I know a lot of people who had to #reskill and carve out new career pathways for themselves. It is very difficult! When the education is there, employers are not. When the employers are willing, governmental support is missing. We have tons of amazing free online education. But it is not recognized by businesses. There are incredible people who took the leap, learned something totally new. They need work experience to get started, but an internship is only for “fresh” graduates. And while we are complaining about talent shortages, we are not really willing to employ someone who has so drastically changed their career. Let someone else try first… Today's podcast is about #reskilling, #education and #meaningfulcareers. My guests are two amazing people who are passionate about changing the world of work. They provide education, identify career pathways and support the transition of those who are experiencing major career shifts: ➔Jamie Albers, the co-founder of Mento (https://www.mento.co/about) ➔David Timis, the Global Communications Leader at Generation (https://www.generation.org/) To get in touch with them: - Jamie: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamiealbers/ - David: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidtimis/ We will talk about: ➔ The impact this past one and a half year has had on the job market ➔ The harsh realities of career transitioning for the re-skilled ➔ Transforming education to allow for multiple and diverse pathways throughout our lives ➔ The 4Cs needed to succeed in the world of work ❤️Help spread education for a resilient future!❤️ Support the Skills for Mars podcast here: ➜www.youtube.com/skillsformars (subscribe for free) ➜www.podhero.com (subscription fees are shared with content creators) ➜www.patreon.com/skillsformars (donations) - LinkedIn @skills for mars - Facebook @skillsformars www.skillsformars.com Support this podcast

Getting noticed when we are working remotely is harder than in traditional set-ups. Research has shown that getting the "required" visibility can easily lead to burnout. Ioana Cristea has researched this topic in detail, and the findings are alarming! To make themselves visible, employees in distributed environments mainly revert to online meetings. Their calendars are full to the point that one can wonder - When do they have time to eat? Do they have time for their families or some slack time for themselves? When does work get done? In this episode, we discuss this "virtual rat race" and what can be done differently - at organizational and individual levels. Ioana Cristea conducted this research over a period of 7 years. You can find the full research papers here: https://badm.au.dk/fileadmin/Business_Administration/PhD/Thesis_Ioana_Cristea.pdf. https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/orsc.2018.1265 If you want to get in touch with Ioana: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ioanaccristea/. #covid19 #workpractices #workplace COVID-19 has disrupted work and organizations across the globe. During the pandemic, 29 researchers from around the world have joined forces to review prior literature - rooted mainly in work and organizational psychology - and tried to make sense of the implications of Covid-19 for employees, teams, and organizations .(https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2020-58612-001.pdf) They focused on: ✔️ emergent changes in work practices (e.g., working from home, virtual teamwork) ✔️ emergent changes for workers (e.g., social distancing, stress, and unemployment) ✔️ potential moderating factors (demographic characteristics, individual differences, and organizational norms) given the likelihood that COVID-19 will generate disparate effects. This broad-scope overview provides an integrative approach for considering the implications of COVID-19 for work, workers, and organizations while also identifying issues for future research and insights to inform solutions. #skillsformars #remotework #futureofwork In this episode, we discuss remote from a different angle. We start with eSports and the learnings on remote from this newly booming industry. We then take a turn and discuss organizational design - hierarchies, agility, routines, change management, and designing employee interactions that lead to productivity and wellbeing when remote. Julien Clement (Assistant Professor - Stanford University) studies organization design and its impact on collaboration within and across organizations. He is generally interested in understanding the link between formal organizational structure and informal social relationships: how does an organization's structure affect how its members form relationships and develop routines? How can it help them adapt these routines when environmental demands change? And when can organizations thrive without any formal structure? Julien investigates these issues through a ‘micro-analytic' approach: rather than study organizations as broad aggregates, he starts by observing social interactions among individuals and tries to understand how organizational structure enables these interactions to aggregate into organizational outcomes. His work has relied on a variety of analytical methods (network analysis, agent-based models, big-data analytics) applied in a variety of contexts including the television game-show industry, professional videogaming (e-Sports) and mobile healthcare in Africa. Most recently, Julien started studying how the deployment of artificial intelligence inside organizations may affect collaboration and learning among their members.
