open sea, violence, stealing, run-ins with the law, and above all, freedom — from the social burdens of the Early Modern Era and — freedom to love who they loved. The pirates we'll meet today were way more exciting than eye patches and wooden legs. Get ready for a crash course on the Golden Age of piracy -- the time of Blackbeard and the real Pirates of the Caribbean.
