Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's The Penguin, Disney Plus's Agatha All Along, Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, and Netflix's Miss Night & Day. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh parse through all the lessons they learned by sorting through Netflix's latest data dump of consumer viewing on the platform over the first six months of 2024. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. All three gave the nod to Hulu this month thanks to their successful run at this year's Emmy Awards and their exciting fall tv line up, including English Teacher, Only Murders in the Building, and The Secret Lives of Mormon Rights. New Series Spotlight – This month, they are reviewing English Teacher. The series was created by Bryan Jordan Alvarez, who you may know from his popular YouTube videos or his supporting turn on the Will & Grace reboot a few years back. Here, he plays Evan Marquez, a queer, neurotic, and ever-aggrieved English teacher at a high school outside Austin, Texas. The series also stars Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher. Five of the eight episodes of season one have already aired on FX. You can also stream the series on Hulu or, if you have the Disney bundle you can also watch it directly on Disney Plus.

Three big series up for review this week – two from the US and one from the UK. A Very Royal Scandal (Prime Video, 3 episodes) Another production recreating the infamous Prince Andrew BBC interview with Emily Maitlis. This time Michael Sheen is Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson is Emily Maitlis. The Penguin (Binge/Foxtel 8 episodes) Andrew loved this straight away, but it took James until episode 2 to get on board. Find out why Andrew was an early adopter and what two things changed James' mind. Colin Farrell is amazing, but we point out a scene stealer to watch out for. English Teacher (Disney+, 8 episodes) The surprise package of the week is this US sitcom about a gay high school teacher in Austin, Texas. It's not hard to fall in love with this and its cast led by Brian Jordan Alvarez (who also created the series) and the very funny Stephanie Koenig. Tough pick for a Show of the Week. Andrew and James chose different programs. What was the unlucky series that missed out?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
FX cleaned up at the 2024 Emmy Awards, but can they keep the winning streak alive? Could the engine behind Hulu's premium content even be on track to surpass HBO as the de facto home of prestige TV? We're looking at both sides of that equation with a review of the new FX comedy English Teacher and a deep dive into David Zaslav's latest swerve with Max (coming soon to a basic cable package near you!). But wait! There's more: The ABC Presidential Debate brought in big ratings across all the news networks, but did viewers punish CNN for hosting the infamous first debate? Speaking of that Cable News Network: The channel's new leadership continues to undo the legacy of Zaslav's first pick, Chris Licht. That means Brian Stelter's back, baby! The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon becomes the final nail in the coffin for Friday night Late Night, with all the major shows down to 4 new episodes a week. With ratings in a free fall across all the networks what will the future of Late Night look like? (Maybe it's more of an After Midnight style affair.) ———

When you see Stephanie Koenig on the screen, you might do a double take. You might have seen her before on the TV series The Flight Attendant or The Offer. But with her role in the upcoming Apple+ series Lessons in Chemistry (debuting October 13), you'll soon not just recognize the face but the name as well. Indeed, Stephanie is a star on the rise and defeating the odds of being a working actress in Hollywood (you all know how much I love it when people defy odds). But the real thing that made me ask her to be on the show: she is a Michigan native (both parents work in the automotive industry) who is earthy, self-deprecating and funny. And she doesn't have a self-important bone in her body. She's a girl's girl who I think you'll enjoy getting to know—before everyone else does.
Chlor-Alkali experts George Eisenhauer, Bernard Law and Stephanie Koenig talk to Lauren Williamson, VP, Product, about the long-term fundamentals of the caustic soda market, including: Policy impact on battery demand and what that means for the North American supply chain Where European opportunities lie among continued optimisation processes and net zero targets How Northeast Asia's role will change with diminished reinvestment in export capability, and against a backdrop of Southeast Asia's growing demand This podcast is delivered by Argus' chlor-alkali experts using data and insight from the Argus Caustic Soda Analytics service. Dhanish Kalayarasu, talks to leading chlor-alkali experts George Eisenhauer, Stephanie Koenig, and Bernard Law, about the Argus Chlor-Alkali Outlook: • Market direction and underlying trends over the next 12 months across the Americas, Europe and Asia • Major supply and demand changes on the horizon • The impact of high inflation rates on demand for caustic soda and chlorine • Insights to help subscribers make better business decisions This podcast is delivered by Argus' chlor-alkali experts using data and insight from the Argus Chlor-Alkali Outlook. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Stephanie Koenig, the writer-director-producer-star & editor of the feature film A Spy Movie, an action movie parody which recently dropped on You Tube. She talks about coming up with the idea while hanging with friends on a bench in Marina Del Rey, mining her Mission Impossible: Fallout obsession for tropes to skewer, doing her own stunts and how she strikes a balance between scripted moments and improv. She also talks about the no-budget Do-Everything-Yourself process of making A Spy Movie--and previous projects like The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo and Stupid Idiots--and how creating her own stuff has empowered her, opened doors in Hollywood and even made auditioning more fun. Other topics include: acting in the upcoming Paramount + series The Offer about the making of The Godfather, her love of snow, being recognized at Gay Pride from her web videos and that time she and her Spy Movie collaborators Bryan Jordan Alvarez, Chris Riggi and Michael Strassner took way too many buckets of fried chicken onto a cramped tour boat in Alaska. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YziovxOn6kE

We used to let the big networks tell us what to watch. At 7:00pm we watched this, at 8:00pm, that. They told us when to laugh and what should make us feel sad or stressed out. But welcome to 2019, where with platforms like Youtube and Instagram there’s no limit to what can be created and shared on a massive scale. So what effect does that have on a creator, when it’s no longer the networks who evaluate your worth, but the viewer? I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Stephanie Koenig, an actress living in LA who uses these platforms to make people laugh while she works her way to the big screen. This episode is proof that as long as you’re consistently connecting to your big picture goals, even just 1 hour a day is enough to make that shit happen. By the way, when you’re finished listening to this episode, drop everything and watch every single second of Stephanie & Brian’s content, much of which is referenced in this episode: Stupid Idiots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ho-GN_kK4A The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYXQzlKXzpk Stephanie Koenig on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/KellynStephanieHumor Brian Jordan Alvarez on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/bjalvo Instagram: http://instagram.com/stephaniekoenig
Stephanie Koenig is an actress and writer, known for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Into the Storm (2014) and Highland Park (2013). Paramount Television and Anonymous Content have acquired rights to Stupid Idiots, a comedy web series written, directed by and starring Stephanie Koenig, to develop as a TV series. Koenig (PopTV’s Swedish Dicks) is set to write the adaptation and star in the potential TV series, described as a (trying-to-get-out-of-the-) workplace comedy about two underachievers who consistently fail upwards. Koenig and Brian Jordan Alvarez star in the web version, which launched earlier this year. imdb.com/name/nm3649584/ Grandmother's Gold : https://youtu.be/vHRRL2t9LKk STUPID IDIOTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ho-GN_kK4A
