Digital Underground's debut album, Sex Packets, is a landmark in hip-hop, blending humor, funk, and creativity into a genre-defying masterpiece. Released in 1990, the album is heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, led by the charismatic Shock G (and his alter ego, Humpty Hump). The group's playful, irreverent style is on full display, along with innovative sampling and production that set it apart from the gangsta rap dominating the era.The album's concept revolves around fictional "sex packets"—a satirical sci-fi invention offering a hallucinogenic sexual experience. This loose narrative underpins the project, showcasing Digital Underground's knack for storytelling and world-building.Standout tracks include the massive hit “The Humpty Dance,” an infectious party anthem known for its funky bassline and hilarious lyrics, and “Doowutchyalike,” a carefree track encouraging listeners to embrace self-expression. Beyond the humor, tracks like “Packet Man” and “Freaks of the Industry” showcase clever wordplay, while the production layers samples from funk legends like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins to create a rich sonic tapestry.Sex Packets is both a celebration of funk's legacy and a bold leap forward for hip-hop, cementing Digital Underground as pioneers of their time.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Money B is a rapper and member of Digital Underground and Raw Fusion. Moving from Philadelphia to Oakland, his childhood was shaped by his father's membership in the Black Panther Party. Once he met Digital Underground founder Shock G, Money B became an integral part of the group and their first hit "Doowhatchyalike." Famously, DU would introduce the world to 2pac as a member and Money B played a large role in his debut album. The DU family tree also includes Saafir (RIP), Mystic, 4rax of the Mekanix, and many others. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introdution 01:24 “Freaks of the Industry” 03:55 New single with Guapdad 4000 06:03 Growing up in Philly & Oakland 09:07 Money B's father in the Black Panthers 14:20 Getting into hip-hop 23:30 Shock G starting Digital Underground 28:18 Shock G came to Oakland while pimpin' 31:21 Money B & DJ Fuze join the group 33:29 “Doowutchyalike”, Tommy Boy records 41:41 Different styles of hip-hop 48:04 “The Humpty Dance” 50:39 Shock G & Mac Dre 55:30 “We're All In The Same Gang” 58:52 2pac joins Digital Underground 1:04:54 2pacalypse Now, “Brenda's Got A Baby” 1:09:50 2pac's roots in Oakland 1:15:19 “I Get Around” 1:17:36 2pac going to Death Row 1:28:49 Saafir 1:39:22 Digital Underground's last album 1:44:38 Young Hump 1:54:40 Shock G's passing --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Nick explains why there was no Friday episode last week, and chats about his upcoming "Nick's Pix" film series, before he welcomes filmmaker/writer/journalist/host Amy Guth to the podcast. Amy is live from New York at the CineFest Film Festival to talk about her Elvis movie that is competing at that fest, the usual and hilarious problems with Zoom meetings, what it's like to be stuck in an airplane bathroom for 16 hours, and how the Humpty Dance inspires her to this very day. Then, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to talk about being sick, how your body responds to stress, and how working for Johnny B just might kill you. They also taste test more snacks from The Baltics, and learn about how The Grateful Dead saved the 1992 Olympics for the Lithuanian basketball team. [EP240]

Lesane Crooks was born to Afeni Shakur (née Alice Faye Williams), a member of the Black Panther Party, and she renamed him Tupac Amaru Shakur—after Peruvian revolutionary Túpac Amaru II—when he was a year old. He spent much of his childhood on the move with his family, which in 1986 settled in Baltimore, Maryland, where Shakur attended the elite Baltimore School for the Arts. He distinguished himself as a student, both creatively and academically, but his family relocated to Marin City, California, before he could graduate. There Shakur took to the streets, selling drugs and becoming involved in the gang culture that would one day provide material for his rap lyrics. In 1990 he joined Digital Underground, an Oakland-based rap group that had scored a Billboard Top 40 hit with the novelty single “The Humpty Dance.” Shakur performed on two Digital Underground albums in 1991, This Is an EP Release and Sons of the P, before his solo debut, 2Pacalypse Now, later that year. Get the scoop on how all that came together and what it was like for them to see everyone after so much time apart. Plus, with it being March, they also talk about MTV Spring Break from Daytona Beach. From 1989 to 1991, MTV taped special episodes of Club MTV from Daytona on the beach during all the Spring Break festivities, so those three have all the tea! From the Club MTV dancers' Spring Break bus crash that derailed an early attempt by MTV to get into reality tv pre-Real World to fun Digital Underground and MC Hammer stories, and more. Scotty boy is on the road in the desert. That means we called in Steve Guile once more for quality show reinforcement. Steve is going to try to equal his effort last time out where he impressed someone with his depth of understanding about the space time continuum. Drinking takes place on this show, but it's nothing to fear. Luke likes to take the edge off to reduce the anxiety. Jeff Beck died, but Luke mixed him up with Jeff Buckley who died swimming in the Mississippi. That reminds Mike of the guy who recently survived 15-20 hours wading in the Gulf of Mexico after he got hammered and fell off a cruise ship. Luke says there is no way that someone can fall off a cruise ship because they have 10 foot walls. Steve says Christ never found his way inside of him despite a heavy dose of him in his childhood. Steve also grew up in Hawaii where they played on volcanic dirt. If you've never run the bases at your local professional baseball park, Steve says those infield dirts are slippery as hell. Have you seen the new film The Menu? Steve knows a bit about the restaurant it's set in. High pressure restaurants are hell. Mike recalls his days working at the Stillwater Grill in 2001 with his pal Morgan. Great memories! Also, Foghorn Leghorn is not Yosemite Sam. The Humpty Dance will always put a pep in your step. Steve and Mike are big fans and they say farewell to Humpty from the Humpty Dance, better known as Shock G, who died last year. It brings up Mike's memory of not getting busy in a Burger King bathroom even though he worked at a couple of them. We hit up your emails of course! Eric comes out with the tipping point as he is on the brink with the amount of tipping opportunities at even the most banal of eateries. The fellas are with the food service workers all day. Tip a lot and tip often. Those tips make a difference. Where do you stand on the battle between Jersey Mike's, Penn Station and Subway? Luke says the word complicated during the restaurant discussion which created a spark in Mike's mind to play Ain't No Blacks On The TV Screen from the Mad TV days. It's an example of a parody song being vastly superior to the original, which was Chris Rock's No Sex. Who is opening for Bill Cosby for his new comedy tour this summer? We HAVE to know. Who would stoop that low?!. Sean's email is about the options on HBO Max. Which one will you choose? We close this show with a classic from Jeff Beck called Greensleeves. If any of this nonsense strikes you, please email the show isitsafepod@gmail.com to improve the overall quality of future conversations. We love you all!
Matt talks about his favorite party songs to get the party started and includes the last song to end the event. Important Links View the complete list of best party songs. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript Welcome to the 84th episode of the Wedding Songs Podcast. I am Matt Campbell and today I am going to have one of my favorite, and I know everyone else's favorite, topics. Best party songs. These may not be the best songs to get everyone out on the dance floor (although I am going to include those also), but these could also be background songs as well. And, also songs that are trending right now. If you prefer to read the list or listen to the list, you can do so on our website MyWeddingSongs.com. While you are there make sure to sign up for our monthly newsletter. In it, we tell you about all the new songs released in the prior month and also great trending songs and forgotten hits you can play on your wedding day. This episode is going to be a little bit different, I am not going to include song lyrics because I am just going to go thru the 200 songs just to categorize those by genre and a couple of events as well (I will get to that in just a second). So, speaking of starting off, I am going to start off with 37 songs I think could really get everyone out on the dance floor. They are party songs and ones that you want to make sure you at least have in your music library. The first one is “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston, “Yeah” by Usher, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA, the great Disco song. “Fergalicious” by Fergie, “Get Low” by Lil Jon, and the East Side Boyz featuring Ying Yang Twins, and “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan. This one is exploding recently because it is in a car commercial. “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris. This is a great song to really get the party started and get everybody excited. Next is “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas and “September” by Earth Wind and Fire. One of the great dance songs of all time. “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz and the newer song, “About Damn Time” by Lizzo. “Shut Up And Dance” by WALK THE MOON. There are a few Michael Jackson songs we can have on the list, but it seems like “Billie Jean” is on everybody's playlist. “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins with the right crowd, and “C'Mon ‘N Ride It (The Train)” by Quad City DJ's, which came out in the '90s and will get everybody doing the train around the dance floor. Next is “The Humpty Dance” by Digital Underground who recently lost their lead singer. “Get Down On It” by Kool and The Gang and “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot. “Hey Ya!” by Outkast, and “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks is the first Country song on the list, which is a sing-along song you can have on your list. “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Kesha, “No Hands” by Waka Flocka Flame and Roscoe Dash featuring Wale, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, and of course the “Cha-Cha Slide” by Mr. C if you want to have a group dance song, along with the next son “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid. “Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex and “Hot In Herre” by Nelly. One of the great party songs, “Shots” by LMFAO, and the second Country song, “Fishin' In The Dark” by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Listen to the lyrics to make sure they are Wedding appropriate if you are going to play it at a wedding and your Wedding couple is OK with it. “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, “Time Of Our Lives” by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo. Another group dance song , “Wobble” by V.I.C., “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, and “Shout” by The Isley Brothers or by Otis Day. It is up to you which version you prefer. It is just a great group dance song you can have. “All The Small Things” by Blink-182. And finally, “Boogie Shoes” by KC And The Sunshine Band. So that is just to get things started off. Next up let us talk about 10 songs for slow dance songs starting off with “Tennessee Whiskey” ...
Helen and Gavin chat about Tootsie, Halloween Ends, Smile, House of the Dragon, and The Rings of Power, and it's Week 52 from the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Best Songs Ever, numbers 245 to 241; Sabotage by The Beastie Boys, Summer Babe (Winter Version) by Pavement, Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles, Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground.

Episode 844: Humpty Dance
Episode 844: Humpty Dance
As we continue to Humpty Dance our way into season 6, your favorite musical tripod has decided to do something a little different and add a new themed episode into the rotation of episodes you've grown to know and love. Covers, covers, covers, and we're not talking karaoke. You love em', you hate em', and so do we. It seems like covers go back as far as your favorite songs do. Artists have been covering one another's work since the very beginning, and like most things in life, some do it way better than others. So every time one of these episodes rolls around we're going to be taking a particular song done by an artist and then talking about one of the more famous covers that another band has done of that particular song. We're anticipating that the highlight of each of these episodes will be Michelle realizing that a particular song that she knows and loves was in fact a cover of another band's work. This week we're taking a listen to a band that has been around since your grandparents were in diapers. Okay, maybe not that long, but they've been around for a really long god damn time, and that may or may not be a good thing. Did you guess The Rolling Stones? If not, shame on you. Once upon a time, they recorded this little god damn jam that you may or may not know called "Sympathy For The Devil", and some years later Axl Rose had a giant raging music boner, and decided that he and whatever rotating lineup of band members he had in Guns N' Roses at the time would grab that song by the balls and give it the Axl twist and that's exactly what they did. But did they do a good job? That's what we're here to talk about. But this is where the talking stops, go listen for yourself, and then come back and listen to our banter. I bet you won't regret any of those decisions. It's season 6, episode 3 of your favorite son's, vice principal's sister's, favorite music podcast. LET'S GO!!! Keep up with all of the music we talk about in each episode by listening to the Infectious Groove Podcast Companion Songs playlist, exclusively on Spotify. Episode 101 is an ode to 1990. This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade. Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day. The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby. It wasn't just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn't stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix. Who doesn't watch all of Goodfellas every time it's on TV? Doesn't everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone? Air Jordan V's were on every kid's feet. The Simpson's were on every kid's TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid's bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
Much like the music Ronald "Money B" Brooks makes, his upbringing was far from the norm. A Philadephia transplant whose parents moved him to the Bay Area to work for The Black Panthers in the early 1970s, Money B quickly learned what having a strong community meant. He took that knowledge and applied it to his networking and worked his way from breakdancer, to DJ, to MC, to superstar. Come join us on a journey through Money B's life and find out what it was like to be a part of one of the most successful rap groups to come out of the Bay Area.Come be a part of the Fresh Era movement - www.stupid-fly.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode we take a break from the hot-button topics of this season to enjoy some lighthearted banter and hot takes in the point/counterpoint style with guests Mike Vandemark and Scott Hatfield. Below are all of the questions that Scott asked in the podcast. Pick 2-3 from each category to discuss with your group. What are the benefits of talking about things like this? What do we learn about one another? Is it a waste of time? How often do you get together with friends to just be together and have fun? Could you benefit from doing it more often? How so? How does all of this play into our life and ministry? Does any of this have any benefit for ministry or daily living for Christ? Sports: Is golf a sport or a game? Which of the big 3 sports would you prefer to watch live and in person? The college football championship should just be called the SEC championship, true or false? Kobe or Michael Jordan? MJ or Lebron? 1996 Wildcats vs. 1991 UNLV Runnin' Rebels, who's better? Movies: The Matrix - overrated or underrated? If you had to pick between Steven Segal and Craig T. Nelson to play the lead role in every movie, which one would you pick? Dumb and Dumber or Tommy Boy? Shawshank Redemption or Braveheart? Better actor: Martin Lawrence or Eddie Murphy? Music: Better Rock Band? AC/DC or Led Zeppelin? True or False, Rapper's Delight is a terrible rap song? You're on a deserted island and you can listen to only Journey or only Bon Jovi, what do you choose? You are doing Karaoke and you can choose between performing Bohemian Rhapsody or the Humpty Dance? Who wins in a fight, Tony Bennett or Willie Nelson?
