Today’s guest on We Belong Here, Jayson J. Phillips, got his start in tech only after he dropped majoring in Computer Science and Math. In school, Jayson found the coursework boring, uninteresting, and truly hated Cal 3! But when he was teaching at Scratch DJ Academy, he began managing their website only to discover that the real-world applications of tech can in fact be super creative and compelling. He went on to do agency work and continued to learn on the job. He candidly likes to say that he went to the “University of Barnes and Noble” in that he would always dedicate some of his paychecks to new books on the technical topics he was most curious about learning. Today, he is the Director of Engineering for Bootcamp Academic Platforms at 2U Inc. Our conversation today explores the importance of teaching, giving back, and encouraging others as they embark on their journey of learning to code. We acknowledge how many coding boot camps there are out there. And so Jayson's advice for those considering a boot camp is to know both: what you want to dowhat environment you learn best in And then after knowing those two things, to dive into the research and to ask all of the possible questions to hopefully find the best fit. When researching boot camps, Jayson suggests that you evaluate:their instructorshow they treat their alumni and teacher assistantsthe structure of their payment plans the prework plan that is provided to prepare for their applicationAnd to use LinkedIn as a resource to connect with alumni and instructors. Jayson goes on to give loads of advice for those curious about entering the tech industry. This episode is packed with thoughtful and encouraging words of motivation - it is NOT one to miss! Always wanted to DJ as a youngster, but never thought I had the time. I was always the person people asked to bring all my cd's when going to a party or BBQ. I haven't done any big show or events. Mostly weddings, crab feeds, reunions, and house parties. My goal is to be able to DJ on a huge stage at a festival or concert. 2 years ago I enrolled in a beginners course at Scratch DJ Academy in Los Angeles. A 5 hour drive every Saturday in the middle of the summer for a month and a half... But it was well worth it. I would like to continue to DJ kinda as a hobby for many more years. What Up Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with Adam Greenberg. Today I have the honor and privilege of speaking with Eva Magdalenski AKA DJ Evaa AKA DJ Game Changer AKA Eva Magazine. You may know her from her work at Comedy Works in Denver Colorado, her work with Chelsea Handler on the television show Chelsea Lately and E’s After Lately, or her recent album called 3 Block from Compton. She’s a graduate of the legendary Scratch DJ Academy founded by Run DMC’s Jam Master Jay (www.scratch.com), where she trained with legends like DJ Revolution of LA’s Wake Up Show. She’s unleashing her DJ skills upon the world and describes in this podcast episode her experience performing at Red Rocks for 10,000 people. She also shares why she’s passionate about supporting an organization called Girls Inc. (https://girlsinc.org/) which inspires “all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.” This organization was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War and continues working with schools and communities today to create “safe gathering places for girls to learn and to share in a sisterhood and a strong premise that each girl can develop her own capacities, self- confidence, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.” DJ Evaaa is an amazing person whose game changing mentality is certain to inspire us all today, especially if we’re struggling or reeling from life circumstances that aren’t going according to our plans. I am so happy to welcome Eva to the Get Up Nation Podcast to hear Eva share her method of remaining resilient, savoring each moment, and helping us all to develop an awareness that when life doesn’t go as planned, it might just be because something even better is making its way to the surface. This podcast episode concludes with a song by the amazing Karmic called Wake Up. I can’t stop listening to this song. Check out Karmic on Instagram at @thisiskarmic, on Facebook at @thisiskarmic, and Soundcloud, itunes, and any music platform on your mobile device that can get this song onto your next playlist. Epilepsy affects one in 26 people. Hapa is one of them. True to his nature, he doesn’t hide from his condition. Instead he uses it as a vehicle to inspire and enlighten. Kind of the same way he approaches his DJ career.  In part two of our interview, Hapa gives us some insight into how he handles obstacles, like being told he can’t go to college because of his epilepsy. And his secret for appreciating his life. He also tells us what’s up with his new label, Phil N Good, his Dash Radio show, Music Mornings, and how he continues to grow the Scratch DJ Academy. Calling Hapa a DJ doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Actually, his story is so big that we had to split the interview in to two episodes so we could bring you all of the lessons he has to share. In Part 1, we’ll dig into the beginnings of Hapa’s journey — from early inspiration from the Invisibl Scratch Picklz to becoming America’s first TV news DJ, to launching the LA campus of Scratch DJ Academy and helping build that brand as a leader in DJ culture. We get some insight into how Q-Bert is like a pro athlete and how Hapa used his outgoing nature to create opportunities for himself when he was starting out. Part 2 gets way more personal, so make sure you come back next week. Episode nine of Ambition Today finds us with the King of the DJ's, Rob Principe, the Founder & CEO of Scratch Music Group. Growing up on Long Island as a child Rob loved music, especially Run D.M.C. One day the popular music group happened to sit down next to him on a plane as he was traveling to a tennis tournament. Afterword he took a picture with the group. Fast forward years later Rob had founded Scratch Music Group and after some hustle, Rob would show this very picture to Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C. in a greenroom at the Letterman Show in New York City while pitching him his vision. Jam Master Jay was in and together they co-founded the Scratch DJ Academy. I found Rob's story to be pretty incredible. During this episode we go over the history of Scratch as well as: + What is it like meeting your childhood hero's. + How Rob and Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C. co-founded the Scratch DJ Academy. + The importance of building credibility when building your initial startup's team. + Recognizing that defining inspirational moment in your life that changes the path your on. + How Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. came to collaborate on "Walk This Way". + The moment when your startup becomes and feels real to you as the founder. + Converting your initial traction into a paid business model. + The importance of moving the chains over and over during the early years of your startup. + The future of DJ'ing and Music + How Music Festivals became so popular. Chicago’s Black Business Radio Network (All Black! All News! All You!) This segment is called CBBN Business Journals, where we interview business owners and other innovators from around the world. Joining us today will be recording artist/producer MAZEMENT. At the age of eleven Mazement learned the art of turntablism beginning with a set of Numark turntables. Within the next year he was enrolled in courses at Scratch DJ Academy (in NYC). Around that time he started making instrumentals while continuing to DJ local events. With the instrumentals came poetry. The poetry later turned into lyrics, which then were applied over the self-created instrumentals. Although Mazement started off in hip hop, he's always had a broad taste of music, from hip hop to dubstep, from rock to folk, etc. Even though he's been involved with music for over a decade, Mazement is now starting the career as an independent artist with positive knowledge of the industry and experience to support it. Find out more about Mazement at:  http://www.mazement.co/ Follow Mazement on Twitter: @Mazement Click HERE to listen to the music of Mazement on Reverbnation.
