Anna Saltzman was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. When it comes to high school sports, she tends to think about the memory of playing in front of her community. She works hard on and off the court and field to play at the level she is at right now, and seeing her hard work pay off means a lot. Her teammates and her have the same goal: to be the best versions of themselves as players. When they step out onto the volleyball court or soccer field, they know their community is on their side. Seeing familiar faces in the crowd supporting her team is a feeling she hopes to never forget. Anna competes in volleyball and soccer. She is involved in FFA, FCA, National Honor Society, and Silver Cord. Outside school and sports, she volunteers at the Gilbert Lutheran Church, Food at First, the athletic concession stand, and the AAU Volleyball Organization. Agriculture to Anna is around everyone, it is just a matter of finding it. She grew up in town with only one pet, so she didn't have much experience around the typical "agriculture" until she found her love for it. Agriculture became a large focus point for her very quickly, as she wanted to go to work with her father every day. This made agriculture all the more important to her, and she hoped to better food security, sustainability, and conservation for animals in her future path. Anna plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in agricultural studies. She plans on emphasizing in animal science, ag sales, and ag communications. With that degree, she hopes to secure a job in the animal vaccine sales industry with a focus in livestock.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Saela Steege was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court, field, and course. She loves high school sports for many reasons, as it teaches her about the power of a positive attitude, hard work, humility, self-motivation, discipline, and the importance of steadfast faith through all of it. Mostly, she is grateful for the relationships she has made and the life lessons learned along the way. Saela competes in basketball, softball, cross country, and track and field. She is involved in Cougar Leadership, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Wellness, FFA, National Honor Society, SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco), choir, Silver Cord (an organization that promotes volunteerism), and 4-H. These organizations have allowed Saela the privilege to volunteer at numerous events, including Pumpkin Fest, Hometown Christmas, peer tutoring, and supporting her local blood drive. Her athletic teams provide a multitude of services to help the youth programs, like helping to maintain the youth softball/baseball fields, referee youth basketball games, and attending youth practices for positive peer influence. Saela is heavily involved in her church and enjoys helping the elderly by raking leaves & shoveling snow. She also assists with her Vacation Bible School program. She participates in local outreach by volunteering at fundraising events such as the annual Spuds 'n More dinner. Through 4-H, she serves community members at an omelet brunch. Saela was also honored this past summer by being awarded Miss Fredericksburg 2024. In this position, she serves as a representative for the town of Fredericksburg and has enjoyed visiting local nursing homes, being involved with community youth events, and promoting her hometown. Agriculture to Saela means family, love, pride, hard work, responsible stewardship of land, a passion to provide the best possible future for generations to come, and a lifestyle built on integrity. She hopes to inspire other women in agriculture. Saela plans to attend a 4-year University to major in agribusiness and minor in agronomy. She is hopeful to continue her work on her family farm.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I wasn't surprised to hear King Gizzard released another album (is it Wednesday already?) but more along the lines of what will it be this time. My introduction to this band was The Silver Cord, an album I considered as nothing but fodder and many fans would say either I'm not getting it or this was the worst entry to the band. Either way I have continued with this band and can say this record was a MUCH better effort. WIRED founder Kevin Kelly explains why progress often looks like dystopia to the untrained eye. Imagine that tomorrow, the world magically got 1% better. Nobody would notice. But if the world got 1% better every year, the "compounding" effect would be very noticeable — in the same way that compounding grows a bank account. When technology solves a problem, it creates new problems. The solution is not less technology but better technology. Kevin Kelly of WIRED magazine calls this incremental progress toward a better world "protopia." Protopia is a direction, not a destiny. ------------------------------------------------------------------- This video is part of The Progress Issue, a Big Think and Freethink special collaboration. In this inaugural special issue we set out to explore progress — how it happens, how we nurture it and how we stifle it, and what changes are required in how we approach our most serious problems to ensure greater and more equitable progress for all. It's time for a return to optimism. ----------------------------------------------------------------- About Kevin Kelly Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at WIRED magazine. He co-founded WIRED in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor for its first seven years. His newest book is The Inevitable, a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He is founder of the popular Cool Tools website, which has been reviewing tools daily for 20 years. Melbourne band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard don't just make a LOT of records (they've released 25 since they started 11 years ago); each one comes with a different experiment at the heart of it. There's the thrash metal record; the collaborative jazz record; the microtonal record; one made exclusively on acoustic instruments; one that plays on an infinity loop. And on and on.  Their latest (if you're quick enough), doesn't feature guitars at all – The Silver Cord is the rock band's synth only album, which we discuss a little on episode 125 of MC, with band leader Stuart Mackenzie. Along with what he remembers from those previous 24 albums, the band's origins on the Melbourne scene, and how on earth King Gizzard will come to end. If it ever will.  Give the show a follow on Instagram and TikTok at @midnightchatspod. This episode was recored in October 2023. This episode originally aired March, 24th on the Onion Unlimited Podcast. It was another classic chat between Chris and Daniel Torridon on the nature of God and of spirit. We discuss the mythological motif of the "Silver Cord" (Ecclesiastes 12:5-7) or "Silver Thread" (Greco-Roman Moirai), which is said to bind the divine spirit to the material body in life and is "loosed" or "cut" at the moment of our death. Daniel speaks to me in memoriam for his departed friend Pieter and we ask the question: Is there an in-between place between the living and eternity?

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - "Theia (Extended Mix)" from the 2023 album The Silver Cord on KGLW The Australian psych sextet King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard might be making KEXP history with this 20-minute long track, which I'm pretty sure is the longest Song of the Day offering to date! The single comes from their 25th overall LP (and second of 2023), The Silver Cord, which finds the experimental group delving into electronic music. “We come at electronic music from an amateur angle,” frontman Stu Mackenzie says in a press release. “I play the Juno synthesizer like a guitar, I don't really know how to play it. But I wanted to be at peace with being the rock band pretending to know how to use modular synthesizers. We're in uncharted waters, we're further out to sea, but leaning into it, and we got to a spot where we were really happy with what came out.” As for today's Song of the Day, Mackenzie declares, "It's for the Gizz-heads," adding, "I love Donna Summer's records with Giorgio Moroder, and I'd never listen to the short versions now – I'm one of those people who wants to hear the whole thing. We're testing the boundaries of people's attention spans when it comes to listening to music, perhaps – but I'm heavily interested in destroying such concepts." Life in 2053: AI, Moore's Law, and Crypto with Futurist Kevin Kelly

For the Summer of 2023, a dozen futurists talk about what life will be like for humans in 30 to 50 years. Each guest is asked to paint a picture of the changes that we will experience between now and 2053 or 2073. Then they are asked what mistakes we are making today that the people of 2073 will look back at in disbelief. The goal of these episodes is to spark the imagination of listeners about the future we have the ability to create. In this episode, futurist Kevin Kelly paints a picture of what life might look like in 2053. He discusses the implications to the world if Moore's Law slows down, how AI will become a fundamental utility to how we work and live similar to how transformative electricity has been for humans, and what would happen if “crypto wins” and the internet, finance, and other elements of our economy become decentralized. Kevin believes generative AI tools like Chat GPT will function as “interns” that each of us will get to train and use as tools to help with work and manage our lives. Kevin wraps up the interview by talking about how some of our current behaviors – like eating the flesh of animals, having parents choose the names of their children at birth, and our ideas around intelligence and how the brain works - will be looked at in 50 years with a sense of disbelief.Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. He co-founded Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor for its first seven years. His newest book is Excellent Advice for Living, a book of 450 modern proverbs for good living. I first learned about Pique through my friends Dr. Peter Attia and Kevin Rose, and now Pique's fermented pu'er tea crystals have become my daily go-to. I often kickstart my mornings with their Pu'er Green Tea and Pu'er Black Tea, and I alternate between the two. This rare type of naturally fermented tea is more concentrated in polyphenol antioxidants than any other tea—it supports focus and mental clarity, healthy digestion, metabolism, and a healthy immune system. Their crystals are cold extracted, using only wild-harvested leaves from 250-year-old tea trees. Plus, they triple toxin screen for heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic mold—contaminants commonly found in tea. I also use the crystals for iced tea, which saves a ton of time and hassle. Pique is offering up to 20% off of their pu'er teas, exclusively to my listeners. To sweeten the deal even more, you'll get a free sampler pack with 6 of their best-selling teas. Simply visit PiqueLife.com/Tim, and the discount will be automatically applied. They also offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, so your purchase is completely risk-free.
