Here, we bring you an episode from Lawyers Weekly's sister brand, HR Leader, in which we unpack the headline hurdles facing the human resources departments in professional services businesses, such as law firms, and how HR can and should manage those issues. Host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Swaab head of people and culture Angela Sharpe about her work at the Sydney-based mid-sized firm, what motivates her about working in the HR space, navigating talent shortages and increased competition for top candidates, the need to think more creatively about identifying ideal talent, the ever-present mental health challenges in such firms, and the role of HR teams in improving workplace wellness. Sharpe also delves into the myriad legislative changes that HR teams have to grapple with, including the recently introduced Right to Disconnect, the corresponding duties that HR teams must undertake, the emergence of new technologies and how best HR teams must adapt, striking the right balance between streamlining processes and ensuring the human touch doesn't get lost, and reflects on whether it has ever been more difficult to be in HR in a professional services environment. Across Australia, corporate entities have taken a stance on the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament. But what happens if a lawyer in a firm has a different view from their employer? On this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy welcomes back Swaab partner Michael Byrnes to discuss why so many corporate entities, including law firms, have decided to take a position on the Voice, the market factors driving such corporate positioning, and the potential implications for their employees — particularly those who might have opposing views. Mr Byrnes details the various employment and workplace relations scenarios that will have to be worked through, how employees can reasonably express their views if they are in conflict with their employer's position, the dangers of overstepping in publicly contradicting one's employer, and the steps both sides may need to take to ensure freedom of expression is balanced against corporate interests. Stress-associated purinergic receptors code for fatal suicidality in the hippocampal-hypothalamic-prefrontal circuit

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.22.516142v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhang, L., Verwer, R. W. H., van Heerikhuize, J., Balesar, R., Correa-da-Silva, F., Slabe, Z., Lucassen, P. J., Swaab, D. F. Abstract: Imbalanced purine metabolism is a key neurological basis for suicide and mood disorders (MD), wherein purinergic receptors in stress-sensitive cerebral regions are thought to be differentially activated. A hippocampal network that links the hypothalamus and prefrontal cortex implements an affective sensation of stress. We discovered that the hippocampus encoded fatal suicidal ideations in the dentate gyrus (DG) by a considerable amount of the granule cell nuclei with P2X purinoceptor 7 (P2RX7) expression, irrespective of the underlying MD. Compared to controls, patients with MD showed microglial dyshomeostasis throughout the hippocampal formation. Strikingly, P2Y purinoceptor 12 (P2RY12)-expressing microglia with segmented processes were remarkably present in the superficial layers of the medial entorhinal cortex (mEnt) in individuals with fatal suicidality. In the hypothalamic stress-sensitive nuclei, P2RY12+ microglia were more expressed in the supraoptic nucleus in MD and even higher when fatal suicidality was present. In the prefrontal cortex, P2RX7 transcripts sharply dropped in suicidal individuals, possibly removing the prefrontal inhibition of the hippocampus and hypothalamus. Confounder analysis showed that the suicide-specific molecular features faded when the postmortem delay was prolonged. Our findings imply that fatal suicidality presents with unique neuropathological alterations. The DG and mEnt are two crucial areas for deciphering the suicidal consequences. By including brain samples from legal euthanasia donors, suicide-specific biosignatures can be maximally retained. Decoding the bioactive framework through key genes, brain regions and neurological processes involved in suicide neuropathology may provide novel therapeutic strategies for suicidal individuals who are beyond the reach of mental health care. Like many sectors, the legal profession had to adapt to meet the demands of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Now is a good time to ask: what positive changes should be kept in the long term, and what problems might need to be solved due to new ways of working? Guest host for The Lawyers Weekly Show, Shandel McAuliffe, asked Michael Byrnes (partner at Swaab) and Carly Stebbing (founder and principal at Resolution123) their thoughts on the future of the profession, the challenges and ideas for overcoming them. The discussion included how to ensure junior solicitors can learn from senior practitioners when working from home. Mr Byrnes also raised that the experience of working from home sometimes varied widely between juniors in more cramped home-working conditions and seniors with the privilege of a comfortable home office. Resolution123, as Ms Stebbing described it, is an “online virtual firm”. From this standpoint, Ms Stebbing shared tips for the profession on how her firm has made remote working a success. In this episode, we focus on the development of gender identity and sexual orientation. First, we talk about sexually dimorphic areas in the human brain, animal models, and the factors behind their development. We then focus on the already identified areas of the brain associated with gender identity and sexual orientation. We talk about the “mosaic” hypothesis of the human brain, and also about gender dysphoria, and how we can better help trans people. -- Follow Dr. Swaab's work: Swaab Group: http://bit.ly/2sqfcyt Publications on PudMed: http://bit.ly/391RE2F ResearchGate profile: http://bit.ly/2RQLdu5 -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, VEGA GIDEY, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, DAVID DIAS, ANJAN KATTA, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, MAX BEILBY, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, THOMAS TRUMBLE, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, AND CORY CLARK! Legal practices around the world are experimenting with ‘new-age' ways of working, including four-day weeks in the United Kingdom. Discovering best practice conditions will, however, largely depend on the idiosyncractic needs of the firm. In this episode, Jerome speaks with two board members of Minds Count, Canon Oceania general counsel David Field and Swaab managing partner Mary Digiglio to unpack whether a four-day week would work, the importance of flexibility and other such movements away from the traditional 9-to-5.

In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Swaab senior associate Monique Robb about how family courts will respond when religious disagreements get in the way of determining parental arrangements.  Family law legislation dictates that a Court's paramount consideration should be the best interests of a child, and there are numerous factors that a court will take into account in making such determinations. But, in parenting disptues, what happens if the parents cannot agree on the religious upbringing of a child? Can a court determine which parent's faith should be prioritised, and what religion should be seen as offering a better environmental, cultural or lifestyle pathway for a child?

Everything we think, do and refrain from doing is determined by our brain. From religion to sexuality, it shapes our potential, our desires and our characters. Taking us through every stage in our lives, from the womb to falling in love to old age, Dr. Swaab shows that we don’t just have brains: we are our brains. Then the big question, “Do we control our brains or do our brains control us?” Dick Swaab was Director of the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research from 1978 to 2005. Since 1979 he is Professor of Neurobiology at the Medical Faculty, University of Amsterdam. In 1985 he founded the Netherlands Brain Bank and was Director until 2005. He is Leader Research team Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Neth. Inst for Neuroscience, an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and is appointed since 2011 Chao Kuang Piu Chair of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, P.R. China. His major research interests focus on sexual differentiation of the human brain in relation to gender identity and sexual orientation, aging of the brain and Alzheimer’s disease and the neurobiological basis of depression and suicide. He has published over 560 papers in SCI journals, authored more than 200 chapters in books, and edited more than 60 books. Swaab mentored 84 PhD students from which 20 are now full professor. He is author of the 2 volume monograph The Human Hypothalamus that appeared in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology series, Elsevier and of the Dutch best seller We are our Brains, that sold more than 450.000 copies in the Netherlands that is translated in 15 languages. There is also a children’s version of the book (You are your brain) that is translated in Russian and Thai. To learn more about Provocative Enlightenment Radio, go to www.provocativeenlightenment.com
