This is the second part of my two-part conversation with Jerome Hill, a DJ and producer renowned for his exceptional skills behind the turntables. Since his first gig in 1990, Jerome has been mixing and scratching a wide variety of sounds, always bringing a selection guaranteed to energize any party. In this episode, we discuss several key topics, including:Club UK: A nightclub in Wandsworth, London, active in the early to mid-1990s, where Jerome was introduced to the harder sounds of techno through DJs like Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, and Carl Cox.Jerome's early days as a DJ at squat parties in the 1990s, performing for sound systems such as Jiba and Chiba City.Dragon Disc, a record shop in Camden, where Jerome worked as manager and buyer. The so-called "wonky techno" sound, which was showcased both in the shop and at parties like Ugly Funk.Collaborating with Rob Stowe as Groove Asylum, creating music and performing live sets at techno parties.Launching a diverse range of record labels spanning multiple genres, including:Don't for unconventional party techno.Super Rhythm Trax for acid, bleeps, and house grooves.Hornsey Hardcore for rave-infused beats.Fat Hop for cut-up, hip-hop-inspired mash-ups.We also touch on Jerome's philosophy of championing music that some DJs might shy away from. Throughout the conversation, Jerome reflects on his journey in the music scene, from the early rave days to his current roles as a label owner and DJ.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. We've known her forever, but have never heard her own story on how she came to be Lucy's Record Shops' heart and soul. In this episode we look at the disappearance of record shops in the UK in the late 2000s, followed by a sharp resurgence that continues into the 2020s. While it seemed record shops were going the way of the 8-track and the cassette, the industry did a complete 180 and did the unthinkable - and boutique record stores started popping up again all over the UK. To take us through the downs and ups, Pip Piper and Graham Jones join us from Dawlish, England. During his career as a sales-rep, Graham visited more record shops than any other human. His 2008 book ‘Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops' documents the decline of the record shop, while his 2018 book ‘The Vinyl Revival and the Shops that Made it Happen' documents the subsequent rise. Both books were made into films of the same name by Pip Piper. Outside of the UK you can download ebook versions of Last Shop Standing, Strange Requests and Comic Tales From Record Shops and The Vinyl Revival and The Shops That Made it Happen from Amazon Kindle. In May 2014, we welcomed Graham Jones – a founder of Proper Music and author of ‘Last Shop Standing’ and ‘Strange Requests and Comic Tales from Record Shops’. Born in Liverpool, Graham managed local band The Cherry Boys and ran his own market stall, selling fruit bowls made from Beatles LPs melted into shape under a grill. He then travelled the country selling records, tapes and CDs to independent record shops. ‘Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops?’ tells how the UK went from having over 2000 independent record shops in the 1980s to just 269 by 2009. Witnessing this decline from his vantage point as a record company salesman, the book became a celebration of the survivors: a David and Goliath tale of shops managing to keep going despite the immense pressure from downloading and supermarkets. Recorded and edited by Simon Galloway.

Plus: We spank ourselves senseless with a tambourine for the 25th birthday edition of Suede’s debut, explore the lore of the Great British Record Shop, and find out how Craig broke his arm messing about with Björk. R.I.P. Record Store Day or can it be saved?Let me preface this post by stating that I LOVE Record Stores.  I WANT Record Stores to succeed.  I LOVE the spirit that Record Store Day originally championed.  I don't want Record Store Day to go away, but there are too many glaring issues that stores don't get to publicly mention and I've been asked to help be a voice for those that are afraid to speak up, for fear of retribution.     Ever since March 20th, when the official lists for Record Store Day have come out, you've seen some minor rumblings of a backlash towards Record Store Day.  It has started to gain traction, received national attention and was very upsetting to those behind Record Store Day.  But the problem is, if this stuff doesn't get discussed, how else can it get out?  Not everything can or should be discussed behind closed doors--sometimes transparency is needed. I made a post last year about some tweaks that were needed for Record Store Day here.  Because in talking to as many stores as I do, I could see this coming.  I was hoping that some of these issues would be fixed, but sadly we are now at the end of the road and two things are getting ready to happen: a) Record Store Day is going to kill itself due to abundance of product b) Record Store Day is going to be abandoned by the very stores/artists/labels it was setup to promote So what are some of the fundamental problems going on in the industry that will help kill Record Store Day:http://new-vinyl.blogspot.com/2014/04/rip-record-store-day-or-can-it-be-saved.html
