Embracing Your Season: Raising Littles and Understanding Teens with Paige Clingenpeel
Are you a parent of a special needs child? Do you struggle with finding community and connection? On this week's episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has Julie Hornok on the show. Julie is the co-founder of Labeled and Loved which is a non-profit organization that is passionate about empowering women to find grace, acceptance and strength in the midst of even the toughest circumstances life has to offer. Humbled by parenting kids with extra needs, she works to build community for those who feel alone and spread her message of hope to anyone who will listen.Paige's Takeaways:We can focus on what our kids can do. Flip the script and walk through the positives of their day to day so we also have that mindshift. If we focus on the negatives just think about how discouraging that can be to us as parents but also to our children. We can still grieve the things that they can't do.Stop caring about what other parents think. Don't focus on the opinions of others around you, instead focus on what is best for your own child at that moment.Find Community. We cannot be doing this alone. IT doesn't matter if you have special needs kids or able-bodied kids. We can allow other trusted people to speak into our kids' lives. Be intentional about who we are allowing into our lives and our kids lives.Paige ClingenpeelQuestions About the Podcast? In this episode we discuss our pilot evaluation of Family Safeguarding, part of the Strengthening Families Protecting Children (SFPC) programme commissioned by the Department for Education. SFPC aims to support local authorities to introduce one of three models of practice into their own area. These models hope to enable more children to stay in safe and stable family environments, so that fewer children need to be taken into care. This was the first report we published as part of SFPC in June 2021. Family Safeguarding was launched in Cambridgeshire in February 2020 just before the COVID-19 lockdown. The initiative is a multi-disciplinary approach to safeguarding, with adult specialist practitioners in mental health, substance misuse and domestic abuse working alongside children's social workers. Contributors: Presenter Nimal Jude, our Head of Practice Development, talks to the report's research lead Hannah Collyer. Later in the podcast Nimal catches up with Sam Howlett, Head of Family Safeguarding at Cambridgeshire County Council, to hear about her experience of being part of the Family Safeguarding pilot. In this episode we'll be discussing the recent pilot evaluation of No Wrong Door, part of the Strengthening Families Protecting Children (SFPC) programme and commissioned by the Department for Education. SFPC aims to support local authorities to introduce one of three models of practice into their own area. No Wrong Door was developed by North Yorkshire County Council. The initiative takes a multidisciplinary approach, with a team from several different sectors providing support to young people in or on the edge of care, through a range of services, outreach and accommodation options. The model was originally designed to support young people aged 12 - 25. Our pilot evaluation was of No Wrong Door in Middlesbrough, who launched their Futures for Families, to support children aged 11 - 18 using the No Wrong Door model. If you were asked to prioritize the 10 subject topics among 37 subjects for news coverage, what would you consider the most preferred topics? A recent poll of 115,000 people was made, and they were asked to rank the top 10 topics in order according to their preference. They were given 37 subjects for possible radio and magazine coverage. They were asked which one is the most important and should be given priority. The first most important topic was strengthening families. Among the other top 10 chosen were listed the topics on grandparenting, values and school, parenting toddlers, school aged children - adolescents, male Christian leadership, abortion, public policy, and family devotions. It was interesting to know what 115,000 people wanted to learn more about in the 90s. We may be living in a world of change, where old values and old truths are being challenged. Research is bringing out that there's still a great interest in knowing more about the traditional values in what makes strong families. Throughout the years I have seen families in many parts of this world drawn very close together through some of the difficult hardships and losses. I have heard them say, "In our village/community/country/church, we are concerned and care about our families and friends." A recent speaker I heard stated how important it is to remain connected with your family. And that when one shuns your family, your problems do not disappear. John Bradshaw once stated, "If you still resent your parents, you have never grown up." Strong families can provide stability for our nation. These strong families are truly one of life's most precious gifts. Families are vital in our civilization, and they are here to stay. What is your favorite subject topic? SHOWNOTES: • So ours is called Washington State University Extension and Oregon State University Extension, Kansas Extension. It just depends on the state that you're at and how they put the words together, but they all have the word extension. Sometimes they're called Cooperative Extension, depending on the area and what they're called, but they all drive back the land grant university, in part Washington. Our land grant university is Washington State. So as extension people, employees are faculty at WSU, but located in a county rather than on the campus at home. (3:30)• A grant to teach people who have the potential symptoms or have the symptoms for the probability of having diabetes later in life, so how do we help people prevent that? So we can talk about prevention signs and things that work that way. And so I would encourage FCS teachers to reach out to their local extension office and find out what is it that you offer that you could share with my students and career-wise or subject matter wise. (8:52)• Another program that we have that's across the state in a lot of areas is called Strengthening Families. And that it's kind of a parenting program, but it works with the kids and it works with the families. When we bring them together, the kids go into a session, the adults going to the session, then they come back together for a third session together, I'm learning about why we have rules, why we're parents and what we're trying to do, what your responsibilities are. And as a contributing member of his family, as a child, and so it's helping families develop some new parenting patterns to help them make their family successful, particularly if they've had some issues. (13:59)• I got my genetic counseling report back and it says I don't have any of the genetic markers that is of high risk... Yeah, I know, right? It's thumbs up. But, that doesn't indicate that I am within that high risk category, so it's truly fascinating, and being able to see what science and technology are doing with that is going to be impacting our lives, and I can see the true value of extension programs and being able to incorporate those into your personal life.(29:56)• I'm really not very text-savvy, but I'll tell you one that I've discovered in the last year on my computer. It's not a program, it's a tab that's called Read Aloud. And you know when you write papers and you write your progress report and everything all sounds good, and then you read it over the second time you say, Oh my gosh, how did I miss this or, that sounds really weird, but Read Aloud, you can turn on on your computer and it reads back to you what you've written. Thoughts inspired from the study of Come, Follow Me: Feb 10 - 16 Book of Mormon: 2 Nephi 6-10Do you find yourself feeling invisible or unheard? Are you craving more closeness and connection with someone you love? It is the month of love and today we are going to share some simple tools with you that you can use in any relationship to feel more seen, more heard, and more connected. We are going to focus in on 2 Nephi chapter 7 verse 4 and a little bit from verses 5,7-9. We will learn:1. How to set yourself up to be seen and heard, it’s all about the weather & temperature.2. How to wake from weariness, it's all about timing -the sooner the better. Today we are learning from the words of Isaiah as he speaks messianically. Nephi thought Isaiah's words were important enough to have his brother Jacob read to the people of Nephi and also important enough to engrave on plates for you and I. We think they are pretty inspiring too. We are taught to emulate the Savior, to learn from His example. These verses are packed with ways we can strive to be like Him and strengthen our relationships. We would love to have you read along with us. Kids need anchors and families and connection. With so many in the world hungry for those things, something as simple as a printed photo is a way you can nurture and feed your children's souls. Motherhood and childhood go quickly. Looking at a photo and taking a moment to reminisce is an antidote to the daily pushes and pulls and stresses and anxieties of life. Not only is that magic... it's science! Today Vanessa is joined by developmental psychologist and University of Utah professor, Dr. Trisha Weeks to discuss the research conducted to prove printed photos strengthen families. Vanessa knew there was power in putting photographs in the hands of her children, but we wanted to test the science behind it! Our study (comprised of focus groups and over 15,000 survey respondents!) illustrated how physical photographs build a sense of identity, increase self esteem, lower behavioral issues, and enhance the connection between family. Looking at photos and conversing about the events captured is a shared experience - something you simply can’t gain scrolling through pictures on your phone by yourself. Documenting our family’s story makes us feel like good moms… and it turns out we really are doing good for our children. It’s science! Check out the rest of our research at chatbooks.com/printed-photo-report

For better or for worse we have all been imprinted by our Fathers or by the absence of a Father in our life. This Sunday we will look to see what God's purpose for Fathers are and how we are meant to respond to His call to Fatherhood.
Having a strong family seems elusive in our world today. But the call God is to grow up into the fullness of his Son in all facets of our lives, including the home. Strong families are founded upon a robust walk with Jesus.
The TSC world famous & beloved Dena Hook, Vice President of Support Services at the TS Alliance comes on the podcast to discuss, well, a lot. This is Part 1 of our conversation and Dena walks us through her history right up until she started working at the TS Alliance in 2007. Dena shares her experience advocating for her son with severe dyslexia in the early years of special needs legislation and how that inspired & launched her career in advocacy. She describes that it was a time when being "in the building" for a kid with special needs, was about as much support as was given. Dena was Technical Assistant Coordinator for the National Parent Training and Information Center (PACER) for over 6 years training educational advocates throughout the country. She worked with the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) during the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1997. A published author through Incentive Publication, she wrote: “Success with IEPs” and “An IEP Writing Tool” for teachers and school administrators. During her time as CEO of Family and Children First, she ran Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Early Childhood Program, Truancy Mediation, and Strengthening Families a Mental Health and Drug Addiction Program for Marion County in Ohio. She is certified as Special Education Mediator through the Juvenile Justice Center of Atlanta and as a Truancy Mediator through the Ohio Supreme Court. On a personal level, Dena also talks about leaving her job at PACER & working with OSEP to return to Ohio to aid her mother and how despite leaving an esteemed position, she was able to use her experience as a parent, advocate & then administrator to rise once again to leadership at Family & Children First in her home state of Ohio. Buckle up, there's a lot here and more on the way! (music credit: https://www.purple-planet.com)
In this episode I will discuss what we can do to strengthen our families by developing a strong family narrative.

A pillar of Stonebrook's ministry is “strengthening families”. Marriage, parenting, being a kid, being a member of a household, we want these relationships to be strong and thriving. The Gospel is the power source for the kind of strength we are after. Lets find out how together as we continue our Pillars series and walking through Ephesians together.

Like many of you, I came to “know” Kirk Cameron in the 80’s, watching the hit sitcom “Growing Pains” — but these days, Kirk is using his influence to strengthen families who are raising their kids in a digital age. In a social media-centered world, the smart phone has become a cultural rite of passage for kids. But is that rite all wrong? How can this generation of parents blaze a new trail to equip their kids to thrive in an ever-changing digital environment while steering clear of the dangers that lurk nearby? Join in the conversation and be encouraged as Kirk Cameron and I discuss this very important topic. ‘Kirk Cameron: CONNECT’ Focuses on Strengthening Families in the Digital Age Now available on Digital, On Demand and DVD Actor & Father of Six Offers Real Help for Parenting Kids in a Social Media World Nashville, TN – June 5, 2018 – Kirk Cameron, a passionate advocate of marriages and families, has created what may be his most exciting and critical project to date, one that aims to enlighten and encourage parents in today’s digitally driven environment. In a social media-centered world, the smart phone has become a cultural rite of passage for kids. But is that rite all wrong? How can this generation of parents blaze a new trail to equip their kids to thrive in an ever-changing digital environment while steering clear of the dangers that lurk nearby? With six teenagers, Cameron and his wife Chelsea, fully understand this dilemma. So, he went to the experts, and what he learned will enlighten, challenge and equip parents. In an online world that creates an illusion of reality and “friends” through social media, apps and “followers,” Kirk Cameron: CONNECT pulls back the curtain to the benefits, dangers and boundaries that every parent, teacher, pastor or youth leader should consider while monitoring and utilizing technology in our children’s lives. As Cameron reminds parents, “The heart of the battle is really the battle of the heart.” Notable guests in this compelling documentary include Dr. Ian Armstrong (Neurosurgeon), Kathy Koch, Ph.D. (founder of Celebrate Kids, Inc.), Tim Woda (founder of uKnowKids), Pastor Ken Graves (Calvary Chapel, Bangor, Maine), and Mark Gregston (founder of Heartlight). Also featured are parents and young adults who share their personal stories regarding the life-changing impact of technology in their own lives. “God-fearing parents can find confidence and guidance when it comes to the challenges of parenting in our technology-driven world, knowing that God has fully equipped us for the sacred calling as a parent,” said Cameron. “We have resources to prepare our children as they learn their purpose and identity, and responsibly use technology to understand family, friends, God and the world around them.” Kirk Cameron: CONNECT, which premiered as a limited theatrical event this past spring, is now available on DVD from CamFam Studios and Provident Films Kirk Cameron is best known for his memorable role of “Mike Seaver”, a cultural icon of the 80’s, with his mullet hairstyle, cool glasses, and wisecracking comebacks on ABC’s “Growing Pains.” Since then, he’s appeared in numerous television and movie productions, including the Left Behind series, Monumental, and Fireproof—the marriage-centered film that became the #1 grossing inspirational film of the year. He’s been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, Dr. Oz, Nightline, Fox News, and CNN and currently travels the country speaking on his brand new marriage and parenting tour, Living Room Reset that offers a night of worship, teaching, and heartfelt conversation about what matters most to husbands, wives, and parents. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidistjohn/support

Dr. Hawkins speaks about prevention efforts of the past, which were untested. These efforts sounded good at the time, but were not effective and some even caused more harm than good. Use good ideas, but test them. Bonding provides the motivation for youth to live up to the standards. Dr. Hawkins says that street gangs understand bonding better than we do. He speaks about the power of bonding and how this protective factor makes youth more likely to embrace our message. We can promote healthy development of young people. We have over 70 tested effective preventive programs now to reduce and prevent alcohol and drug addiction. Use the resources and tools that are tested and proven. We will not solve the opioid epidemic unless we invest seriously in prevention. Dr. Hawkins talks about proven programs that reduce opioid use and how implementing them in our communities will address the opioid epidemic.
