This month we record our first video pod with a guest on as we get back round the table with Dr Paul McCoubrie, a Consultant Radiologist at North Bristol NHS Trust and now a two time author with his new book "More Rules Of Radiology", the sequel to the esteemed 'The Rules of Radiology' book. During our chat, we get to ask Paul what it's like being a 2nd time author, pick his brains behind some of our favourite rules in his new book and of course, get the inside scoop on whether there will be a 3rd in the series,

Ellis and Corbin talk about "THE RULES OF THE GAME," and are kind of bowled over by how much there is in it. Topics include: farce in collapse, the movie's technical achivements, and how it functions as a frustrated, bordering on nihlistic flipside to Renoir's other prewar masterpiece. Corbin reccomends "Link's Awakening," available on your Nintendo Switch or your Nintendo Game Boy. Matt reccomends a bar in Portland. Next week's episode is NOT about 'All that Jazz,' because it was hard to find on the internet and Matt got annoyed while watching it. Instead we talked about Alfie Hitchie's "NORTH BY NORTHWEST," which you can watch on Tubi.
This week we talk about the Roger Avery film 'The Rules of Attraction' after Baki and GotMilk finally watched it.Contact: HistoricHole@gmail.com Instagram & Twitter & TikTok @HistoricHole

Read for This Week's Study: 2 Sam. 11:1–27, 2 Sam. 12:1–23, Gen. 3:1–8, 1 John 1:9.Memory Text: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew asteadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10, NKJV).Many people seem desperate to find a little peace and quiet. They are willing to pay for it too. In many big cities thereare internet-free rooms, which can be rented by the hour. Therules are strict—no noise, no visitors. People are willing to pay to beable to sit quietly and just think or nap. There are sleep pods that canbe rented in airports, and noise-reducing earphones are popular items. There are even canvas hoods, or collapsible privacy shields that youcan buy to pull over your head and torso for a quick workplace break.True rest also has a cost. While the spin doctors of the self-helpmedia would like to make us believe that we can determine our owndestiny and that rest is just a matter of choice and planning, yet, at leastwhen we consider this honestly, we realize our inability to bring truerest to our hearts. In the fourth-century, Augustine put it succinctly inhis famous Confessions (Book 1) as he considered God's grace: “Youhave made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they canfind rest in you.”This week we look briefly into the life of the man after God's ownheart to find out how he discovered the true cost of God's rest.
In this episode we speak to Dr Paul McCoubrie, Radiology Consultant at North Bristol NHS Trust, about his brilliant new book 'The Rules of Radiology', which is the culmination of a popular long running series that he has been releasing on a personal blog since 2013. Paul tells us about the inspiration behind the book and we pick his brains on the rationale behind some of our favourite rules ranging from the hilarious "Never offer to eat your pants", to the controversial "Never measure anything". This book for should be standard issue for all new radiologists....if you're a serial rule breaker, this episode comes with a trigger warning!
Which came first: 'Aladdin' or the egg? Hint: It was the egg. In the second episode of Arthouse Drive-In, Rob and T dip their toes into the wonderful world of animation. This week's film is Richard Williams' criminally under-appreciated, and tragically unfinished masterpiece, 'The Thief and The Cobbler.' This film was brought to us through the efforts of Garrett Gilchrist, who lovingly gathered all the existing footage into 'The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut.' Robert leads us through the over 30 years of production woes that led to the film being incomplete. T describes the sparse story that is very much secondary to the sparkling animation and learns pretty early on that there are some significant similarities to a Disney classic about a genie. Tag along as they boldly charge headfirst into this film to discuss the more... problematic aspects of the film, but save just enough time to appreciate that silky-smooth animated goodness. Pull up to the Arthouse Drive-In, silence your phones, and get comfy for the latest entry in Rob's and T's avant-garde diary. New episodes of Arthouse Drive-In will be released every Monday. Next up: Jean Renoir's 'The Rules of the Game' (1939).

The January Interception is kindly sponsored by designer Windswept Designs (Monique Leonard)! Did you know there’s a whole world of yarn out there that many of you have never played with? Most knitters I know use sheep’s wool but there are so many other fibers out there that offer a world of things to try. Before you roll your eyes and think “oh no, not cotton” just remember that just like you’d never judge all sheep’s wool by that one scratchy sweater that Aunt Tilda made you twenty years ago, not all cotton feels like that scratchy dish cloth. There’s also bamboo, silk, yak, alpaca, tencel, seacell, rose fiber, camel, acrylic, nylon, rayon, soy, mohair, angora, the list goes on. From gorgeous hand-dyed soft cotton to big box store acrylic there’s a range of price points and each fiber has its own interesting properties. Blends are a joy to work with! For this month’s interception, find a yarn that does not contain sheep. Not sure what to make? The sky’s the limit, but the advanced pattern search on Ravelry allows you to search by fiber type and will give you lots of ideas. And for the record, yes, you really can knit a beautiful stranded color work sweater out of cotton, like the two I wore to Rhinebeck this year. Happy knitting! 'The Rules' are a set of maxims by which the keen road cyclist often feels he or she should live by. It could be argued as a tongue in cheek dig at the MAMIL who wants to emulate their road racing heroes, but there's some method in the madness because many of the rules are actually rather sensible. That said, there are numerous that clearly poke fun at the over-keen amateur cyclist, so we've picked a few of our favourites and delved deeper into their meaning. Looks like I am in for some bodily harm, because I am about to reveal...a secret code which has come to be called, 'The RULES" in this podcast. And Rule #14 is, "Any attempt to document these rules could result in bodily harm to the male." These rules were obviously written by a woman, and I'm pretty sure the threat of bodily harm to which she is referring has nothing to do with the possibility of her punishing me with some kind of complete sexual exhaustion.

A little bonus pod for you here - the full version of one of our favourite interviews of the series with Martin Kirk, co-founder of /TheRules; an international collective of activists and thinkers seeking to challenge the root causes of poverty, and promote system-change for a more sustainable future. You heard an abridged version of this a few weeks ago (S02E07: https://tinyurl.com/y8nwbcf2) but Martin had so much more to say on the free trade, development and growth narratives of modern capitalism. Fascinating stuff that we thought you'd like to hear. A Culture Designed for All Introducing Joe Brewer and Evonomics Looking back through history you could find many examples of capitalism running amuck. There are even recent examples of those with money and power abusing those with less. This week's guest sees a massive global change coming and hopes he might be able to inspire a cultural design. Joe Brewer is the co-founder and editor of Evonomics magazine, a research director for TheRules.org and a coordinator for the newly forming Cultural Evolution Society. Joe is a complexity researcher and also an evangelist for the field of cultural design and he hopes to see a transition in society to sustainability. Check out this episode to see why we are where we are in society, how things could change and what that would take in a very interesting episode of the Boiling Point. In this episode Greg tells us how he sold his cottage with national exposure by “hacking the system”. Greg describes Joe as the ultimate culture hacker. Joe tells us how he became interested in cultural design. Greg tells us how he and Joe first met. Joe tells us why there needs to be an evolution in our current economic system. We learn how the model of economics we have now is based on good ideas that were coopted and other stupid assumptions. We also hear how certain stories and institutions hold up our system. We also learned how an important picture taken decades ago served as an important hack on our stories of separation. Joe dives into a time in the evolution of modern economics called the enclosure movement and how this has led us astray. We learn how co-ops and b-corps are taking us to a more balanced place. We hear how we are at a crux in our culture, which could lead to either a breakdown or a renaissance. We also learn that there is a biological basis for empathy and how the simplest culture hack is to just smile at people. Are you MEGA SUPER DEPRESSED? Do you want to hear Justin get berated for picking one of the most downer movies in the last 20 years to watch this week? OF COURSE YOU DO, right? Well that's what we were working with as we belatedly paired 2000's 'Requiem For A Dream' and 2002's 'The Rules of Attraction' for an honest-to-goodness, slit-your-wrists double feature! (insert heavy sigh here) Like many episodes, this week's left us with more questions than answers! Like...what is Jared Leto's major malfunction? Why wasn't 'Requiem' filmed with more happy colors? Should we visit our mothers more? Electro-shock therapy? Like, for reals? What if Candyman attended the famous double-sided sex toy party? Why is Dawson Leery so angry-face? Is puking during sex grounds for a punch in the jaw? Which 'Rules' character does Krissy hate the least? This episode's language calls for a PG-13 rating but the subject matter throughout makes it highly R-rated! So you've been warned!
