Brandon Smith (No, not that Brandon Smith) and Scott Oliphint (Yes, that Scott Oliphint) take us back to Rust Auditorium in the Winter of '23 and review Dan's rousing lecture titled "Van Til Goes Pop." Scott Oliphint has had enough of the bad caricatures of Cornelius Van Til. . . but a brand new book is on the way that might change things. The Future of Reformed Apologetics gathers nine essays from the eponymous 2023 conference, and addresses the state and future of the Reformed apologetic that Van Til developed. In this first episode of our podcast companion series, Brandon McLean Smith and K. Scott Oliphint reflect on the conclusion of Scott's lecture titled "The Sensus Divinitatis." Visit Westminster Seminary Press's website and find out more about the book The Future of Reformed Apologetics, which contains the full essay "Van Til and the Sensus Divinitatis" by K. Scott Oliphint: https://wtspress.com/products/the-future-of-reformed-apologetics-collected-essays-on-applying-van-til-s-apologetic-method-to-a-new-generation. COMING SOON: Author and apologist K. Scott Oliphint joins host Brandon McLean Smith to discuss a new book, The Future of Reformed Apologetics. Addressing current debates and controversies within theological apologetics, Scott and Brandon review highlights from the eponymous 2023 conference at Westminster Theological Seminary and preview the thought provoking collection of essays from Scott, Vern Poythress, Christopher Watkin, James Anderson, Daniel Strange, Brian G. Mattson, David Owen Filson, and Nathan D. Shannon.
It is so comforting that God cares for the next generation, and they are in His mighty hands. Even when we fail, God is faithful to His covenant promises. But that doesn't mean we don't have a lot of work to do. Judges 2:10 recounts a sad story when "there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel." How could this happen? How could they forget about creation, Adam and Eve, Abraham, and the Exodus event? But it did happen. As yearly statistics warn of the religious decline in the next generation, Judges 2:10 becomes a stark warning. In this episode, Pastor Brandon discusses how to equip the next generation. For Pastor Brandon's favorite Apologetics books, see: 8th Grade - Know Why You Believe by K. Scott Oliphint 9th Grade - Why Should I Believe Christianity? by James Anderson 10th Grade - The Ultimate Proof of Creation by Jason Lisle 11th Grade - Covenantal Apologetics: Principles and Practice in Defense of Our Faith by K. Philosopher David Hume pressed the question, "Is he [God] willing to prevent evil, but not able? then he is impotent. Is he able, but not willing? then is he malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?" In this episode, Pastors Brandon and Zac open Scripture to discuss why evil exists and how God remains both "the overflowing source of all good" (Belgic Confession, Article 1) and so sovereign that "all things, in fact, come to us not by chance but by his fatherly hand" (Heidelberg Catechism, Q.27). The episode concludes with practical and pastoral advice on how to respond to suffering and persecution. There are a lot of giants in the faith that we look up to here at Rooted in Revelation; however, Scott Oliphint holds a special place among them. If you are unfamiliar with Dr. Oliphint, he is an author and professor at Westminster Philly who had the unique benefit of personally knowing and walking with the father of Presuppositional Apologetics, Cornelius Van Til. Scott talks with us about how he came to faith, about Van Til's life (including a story that you may only hear on this podcast), and about some of the recent goings-on in his own life. It was a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Oliphint- we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it!

This episode includes an important follow up point about K. Scott Oliphint. Not really, but we do talk about him, so that's something. Right? Our main topic is a David-isode (or however you guy son Slack want me to spell that). We discuss how David would rather live an unpleasant life than a life that is generally pleasant with occasional sudden bouts of unpleasantness. In short, his aversion to high variance options in life. And Jim talks about chicken a lot.Mentioned LinksLeave us a voicemail: (707) 998-8547Join us on Slack!Note that no chickens were harmed in the making of this episode art.

We're treading in deep water this week. First, Kline talks about the physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the initial creation of the invisible heavens. Kline calls that physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit “endoxation.” Next, we talk about the Holy Spirit's role in the incarnation, and the relationship between the persons of the Trinity. Finally, we distinguish what Kline is saying from what Scott Oliphint is saying. Show Notes: Give us a 5-star rating on iTunes!
