As we prepare for 2019, we often reflect and think about the year that's gone. We think about what we achieved and didn't achieve and what we would like to do in the next year. When it comes to using technology mindfully, there are a few ways that you set goals and habits to achieve mindfulness, productivity and quality time. Here are 5 ways that you can set yourself up to use technology more mindfully in 2019:1. Take some time to observe your experiences with technology. This is the most important step as it's where you deploy awareness around your use of technology. Identify what you'd like to change in your behaviour. Do you want to spend less time browsing on the internet at work for non work related things because you find that your workload becomes heavier as the week progresses due to lack of productivity? Perhaps you'd like to not take your smartphone to the dinner table as it distracts you from quality time with your loved one. These are behaviours you should take the time to observe as it will be the foundation to understanding your relationship with technology and how to be more mindful in your use of it. 2. Write these goals down.Another important step as this will serve as a frequent reminder for what your goals are. The main reason why New Years Resolutions fail is that we forget what these are by February. Writing this down will consolidate on what's the most important to you and serve as a frequent reminder. When you're reminded of these goals - you place yourself in a position where you're most likely to succeed.3. Come up with a concrete plan of actionNow that you're written your goals down, how can you come up with a plan of action to ensure these goals can be executed? 4. Develop Mindfulness HabitsRecently, we released a course called Tap Into Mindfulness - which is a sequence of systematic exercises that aids you to not only be aware of your habits around technology but also assists you in how to create mindfulness habits around your use. There is both a student and teacher's edition and currently it's on sale for $10 and $25. 5. Have a gentle attitude towards yourselfIt takes a while to form a new habit so be kind and patient with yourself as you navigate your way through this. Stopping altogether and giving up won't form a new habit but persistence will. On each episode of the Technology For Mindfulness Podcast, Robert Plotkin, co-creator of the “Hack Your Mind” series at MIT, explores the intersection between the practice of mindfulness & the use of technology in the modern age. Ellie Burrows, CEO and co-founder of MNDFL, a NYC based meditation studio, stands out as a walking reminder to meditate. But, while she opened MNDFL in the West Village, and has already expanded to the Upper East Side and Williamsburg, Ellie’s journey towards starting MNDFL wasn’t all that straightforward. For 7 years, she worked in the film industry and didn’t quite feel the same passion her colleagues did. In 2013, she quit her job and travelled the world as a spiritual tourist. But when she returned to New York, she struggled with her meditation practice as she found it difficult to meditate in her own home. She liked group meditation but there wasn’t a non-religious place that didn’t require days-long commitment. MNDFL was thus born out of her personal needs and as it turns out, many others wanted the same things. Éowyn Ahlstrom first encountered meditation and yoga more than twenty years ago and has been practicing avidly ever since. She has made mindfulness practice a central priority in her life, attending many silent meditation retreats and yoga practice courses, as well as deeply studying both ancient and modern texts regarding these practices. Éowyn currently serves as the guiding teacher for the mindfulness communities of the Lancaster First Unitarian Church and the Gardner Unitarian Universalist Society, both in central Massachusetts. Based at Listening Wellness Center in Barre, she teaches regionally and is a part-time faculty member at the Center for Mindfulness. At Listening Wellness Center, Éowyn has developed an innovative, in-depth, nine-month program to re-integrate yoga and meditation, entitled Living Yoga, Living Mindfully. Her approach to practice and teaching is holistic, with a strong emphasis on embodiment. Prior to full-time teaching, she was on staff at the Insight Meditation Society for seven years, serving in the areas of communication and development. Silent retreat remains a priority for Éowyn, who devotes at least one month each year to that way of practice. Employees have never had a harder time staying focused on the task at hand. Distractions have become so prevalent that today only 45% of employees' time goes to primary job duties. The average employee wastes more than 8 hours of each workweek, and more than half of that time takes place on a mobile device. All this multitasking and that pile of read-but-not-responded-to emails cause employees significant stress. Unfortunately, two out of three workers say their employer is doing nothing to help them cope with stress, leading 42% of employees to report having left a position because of work-related stress. Recently, the CDC identified stress as the number one workforce health issue. Fortunately, a growing body of research on our connected lives offers fresh insights on how to live productive, calm lives. Digital Detangler combines expertise in education, software, and corporate strategy to bring cutting-edge, actionable information to people and organizations. From diagnostic services to hands-on workshops to speaking engagements, Pete Dunlap teaches the skills needed to thrive in today's information-rich landscape. This week we touch base a bit more about gun control, we talk about getting blocked on social media, and the road ahead some more. It's a very straight forward episode this week and I was late recording it and editing it, oops, I've been busy. Liza Kindred is an author, speaker & founder of "Mindful Technology". She's worked with some of the top companies fashion and tech companies like VOGUE Magazine, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Hearst Media, Time Inc, Microsoft, Cisco, Vodafone & Amazon. Liza has also appeared in the The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Financial Times, Market Watch and other publications. After spending twenty years working in fashion & technology, eventually specializing in wearable tech, Liza became alarmed by the lack of attention being paid to whether these devices were serving us... or the other way around. As a meditator for eight years, a student of Shambhala Buddhism & a reiki practitioner, she began talking about this disparity, & eventually developed the principles behind "Mindful Technology", which have been wildly well received as while nearly everyone loves technology, they also want to escape from it's grips from time to time. This is the genesis behind "Mindful Technology" the company & the #mindfultech movement. Time management author, public speaker, coach & trainer Dave Crenshaw has appeared in Time magazine, USA Today, FastCompany, the BBC News, & his courses on LinkedIn Learning have received millions of views. Crenshaw's three books, including “The Myth of Multitasking” and his newest, “The Power of Having Fun: How Meaningful Breaks Help You Get More Done”, are in stores now & can be purchased online at http://a.co/1f44cqo/. Dave is the founder of Invaluable Inc., a coaching & training corporation that has helped transform hundreds of thousands of business leaders around the world.
