Digital Underground's debut album, Sex Packets, is a landmark in hip-hop, blending humor, funk, and creativity into a genre-defying masterpiece. Released in 1990, the album is heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, led by the charismatic Shock G (and his alter ego, Humpty Hump). The group's playful, irreverent style is on full display, along with innovative sampling and production that set it apart from the gangsta rap dominating the era.The album's concept revolves around fictional "sex packets"—a satirical sci-fi invention offering a hallucinogenic sexual experience. This loose narrative underpins the project, showcasing Digital Underground's knack for storytelling and world-building.Standout tracks include the massive hit “The Humpty Dance,” an infectious party anthem known for its funky bassline and hilarious lyrics, and “Doowutchyalike,” a carefree track encouraging listeners to embrace self-expression. Beyond the humor, tracks like “Packet Man” and “Freaks of the Industry” showcase clever wordplay, while the production layers samples from funk legends like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins to create a rich sonic tapestry.Sex Packets is both a celebration of funk's legacy and a bold leap forward for hip-hop, cementing Digital Underground as pioneers of their time.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Peace, and humptiness forever! A mantra we should all do well to abide by. How about a little lumpy oatmeal and sort-of concept album this week?Digital Underground is just one of those groups that are okay being a little weird, a lot goofy, and very (oh so very) phonky. Shock G and dudes like Schmoovy Schmoov, Chopmaster J, and Money B all brought Parliament into hip-hop.Sex Packets is hyper horny, major vibes, and only kind of actually about sex packets, which may or may not be real. Ask NASA, but maybe NASA lies?!Check out the episode to hear Cody and Hilary break down this classic! Thanks for listening! What this delightful episode of SVU lacks in terms of coherent three-act structure or thoughtful character development is more than made up for by the absolute cavalcade of bonkers plot lines and instantly recognizable famous people. Ann-Margret justifiably won an Emmy for her turn as the perma-drunk Rita Wills. William Goddamn Atherton plays a petulant serial killer! Morgan Fairchild gets about 30 seconds of screen time! Liv and Elliot get propositioned for a threesome! There's so much fun in this episode you're going to have to just dive in and revel in the madness. This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 3, Fluffer, which originally aired on October 2, 2012 and was directed by Fred Goss and written by J.J. Philbin and Kim Rosenstock. Here’s a quick recap of the episode:Jess shares with the loft mates that she’s having non-committal sex with Sam, but realizes she needs more to get in the mood. When Schmidt forces the boys to help, Nick ends up serving as her “Emotional Fluffer”. Meanwhile, Schmidt tries to convince a woman he met at a club that he’s a political candidate’s son, “Tugg Romney”. Winston is struggling in this episode as he and Shelby are in a rut.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Mitt Romney (& Mormonism) - Schmidt pretends to be a son of politician, Mitt Romney who is also of Mormon faith. Kanye West - Schmidt wears a belt with whales on it that he says Kanye West wore. Additional Pop Culture References such as:The Walking Dead - Nick mentioned Jess was a “big girl” and could watch The Walking Dead alone. The Walking Dead is an American zombie post-apocalyptic horror television series based on the comic book series of the same name.[Jimmy] Fallon - Schmidt pretends that if he were to call Kanye West before bed, he would ask him if he was watching Fallon. James (Jimmy) Fallon is an American comedian, actor, television host, singer, writer, and producer, known for his work in television as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and is currently the host of late-night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Notebook - Jess mentions that she and Sam had a bad makeout session and just laid there like the old people in The Notebook. The Notebook is a romantic drama movie based on a book of the same name where an elderly man comforts his wife with dementia and remembers their love story; the elderly couple is often shown as laying together quietly.Adele - Winston mentions that men and women who are just friends should never do anything concerning Adele. Adele is an English singer and songwriter known for her melodic ballads. She is one of the world’s best-selling music artists with sales of over 120 million records.Taylor Swift - Cece noticed that Schmidt was going through a “Taylor Swift range of emotions”. Taylor Swift is an American singer and songwriter known for her narrative and emotional lyricism, which often takes inspiration from her personal life. She has won 11 Grammys (3 for Album of the Year) and 23 Billboard music awards.[Law & Order] SVU - Shelby asks Winston if he wants to come upstairs and watch SVU. SVU is short for Law & Order: SVU, which is a television series following the Special Victims Unit, a specially trained squad of detectives in the N.Y.P.D., who investigate sexually related crimes. This show is a spinoff of Law & Order and has now aired 492 episodes, surpassing the original show which only had 456 episodes.[Everybody Loves] Raymond - When Winston asks if Shelby’s sure she wants to watch SVU, she mentions she’s too tired to watch Raymond. Raymond is short for the television series, Everybody Loves Raymond, which is a sitcom about the experiences of Ray Barone and his family.Moonwalking - Nick moonwalks into his room after hearing Jess play the mixtape he made for her. Moonwalking is a dance move in which the dancer glides backwards but their body actions suggest forward motion. It became popular following Michael Jackson's moonwalk during the performance of his song, "Billie Jean”. Nick’s Sexy Mixtape Songs - Nick provides Jess with a mixtape to play to help get her in the mood. Songs on that mixtape that are either listed or played in the episode are:"The Humpty Dance" - "The Humpty Dance" is a song by the rap group Digital Underground from their debut album Sex Packets. Released as the second single from the album in January 1990, it reached No. 11 on the pop chart, No. 7 on the R&B chart, and No. 1 on the Billboard Rap Singles chart."You Can Call Me Al" - Written by American singer and songwriter Paul Simon, the lyrics to “You Can Call Me Al” follow an individual seemingly experiencing a midlife crisis."LAY YOU DOWN" - The song is performed by Spank and is used in many television shows of the 2010s and beyond. We also cover Schmidt’s description of how he wants to be Kanye’s friend as the “Schmidtism” in this episode. Our “not” for “In the 2020s” was how Schmidt discussed race in this episode when talking to Winston and Cece but our “yes” for “In the 2020s” was how Nick set his own boundaries for his friendship with Jess. Additionally, we also discussed the careers of David Walton (Sam), and Taryn Southern (Megan). Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we did not discuss in the podcast: Rebecca Delgado Smith (Courtney, one of the Kappas), Anisha Adusumilli (April, another Kappa), and Tarina Pouncy (the waitress). We also talk about how Nick’s speech to Jess at the restaurant incorporated aspects of the Animaniacs in the way he said “Hello Nurse”. You can watch a clip of the Animaniacs version here and the rebooted version that inverts the gender norms here. We also talk about David Walton’s robes which you can find here. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Olympics - When Schmidt is preparing to pretend to be a Romney, he talks about how the family had a Romney Olympics every summer which he felt would be similar to the real Olympics. The Olympic Games are an international sports competition featuring summer and winter sports where thousands of athletes from around the world compete and represent their countries. They are held every 4 years with either a Summer or Winter Olympics every 2 years. That’s All She Wrote - When Jess is considering breaking up with Sam because she needs more out of a relationship, she says the phrase “and that’s all she wrote”. This is an American idiom used to indicate when a person’s plan has come to a sudden stop and that there is nothing else to be said about the matter. While the origin of the phrase is unknown, most attribute it to the Dear John letters sent during World War II. There have also been several songs written about this phrase. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika and an 8.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 4!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
HipHop has suffered quite a few losses in the past year with the deaths of MF Doom, Black Rob, DMX, and, most recently, Gregory Jacobs, aka Shock G, aka MC Blowfish, aka Pianoman, aka Rackadelic, aka Humpty Hump. In part 1 of this two-part episode J (@HipHopTaliban), Black Cloud (@AndreCole), and the Professor (@abjrphd) look at the legacy of Shock G and Digital Underground through the lens of the group’s classic first album, Sex Packets, examining the way Shock G used his reverence for Parliament-Funkadelic to craft a classic PFunk homage. Along the way, the fellas reach back and listen to some of the original funk and rock joints that set HipHop’s foundation! And the Professor gives a preview of his forthcoming book, For the Culture: HipHop and the Fight for Social Justice.
Part 2 of the Get Off My Lawn look at Shock G’s legacy and the Digital Underground’s first homage to the funk — Sex Packets!
This album is dedicated to: Dr. Earl Cook, founder of the Cook Institute and inventor of the new safe-sex discovery, G.S.R.A., (genetic suppression relief antidotes) or, more commonly called, SEX PACKETS. We feel that sex packets will prove to be a major breakthrough alternative to high-risk sex. In 1987 Dr. Cook joined forces with Gregory E. Jacobs (a member of the Underground Biomedical Sex-Relations Organization) to further develop the concept and to create a more accessible version. By early 1989 they had adapted the ideal packet, which is now being sold on the streets and even offers the consumer a choice of sexual preference. Digital Underground has painted a musical picture, successfully capturing the atmosphere, mode, and culture surrounding sex packets and the people who use them. When listening to the slow-tempo, deeply erotic and almost sleazy sound of this mix, you will actually feel as if you were submerged deep within the dreamy realm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . of a sex packet. Digital Underground - A Tribute to the Early Days Dionne Warwick - Deja Vu (REz Edit) Cardi B - I Like It (DJ Platurn Edit) Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (Casual Connection Rework) Modern Romance - Can U Move (The Reflex Revision) The Bar-Kays - Freakshow on the Dance Floor (Pete Le Freq) Rick James - Give It to Me Baby (Rens Worbier & Melon Edit) Prince - 1999 (Pete Le Freq Freakin Rework) Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (SanFranDisko) Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies (Pete's Little Lyin' Rework) Freddie Mercury and Giorgio Moroder - Love Kills (SanFranDisko) Nightlife Unlimited - Peaches & Prunes (Reflex Revision) Duran Duran - Girls on Film (Pete's Just the Acetate Re-Do) ABC - Poison Arrow (Pete Le Freq Freakin Rework) D Train - You're the One for Me (Pete Le Freq Refreq) TB - The Smurf (Smart Edit) Phreek - The Weekend (Petes Multitrack Phreekout) Michael Jackson - Get on the Floor (Pete's Multitrack Freakout)

We open up the podcast with a fitting tribute to DMX (maybe only marginally fitting). As an aside Zach would also like to use this space since we won't talk about it on the podcast to also give a tribute to the passing of Shock G from Digital Underground, as the Sex Packets album was his first "Parental Advisory" cassette as a youth. After a cringe-worthy DMX vs. Shakespeare discussion we immediately get into our clinical topic: Routines How do you settle on the way you do a procedure? I suspect 10 different dentists would do the same procedure 10 different ways... why? And how do you decide on what you do? Well that's what we talk about. Crowns, operative..and much much more. 3 dentists, 3 completely different systems. Fully digital, semi-digital, analog. There's room for everyone. Thanks for listening and we'll see you next week.

My guest this week is B Rich, aka Brendan Richmond. Brendan is a tight MC based in Kingston, Ontario. We’re bandmates in the group Shark Tank, and we’ve been friends since 2004. He talks about growing up in a small town of 500, and his early hip-hop ventures in rural Canada. We discuss the viral success of his song Out For A Rip, and the cross-country adventures that followed. He tells me about his recent bout of writer’s block, and how he’s trying to kick his writing back into high gear. Mike Riley’s art this week is an homage to Digital Underground’s Sex Packets. This episode is hosted by Splicetoday.com.
