I start by talking about Nolan Arenado and why it seems like he is the RHH coming to Boston. I then discuss the wild NBA trade deadline.
Two Orioles have made changes and are having good early returns. Colton Cowser has started using a longer bat, and Zach Eflin's pitch mix has been adjusted, effectively dropping his 4s against RHH. Tune in as Eli reviews these changes in dpeth and looks at what the early returns have been. Twitter Threads YouTube Substack

Unbelievably, this is it! After four seasons of The “Race, Health & Happiness”Podcast, we are shutting off the lights, locking the door, and saying goodbye for the last time. We did our best to share knowledge, uplift people, and make “this racialized world” a little better. But all good things must come to an end, and we know in our souls that now is the time to take a break, and then dream it all up again with some new and exciting ventures.Of the countless reasons we have to be grateful, it's the many people who supported the work of "Race, Health & Happiness" that mean the most to us. This episode of RHH is our third of a 3-part series on South Africa. I speak with Quinton Redcliffe, a skilled facilitator, trainer, and educator from Cape Town, South Africa. He specializes in international education, intercultural communication and leadership training. He has dedicated his career to working to find common ground among diverse populations, from his days working to topple the apartheid regime in the South Africa of his youth, to helping people deal with and overcome the legacy of institutionalized racism in his country and all over the world. More recently Quinton has had the opportunity to expand his anti-racism work even further, following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police in the United States. From that tragedy the demand for racial reconciliation grew, and Quinton has worked hard to fill that gap through his work.In our conversation, Quinton talks about the explicit ways South Africa institutionalized racism. He highlights how apartheid dictated a person's fate from the cradle to the grave — where one was born, where they were allowed to live, and even where they were buried were all influenced by race with all of this exclusion being written into law. We also talk about the ways that the study of the system of apartheid can be used to learn how best to implement systems of resistance that include allyship, conflict resolution and knowledge exchange. Quinton's personal journey of resistance can help us to understand how to combat systems of oppression, both past and present - Dr. O.Access our Shownotes to uncover additional meaning!(https://bit.ly/rhhcarolinepeters6)Please support us on Patreon at http://www.Patreon.com/RaceHealthHappy[The “Race, Health & Happiness” podcast is produced with the support of Toronto Metropolitan University.]

This episode of RHH is our second of a three-part series on South Africa. I speak with Ms. Caroline Peters, a South African feminist and human rights defender and an award-winning activist against gender-based violence. Ms. Peters discusses her life and experiences living and working as a coloured woman in South Africa during the 90's. She tells me about the differences in discrimination between groups during apartheid, and her feelings about how she navigated those chapters in South African history. During our conversation she opens up about how she found, lost, and reclaimed her voice, and the painful obstacles that she had to overcome during the process. In her work today, she continues to raise awareness for gender based violence, working to serve, support, and uplift women fleeing violent relationships. Tune in to learn more about her story, history, and how we can participate in creating safer societies for women. - Dr.
Today's episode is all about cardiovascular fitness! I know I talk A LOT about the importance of strength training, however, getting in some cardio is also super important for your health. Not only am I talking about the science of cardiovascular fitness, I also want to share with you my triathlon experiences! Some topics I discuss are: Definition of cardiovascular exercise Why is cardiovascular fitness important? Target heart rate zones and how to use them to achieve your goals (see below for more details) How to know if your cardio is working -------------------------------------------- Target Heart Rate Zones Zone 1 - VERY Light 50% to 60% Zone 2 - Light 60% to 70% Zone 3 - Moderate 70% to 80% Zone 4 - High Intensity 80% to 90% Zone 5 - Max Effort 90% to 100% Maximum Heart Rate Formula 1.Subtract age from 220 Calculate Target Heart Rate with 220 - Age= X and multiply by Target Heart Rate Zone percentage. 2.Calculating Target Heart Rate with Karvonen Method First get your Resting Heart Rate (RHR), set aside. Next subtract age from 220 for Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) Subtract RHR from MHR for Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) Multiply HRR by % and then add back RHR Example: HRR X 70% + RHR + Target Heart Rate (THR) 220 - age 52 = 168 (MHR) 168 MHR - 45 (RHH)= 123 HRR 123 HRR X 70% = 86.1 + 45 RHR= 131 BPM (Target Heart Rate Zone 2) OR online calculator for Karvonen Method Click here -> Karvonen Calculator Links: Join Rock That Fitness Email List for Updates and tips on Nutrition, Fitness & Mindset! https://www.rockthatfitness.com Coach Anna invites you to join Rock That Fitness, The Best Online Women's Fitness Group EVER here-> https://www.rockthatfitness.com/ Rock That Fitness on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rockthatfitness Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/cruen/we-got-this License code: RBWENWHGXSWXAEUE

"I am a HUGE fan of centering Black Joy during the holidays! As an antidote to the materialism, colonial social structures, and more recently the pandemic-related isolation, I think it's important to celebrate with friends and loved ones, good food, and good music, all grounded in our rich cultural traditions. In this special episode of the “Race, Health & Happiness” podcast I sit down with my Senior Producer Dr. Karl Kabasele to share memories of holidays past, and to discuss how we can all find joy, connection, and rejuvenation during this festive season. However you celebrate, whether you embrace a religious or cultural tradition or not, there is room for everyone around our RHH holiday table! At the end of the show we also take a look at the future of RHH and our plans to expand the role of our BIPOC journalism and production students as we prepare to launch Season 4 in February of 2023.On behalf of the whole RHH Family, here's wishing you Health & Happiness now and into the New Year!” - Dr. O Access our shownotes to uncover additional meaning!(https://tinyurl.com/rhhtdnakio)Please support us on Patreon at http://www.Patreon.com/RaceHealthHappy[The “Race, Health & Happiness” podcast is produced with the support of Toronto Metropolitan University.]

The Yankees won on Labor Day, and two miracles occurred: Aaron Judge hit a home run with a runner on base (that's an indictment on his teammates, not him), and Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit his first Yankees Stadium home run (second home run of the season). Judge hit #54 on the season, which ties A-Rod for the Yankee record by an RHH, set in 2007, and is on pace for 65 (!) home runs. Kiner-Falefa is not close to setting any home run records but it was still a nice insurance run for the Yankees who went on to win 5-2 and beat the Twins again.Stacey also briefly discusses the forgettable weekend in Tampa. “For this episode of the RHH podcast, we are bringing you a throwback, and it's the very popular episode from Season 2 featuring Kike Ojo-Thompson. The reason we are doing this encore presentation is because we know that so many of you are heading back to the workplace or back into the classroom, and what she has is the ultimate advice on knowing how to succeed and understanding the game board you're playing on, especially as a Black person. And so we are bringing it back, this gem of an episode with my girl Kike!Kike's mission is to transform institutions and work cultures into more equitable spaces. Our conversation explores the tensions and intersections of Black identity within Black communities. Then we delve into the double discrimination faced by Black women called “Misogynoir”, and finally tips for staying healthy and raising resilient Black children.I love this conversation. In this special episode of Race, Health & Happiness, we are profiling one of our star interns, Jael Joseph. And as a super special treat I've also got our senior producer Dr. Karl on the mic, since he plays an important role supervising and working with our students. So… as y'all know, our podcast team is comprised of Black and BIPOC volunteer students and paid interns. Our distinguished guest Jael was our first intern, and she did such a wonderful job that a year later she was promoted to Associate Producer! She is so talented and a bright light on our team so we decided y'all should meet her! Jael is a media producer, emcee and influencer born in Dominica. Even before becoming a student at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson) she had over 10 years of experience in radio as an on-air personality and program coordinator. She is the first Black woman to be the recipient of the Faulhaber Communications Award for women aspiring to be a senior leader in communications. AND She is just wrapping up her master's degree in Media Production. Good morning! It’s a big day around the prospect world as we prepare for the Rule 5 draft tomorrow and also anticipate MLB announcing it’s “invitations” for teams to join their new minor league arrangement. We’re going to look at the new affiliate structure on Friday, but today it’s all about the Rule 5 draft.I got together with the great Giants’ twitter follow, GPT (@giantsprospects) to provide you with a great Rule 5 preview podcast. And to accompany that, I’ve given a quick summary of most of the names we covered in our talk. The links all go to players Fangraphs’ page and the player ages are their “season ages” for the 2021 season. We’ll also talked about Minor League Free Agents and Giants’ players who are performing in various Winter Leagues. Enjoy and we’ll be back to talk new affiliate structure on Friday.Minor League Free Agent candidatesJames Bourque, RHP, Age: 27Touches 99 with fastball. Good strikeout rate history and hard to hit. Has made brief major league debut. Possible Arm injury. Yunior Marte, RHP, Age: 26Fastball, good slider. Ok control. Good strikeout rate. Hit hard in AAA.And from the “Old Friends” category:Cristian Adames, MIF, Age: 29Solid defensive MIF who can play SS. Switch-hitter with strong walk rates, reasonable contract rates, a little power. Flexible middle infield depth option. Jose Siri, CF, Age: 25Toolsy CF with intriguing power/speed skills. Picked up and dropped by Giants during course of 2020, he’s having a strong winter league campaign in Dominican Republic. And, now… the Main Course:Rule 5 CandidatesPitchers (GPT choices)Trevor Stefan, RHP, New York Yankees, 2021 Age: 26Funky low-side arm angle. Good fastball-slider combination. Tough on Right-handed hitters. Type of pitcher with two maybe above average pitches and “something weird about them.”Kade McClure, RHP, Chicago White Sox, 2021 Age: 25Swing man. Could start. Fastball up to 96, good slider. Has only pitched as high as A+. White Sox like his biomechanical profile.Marshall Kasowski, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers, 2021 Age: 25Funky over the top arm angle (think Josh Collmenter). Up to 97 with fastball. Good curve ball. Control issues but Extremely hard to hit. Drafted while Zaidi was GM of Dodgers.Pitchers (Roger)Zach Pop, RHP, Baltimore Orioles, Age: 2470 grade fastball. Extreme velocity reliever with turbo-sinker. Good strikeout rates. Solid slider. Coming back from Tommy John surgery. Drafted by Dodgers during Zaidi’s time as GM and traded to Baltimore as part of package for Manny Machado.Garrett Whitlock, RHP, New York Yankees, Age: 24Yankees #18 prospect coming into 2019, also ended season prematurely with Tommy John surgery. Back healthy now and preparing for season. As with Pop, could use rehab stints to get more minor league development in before adding to major league roster. Sinker/slider type, groundball machine.Dany Jimenez, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays, Age: 27Last year’s Rule 5 pick is once again eligible. His velocity was down for Giants from what they’d seen previously, but he’s pitching in Dominican Winter Leagues and if velo has returned he might be interesting two-time pick. Hitters (GPT)Jose Rojas, 2b/3b, Los Angeles Angels, Age: 28Versatile LHH infielder had strong offensive season in 2019. Strong walk rates with big power. Not a gifted defensive player but has arm to play 3b and can fit in at 2b as well.Daniel Pinero, 3b/SS, Detroit Tigers, Age: 27Big (6’5”) infielder who has experience at SS though most observers think he’s simply to big for position. RHH with elite walk rates. Power ticked up in 2019 though not big HR numbersDrew Ellis, 3b, Arizona Diamondbacks, Age: 252017 2nd round pick. RHH Corner infielder. Had a big spike in fly ball rate in 2019 which might indicate that there’s power coming. The biggest group of potential draftees are relievers who might be able to fit into a major league bullpen right away like Cyr, Ruotolo, Raffi Vizcaino and the recently signed MiLB free agent Daniel Alvarez. (Technically Vizcaino is also a recently-signed FA, but one we’re long familiar with). Alvarez has spent his career in the Yankees organization and was at the Yankees Alternate Site this summer, though he never made it to Yankee Stadium for his debut. He throws the Giants preferred combination of a high fastball and a down-breaking curve and picked up tons of strikeouts in AA Trenton in 2019. He’s currently starting in the Venezuelan Winter League though he got knocked around a bit in his last start.GPT and I also discussed the case of LHP Luis Amaya who has been coming on since missing all of the 2017 season and most of 2018 following Tommy John surgery. Amaya is an arm that both of us have long liked, but it seems a stretch for any team to reach for him in the Rule 5 draft. He might, however, be a strong candidate for the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, depending on which minor league roster he’s currently being protected on (the minor league portion is extremely byzantine and hard to predict as teams don’t generally reveal their minor league rosters publicly during the offseason). The one position player we could see being a potential selection in the Rule 5 draft is Catcher Ricardo Genoves who profiles very well as a backup Catcher (and perhaps more) though he is very far away and would have to be “hidden” on a big league roster in 2021 and then sent back to the minors for more seasoning.Enjoy the podcast! It was great fun finally getting to talk with GPT and we hope it gets you ready for tomorrow’s draft! Get full access to There R Giants at rogermunter.substack.com/subscribe
