Would anyone have voted Labour if they had put in their manifesto that they wanted to ban smoking outside pubs, Cut Winter fuel payments, not sort out the boats, would try to rejoin the EU by the back door, and thought that the majority of us are racist? With Noel and Liam back its like a return to the nineties with Blair but at least with Cool Britannia and "Things can only get better" Blair sold us hope and a bright future. But Starmer has no vision, he is the Mr Magoo of Britsh politics. He wants 10 years to fix Britain but he will be lucky to get 10 months. Everyone is getting sent to Prison except a bloke who threw objects at Nigel Farage. Then they try and tell us we don't have a two tier society. Laurel Hill is not named for the plant called Laurel. Laurel Hill was originally part of the Joseph Sims estate, and Joseph went by "Laurel," the property was named Laurel Hill in his honor. Mountain Laurel is botanically known as Kalmia latifolia in honor of the Finnish botanist Pehr Kalm. After his expedition to North America in the mid-1700s, Pehr correctly predicted that the American colonists would eventually rebel. Laurel Hill became America's first National Historic Landmark Cemetery.   November 16, 1835 On this day, the Hartford Courant wrote a piece called Gardener's Work For November. It is now quite time to [preserve] the roots and ...Mr. McMahon's method of preserving roots is as follows: Previous to the commencement of severe frost, you should take up, with as little injury as possible, the roots of your turnips, carrots, parsnips, beets, salsify, scorzonera, Hamburg, or large-rooted parsley, skirrots, Jerusalem artichokes, turnip-rooted celery, and ...horseradish… On the surface of a dry spot of ground, in a well-sheltered situation, lay a stratum of sand two-inches thick, [the place the root crops], covering them with another layer of sand, (the drier the better,) and…continue to layer about of sand and roots till all are laid in… then cover the heap or ridge [with] a good coat of straw, up and down as if thatching a house.   November 16, 1843 Birth of Odoardo Beccari, Italien botanist. After growing up an orphan, Beccarri managed to get an education in his native Italy, and he eventually traveled to England to study at Kew. Beccarri was friends with Hooker and Darwin, but he also befriended James Brooke, which meant he could spend three years exploring Borneo. During his lifetime, Becarri traveled all over India, Malaysia, and New Zealand. But it was on a little voyage he took to central Sumatra (in Indonesia) in 1878 that Beccarri discovered the plant with which he will forever be associated: the Amorphophallus titanum - or the Titan arum - the largest flower in the world. Seven years later, in 1885, the first Titan arum specimen bloomed at Kew, and when it happened, it created a sensation. Today, a Titan arum bloom still draws thousands of visitors. People love to take a selfie in front of the giant blooming plant. The flower is commonly referred to as the corpse flower as it smells like rotting flesh.   In a recent fascinating article, scent scientists identified the compounds that make up that terrible smell. The odor includes aspects of cheese sweat, rotting fish, decomposing meat, and garlic, among even worse unmentionable compounds. The putrid smell is meant to attract beetles and other insects to move pollen between blooming plants so that they can reproduce. It takes the corpse flower a decade before it can bloom. Incredibly, the plants only bloom for 24-36 hours before collapsing. Between that first bloom at Kew (back in 1885) and the year 2000, fewer than fifty Titan arum blooms had been recorded. But, in 2016, suddenly, dozens of corpse flowers around the world bloomed within weeks of each other. Horticulturists are still attempting to discern the reason for the clustered bloom event.   November 16, 1920 On this day, The Buffalo Times shared a poem by Louise Driscoll that had appeared in The New York Times called November Garden. Here's the first and last verse. In my November garden, I found a larkspur blossoming,  A lovely, radiant blue thing.  It swayed and shone,  And did not seem to know It was alone  In my November garden.  Where dry, dark leaves are falling  And all the birds have flown. The birds and Summer went  A way that no man knows. But here is honey that No bee will find.  No bird will linger at  This larkspur cup. This grace the butterfly  Has left behind. Summer went away And gave it up Yet it is bravely blue Swinging there alone  As if to challenge you!     Unearthed Words It is the pomegranate that gives Fesenjoon its healing capabilities. The original apple of sin, the fruit of a long-gone Eden, the pomegranate shields itself in a leathery crimson shell, which in Roman times was used as a form of protective hide. Once the pomegranate's bitter skin is peeled back, though, a juicy garnet flesh is revealed to the lucky eater, popping and bursting in the mouth like the final succumber of lovemaking. Long ago, when the earth remained still, content with the fecundity of perpetual spring, and Demeter was the mother of all that was natural and flowering, it was this tempting fruit that finally set the seasons spinning. Having eaten six pomegranate seeds in the underworld, Persephone, the Goddess of Spring's high-spirited daughter, had been forced to spend six months of the year in the eternal halls of death. Without her beautiful daughter by her side, a mournful Demeter retreated to the dark corners of the universe, allowing for the icy gates of winter to finally creak open. A round crimson herald of frost, the pomegranate comes to harvest in October and November, so Fesenjoon is best made with its concentrate during other times of the year. ― Marsha Mehran, Pomegranate Soup   Grow That Garden Library Plant by Phaidon Editors  This book came out in 2016, and the subtitle is Exploring the Botanical World. This book is gorgeous. You might remember it - it's got a black background and then a simple blossom design. Each of the leaves is made with a different type of fabric which makes for a magnificent cover. Now, of course, like all Phaidon books, this book is so visually appealing from the cover to the inside of the book. The whole point is to show the beauty and the diversity of plants through 300 works of botanical art that date back from ancient times all the way to modern times. You'll see plants and flowers and the entire botanical world portrayed using a variety of different mediums. Phaidon did a great job of curating all of these images. This is the first book to pull together botanical art across so many different media types and from such a broad timeline and every corner of the globe. Of course, in this book, you're going to see beautiful botanical art, but then you're also going to get lots of expert information about the pieces of art and the plants that are depicted. Phaidon is known for putting together high-level, very specialized books. And in this case, to tackle this broad topic of plants, they pulled together all kinds of experts, museum curators, horticulturists, historians, botanists, and more. Then they had each of them contribute their expertise in creating the text for this book. I love what Gardens Illustrated wrote about this book: "A dazzling collection of more than 300 images of plants that brings the evolution of botanical art right into the 21st century... Alongside old favorites, such as Redoute and Mary Delany, there is much here that is both unfamiliar and arresting... An extraordinary collection."  This book is 352 pages of botanical art that gives us a new appreciation and understanding of plants and their role in our history and culture. You can get a copy of Plant: Exploring the Botanical World by Phaidon Editors and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $17.   Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart November 16, 1999 On this day, The Columbus Telegram shared a column by Elizabeth Coblentz  - an Old Order Amish woman who handwrote her column by lantern light in her Indiana home. November is now on the calendar, and we are still having beautiful days in the 70s. The laundry is drying well out there on the clothesline, and work is continuing in our garden.  I have been taking the celery, carrots, red beets, cabbage, and pumpkins out from the garden today. Hopefully, the weather will stay nice, and some vegetables will grow even larger.  To the reader who sent me radish and turnip seeds to plant: I did plant them in August, and we are now feasting on them. They are very good and tender, which was surprising considering our hot, dry summer.  I put some leftover small potatoes in the ground, and the yield was good. I should have put more sweet potato plants in the ground, but at least we have enough for a good taste this winter. We'll be glad for all this hard work in the garden during the long, cold, dark days of January when we can open those canning jars and taste the bounty of summer.  Sunday evening, we planned a favorite around here for supper: tacos.  We had a large gathering, but having family over is the best of times. Those sweet, precious grandchildren are always welcome here, so the house was full of children. We all enjoy a taco supper. The tomatoes, mangoes (peppers) and onions used on the tacos were all from our garden. Canned hamburger was browned for the tacos, and there was lots more to feast on because everyone else brought a covered dish. As the family gets bigger and older we have to use larger containers now.  Here is a good dessert to use those beets from the garden:   Red Beet Chocolate Cake  1 1/2 cups sugar  3 eggs  1 cup oil  1 1/2 cups cooked, pureed, fresh beets  2 (1 ounce) squares of unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled  1 teaspoon vanilla  1 3/4 cups flour  1/2 teaspoon salt  1/2 teaspoon baking soda  sifted confectioner's sugar Mix flour, soda, and salt. Set aside. Combine sugar, eggs, and oil in a mixing bowl. Stir vigorously. (People who use electric mixers can use them here at medium speed for 2 minutes.) Beat in beets, chocolate, and vanilla. Gradually add dry ingredients, beating well after each addition. Pour into buttered 9-inch by 13-inch cake pan. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes or till cake tests done when a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in pan. Cover and let stand overnight to improve flavor. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. PS. You can put cream cheese icing on instead of powdered sugar.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Deputy Nationals Leader Bridget McKenzie resigned over her role in the sports rorts affair, this set up a leadership spill for both Nationals positions with Barnaby Joyce challenging leader Michael McCormack. Completing the minor party leadership changes Bob Katter handed over leadership of his Katter's Australian Party to his son Robbie Katter. The Anglo-Boer War

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2019 19:29

An incredible turn of events was taking place after a few icy months of winter - the Boers were waking up like hibernating bears and there would be a sudden escalation in incidents across south Africa. General Jan Smuts led a commando of around 400 men. He had survived three near misses after entering the Cape in the first week of September 1901. Remember I'd explained how he was first attacked by a group of Basutho's, then he was ambushed by a British patrol while conducting surveillance - losing three men and his horse, then he was surrounded on a flat-topped hill in the Stormberg range. He escaped after being led to a steep ravine by an unnamed hunchback. General Louis Botha meanwhile, had managed to invade Natal with a much larger force of around 2000 men in his commando and had savaged a British cavalry unit near the town of Dundee. I explained last week how Captain Gough had charged straight into this commando, and lost virtually all of his 245 men. Botha and his commando had been marching south skirting both Zululand and just clipping the Swaziland border. His men were riding fast - they had hundreds of pack mules and pack horses, leaving their cumbersome ox wagons. They had armed themselves with both Lee Metford and Mauser rifles so could take advantage of seized Britsh ammunition. As Major Hubert Gough had discovered, this commando was moving swiftly. Remember the invasion of Natal was the other half of the grand strategy agreed with Smuts at the meeting in Standerton earlier in the year. The military aim was to divert pressure from the occupied Republics, its political aim, to prove that the war was not over.

Measured in Metric

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2019 52:21

In this special episode our topic is a little less about engineering and a little more about urban planning. We take a journey back in time to the now demolished Kowloon Walled City, a dense settlement occupying a small portion of British-controlled Hong Kong. The small territory remained officially under China’s control, but Britain’s control of the island of Hong Kong left China with little influence, and the abandoned administrative centre would grow organically into a free anarchist state. There are typically two trains of thought within urban planning: an approach heavy on government intervention, laden with zoning laws, regulation and what we might think of as red tape, compared with an approach of communities that grow organically to serve the needs of the community as and when needed. The Kowloon Walled City was a living example of the second train of thought pushed to the extreme. The 2.6 hectare city was extremely dense, housing up to 50,000 people at its peak with a population density roughly the equivalent of 1 - 2 million people per square kilometre, orders of magnitude higher than the famously crowded Manhattan at 27,000 people per square kilometre, or the 41,000 in the world’s current densest city: Manila. The density was in no small part due to one of the only building restrictions in the city, a 14-storey height limit so planes could safely fly above the city and land in Hong Kong’s former airport just a short 800 metres south of the city. Despite the limit some photographs depict planes having to nearly navigate around buildings on descent. The city contained not just residential, but also commercial and industrial space including restaurants, schools, and unlicensed doctors and dentists. Absolutely no space was unused leaving absolutely no green space and children playing on rooftops. Buildings were built so close together that even during broad daylight the alleyways were dark and wet from the many air conditioners in the levels above, and many of the buildings leaned against each other. After Britain had taken control of Hong Kong back from Japan following the second world war thousands of immigrants from China began moving into Kowloon, leading to a total of 2,000 residents by 1947 essentially squatting in the city. At first Britain had attempted to drive the squatters out but gave up and adopted a “hands-off” policy to Kowloon by just 1948. This policy meant a lack of police presence and basic utilities such as power and water, in part to discourage habitation in the city. The lack of power led to most residents using kerosine lamps and stoves resulting in massive fires and huge losses of life. China Light & Power would then be responsible for supplying power to the city, but demand for power consistently exceeded the supply, power theft was very common, and the implementation of the utility was anything but safe. By 1984 both the Britsh and the Chinese had completely lost any control over the city with crime and lawlessness spilling out into the rest of Hong Kong, leading to its demolition being announced in 1987. The remaining 35,000 residents would be compensated by the government so they might relocate into Hong Kong, however this compensation was only the equivalent today of a meagre $16,00, hardly enough to go far in historically expensive Hong Kong. The demolition would be completed in 1993, just a few years before Britain would cede control of Hong Kong to China in 1997. John leaves us with the understatement of the 20th century: “So, not impressed with the British" Image Gallery: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 Learn more at: MeasuredInMetric.com Edited by: Astronomic Audio Contact us: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Arcadia Ales are British Inspired, American Brewed Michigan has a thriving craft beer scene and Arcadia Ales has been a part of it for over 20 years.  Originally based in Battle Creek, an expansion brought them to Kalamazoo where their brewery sits on 400' of riverfront allowing visitors to launch their kayaks and canoes, or just relax and have a beer. For most of their history, Arcadia brewed exclusively via a process unique to most American breweries.  All of their beers were fermented in open vessels with a single yeast strain.  In 2016 they added closed fermenters and other yeasts, but a large portion of their portfolio is still brewed with their open fermentation method.  They've also started a sour program and released beers like Battle Kriek, and further experimentation recently brought them to making mead. Arcadia's Director of Sales Steffan Phillippo joined us this week to talk about how the Britsh inspiration is implemented, the challenges of open fermentation, cherry festivals, glitter beers, and pasties.  We also discuss their recent collaboration with heavy metal legends Motörhead for a US beer release, Röad Crew IPA, which pairs perfectly with headbanging. We also talk with local Atlanta artist Catlanta about his work and tease a collaboration project with Beer Guys Radio to benefit an awesome local charity.  Stay tuned for more info on what we're up to.  Catlanta also shared a special beer he scored in Iceland.  Hvalur 2 is brewed with sheep dung smoked whale's testicles.  Hvalur 1 had the whale testicles but left out the important dung smoking step. #whalezbro News and Brews In the news this week we share some mid-year craft beer stats, research progress in pursuit of a Florida hop farming industry, and some drama between Toppling Goliath and a former brewer over non-compete issues. In addition to the whale balls beer, we enjoyed Arcadia's Röad Crew, Barrel-aged Shipwreck Porter, and Mango Surprise IPA.  We also cracked a few Florida brews courtesy of a beer mail from our friend Darryl, a Creature Comforts Crescendo, and Hopstix Rice and Shine. Mere Rhetoric
Speech Act Debates (NEW AND IMPROVED!)

Mere Rhetoric

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2016 9:35

Speech acts debate     Mere rhetoric a podcast for beginners and insiders about the people, ideas and movements that have shaped the rhetorical world.     Probably one of the best titles of any book in rhetorical history is J. L. Austin’s How to Do Things with Words. In fact, this is often what I tell people is what rhetoric is all about: doing things with words. But actually, Austen had something more in mind when he prepared these 12 lectures for Harvard Universitiy in 1955. All words do something—encourage, persuade, shame— but this philosopher points out that some words are what he calls “performative”—their utterance does something. Think, for example of the phrase “I now declare you man and wife,” which creates a marriage in the utterance, or “I knight you Sir Patrick Stewart” or “We christen this ship the USS Lollipop” which do similar sorts of things through the words themselves.   Now Austin doesn’t think that words themselves are the only things that create whatever these performative speech acts create: after all, the state says that only certain people with certain qualifications are allowed to go around to marry or knight or christen. Austin says that speech acts can be “misfired” when the procedure is done incorrectly, under the incorrect circumstances or by incorrect people. If I try to knight you, the act wasn’t false—the words still make sense because there is such a thing as knighting, and they grammatically hang together—but you don’t get to call yourself a knight of the rhelm because the act misfired. The other way that these speech acts can fail to get off the ground is if they’re done insincerely or without the right internal condition. Think of marriages performed in plays or movies, or quoting someone else or any comment you’ve made that you’ve followed up with a “just kidding!” So although Austin is far more complex than that in practice, the crux of his lectures are this: words can do things, unless the authority isn’t right and unless the act was done insincerely. It’s a nice little book—not too big and with a good deal of the wry Britsh academic humor which the 1950s, along with tweed and horne glasses, brimmed with.   But it started something more.   Speech act theory, as Austin’s ideas became more developed, became the arena of one of the greatest debates in language philosophy: John Searle on the one and hand J. Derrida on the other.   Derrida, as you can imagine, was fascinated by much of this, including Austin’s rakish suggestion that we might not know when someone IS being sincere, so how do we know when the act has gone off? If I say, “just kidding” afterwards, does that undo the snide comment? For Derrida, jokes, sarcasm, or fiction don’t invalidate speech acts, because such non-serious or "parasitic" speech are in no way distinquishable from any other speech act: how do we know when someone is being insincere?   Searle wrote a short response to Derrida "Reiterating the Differences: A Reply to Derrida", saying that Austin wasn’t including those types of speech as performative speech acts because they were beyond the scope of his argument.   In “Limited Inc a b c …” Derrida claims that “no intention can ever be fully conscious” to an author(s) (73). This author(s), so decentralized and unoriginal, is not even necessary to their writing because “writing […] must be able to function in the absence of the sender, the receiver, the context of production, etc.” (48 These insincere utterances, are not simple mistakes of the serious. Derrida states that, “A corruption that is ‘always possible’ cannot be a mere extrinsic accident” (77). In this sense, Derrida reads Austin as viewing “the parasite [as] part of so-called ordinary language, and it is part of it as a parasite” (97); however, before he is done, Derrida will “reverse the order of dependence” and assert that this “so-called ordinary language” is, in fact, a subspecies of the parasite (104).   Anyway, they go back and forth like that for a while, which is not surprising, because Searle, as a analytic philosopher has a radically different view on the purpose of philosophy than Derrida the deconstructionist does. Mostly the argument involves the two of them complaining that the other doesn’t understand what they’re trying to do, as well as Searle saying that Derrida isn’t a serious enough philosopher who and Derrida saying Searle needs to remove a stick from his orifice. Enlightening stuff like that.     But both of them wanted some claim on Austin’s speech acts. Early in “Limited Inc a,b,c…” Derrida derisively referred to Sarl and (their) ilk as “self-made, auto-authorized heirs of Austin”—those who take themselves as the defenders of a created Austin orthodoxy (37). While Derrida did spend a lot of time talking about copyright, he didn’t spend too much of his limited ink (ha) talking about the implications of claiming and owning the speech act philosophy. He did criticize, heavily, though, the idea that his claim on Austin’s ideas were somehow illegitimate. He chaffed at the title of Sarl’s second chapter—“Derrida’s Austin”—and the claim that “Derrida’s Austin is unrecognizable” (qt in Limited 88, italics in original). Much of what he does in “Limited Inc” is to assert that his (mis?) interpretation of Austin is just as valid a continuing of the tradition as Sarl’s. In fact, there is a Sarl’s Austin as clearly as there is a Derrida’s.   And there is also a Sarl’s Derrida and Derrida’s Searle, with caused both philosophers a lot of frustration, often claiming that words and concepts attributed to them were not in the original and making frequent pleas that his interlocutors just read again his original piece and see what was actually there.   In some ways, it’s not surprising that an analytic philosopher and a deconstructionist would have a hard time understanding each other’s positions on something as crucial for each of them as whether there is a distinction between serious and non-serious language. But despite the frustration and often pettiness of the debate, I kind of love that it happened. It created some of Derrida and Searle’s best work, as they both engaged the opposition and found news ways to describe their positions on what Austin wrote. When you think about all the pages that Derrida and Searle produced in this particular controversy, it seems like the engagement was fruitful.   I don’t wan to editorialize too much, but it seems like sometimes we just disengage with theorists or thinkers we don’t agree with, instead of wrestling with them. Not that I think Searle and Derrida were always scholarly about their disagreement, but I rather like that they took each other seriously enough to engage. So me, for my part, I declare this a Very Fruitful Debate, for which speech act I have absolute authority.

Eric and Marie don the Safari helmuts, the hiking boots and gather our passports as we go exploring this week with our guest John Kirk III of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club. The author of the award-winning book In the Domain of the Lake Monsters, John Kirk is one of the world's leading cryptozoological investigators. As president of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club (BCSCC), John is part of a team of investigators that have searched for cryptids such as Ogopogo, Sasquatch, Cadborosaurus, black alligators, unknown cameloids, lacustrean cryptids and giant salamanders in the province of British Columbia. The club is scientifically based with a large portion consisting of open-minded academics who feel the existence of new species of animals lying undiscovered is not such a farfetched idea. John is also Editor and Publisher of the BCSCC Quarterly well-known for its balanced approached to the enigma of mystery animals and also author of the club website. John has ventured far afield in his quest for evidence for the mystery animals of the world in many areas of the world including Scotland, the Republic of Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo. In 2001 and one John was part of the Cryptosafari team which investigated reports of an animal called Mokele Mbembe which bears an uncanny resemblance to a sauropod dinosaur. While on this expedition the Cryptosafari team unearthed the first reports of a manlike creature standing over six feet tall, with three toes and fingers which in habits the Cameroon-Congo border region known to locals as the Dodu. Another mystery animal, the Ngoubou, was also described and this animal has features consistent with those a styracosaurus, part of the family of ceratopsians said to have been extinguished from the planet millions of years ago. In addition to his cryptozoological research, John is a keen student of police methodologies and investigation techniques which he feels are very useful in the field of cryptozoological research. Analyzing and then organizing clues and evidentiary materials is an important part of the cryptozoological method and John is keen to share this with other researchers in this field. John has also extensively studied the musculature of the creature in the Patterson film and in 1999 was the first to report specifically on the substantial musculature differences between the creature and a human being which were detailed in the BCSCC Quarterly. It is John's hope that the day will come when cryptozoological researchers will be at the forefront of using technologies and equipment that are of the cutting edge variety in their search for cryptids. The Wigglian Way Pagan Podcast

Episode 126 is brought to you by the letter DARK.  The music is dark and the subject matter is often at least some shade of dark. We are talking about divorce on this episode. In fact, I got to interview Diana Rajchel about her new book, Divorcing a Real Witch: For Pagans and the people that used to Love Them. Often we don't get enough information about divorce and how to go about it in a healthy way. Thanks to Diana, we have a pagan resource for that now. Thank you for joining us Diana.  Due to the subject matter, and the fact that we met Damh the Bard and he likes metal music, we are playing all heavy tunes this show.  The Feature album comes to us from Tyr and their 2011 release, The Lay of Thyrm. From The Lay of Thyrm, we hear The Lay of Thyrm, Evening Star, and to end the show Stargazer.  We wanted to keep with the metalness of the episode and so we round out the evenings musical entertainment with Leaves' Eyes, Twilight Sun from the Vinland Saga cd and Cruachan with Viking Slayer, from the Pagan cd.  We have been having a great summer and hope that  you are too.  It's all about the Love!

Is procrastination the same everywhere? A recent email from a listener (check out her blog at incurable-hippie) provided an example of two cultures (the Britsh and the French) where it seems to differ. I discuss this issue in relation to published research as well as the work of one of my doctoral students, Mohsen Haghbin (Carleton University), who joins me to present his perspective. It's a wide-ranging discussion of what words mean in relation to psychological constructs across cultures and time. Jonathan Miller could rightly be described as a Renaissance man. Trained as a neurologist, he became heavily involved in the arts. In 1960, he co-wrote and appeared in a Britsh comedy revue series called "Beyond The Fringe". He went on to direct many theatre productions, including King Lear with Christopher Plummer and many operas. He talks about events in his life and of his dislike for Britian's Prime Minister, Tony Blair. (Originally aired May 2003)
