Now an esteemed professor at a private Upstate New York university, Robert has just received a significant NEH grant. After Lily's visit, Robert's life is upended. His wife Stephanie reveals she is unhappy in the marriage and takes their teenage son to visit her sister in PA. Brooke's former best friend, Aaron Reardon, still devastated from Brooke's disappearance, offers to help. And forever lurking in the background is Mike Rakowski, Brooke's ex, a possessive, abusive drug addict. As Robert's world unravels, he revisits that night twenty-one years ago where everything went wrong, unearthing a horrible, bone-chilling secret. In the vein of Simone St. James' Sun Down Motel and other female-driven domestic psychological thrillers today, All Who Wander mines the depths of past transgression, begging the question: do past sins automatically negate future happiness?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. What a delight to be joined by another huge talent - the Singer, Songwriter & Musician, Edgar Jones for this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast... Also known as Edgar 'Summertyme' Jones, his musical path began in the early 90s, as frontman and founder of Liverpool band The Stairs, championed by the likes of Elvis Costello and signed to Go! Discs, then also the home of future collaborators Paul Weller and The La's. His other bands include The Isrites, The Big Kids, Edgar Jones & The Joneses and Free Peace. His 2005 solo album Soothing Music For Stray Cats was released to critical acclaim with Noel Gallagher commenting "It bent my head, man. It's probably one of the best records I have ever heard" and Mojo Magazine labelling it "A stunning collection of rock'n'roll, jazz, R&B and doo wop". Edgar has also played and toured with artists including Ian McCulloch, Saint Etienne and Ocean Colour Scene and of course, our podcast subject - Paul Weller. Edgar joined the Weller band to play bass for the Heliocentric tour in 2000 - including a very special performance at London's Royal Albert Hall - which featured Steve White and Steve Cradock, along with Edgar on bass and Chris Holland on keyboards. Legendary arranger, Robert Kirby also conducted a stunning 16-piece string orchestra, which accompanied the band on most songs. The performance was released as a 90-minute filmed performance on DVD. Edgar was also part of the band for the Jools Holland Lennon Special and a recording for The Who Tribute album... On the latest Classic Album Sundays podcast, we step back to Camp Bestival from a few years ago when Nick Drake's producer Joe Boyd joined us to discuss ‘Five Leaves Left' in length with Colleen. Alongside Joe's production the album features Richard Thompson (of Fairport Convention) and Danny Thompson (of Pentangle) as well as the beautiful string arrangements of Robert Kirby. Despite being championed by John Peel, the album initially sold less than 6,000 copies. Now, over four decades since Drake's death, Five Leaves Left is seen as an iconic album in British Folk music and his songs are cited as an influence by Peter Buck of REM and Robert Smith of The Cure. In this episode we welcome the wonderful Vashti Bunyan — all the way from her home in Edinburgh — and ask her about her magical music and the remarkable memoir she's just published. The "freak folk" legend — though she strongly disavows the "folk" tag — begins by talking of her early musical memories, among them meeting an unhappy Cliff Richard backstage in Blackpool in 1961. She describes her dream of becoming a pop singer in mid-'60s London, and how that led her to the Mayfair office of Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Briefly and unhappily typecast as "a dark-haired Marianne Faithfull", she recalls the session for the Jagger-Richards song 'Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind', backed up in the studio by Jimmy Page & Nicky Hopkins. Vashti explains how she felt equally adrift in the world of folk, eventually dropping out of the London music scene to travel to the Outer Hebrides in a horse-drawn wagon. This is the journey she writes about so vividly in Wayward, leading circuitously to Joe Boyd producing her 1970 album Just Another Diamond Day. After a discussion of that exquisite record, she talks about why she neither wrote nor sang another song for 30 years… then admits how much it meant when younger admirers like Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart discovered the album in 2000, subsequently appearing on her Lookaftering (2005) and Heartleap (2014). With Nick Drake's final album Pink Moon turning 50 this year, we take Vashti back to the awkward afternoon she spent trying to write a song with him after Joe Boyd had introduced them. Along the way we hear clips of Joe speaking to Gerrie Lim about Nick's guitar playing and "romantic doom" in 1994. After paying our respects to Saints frontman Chris Bailey, we touch on highlights among the 120+ articles just added to the RBP library, including pieces about Charles Mingus (1962), Dusty in Memphis (1969), the Smiths (1987) and Fatboy Slim (1997). Jasper's selection of a recent Michael McDonald interview gives us the perfect excuse to explain to Vashti what "Yacht Rock" is… after which we hear a final clip from the Boyd interview. Think of any number of singers of the 20th century to take to a stage: Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Bon Scott, Nina Simone.....”shyness” would not be any sort of adjective you'd use to describe these people. We're not focusing on any of them this time around.Welcome to episode 152 of Love That Album Podcast. To say that Nick Drake suffered from shyness could be the greatest understatement you could make about him. He only performed live a few times in his short life, and from all documented accounts, those performances were memorable for the wrong reasons – not acknowledging his audiences, looking down, walking off stage mid song....the same can be said for his interactions with people off the stage. However, it would also be fair to say that Drake knew his way around a song – both as composer and musician.I am joined by fellow Nick-Head, Antony Rotunno. Antony is the host of three excellent podcasts: Life & Life Only, Film Gold, and Glass Onion: On John Lennon. It is the third of these shows that got my attention. On every show he tackles Lennon related subjects (with occasional forays into The Beatles) to work out what made Lennon tick. I am sure that he relished the opportunity to talk about a musician with no Beatles connection whatsoever for a change. The focus of the show is Drake's debut album, Five Leaves Left. However, we speak in detail about all three of his albums as well as events in his life, his string arranger Robert Kirby, similar musicians, and speaking in a posh accent. In addition, there are two real treats for you this time around. We hear from Antony's friends, Kester Jones and Melanie Lawrence who pre-recorded their take on a beloved Nick Drake tune, and Antony himself armed with his guitar tackles another tune. These performances are wonderful and a great part of the show.My gratitude to Antony for bringing his time and thoughts to the show. We're not focusing on any of them this time around. Welcome to episode 152 of Love That Album Podcast. However, it would also be fair to say that Drake knew his way around a song – both as composer and musician. I am joined by fellow Nick-Head, Antony Rotunno. Economics is a social science. It involves theories and models and lots of math. So why is it so hard for economists to agree? And why is there often a disconnect between what economists say will happen and what actually happens in the real economy? That's something Molly has been wondering about. So we turned it into a show and called in some help. Colin Camerer, the Robert Kirby professor of behavioral economics at the California Institute of Technology, says there’s a big divide between microeconomics and macroeconomics. “It’s a little bit like geology, where we understand a lot about about rocks and mountains and how old they are, that’s micro, and earthquake forecasting, in which we know that there will be a big quake … but we don’t know if it’s gonna be next year, five years, 10 years … that’s kind of like macro.” On the show today, Camerer explains the role economists play in society and how we should be thinking about what they tell us, especially since their findings sometimes drive public policy debates. In the news fix, America is in a AI battle with China, and it’s not looking great for team USA. Plus, who is really benefiting from Zillow’s failed plan to flip thousands of homes? We’ll also hear from listeners who have mixed feelings about the outcome of the COP26 climate summit and an answer to the Make Me Smart question that has us wondering whether anything we know is true anymore. Here’s everything we talked about today:  “A New Study of Economics as a Science Says It’s Still Dismal” from Wired “What economists have gotten wrong for decades” from Vox “US has already lost AI fight to China, says ex-Pentagon software chief” from the Financial Times “Zillow Seeks to Sell 7,000 Homes for $2.8 Billion After Flipping Halt” from Bloomberg “COP26: 7 climate takeaways from Day 1 of the Glasgow talks” from CNN

It's a tough question that every investor needs to face on their own. But on this week's rant Dan looks back to the story of Robert Kirby and the coffee can portfolio, which suggests sometimes the best thing to do... is nothing at all. Then on this week's interview, Dan invites Jason Hsu onto the show. Jason is Chairman and CIO of Rayliant, an asset manager who focuses on generating alpha from investing in China and other inefficient emerging markets. Some asset managers tend to lean towards a quantitative approach... Some use a fundamental approach... Jason shares how Rayliant has blended the two into one in order to take advantage of the massive opportunity in China and other emerging markets.  During their discussion, Dan and Jason discuss the massive opportunity in China today... how the Chinese government's hands-on approach differs from the U.S. government's way of doing things... and how his firm is making it easier than ever for investors to gain exposure to emerging markets around the globe that are often overlooked. Then on the mailbag, Dan answers your questions, comments and politely-worded criticisms. But this week, there's only one big question that Dan wants to focus on... It's one that many investors – retail and institutional alike – have been wondering. Is it better to buy Bitcoin outright or are Bitcoin ETFs, like GBTC, a suitable way to gain exposure? For more than a quarter century, Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby poked fun at Mormon history, practices, culture and members themselves, including one particular member: Robert Kirby. His brand of comical commentary brought not only winces and complaints but also personal insights and even community healing. He reached out to crime victims and those who had lost loved ones. He officiated at LGBTQ weddings. Mostly, though, his musings elicited laughter. He brought a lovable irreverence to reverent things. A former police officer, he joked about being a beat cop in the Celestial Kingdom. He boasted that he could “beat up”an aging Gordon B. Hinckley. And his piece about “five kinds of Mormons” is seen as a classic of Latter-day Saint satire. Now, after thousands of columns and millions of chuckles, Kirby is calling it quits. He’s retiring. So brace yourselves, listeners, as he joins us today via Zoom from his holding cell in Herriman to talk about his career as the nation’s only religion humor newspaper columnist.

It seems fitting to initiate (compliments of www.QuoteGarden.com – edited for audio format) the conclusion of our Christmas wisdom with the thoughts of an anonymous philosopher who said, The message of Christmas is that the visible material world is bound to the invisible spiritual world. Robert Lynd, who is admittedly not a philosopher said, Were I a philosopher, I should write a philosophy of toys, showing that nothing else in life need be taken seriously, and that Christmas Day in the company of children is one of the few occasions on which men become entirely alive. Pope John 23rd added, Mankind is a great, an immense family. This is proved by what we feel in our hearts at Christmas. Carolyn Wells is a little more down to Earth with her perspective on gifts, I love the Christmas-tide, and yet, I notice this, each year I live; I always like the gifts I get, But how I love the gifts I give! She followed up on her wisdom with, ‘Tis blessed to bestow, and yet, Could we bestow the gifts we get, And keep the ones we give away, How happy were our Christmas day! P J O'Rourke lightens the discourse when he points out, There is a remarkable breakdown of taste and intelligence at Christmastime.  Mature, responsible grown men wear neck ties made of holly leaves and drink alcoholic beverages with raw egg yolks and cottage cheese in them. Our 30th President, Calvin Coolidge was again a bit more philosophical, Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. Robert Kirby is a little more practical, No matter how carefully you stored the lights last year, they will be snarled again this Christmas.

Deborah Whipp's nostalgia definitely has that ring of truth, Like snowflakes, my Christmas memories gather and dance — each beautiful, unique and too soon gone. Ella Wheeler Wilcox knows about nostalgia as well, When Christmas bells are swinging above the fields of snow, we hear sweet voices ringing from lands of long ago, and etched on vacant places are half-forgotten faces of friends we used to cherish, and loves we used to know. Vanessa Grimaldi said, Santa Claus is believing in something greater, believing in something magical; but Dennis the Menace pointed out that the real question is whether Santa Claus believes in you. Charles Dickens said, I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time. Margaret Elizabeth Sangster agrees, At Christmas-tide the open hand Scatters its bounty o'er sea and land, And none are left to grieve alone, For Love is heaven and claims its own. Erma Bombeck gets at the heart of it, There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child. Louisa May Alcott hints at the magic, Are they Christmas fairies stealing Rows of little socks to fill? Are they angels floating hither With their message of good-will? What sweet spell are these elves weaving, As like larks they chirp and sing? Neil deGrasse Tyson is here to make us smile, Santa knows Physics: Of all colors, Red Light penetrates fog best. Were there an official calling within Mormonism of "Church and Culture Lampoonist" (and there should be!), Robert Kirby would be magnifying the heck out of it! For better than thirty years, including the past twenty-one as a columnist at the Salt Lake Tribune, he has held up an affectionate but also serious mirror (and shock collar) to Mormonism, its culture, and its excesses in Utah and other places in which it dominates, especially when its members take themselves too seriously. As an insider who loves his community even as it also at times drives him crazy, Kirby has been able to find a way to give voice to thoughts that so many of us members are thinking—though we are generally less hilarious and insightful than he is—and, in so doing, bless us tremendously. It is important that we see the folly in some of our ways, whether it's how we prioritize certain ideas or practices over others, or how we globalize our way of acting and thinking as the only way to "Mormon" correctly. His work helps us laugh even as we are also caught up short, allowing us to "let in" what we might not otherwise were it presented in a more solemn or preachy manner. And, as we chew on the wisdom of the priorities and ways of being embedded in his humorous and sometimes biting observations, we are better as people and a community. In this episode, Kirby shares with Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon many things about his life, from his upbringing within the church and the many challenges he's faced in his journey and the  changes he has undergone, to his thinking about Mormonism and his role within it.
