In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, Sasha and photographer, Lois Conner talk about the importance of being prepared for and understanding the history of a place before setting out to photograph while at the same time letting go of what you think you know. Lois talks about some of her most important teachers and mentors, from Helen Levitt to Richard Benson, and how they helped shape her process and practice. She was awarded a Bachelor in Fine Arts (photography) from the Pratt Institute and a Master's degree from the Yale School of Art. Conner has received numerous grants, exhibits widely, and features in many publications. She was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Award for Artists (2020) and the Rosenkranz Foundation Fellowship for Photography (2019). She is currently part of the inaugural exhibition at the renovated Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the traveling exhibition Civilization, The Way We Live Now at the National Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. She has also had many solo shows in Asia and United States. Her work has been featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography. Her recent books include: Lotus, Trees and the Jiangnan Landscape, Hangzhou, 2019; A Long View, Shanghai Center of Photography, 2018; Lotus Leaves, Wairarapa Academy, New Zealand, 2018. Survey books from 2019 include Civilization, The Way We Live Now by William Ewing and Keeper of the Hearth, Picturing Roland Barthes's Unseen Photograph by Odette England, both are catalogues for traveling exhibitions. Conner has been teaching photography for over thirty-five years, including over a decade at the Yale University School of Art. Other venues include Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Cooper Union, Bard College, Stanford University, the New School and the School of Visual Arts. Labor has changed. Its production. Its definition. Its control. But one thing that has not changed are the parameters within which labor has been defined, value extracted and dehumanized – mechanized – automated – artificially intelligeized. What does "labor" mean in a settler imperial world fortified by racial capitalist sociopolitical structures that maintain a social order that places the African/a worker, beyond the periphery of benefiting from their labor? What about decolonizing labor and labor movements? What about a world without work----What are the ideological frameworks that ‘labor' is using to attempt to construct the material realities of our current world? What does (or will) this world look like in two-years…and what are its implications for the African/a world? What are the implications for the Earth and now more than ever, the heavens—space? Questions around black labor, usually pivot on the role of black education. However, most explorations are neither critical nor intellectually honest. Today, Dr. Kamau Rashid joins us in conversation where we meditate on black labor and 'the white architects of black education'. Our thoughts are centered on William H. Watkins work, the White Architects of Black Education: Ideology and Power, 1865-1954. In the White Architects of Black Education, Watkins “explores the body of ideas that undergird social, economic, racial, and educational beliefs about Black education in the U.S.: therefore, it is an ideological study. His stated objective is to "investigate the ideological construction of colonial Black education by examining the views, politics, and practices of the white architects that funded, created, and refined it” [1-2]. Therefore, “colonial education in the South must never be confused with the educational agenda of blacks in the south. In fact, these agenda conflicted” [2]. The central question asks: How far have we moved away from these foundational ideas and their ideological grounding? Dr. Kamau Rashid is currently Professor and Founding Director of the Urban Education, Ed.D. program at Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Rashid earned his Ph.D. and BA from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Arts degree from Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Rashid work focuses on African American history and culture, particularly on the inter-generational dynamics of African/a social critique, which includes an exploration and theorizing of W.E.B. Du Bois as well as contemporary African-Centered scholars and critical race theorists. He is co-developing an oral history and archival project focused on African American social movements in the Chicago area from the 1960s to1980s with Dr. Richard Benson of Spelman College. And is currently working on Finding our way through the desert: Jacob H. Carruthers and the restoration of an African worldview as well as the critical theory of W.E.B. Du Bois: The Struggle for Humanity. He has published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and received various grant awards to support his work. Lastly, likely most importantly, Dr. Rashid is active in a number of community organizations in the Chicago-area including the Kemetic Institute of Chicago, a research and educational organization focused on mapping, exploring and applying the ancient and contemporary contributions of ancient Nile Valley civilizations. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the native/indigenous, African, and Afro-descended communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; Ghana; Ayiti; and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all people. We hear reactions from Dr. Laura Renée Chandler, Oglethorpe's first vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Dr. Richard Benson, an associate professor in the Department of Education at Spelman College.
Speciasl Guest: Dr. Richard Benson is Director of the Office of Global Health and Health Disparities (OGHHD) in the NINDS Division of Clinical Research. He is a leader in the fields of vascular neurology and health disparities research. His areas of research interest and expertise include: health disparities and health equity research, and minority, community, and global health. Dr. Benson has worked in the public and private sectors and is a volunteer with several professional organizations. He is a past president and current board member of the American Heart Association (AHA), Greater Washington Region (GWR). He was a member of the national AHA Stroke Council and is currently an American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Registries committee member. Dr. Benson received his B.S. in Chemistry from Fisk University, followed by an MD/PhD from Meharry Medical College in Neurophysiology (elected to AOA). Subsequently, he completed his neurology residency at the Harvard-Longwood neurology residency program in Boston, and a stroke fellowship at the Columbia University Neurological Institute in New York, while obtaining an M.S. in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health.

The notion, assumption, and/or idea that the various peoples who were enslaved during the periods and processes of the solidification of the racial global economy that claims our ancestors were deprived of culture, strips of all associations with historical and ancestral groundings is a product of centering European historicity as the dominant expression of social, historical, political and epistemic knowledge systems. This argument is rooted in the fact that one of the most vibrant places to find the most articulate expressions of African/a humanity is in the way we resist injustice—inequity—violence. The way we conceptualize and engage in struggle against systems of oppression, the foundation of which is an advanced understanding of the praxis of being human. See everything Sylvia Wynter. African/a struggles operate on multiple and simultaneous levels of human existence. It always was, always will be a struggle to realize a world beyond. The material and nonmaterial praxis to balance forces seen and unseen. The science of African/a fighting arts…a commitment, conscious or unconscious, to embody resistance. Of becoming rebel. Building on the work of Dr. Kamu Rashid, I assert that of becoming rebel can be understood in the Swahili tradition as, “Harakati za Waasi”, translated as “Movement of Rebels”. For Dr. Rashid, it represents the tradition of radical resistance that is embedded in the history of Capoeira and other African Diasporic combat arts. These arts were used in the people's resistance to state oppression throughout the Americas. Harakati za Waasi seeks to honor these traditions by seeking to engage in the rigorous study and practice of the theoretical and technical applications of African combat systems. Additionally, Dr. Rashid and the collective seek to broadly disseminate these arts within the African community for the sake facilitating cultural transformation. Today, embodied resistance: the science of African/a fighting arts with Kamau Rashid. Backyard Theology is a summer program at Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church dedicated to faith enrichment. It is designed to be "summer casual", beginning with parish provided BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers, and participants are requested to bring a side-dish or contribute a free will offering. BBQ is served from 6PM - 7PM, with the speaker beginning at 7:30 PM in the Parish Hall. The program runs consecutive Monday evenings in July. The entire 2018 schedule is available at this link. I finished 2017 by staying at the Historic Davenport Hotel in downtown Spokane, WA. During my stay, I was reminded why it is important to focus on what is uniquely you. When I sampled the soft peanut brittle a chef was making in the lobby of the hotel, it set me off thinking about why they do it. Why do they make the treat in the lobby and give it out to guests? The peanut brittle is not about selling more of the tasty treat. It is about adding something special to guest's stay at the hotel. Something special you can only find at the Historic Davenport. Richard Benson said, "Make only that to which you bring a unique quality and buy everything else around the corner." As you start the new year, think about what you can offer that is uniquely you.

As a young man Jon Goodman set out from the United States for Europe to learn photogravure printing. At the time of his journey in the mid-1970s the practice of making flat plate gravures had all but disappeared. After years of travel and trials in Europe and the United States, Goodman began printing work by some of the greats: Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Dorothea Lange and Paul Strand. I sat down with Goodman in his Northampton, Massachusetts studio to talk about his travels in Europe, working on photogravure with Richard Benson and working with Michael Hoffman at Aperture.

He uses the term "out of the blue" a lot, but not as an aeronautical term, more like what living a spontaneous life looks like. We caught up with Richard at a seminar he runs every January in Bend, Oregon. Following 18 years of running a successful and fulfilling practice as a Chiropractor in Bend, Richard Benson 'retired' at 44 to follow his passion of inspiring individuals and groups to cultivate their own balance and inner peace through experiential gatherings & play-shops. He founded and guides the experiential GOLDEN BRIDGE SEMINARS, focusing on opening the heart, releasing the past, and creating our future. There Is a Light that Never Goes Out tells the story of a Durham pit village from the 1950s to the present, and shows how its peoples’ memories, beliefs and ghosts still influence life there today. Author Richard Benson (The Valley, The Farm) and photographer Keith Pattison spent four months recording stories and conversations with people in Easington Colliery, focusing on the Handys, a well-known local family. In this piece he tells tales of tragedy and heroism, love and loss, and the fight to build a better world. Here, too, are everyday stories of a unique way of life; stories of children growing up in a tight-knit community, of tough men and of the invincible women who sustained the village in the hardest of times. Told largely in the family’s own voices, There is a Light is unflinchingly honest about life in these world-famous villages, which contributed not only the energy that built Britain, but also important ideas about how communities can work together. Looking at life there since the closure of the local collieries, it asks, what is left of the old history and its spirit, and how much of it influences the places, people and wider region?
