Eric Gottesman teaches, organizes, writes, and makes artworks with other people that address nationalism, migration, structural violence, history, and intimate relations. His work is always collaborative; he has never made an artwork alone. One of Eric's creative superpowers is his ability to take his time and gently notice the delicacy and hard edges of his subjects, without judgment, before capturing their images. The resulting pictures are remarkably soulful and honest. He is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, a Creative Capital Artist, a Fulbright Fellow and a co-founder of For Freedoms, an artist-led organization that centers art as a catalyst for creative civic engagement and was named the "largest creative collaboration in United States history" by TIME Magazine. He co-created the books Sudden Flowers (2014) and For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here? (2024). Gottesman is a mentor in the Arab Documentary Photography Program in Beirut, Lebanon, and the W.W. Ian Gottesman is CEO of a coalition of 200+ NGOs and 20 major IT companies working together to improve cybersecurity for the nonprofit sector (NGO ISAC). He has decades of experience in executive roles in nonprofit cybersecurity in a variety of organizations. In these challenging times for the nonprofit sector generally, many nonprofits are taking a harder look at their cybersecurity policies to better protect their organization and staff. Community IT recommends getting to a foundational level of basic cybersecurity, and you can download our free Cybersecurity Readiness for Nonprofits Playbook to learn what that means and how to put those basics in place. Three cybersecurity basics to think about: manage your identity, patch your hardware and software, and look out for phishing – train your staff. You will get 80% protection from just doing those three low cost things – why would you want to get 0%?When your cybersecurity basics are in place, Ian recommends strengthening your nonprofit data retention policy and compliance as your first next step. Again, this is low cost in terms of your budget, but will have costs to your organization in terms of staff time and energy. So let this challenging moment motivate your team to take on a sorting-and-retaining-or-deleting project. Some Key Takeaways:Cybersecurity Basics are not difficult and protect you from 80% of hacks.Manage your identity. Accounts must be protected, your staff should be verifying they are who is supposed to be logging in.Patch your hardware and software. The easiest way to do this is reboot – log out, restart, and log back in periodically. Your IT provider or internal IT staff should be patching as part of your cybersecurity strategy.Look out for phishing – train your staff. More than 90% of attacks start out tricking a user into clicking a link. For more information on anti-phishing training, check out this webinar on Cybersecurity Awareness Training Tips.Cybercrimes are crimes.Don't feel that you were responsible for your own victimization. Clicking on links happens. Huge companies fall for scams. Encourage a culture of openness and sharing around cybersecurity best practices and incident response planning.Make sure your nonprofit culture embraces a team approach to cybersecurity, and that everyone on your staff knows to tell someone when they see something suspicious or make a mistake, and who to tell. Holding cybercriminals accountable in every country should be a bigger goal for our governments and our laws. Nonprofit Data Retention Policy is a valuable project now.Remind your staff not to put in writing in any device or app something they would not want to be public about your organizationCreating and monitoring compliance with a nonprofit data retention policy does not require expensive tools but it does require the time and energy of your staff. Avoiding unnecessary reputational risks is worth it. Make sure your nonprofit data retention policy covers emails and messaging in addition to documents and files. _______________________________Start a conversation :) Register to attend a webinar in real time, and find all past transcripts at https://communityit.com/webinars/ email Carolyn at cwoodard@communityit.com on LinkedIn Thanks for listening.

Ep. 64 - Let's Look at the Eclipse! (Not Literally)

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2024 60:28

Who doesn't love an eclipse? Apparently, wildlife has very mixed feelings about the whole affair. This month, the guys prepare for the upcoming 2024 total eclipse by looking into the research around how animals react to the moon photobombing the sun for a few minutes. The reactions are not universal, but they are varied. And trying to figure out what the animals are up to makes for a fascinating listen. This episode was recorded on March 20, 2024 at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Cheektowaga, NY.Episode NotesBill mentioned that “wind is air moving between temperature differences.” When listening back to the episode during editing, he worried that maybe he was wrong on that. Looking it up, he did find some websites claiming that wind is due to differences in air pressure and that temperature has little to do with it, but it turns out that's not quite true either. According to the good people at NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the organization referred to in this episode), the answer is both. Their short answer to “what makes wind?” is that it's the movement of gases from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas. BUT, they go on to say that the main cause of wind is actually temperature. More specifically, it's differences in temperature that lead to different air pressures. It all starts because as the sun warms up the air on the Earth, it does so unevenly. Because the sun hits different parts of the Earth at different angles, and because Earth has oceans, mountains, and other features, some places are warmer than others. Because of this, we get pockets of warm air and cold air.Since gases behave differently at different temperatures, that means you also get pockets with high pressure and pockets with low pressure. Generally speaking (and notice we said generally), in areas of high pressure, the gases in the air are colder and more crowded. In low pressure zones, the gases are warmer and a little more spread out. And this is why wind happens. Gases move from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas. And the bigger the difference between the pressures, the faster the air will move from the high to the low pressure. That rush of air is the wind we experience.Bill stated that perigee when the moon is farthest from the Earth. WRONG! The point in the moon's orbit where it is farthest from the earth is called apogee, while it's closest approach is known as perigee.Steve mentioned he though an eclipse viewer was like a camera obscura, and he was correct! A camera obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole. The camera obscura was used to study eclipses without the risk of damaging the eyes by looking directly into the Sun. From WikpediaLinks Ways to get involved recording weather and/or animal behaviors during the eclipse:The Eclipse Soundscapes Project is a NASA Citizen Science project that's studying how eclipses affect life on EarthSolar Eclipse Safari is another Citizen Science option that invites you to collect data on animals and their behaviors during the eclipse. Gluttony is a sin to avoid, sugar is bad for you, but drinking plenty of water is great for the body. The fastest growing girls sport is wrestling, with many young ladies hitting the mats and participating in amateur competitions. Commander Drew had a crush on one professional wrestler named Miss Jones, who was part of the duo known as The Cat & Miss Jones. Meet the wingman to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Philip Ozuah. This distinguished medical professional originally trained in Nigeria and upon graduation from the same college of medicine, provided much needed services to people in the Bronx, the poorest borough in New York City. In addition to his numerous accomplishments and responsibilities, he was an integral part of the large donation for student tuition from Ruth Gottesman. After the passing of her husband she was left with a large fortune from her late spouse who was a financial titan on Wall Street. The only request he had was that it be used to “do what's best”. It was the relationship between these Dr. Ozuah and Dr. Gottesman during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic that helped make the billion dollar gift to the school a reality.

[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. If you have suggestions or feedback on how I can earn your paid subscription, shoot me an email: cmclymer@gmail.com. And yes, I am available for speaking engagements.]Folks, I'm starting a new feature on my blog. Every Monday morning, I'll be sending you five items that I hope will start your week off right, give you a smile, make you laugh, make you think, and just make you feel good.Because the current state of our world—and particularly our country's politics—is, well, pretty fraught, I figure we can all use a breather from stressful news items and pay a bit of attention to some of the good happening around us.It's called Five Things You Should Know, and I hope it makes your Monday mornings a little brighter and more bearable moving forward.1. Caitlin Clark Becomes All-Time NCAA ScorerWhen Caitlin Clark was in 2nd grade, she wanted to play competitive basketball, but her father couldn't find a girls league. So, she joined a boys team at her grade level and wound up winning the state tournament that year. Some parents on other teams protested that girls shouldn't be permitted to play on boys' teams.Yesterday, Ms. Clark became the NCAA's all-time leading scorer, for both women and men, when she overtook Pete “Pistol Pete” Maravich, breaking the legend's iconic record that had stood for more than half a century. This is the crowning individual achievement for Ms. Clark, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest college basketball players of all-time. Along the way, she's won every award at the collegiate level and shattered attendance records in arenas across the country.2. The Voice of the NYC Subway System is a Trans WomanSince 2009, if you've taken the subway in New York City, chances are pretty high that you've heard an authoritative yet comforting voice guide passengers around town and offer friendly advice. For millions of New Yorkers, that voice has become something of an institution in their daily lives. It belongs to Bernie Wagenblast, who initially built a long career as a radio journalist before being hired for her voice by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority more than 15 years ago. She also now records announcements for New Jersey Transit and the Kennedy and Newark airports.Ms. Wagenblast came out publicly as a trans woman in 2022. Her journey is extraordinary and makes me smile.I deeply admire her.3. Medical School Will Be Tuition Free After $1 Billion DonationLast week, Ruth Gottesman, a former professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, announced to that institution's student body that tuition will be now be free, thanks to her donation of $1 billion, thought to be one of the largest individual financial contributions to a college or university in history. Dr. Gottesman credited her husband, David “Sandy” Gottesman, a Wall Street investment banker and former board member at Berkshire Hathaway, for the enormous amount of the donation. He passed away in 2022. They had been married for 72 years. The video of the audience reaction to Dr. Gottesman's announcement is a must-see.4. CVS and Walgreens Will Begin Selling Abortion Pills This MonthOn Friday, the two largest pharmacy chains in the country announced they would begin selling mifepristone, the abortion pill, in its stores this month. It will initially be offered at Walgreens pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California and at CVS pharmacies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Both chains plan to expand access to the pill in a slow rollout beyond those states over time where abortion is still legal. It will not be accessible by mail. There's currently a pending case regarding mifepristone on the Supreme Court docket that's shaping up to have far-ranging consequences for reproductive freedom, FDA regulations, and much more. A date for oral arguments in that case has not yet been set.5. I'm Speaking at the 2024 SXSW Conference & Festival This WeekendEvery March, a few hundred thousand folks gather in Austin, Texas for the better part of two weeks to take part in the latest and most trendy topics in politics, tech, education, music, film, and television. It's an enormous and exciting gathering, and I'm lucky to be taking part in it this year, alongside Prof. Robin Maril, Willamette University School of Law; Andy Marra, Exec. Director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund; and Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas, the state's largest LGBTQ rights organization. The four of us will be discussing LGBTQ rights in the context of the 2024 election in a panel entitled “Defending Democracy: LGBTQ Activism and Power in 2024.”Unfortunately, it will not be live-streamed, but I encourage folks attending SXSW to come to our session and learn more about our goals in the fight for equality this year.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication.
