When to Ask for Help

When to Ask for HelpI share with you another client story from one of our group coaching calls in The Success Society, which is our higher-level coaching group where we talk about all things outside of the application. Now, I am a firm believer that you don't need to come with a “problem” or something to troubleshoot every single week in order to participate in and benefit from our coaching sessions. Like I say to our Apply Yourself community members, you don't need to wait until you experience a problem to reach out and ask for support. When it comes to our coaching, we take a holistic approach because you shouldn't actually have to ask for help. It should be a well-rounded process that you engage in fully, freely, and on your own terms.Holistic Coaching, Asking for Help, and Making Good Choices in your AdvancementChatting with this client brought up a really important question: When do we ask for help? Asking for help often requires a serious analysis of where we are, where we want to be, and the gap between them. Here are some key points from this episode:If you're feeling unsure of your next steps, it's important to take a step back and visualize where you want to be in a productive way. In order to reach your goals, your current self needs to make choices that can, in truth, be uncomfortable. These are often the choices you would make when you look back in hindsight. Imagine yourself 10, 20, 30 years into the future, or even 1 year in. What choices would you make today to get you where you want to be faster, without stress, with more joy, support, encouragement, and community, and in a healthier and sustainable way?  There doesn't always have to be a problem. It's important to learn how to ask for help and when to ask for help. And in order to ask for the right kind of help, you need the right people to be on the other end, listening to and supporting you.At Apply Yourself, we provide coaching for applications, for test prep, and for life in general, and we have programs that focus on each of those areas. Want help on applications? We have Mastering Academic Applications. Want to excel in your MCAT and LSAT test prep? We have Mastering Test Prep. Need support in different areas of your life? We have The Success Society. And for all of the above, we always offer 1:1 VIP time to our clients. Follow and subscribe to never miss an episode! Connect with Adrienne!Want to connect with us at Apply Yourself: The Advancement Spot and continue this discussion on asking for help? Why You Need Independence for Growth

Why You Need Independence for Growth This week, I bring you into a conversation that I had with one of my amazing clients in the Success Society, which was about the need for independence to grow. This amazing member was experiencing a few circumstances happening at home that were preventing her from going back to school and moving back to campus on time. Not only was she delayed in moving, she was also feeling alone and isolated while starting these new processes at the beginning of her semester because her partner was doing his co-op in a different city. Ultimately, after working through these feelings of nervousness and stress together, this member made some important realizations about the importance of guilt-free independence in order to grow and flourish while pursuing one's own advancement - listen to this episode to learn more! Insights on Growing Independently, Without Guilt or Shame So many of us rely on our relationships with people for comfort, and this is completely natural. But we cannot rely on the presence of another person so heavily that we revolve our entire schedules, strategies, and social time around what we think is convenient for the other person. There are ways that we can grow independently while also maintaining our cherished relationships with others. Here are some key takeaways from this episode: When we are implementing new skills and strategies to improve our productivity, grades, study habits, and further our advancement in general, we need to put ourselves first when it comes to making decisions that help us pursue our next best steps. Doing things independently and when you want to does not make you selfish. Instead, this makes you appropriately focused on your own growth and success. Just because you and another person, whether it be your partner, friend, or family member, are not together doesn't mean you're growing apart. It means that you might be growing together in parallel, with the appropriate independence that you need in order to make decisions for yourself, unencumbered by the decisions or expectations of others.  Remember, if they are the right person or people, they will support you in your independent growth and grow alongside you.Follow and subscribe to never miss an episode! Connect with Adrienne!Want to connect with us at Apply Yourself: The Advancement Spot and continue this conversation on growing independently? Are Law School and Other Chat Forums Useful? We're doing something different this episode - I share a segment from one of our group coaching calls in The Success Society, our higher-level coaching community where we discuss all things outside of the application. This is my response to a discussion about law school forums and how this brought up feelings of insecurity for one of our members about their applications.  We have to be mindful when engaging with public, anonymous forums - they often promote a competition-based, scarcity mindset and falling down the rabbit hole can hinder our advancement and success. The Importance of Focusing On You, Not "the Competition"I unpack law school forums and the ways they actually hinder our advancement based on my experience as a student who has gone through these processes, a professor for over a decade, and an admissions committee member at all levels. Here are some key takeaways: There's more to life than the application - it's about what we do to manage stress and pressure that lead us to advancement. These forums are not legitimate sources of information for admissions committees for three reasons: 1- People on forums are anonymous and don't always tell the truth; they may be spreading misinformation to make others feel insecure. 2 - There's no fact checking on these forums and no way to ensure the accuracy of information. 3 - Forums are part of a much bigger issue - they promote competition, substance use, and insecurity among students and professionals.Don't feed into the trap of online forums to seek external validation or support. Instead, focus on you, and spend your time and energy on the things and people that matter to you. Be careful of the people you surround yourself with. Don't engage in competitive behaviour because it's the “cool” thing to do.People are getting in regardless of scores, grades, or experiences; it's about the written application materials and showcasing yourself. I'm so happy to be back this week and I'm so grateful that you're taking time out of your busy day to spend some here with me! Today, I want to talk about something that I've received so many questions about - How do we balance application writing with school work, jobs, family commitments, and our other responsibilities? Many of our Apply Yourself clients and community members have application deadlines coming up, so I want to provide some insights and strategies that were discussed with the Mastering Academic Applications: From Scratch to Submission graduates. Before that, here's some exciting news: many of our MAA graduates are now community members in The Success Society, Apply Yourself's higher-level coaching group! These 8 strategies, which arose from our productive and fruitful weekly group coaching calls in MAA and TSS, have been really helpful for our community members as they transition back into the Fall semester, and I hope these help you as well! Join us this episode as we discuss the following strategies: First, we need to perceive our school work as productive and constructive to our success and to the life we want to build for ourselves. It's about the choices we're making and the skills, habits, and discipline we're developing that allow us to excel.Second, if you are working on applications for graduate or professional schools, or for jobs and careers, we need to reframe the way that we think about and develop them. Applications don't have to be a drag and we don't have to suffer through them! At Apply Yourself, we actually work together so we enjoy the process of application development and we get so much more out of it than just the application.   Third, don't be afraid to contact your professors at the start of the semester. As a professor, I always give my students the opportunity to introduce themselves and let me learn more about them, whether it be through email or in person.Fourth, aim to stay on top of your coursework and readings, but do it in a way that works best for you, not others. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing different things for different classes and don't be afraid to change strategies. (Tip: The way the professor or instructor taught was a huge determinant for if I chose to do my readings either before or after class!) We are a non-competition based community here at Apply Yourself, and we believe that we shouldn't compare ourselves to other people or focus on the competition. We need to focus on ourselves in order to grow, succeed, build a positive mindset, and achieve advancement. Fifth, the root cause of procrastination is often anxiety about the future or the unknown. Set yourself up in a way that makes it so that this feeling of anxiety does not hinder you. Anxiety is a completely natural feeling that allows us to stop and evaluate our choices, but we should strategize around it, take small steps, and not let it stop us from moving forward.  Sixth, your environment matters! Where you work, study, read, and think matters. You should feel safe and be able to think freely and productively in your workspace. You can always relocate to where you are most productive (for me, it was the library). Seventh, be mindful of your technology and app usage. Apps are designed to keep you using them and they benefit from this. We need to understand that we don't use theIn just 12 weeks, with this course and my live group coaching, you'll have all of the tools to develop the skills that you need to create, develop, and complete your professional, polished applications to graduate and professional schools. Enrollment is now OPEN for a program start date of July 11, 2022. Wedding photographers and professional that want to explode their business with Tiktok, you are going to love this episode. She inspired me to start my own Tiktok Becca believes that The freedom lifestyle you've been dreaming of is closer than you think. Bio Hey, I'm Rebecca Simon, founder of The Success Society. If you're questioning this “freedom lifestyle” I completely get it — I used to question it myself. I didn't know if I could create a business that replaced my corporate income and allowed me to drink mimosas at my fav Huntington Beach restaurant on a Tuesday, but it does! And to top it off, I've been able to help hundreds — yep, hundreds — of women build, launch, and scale their own online service-based businesses and there's no reason you shouldn't be next. Oh, and about that corporate salary? I've more than doubled it and I can show you how to too. All you need is a work ethic and the drive to make it happen, that's all I had. I didn't know much other than I was certain I wanted to be my own boss, put my Disneyland annual park pass to use during the week, and not be tied to my computer 40+ hours a week. But I was unaware of how I could tie my HR experience into running a business. I had a B.A. in Human Development, experience working with multi- million dollar companies, and climbing the corporate ladder — and didn't have any knowledge related to running a business… Until I discovered I could put this natural leadership to use as a virtual assistant (VA). Quickly, I learned that I had valuable skills that other business owners needed — and I can guarantee you do too. I examined what my skills were, how I could make them marketable, and that's when my VA business was born in December of 2019. Through strategic shifts in my business, I now coach virtual service providers through one-on-one and group programs to build their own thriving business. I've built a community of over 32,000 entrepreneurs, providing a safe space for my audience to feel educated, supported, and inspired. www.workwithbecca.com TikTok: VirtualAssistantCoach https://www.instagram.com/workwithbecca/ Connect with Carissa Tiktok: weddingphotographycoach Coaching IG: @carissawoo Photography IG: @carissawoophotography Download a free guide on how to become a lead generating machine HERE Watch my free 20 lead generation masterclass https://carissa-woo.mykajabi.com/registration-page... She has built a community of over 22,000 entrepreneurs, providing a safe space for her audience to feel supported, educated, and inspired.  When she's not working, Becca loves to travel with her fiancé, Nigel (the sunnier and more tropical the location, the better!).
