Bravery, Grit and Can-Do attitude are in ample supply with Steve and Jamie Michon. They started a machine shop with 3 young boys, very little money, lived in Steve's parent's basement, and bought a thrashed Fadal that Steve needed to completely rebuild before he could make parts on it. Similarly, Jamie knew nothing about Quickbooks, or the business side of running a machining company.  But none of those things stopped them from realizing their dream.  Thankfully Steve had a very supportive network of prior contacts and employers who provided them with work and allowed them to organically grow into the powerhouse they are today. This is a wonderful American dream story of a couple working side by side to grow a successful business and a family at the same time. Unternehmenskultur kann zum Erfolgsfaktor werden. Davon sind Lena Mardon und Anna Volquardsen überzeugt. Die beiden haben jüngst gemeinsam das Buch „Company Culture Design“ veröffentlicht und sind Teil von DEARWORK, einer Ideenschmiede für Unternehmenskultur und Organisationsentwicklung. Für ihr Beratungsunternehmen stellen die Autorinnen täglich die Knackpunkt-Frage: Welches Unternehmen ist bereit, seine Kultur auf den Prüfstand zu stellen? Denn: „Die Art und Weise, wie Teams zusammenarbeiten, ist der Erfolgsfaktor schlechthin“, erklären mir Lena und Anna im Gespräch. Das gute Miteinander: Unternehmenskultur als Schlüssel zum Erfolg „Im ersten Schritt müssen wir erst einmal das Verständnis für die Relevanz von Unternehmenskultur herstellen“, berichtet DEARWORK-Gründerin Anna. Dafür arbeitet sie gezielt mit Multiplikatoren im Unternehmen zusammen: „damit das, was wir in Austausch-Sparrings und Workshop gemeinsam erarbeiten, auch bei allen ankommt.“ Doch wie geht man das Thema Unternehmenskultur an – und was ist das eigentlich? Klar: Die gängige Definition kennt jeder: Unternehmenskultur ist die Summe aller Selbstverständlichkeiten. Laut Anna und Lena ist sie eindeutig das „wie“: „WIE wir die Dinge machen und WIE wir die Ziele des Unternehmens erreichen ist der Faktor, der den Unterschied macht.“ Wer Unternehmenskultur in die Zukunft gestalten will, braucht somit zunächst eine Bestandsaufnahme der aktuellen Kultur im Team oder Unternehmen. Und darauf aufbauend: eine grundlegende Werte-Arbeit und Neuausrichtung der Werte. Damit das gelingt, muss sich jedes Team und Unternehmen wichtige Fragen stellen: • Hinter welchen Zielen können wir uns als Team versammeln? • Welche Werte treiben uns aktuell? • Welche dieser Werte wollen wir mit in die Zukunft nehmen? • Welche Werte machen uns stark und tragen unsere Ziele? • Welche wollen wir vernachlässigen, weil sie unsere Ziele schwächen? Kultur(neu)ausrichtung hat also immer einen Referenzpunkt: das kollektive Werte-Set – unabhängig vom individuellen Werte-Set, das jeder Mitarbeiter von Haus aus mitbringt. Anna und Lena meinen dazu: „Für das funktionierende Miteinander im Unternehmen und Team ist es wichtig, dass man sich im Kontext der Arbeit auf eine Hand voll wichtiger Werte einigt.“ Doch wie gestaltet man diese „Werte-Arbeit“ konkret? Werte als Kern von Kultur: Wie wollen und können wir gut arbeiten? Über Verhaltensanalyse: „Im Verhalten zeigen sich die Werte. Indem wir das aktuelle Verhalten beschreiben, können wir uns die dahinter liegenden Werte erschließen und anschauen“, erzählt mir Anna, die Unternehmen und Teams schon seit über zehn Jahren bei diesen Prozessen begleitet. Ist das gemeinsame Verständnis und die Entscheidung für bestimmte Werte einmal da, besteht der nächste Schritt darin, sich anzuschauen, was das individuelle Verhalten antreibt: „Die meisten Mitarbeiter wissen genau, wo im Team, Tagesgeschäft und in ihrem persönlichen Wirkungskreis die Stellschrauben sind“, erzählen mir beide Autorinnen. „Die Übersetzung von Werten ins Tagesgeschäft ist eine hochkreative Aufgabe“ Gelebte Kulturarbeit heißt somit auch, dass Mitarbeiter selbst ihre Ideen entwickeln und ihre eigenen Handlungsfelder und -optionen identifizieren, um die Werte zu integrieren. Das fängt oft bei spezifischen Themen wie der Arbeitszeit an: „Die Arbeitszeitflexibilisierung hat für viele zu Klärungsbedarf geführt“, berichtet Lena aus ihrer Beratungsarbeit. Ergebnis sind mitunter auch neue Kommunikationsformate, z.B. wöchentliche Formate, die Innovationen am Markt vorstellen – oder konkrete Entscheidungen über den Einsatz von Arbeitszeit für den Wissenserwerb. Und natürlich dürfen sich Führungsebene auch selbst reflektieren – denn der Wertewandel macht im Kontext von New Work auch vor dem Leadership nicht halt. Some reasons for their disappearance include dying practitioners, lacking pedagogy, changing practices, and technocentric developments. How might we employ computation in the restoration, remediation, and reconfiguration of these practices, knowledges, and communities? How might social and cultural values and practices shape cognitive abilities and creative expressions? How might investigations in these practices at the intersection of culture, cognition, and material inform our conceptualizations and understanding of the human mind? In this talk, I present research in the dying craft of wire-bending, and the diasporic design practice of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival to answer some of these questions. By employing design/ making, computation, and ethnographic methods as forms of inquiry, I will share new computational tools, research frameworks, and expressions that address problems in this context, and reveal new dimensions and possibilities for how we think about craft, computation, and culture.

Und natürlich einen hohen Grad an Beteiligung und Eigenverantwortung. Das erfordert einen Kulturwandel in der Arbeitswelt. „Culture Design“ ist deshalb das Schlagwort der Stunde: Es geht darum, gelebte Unternehmenswerte zu überprüfen und zu verstehen, was euer Unternehmen erfolgreich und zukunftsfähig macht – oder eben nicht. Im aktuellen Podcast von „Unboxing Agile“ habe ich mit Robert Puchalla über dieses spannende Thema gesprochen und erfahren, was er als sogenannter Culture Designer damit für Erfahrungen gemacht hat. Ohne Frage: Die digitale Transformation stellt an Führungskräfte heute höhere Anforderungen als je zuvor, um Team-Leadership trotz Remote-Arbeitsplätzen und fehlender Kontrolle zu bewerkstelligen. Nicht zuletzt geht es darum, den Mitarbeiter als Menschen zu begleiten. Für das Finetuning des Mindsets eurer Unternehmenskultur braucht es also eine Menge Soft Skills – ein guter Grund, mal in die neue Podcast-Folge von "Unboxing Agile" hineinzuhören und euren Horizont in puncto „Cultur Design“ zu erweitern.

Power is everywhere in organizations. When building trust, collaborating, negotiating, and more. It’s there whether it’s explicit or not. That’s what has Kit Krugman intrigued. She’s also interested in understanding why power is so often negatively portrayed, when there’s a lot of good to come from using power to drive things like innovation, change, and purpose. In this conversation, I appreciate the way that Kit explains the difference between power and authority, helping me understand my own relationship and experience with power (not to mention the power privileges I have, whether I realize it or not). She also explores how power systems exist in organizations, and what we can do to better understand where power lies and how to leverage it, for good. In a world where power appears to be held by a few, Kit suggests that every individual has the power to influence and change. It’s just a matter of understanding where that power lies. This fascinating discussion made me think about power more clearly and positively. It’s a conversation worth continuing as it impacts every aspect of society, not least of which how it makes people feel at work. We discuss living regeneratively in the COVID-19 pandemic and the message Gaia is sending in the midst of this crisis, community resilience in the age of planetary collapse, the Earth Regenerators study group, and the Earth Regeneration Fund and the "Regenerative Death Clause" as presented in his recent essay ‘A “Regenerative Death Clause” for Coronavirus.’ “This fund becomes a mechanism for removing land from speculative markets and establishing around it the safeguards enabled by land trusts and cooperative land banks. After revitalizing herself, and defining her own individual values and purpose, she knew she wanted to help others do the same. While she and fellow co-founder Aileen De La Torre started with women’s retreats, their impact grew to a point where they brought their discovery process to organizations to help establish a more sustainable culture that leaves employees feeling more engaged -- not just in the workplace, but in the rest of their lives as well.  Lorie is insistent about the concept of life-long learning. She insists against using the word “expert” because while she always wants to share what she has learned, she knows that she is still learning and evolving. This type of open-minded thinking is a major component of why she is so effective at this line of work, and how SPARK has been able to reach almost a decade of impactful work. What does an ideal company culture look like? What are the limiting factors that prevent organizations from getting to that point? This week, Jason Burnham joins us to dive deep in the past, present, and future of creating a healthy brand culture and surviving acquisition. Jason is widely recognized as one of the founding fathers of digital marketing and founded Culture Design to help businesses transform and thrive. He discusses the importance of maintaining good personal and professional relationships despite challenges, how culture and honesty affect every aspect of success in a business from the top down, and what is necessary to create a healthy approach to growing organizations.   Takeaways: [3:07] Jason founded Culture Design in 2019. He also co-founded Ad Age Top 25, and Mass Transit Interactive Inc., which was acquired in 2005 by Horizon Media, Inc. What started as 70 to 75 people grew to thousands of employees, with a larger impact than what was originally intended. He also had a very stressful couple of personal hurdles including divorce and a family emergency. [15:05] Cultivating healthy relationships starts with yourself and being sure you are acting in your own integrity and honesty. It is then that we can build trust with others, have empathy for them, and develop great communication skills to connect. [21:48] When it comes to culture, there are no boundaries and no sectors that are left unaffected by others. Individual decisions at every level affect the entire team. [26:11] The brand experience for big brands extend far beyond the walls of an organization. You must think about how you are engaging your entire ecosystem including partners and clients. [35:04] Every role at an organization is critical to overall success. We must respect the different skill sets of others, and be clear on how they all fit into bettering the organization based on the goal and vision. [44:47] Business models can change and they aren’t set in stone once created. The market changes, and you have to be adaptable to changing market dynamics. [50:15] Trust is the foundation of any type of relationship, and there must be a psychological safety where employees feel safe to be their authentic selves and able to make mistakes without negative consequences. [58:24] When you take a look at culture and act strongly upon it, don’t be surprised if you attract new people and shed a few that aren’t in line. [59:31] Mid-level managers will be either the biggest conduits to creating a culture or resisting it. Il nous explique ensuite ce qui lui a donné envie de devenir designer & de se lancer dans l'entrepreneuriat (01:10), puis des différences et des points communs sur l'approche du design et du métier de designer au Canada par rapport à la France (03:48). Maxime nous présente ensuite une journée dans sa vie de papa designer (05:30) et de l'importance de faire son métier avec passion. Il partage ensuite comment il transmet ses conseils (08:20), notamment à propos du décalage entre l'école et le monde professionnel. Il met l'accent sur l'importance d'entretenir un bon réseau (08:40). Il nous partage ensuite sa vision d'un bon designer (10:35), puis son regard sur l'actualité du design (13:26), & qu'il est important de savoir pourquoi on fait ce métier (16:06) à travers le développement personnel. On échange ensuite sur la culture de l'échec et la notion de vulnérabilité mises en valeur par cette discipline (19:27) et la nécessité de revenir à l'essentiel (21:45). I ask him why he and his family chose Costa Rica do work in culture design, and why Costa Rica in particular is primed for regenerative practices and planetary collapse management. In this episode, I speak with Joe Brewer -- complexity researcher, cognitive scientist, and evangelist for the field of culture design. Simon Collins is a creative director, educator, fashion consultant, and ex-dean of the fashion school at Parsons in New York. With his new platform Fashion Culture Design, Simon holds what he calls Unconferences where not-boring fashion people address topics such as, How do you solve a problem like fashion week? And, Can sustainability be sexy? He gave the opening address at the Copenhagen Fashion Summitthis year, and his point was: it's all your fault! Is it? Is it down to us to make fashion more sustainable? And if so, how can we do it? Why is fashion important? Why don't more people recognise it at such? What is fashion's power? What on Earth has all this got to do with Hemingway, or, for that matter, Britney Spears? His session “Freedom, Culture Design and Our PossibleDestiny” is focused on the idea of 'Culture hacks'. A culture is the set of shared attributes, values, goals, and practices that both describes and shapes a group.Our era is increasingly characterized by an emergent "software culture." Not only is software itself creating much of our global wealth, but the unique challenges of creating out software have demanded wholly new types of engineered corporate culture from us. Various high tech development disciplines have been articulated and "packaged up." In response to the demands of software, we have created several seminalmanagement "movements" (such as Agile, Scrum, XP, etc.). These movements represent the birth of culture design. Culture hacking is a distinct kind of culture design. Culture hacks express a particular hacker ethos, an ethos originating in freedom and the world of software hacking. Good culture hacking will tend to promotefreedom, extend openness, and embody rationality and design elegance. As our culture becomes increasingly and fruitfully hacked, we will grow in effectiveness and ambition and will bring more and more problems into scope. Today he joins us to discuss Ecological Culture Design. Dave is a returning guest to the show. You can hear about his background and how he came to do this work in his initial interview. If this is your first time listening to Dave I recommend you start there to get a feel for the level of candor you'll hear in this episode. This is an open and honest conversation about the four components of Ecological Culture Design: Technology Resources Social and Economic Structures Cosmology We discuss how we must include these elements in our designs for permaculture systems. These areas matter because these are the pieces we must work with in order to bring the so-called “Invisible Structures” of permaculture to the forefront. Dave and I end the conversation with a constructive critique on what it means to organize, practice, and teach permaculture. In preparing this episode Dave and I both listened to the audio before it went out on the air and he asked that I correct his statement about Tantric philosophy. In the interview he said, “the perceiver, the perceived and the object of perception are one.” What he meant was “the perceiver, the perceived and the process of perception are one ,” a subtle but big difference. I agree with much of what Dave has to say in this episode. We cannot keep calling the non-landscape portions of our design invisible, or they will remain there, on the outside, away from view. We need to communicate about them differently in order to understand them and make them a part of our larger designs so that what we do can continue long after our ability to maintain or consult on a system is gone. For much the same reason the Designers' Manual only the beginning. Yes, every permaculture designer should have a copy in their library as a reference, and to understand some of the early vision as expressed by Bill Mollison, but in additional to that book we need a large library of materials to reference and cross reference and research to create good designs. With that I would like to see a new edition of the Designers' Manual written every decade or so as an encyclopedia of permaculture that can include more information about what we've learned over the years, but written as a collective cooperative piece by the community that takes the best of what everyone has to offer, and focuses on their areas of specialty, to create a book with multiple perspectives and voices. Get Dave Jacke and Ben Falk to write about formal design, Jude Hobbs and Andrew Millison about permaculture education, Marisha Auerbach and Rachel Kaplan to cover urban permaculture, and Karryn Olson-Ramanujan and Adam Brock on social permaculture. Those are just the names and topics off the top of my head. The Designers' Manual as written by Mollison is over 500 pages. There's room for many authors to contribute to such an effort. If you'd be interested in contributing to something like this, maybe we can get a proposal together and create a new manual for the 21st century. Whatever your permaculture plans, I'm here to help.
