Video Rewind: John Cleese: A cheerful guide to creativity

Design Better Podcast

Hi everyone! We recently surveyed our audience and learned that many of you would like to see more video. So, we're kicking off a new run of video episodes, beginning with our interview featuring John Cleese—actor, writer, comedian, and author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. You can watch the interview on our Substack, or on Youtube. Enjoy! Original intro The Ministry of Silly Walks. The Cheese Shop. French Taunting. If you haven't seen any of these Monty Python sketches before, do us a favor and go watch one or two of them. You'll discover—or re-discover—why our guest for this episode is a creative comic legend.  John Cleese starred in and co-wrote the award-winning series Fawlty Towers, was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay of A Fish Called Wanda, and even has a species of lemur named after him (Cleese's wooly lemur, Avahi cleesei). He's also an expert on the creative process, and so if you're looking for a new framework to level-up your own workflow, his book Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide is a great resource. We talk with John about his new book, and also about creative collaboration in the midst of friction, how to be comfortable with ambiguity, and creating boundaries of space and time to get in a creative mode. We also get to ask him a question that's been bugging us ever since we first watched Monty Python and The Holy Grail. These days, we can all use a little more laughter in our lives. We hope our interview with John sparks some joy, and leaves you with some new creative tools. Thanks for listening. Bio John Cleese is an English actor, comedian, writer, and film producer. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s, he co-founded Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films, And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. In the mid-1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and the last three Shrek films. He is also the author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. *** This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for June 20th               Publish Date:  June 20th    Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Thursday, June 20th and Happy 81st Birthday to Beach Boys member Brian Wilson. ***06.20.24 – BIRTHDAY – BRIAN WILSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Will Richardson's Votes Hold if Cobb's Commission Map is Overturned? Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises 'Wild Wild West in Color' Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo   Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss brown eggs.   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: If Cobb's Commission Map is Thrown Out, Do Richardson's Votes Stand? Jerica Richardson's pivotal votes on Cobb County's Board of Commissioners have been contentious due to questions surrounding her eligibility. Richardson's district was redrawn by the Democratic majority using Georgia's home rule powers, a move challenged as unconstitutional by Republicans. This legal uncertainty casts doubt on the validity of her votes and decisions, including approving a transit tax referendum and a housing development. While some legal experts suggest her actions might be protected under the de facto doctrine, which upholds acts performed by officials later found to be improperly elected, the issue remains unresolved. Future court decisions could impact the legality of past votes, potentially leading to significant repercussions for Cobb County's governance. STORY 2: Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a $159 million budget for the 2024-25 school year, featuring significant teacher raises while maintaining a flat millage rate of 17.97. The budget allocates $9 million towards salary increases and benefits for staff, reflecting an average 5.3% raise for all teaching personnel. Additional funding includes $150,000 for Science of Reading learning programs, $722,000 for academic support staff, and $225,000 for insurance, maintenance, and transportation expenses. Board members expressed satisfaction with prioritizing employee compensation amidst rising living costs, emphasizing their commitment to supporting staff and maintaining fiscal responsibility. STORY 3: ‘Wild Wild West in Color' Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth's legacy endures through cultural celebration and education. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back  Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Smyrna Kroger Celebrates $1 Million Facelift In Smyrna, the Kroger store on South Cobb Drive celebrated a $1 million renovation aimed at enhancing customer experience. The upgrades included new sections like the Kitchen Place kitchenware department and improvements to the bakery, seafood, meat departments, and Murray's Cheese Shop. The store also expanded its Starbucks area to accommodate more customers efficiently. Store leader Kexian Jones noted a significant increase in customer traffic and positive feedback since the renovations began last August. Local residents, like Akshay Mohan and Angia Chen, praised the updated store for its improved selection and amenities. Smyrna Councilwoman Susan Wilkinson highlighted Kroger's investment in the community, emphasizing the store's role as a meeting place and its partnerships with local schools. The event featured speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and opportunities for attendees to explore the renovated store and enjoy free samples from various brands. STORY 5: Marietta School Board Curbs Students' Cell phone Use The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy to restrict cellphone, smartwatch, and social media use among middle-grade students at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta Middle School. Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being. We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 6   And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss brown eggs.   ***LEAH INTERVIEW***   We'll have closing comments after this.   Break: MARIETTA THEATRE HANDS ON HARD BODY   Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Many cheese shops are loosely defined as restaurants if they serve food and provide seating to dine in. Conversely, some wine bars and restaurants have a cheese-centric menu with an area for retail sales. These hybrid establishments often combine retail sales of cheese with a dining experience, blurring the line between traditional cheese shop and restaurant. In this episode, we speak with Jen Lopez from Forever Cheese and Catilin Adler from Bedford Cheese Shop in NYC to talk about Cheesemonger Education and ways they are working with cheesemongers nationally and in independent shops.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. While cow's milk is the most popular in the U.S., goat's milk is the most popular milk worldwide. LaClare Family Creamery and Cheese Shop raises a variety of dairy goat breeds and uses the milk for items in their shop. What's unique is that they have 700 goats on site so people can see what a goat looks like, learn more about how that cheese is made, and hopefully bring it home or try it on one of the café sandwiches. Gloria Regan from LaClare Family Creamery shares what the LaClare Creamery has to offer, the benefits of consuming dairy goat milk, and their events that attendees can partake in. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on the podcast, I talk to my old pal Sheena Moore, founder of Sheena's Pickles, an artisan brand of fermented goodies making waves all over Austin right now. Sheena and I have known each other for years since working together back in the old world as tour guides for Austin Eats Food Tours. Sheena is one of those smart, humble, incredibly funny people who makes you feel comfortable in your own skin when you're around her. The idea of Sheena's Pickles has been around for years — a fact I didn't realize when we talked — but only since the pandemic has the brand reached its current heights. Hers is a study in how to make a side-hustle really thrive. When she first conceived of the business, she decided to get her MBA from the prestigious Macomb School of Business at the University of Texas to see if she could learn enough to make the idea feasible. Not only is she a lovely human, one of my very favorites, but she's a great example of how uncanny and powerful acting in your life toward the manifestation of your dreams can be. When she's not pickling to keep up with her sold-out product-line at Antonelli's Cheese Shop, she works with rockstar academic Dr. Daina Ramey Berry, chair of UT's History Department, and professor of African American Diaspora Studies. Sheena and I talk about what it's like to grow up as an identical twin, how the corporate world nearly crushed her soul, and then we taste a bunch of pickles and cheese. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking with Teasel Muir-Harmony, curator of the Project Apollo collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, about the history of the Apollo missions and the role politics has had in setting space policy. In her new book, “OPERATION MOONGLOW: A Political History of Project Apollo,” Teasel explores how and why the moon landing became one of the most decisive geopolitical events of the 20th century. In the wake of the Soviet Union's pioneering launch of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961, and a humiliating defeat at the Bay of Pigs days later, President John F. Kennedy proposed Project Apollo as a solution to restoring America's tarnished geopolitical standing. With Cold War tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States approaching an all-time high, Kennedy argued that ramping up the space program would inspire global confidence in American excellence -- and might even persuade people in developing countries to pick American “freedom” over Soviet “tyranny.”In addition to her duties at the Smithsonian, Teasel teaches at Georgetown University. She is the author of "Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects" and is also a contributor to the television series Apollo's Moon Shot. She lives in Washington, DC.To learn more about OPERATION MOONGLOW, including how to can get your copy, visit https://www.basicbooks.com/titles/teasel-muir-harmony/operation-moonglow/9781541699878/You can follow Teasel on Twitter (https://twitter.com/teaselmuir).Join the show recording every Thursday at 8pm ET by leaving a voicemail at www.SpaceRadioShow.com.Support the show on Patreon.Follow on Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube.Justin G, Matthew K, Chris L, Barbara K, Duncan M, Corey D, Justin Z, Neuterdude, Nate H, Andrew F, Naila, Aaron S, Scott M, Rob H, David B, Frank T, Tim R, Alex P, Tom Van S, Mark R, Alan B, Craig B, Richard K, Steve P, Dave L, Chuck C, Stephen M, Maureen R, Stace J, Neil P, lothian53, COTFM, Stephen S, Ken L, Debra S, Alberto M, Matt C, Ron S, Joe R, Jeremy K, David P, Norm Z, Ulfert B, Robert B, Fr. This week I had the privilege of chatting with Dr. Brittany Kamai about her research into how to improve gravitational wave detectors – as well as how we can each generate gravitational waves. We also discussed how she became a driving force behind the #ShutDownSTEM movement. Brittany is Native Hawaiian, an astrophysicist, athlete, author, mentor, and advocate for creating a better world. She is on a mission to help enhance our fundamental understanding of the universe and does so by weaving together every aspect of who she is.As an experimentalist, Brittany's research focuses on improving gravitational wave detectors with novel technology ideas. She is advancing studies of seismic and acoustic metamaterials on a path to improve the ground-based detectors, namely LIGO and Cosmic Explorer. Tonight I chatted with Moiya McTier, Ph.D. student from Columbia University. Moiya is the host of the podcast, Exolore, in which she "explores fictional worlds by building them with a panel of expert guests." Additionally, regular viewers of the Weekly Space Hangout will recognize Moiya as one of their regular journalists.Moiya grew up in the middle of the woods of rural Pennsylvania without running water. From there, she went to Harvard University where she became the first person in the school's long history to study both astrophysics and folklore & mythology. Now she's pursuing her PhD in astronomy at Columbia University in New York City, studying how the Milky Way's structure influences exoplanet populations.Outside of research, Moiya has written a science fiction novel, designed an exhibit for the New York Hall of Science, and given more than 100 talks and performances about science. I am so pleased to bring you his episode featuring Barrel and Fork, a lovely and unique fine dining establishment located near the heart of Cornelius. Owners Jason Tuton and Sarah Conrad join me for a great conversation about the inspiration behind Barrel and Fork. My wife and I were actually able to take the time out of our schedules to enjoy an evening at Barrel and Fork and experience the place first-hand prior to recording this episode. It was a rare date night for us that we thoroughly enjoyed. Listen in to the episode to learn more about this special restaurant, and our amazing experience. From the Barrel and Fork website:“Vintage seems cliché and trendy. Modern is overpoured and less attractive every day. We embrace the past and fight for the future, indulging in the whimsical times when bourbon and wine on a Tuesday meant a good start to the weekend. When incredible food stops short of being pretentious and out of touch. Welcome home…” https://barrelandfork.com/20517 N.
