043 - When Absence Hurts More Than Presence: A Daughter's Story with Mary Fields

Our Dead Dads

Mary Fields grew up without a relationship with her father. In fact, she hadn't seen him face-to-face in nearly 20 years when a sheriff arrived at her door to inform her that he had died. What followed was a surreal journey into the life — and the death — of a man she barely knew. With no one else to handle the aftermath, Mary found herself responsible for his estate, including navigating his hoarded trailer, dealing with legal red tape, and making difficult decisions about his remains. In this deeply honest conversation, Mary opens up about what it means to grieve someone who wasn't really there, and how the absence of a relationship can still leave behind an overwhelming emotional burden. She describes the confusion, anger, guilt, and even compassion that surfaced during this unexpected chapter. Through it all, Mary's resilience shines — and her voice gives power to a kind of grief that often goes unspoken. We also talk about therapy, breaking down emotional walls, and finding meaning in the act of honoring someone who may not have deserved it. Mary's story is equal parts heartbreaking and empowering — a testament to what it means to be human, to hurt, and to heal.MARY'S LINKS:FACEBOOK (BUSINESS): https://www.facebook.com/merryassistantFACEBOOK (PERSONAL): https://www.facebook.com/nononopenopeINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/merryassistant/GIVE THE SHOW A 5-STAR RATING ON APPLE PODCASTS! She was the United States' first Black woman (and 2nd woman) to run a star route for the postal system. There are many legendary figures who emerged from the American Wild West. In this all new episode we explore the life of the lesser known, though no less incredible, Mary Fields, who has come to be known as Stagecoach Mary. Born enslaved, Mary was emancipated around the age of 33 after the American Civil War. Eventually she moved west to the Montana Territory. There she worked alongside the Ursuline nuns and Jesuits at St. Peter's mission until she was dismissed for an incident involving drawn firearms. Mary was a mold breaker and was unafraid to push against the expectations of others. She drank, smoke cigars, carried firearms, and sometimes wore men's clothing. She was also someone of great generosity and won the admiration of many people in Cascade, Montana. She was an unstoppable force, and at the age of 63, became history's first African American Star Route Carrier for the US Postal Service. This was a dangerous job, but despite the threat of predators, bandits, rugged terrain, and harsh winters, Mary and her mule Moses never missed a day in her eight year tenure as a Star Route Carrier. If the whether became impassable for her stagecoach, Mary would deliver the mail by snowshoe, carrying the sacks over her shoulders. Mary became a legend in her own time as stories of this gun carrying, cigar smoking, hard liquor drinking woman who seemed to break down every barrier thrown her way, earned Mary her place in history. Come hear how the life of Mary Fields become the legend of Stagecoach Mary.

This week's topic was inspired by the most current movie being called out for colorism, The Harder They Fall, because the light-skinned, mixed-race actress Zazie Beetz was cast to play Stagecoach Mary (Mary Fields), a very dark-skinned woman who was the first woman to deliver U.S. mail. The more I learn about Mary Fields, the more obvious it becomes that the colorism in The Harder They Fall is blatant disrespect of this woman's legacy. This portrayal is betrayal. Fashion Show, Yung Baby Tate, & Netflix's casting of Mary Fields, better known as Stagecoach Mary, in their upcoming film “The Harder They Fall.” Being “size inclusive” in fashion, body shaming of black female celebrities and public figures, colorism in television and movies, and the overall exclusion of actual plus size bodies in the entertainment world are topics that trigger lots of emotion.   In the ever changing landscape of pop culture, plus size bodies are still very underrepresented. While the emergence of performers such as lizzo and actresses such as Wunmi Mosaku are awesome, there is still a lack of true and authentic representation when it comes to mainstream entertainment. It seems as though the powers that be would rather have a smaller actress don a fat suit to play a plus size person, rather than cast an actual plus size person for the role. (I.E. Sarah Paulson portrays Linda Tripp in the FX series "Impeachment: American Crime Story.") What is the reasoning behind this? Do producers and creators believe that casting actual plus size people in roles written for us, would be a form of rewarding “bad behavior?” The “bad behavior” being, existing while fat of course. Join Toni & Danni this week as they break down these topics and many more!  Stay up to date on The Thickening and more at www.Thecurvyfashionista.com Follow Our Team on Social Media! Stagecoach Mary was a woman on her own in the world, who did most of her hard living after the age of 40. She lived with nuns in the daytime, drank whiskey with men in saloons at night. She was the first black woman to drive a wagon for the US postal service. Tough as she was, she was also known for the verdant lushness of her well-tended gardens.  Mary was a woman of dualities, and yet, also limitless complexities. Over time, her legend has outshined the facts of her life. This is the life and legend of Mary Fields, the toughest woman to ever call the west her home. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Mary Fields, who has done a ton of healing in her 70’s eating a meat-based diet. This goes to show that it’s never too late to start the healing process. In this interview we discuss the following in chronological order:Tell us a little about yourself and why you started your carnivore journey.Dietary changes in the beginning and what do you eat?Weight loss on a carnivore diet.Thoughts on the carnivore diet after doing it for 1 year. What have you healed?Oxalate dumping and AFib.Bloodwork on the carnivore diet. What about your family? Are they carnivore?Do you think the carnivore diet is for everyone?Recommendations for older people if they decide to start the carnivore diet.-------- Mary's BiographyFrom about the age of ten I became self-conscious about my body. I had two small framed skinny sisters. Compared to them I was considered to be "fat." This set off a lifetime of feast-or-famine eating disorder and an obsession with my appearance. I had serious digestive issues, food and pollen allergies, eczema, chronic systemic pain, depression, Candida, chronic fatigue, either severe constipation or diarrhea, cold sores, and several episodes of colds and bronchitis a year. These symptoms continued and worsened as I aged. Later I developed hypoglycemia, hypertension and an irregular heart. In my early twenties I developed an interest in nutrition and began to search out any information I could find about the human body and how to use food and supplements to achieve health. That was over fifty years ago. I have probably tried every conceivable diet at least once in an effort to lose weight and look like my sisters. As I aged my emphasis began to shift from an obsession about being skinny to achieving optimal health. At age seventy-eight I am still searching and learning. Due to aggressive food allergies, over the years my protocol was whittled down to gluten free grains, some green vegetables, almonds, walnuts and meat. I ate very little meat because I believed it would cause acidity setting up an environment in my body for cancer. As I made dietary and other lifestyle changes over the years my health improved but I was still plagued with allergies, digestive issues, eczema, mild depression, and systemic pain. I was on medication for hypertension and began having episodes of AFib. At the suggestion of my daughter, I began to follow the carnivore story. I believed anyone who only ate meat was insane and would end up with serious nutritional deficiencies leading to disease and death but I was desperate and ready to consider just about anything. As I listened to physicians, scientist and other nutritional specialists along with countless ordinary folks tell their story of their carnivore cure I became convinced it was worth a try. February 2, 2020 I began my carnivore journey. A little over a year later I am no longer suffering from many of the symptoms that I had lived with all of my life. Allergies are not gone but symptoms are greatly improved. I no longer suffer from eczema, hypoglycemia, hypertension, irregular heart, depression or digestive issues. I sleep well and most days have good sustained energy. Systemic pain is greatly reduced. I have lost 18 pounds and gone from a size 16 to a size 12, however losing weight is no longer on my radar. I have learned that my body will find its perfect weight as it continues to heal.Carnivore is not a cure-all but it is a powerful way to eat and live that heals the body and restores health especially when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices such as adequate hydration, managing stress, daily exercise and proper rest.If you want to get in touch with Mary, email me at hello@nutritionwithjudy.com -------- CHECK OUT MY BOOK, CARNIVORE CURE: https://amzn.to/37R4lOY--------ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: 1) Nutrition with Judy BLOG: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/blog/ 2) Nutrition with Judy Resources: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/resources-------- FIND ME:

If John Henry has a folk song this woman needs one too! Introducing Stagecoach Mary a.k.a. Mary Fields a.k.a. Black Mary.At 60-years old she was the fastest person - man or woman - in the state of Montana to hitch a team of six horses to a coach. She was the first Black woman to earn a US Postal Service contract. She drove that team of horses for eight years, through rough and wild territories of the West. In the winter, the snow was so deep that she’d leave the horses behind and carry-on with the mail on her back. She never missed a day. Not a single day. She carried a shotgun to demand respect. She once got kicked out of a Catholic convent for using it. When the law banned women from drinking in saloons, she got an exception from the mayor. “I fight through rainstorms...snowstorms ...risk hurricanes and tornadoes. I like to be rough. I like to be rowdy. I also like to be loving ...caring." We are the daughters of hard and soft. ...that edge hitting a soft breeze. We are electric. The storm of posibility. Like the clap of Juneteenth in the middle of global meltdown. Like the swirl and swagger of Mary Fields. "I do bold and exciting things." she confessed. Cheers foremother. Cheers!(She needs her own folk song.)Join the 21 Day Black History Bootcamp at https://bit.ly/blackhistorybootcamp to receive specially curated emails with inspiring words, survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each featured legendary Black woman.Disclaimer: We do not own the rights to the music or speech excerpt played during this broadcast. This week, Sara brings us the story of Stagecoach Mary! Born Mary Fields (and a slave), Mary made a name for herself first by working her way up the Mississippi until she worked for 15 years at a convent. After drawing her gun on a janitor who slapped her across the face, she was fired and made her way west to accept a job as a "Star Carrier" for the USPS. There, she was known to drink heavily, fight off wolves, defeat bandits, & was absolutely beloved by everyone in her town. Broads You Should Know is the podcast about amazing and noteworthy women from history, hosted by Sam Eggers, Sara Gorsky, & Justin Xavier. Short, bite sized and fun, like any good snack its best when shared with friends, so tell your friends about it. Today's Black history Blitz is about the hard-drinking, shotgun carrying wild west legend known as Stagecoach Mary. The first African American Woman to Join the US mail. Mary Fields, later to be known as Stage Coach Mary was born in Hickman County Tennessee at around 1832 Liberated from enslavement at the end of the American Civil war, Fields headed North working on Riverboats till she eventually found permanent work in an Ohio convent. Her gruff style and constant cursing raised eyebrows in the quiet convent, and though she faithfully served the nuns, news of her habitual drinking, smoking, shooting guns and wearing men’s clothing. Caused upheaval. Things came to a head when Fields and the convent’s male janitor drew guns on each other during a heated argument, it was the final straw and she was fired. Fields love of hard drinking and gunfights eventually paid off when in 1895 she won a contract from the postal service to become a Star route carrier making her the first African American woman to do so Cathy Williams, we salute you! Survival is not easy!  The aftermath of abuse often causes the survivor to recoil and become destructive to themselves and others.  However, if one heals properly, a healthy life of thriving is very possible.  The rate of abuse, child abuse, domestic violence and sex trafficking, effects 1 out of 4 females and 1 out of 6 males.  So you can be sure that in a room with 10 people, 2-3 of them are survivors or current victims.  While interviewing the cast and crew of Black Girls Die Too:  The Backpage Murders, I found the statistic to be true.  Tonight, we have three of the actors who have endured and/or witnessed abuse.   Lamarc Bishop, Rhoda Ross-Williams and Mary Fields, a few of the cast will be with me to tel their stories tonight at 8pm.
