In this episode, I get the pleasure of chatting with Marjolein Benschop of The Language Community to talk about being a multi-passionate person and language learner. Marjolein is a Dutch Polyglot, Language Coach and MSc in Psychology of Social Relations from the Goldsmiths University, London. Marjolein has worked in various countries (the Netherlands, Spain, England and Peru), teaching and helping students learn more effectively. She has given workshops on how to learn languages while managing one's expectations, and co-founded an online environment for language learners called The Language Community. Having managed to learn 8 languages to a conversational or even near-native level, she has discovered several key factors to staying motivated and reaching your language goals. In this interview, Marjolein gives us a glimpse of her experiences, struggles, and perceptions as a multi-passionate language learner. She also shares so much insightful wisdom regarding limiting beliefs and how to shift our mindset to allow for progress and growth, making room for fulfilling all the passions we have in our lives. We discuss how passion can be discovered in any number of life situations to create a more enjoyable experience and how gathering community can build inspiration for accomplishing the things you want. For Life on Purpose Episode #74, my guest is writer, artist, career coach and community leader Emilie Wapnick, the Founder and Creative Director at Puttylike, where she helps multipotentialites (people with many passions, skills, and creative pursuits) integrate all of their interests to create dynamic, fulfilling and fruitful careers and lives. In this inspiring conversation, we discussed her brand new book, How To Be Everything, A Guide for Those Who (Still) Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up (Harper Collins), in which she flips the script on conventional career advice. Instead of suggesting that you specialize, choose a niche, or accumulate 10,000 hours of practice in a single area, she provides a practical framework for building a sustainable life around ALL of your passions. “You don't have to choose one thing! That's the big secret no one tells you. " About: Emilie Wapnick is a writer, career coach, blogger, and community leader. Emilie Wapnick is what she calls a “multipotentialite”.  And recently I learned, I'm one too.  There's a good chance if you're reading this, you have some multipotentilite tendencies as well.   According to Emilie's site: "Multipotentialites generally have diverse interests across numerous domains and may be capable of success in many endeavors or professions, they are confronted with unique decisions as a result of these choices." In her new book, How to be everything - A Guide for Those Who Still Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up, Emilie dissects exactly what it means to be one of these gifted, multi-talented individuals. In it, she explains how you can more easily approach a world where specialization reigns supreme, and we learn that in today's society flexibility can prove to be more lucrative than specialty.  I first came across Emilie's work when one of my clients told me about her community of multipotentialites, called “the puttytribe” and I knew I had to connect with her. As someone who firmly believes that not everyone is built to follow one true passion,  I knew that Emilie would have some awesome insights to share. Apparently I'm not the only one who resonates with this concept, because her TEDx talk titled “Why some people don't have a true calling” went viral and has since been viewed over 3 MILLION times.  Emilie is paving the way for the polymath/multipotentialite community, and really anyone who has ever felt like they couldn't be fit into a box.  SUBSCRIBE:  iTunes | Stitcher | Youtube FOLLOW EMILIE: Website | Twitter | Facebook | Instagram IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:  How goal setting differs for someone who has a lot of interests. A while back I had an email from my friend Emilie Wapnick asking if she could use me as an example in her forthcoming book. I was so excited to hear that she had been given the chance to share her message for those of us who have a variety of interests and creative pursuits. And then I got a little bit terrified at the prospect of being used as an example! "Wow, what an honour! Of course. But are you sure..? Me?" The book is out this week in the USA on Harper Collins. I read it a couple of weeks ago as I prepared for our interview. By that point I had forgotten she was using one of my guest posts in it... Boy, it's weird seeing your name appear on the pages of a book that you're enjoying. When I saw it, I shrunk back, all shy and retiring. It was like if my name had just been called out in the airport terminal because I'm late for the plane (thankfully that's never happened). Or the staff in the restaurant emerged from the kitchen with a cake, all singing happy birthday. You know, that uncomfortable, "aghh, shhhh people are looking" kind of thing. How to Be Everything The book is an absolute triumph. It's the perfect companion for anyone (and I know many gentle rebels subscribe to this) who feels pulled towards different interests and creative pursuits. It's chock full of examples of people doing life on their terms, mixing and matching ("smooshing" together) different interests and making it work. Emilie has filled the book with priceless practical exercises that readers can follow in order to make sense of our own multipotentialism. To find the perfect mix of meaning, variety, and financial support in life. In this week's podcast I have an interview with Emilie about the book and about living a life of multipotential meaning in a world that often places higher value on specialisation. In this show you will discover: How the book was written, and why Emilie didn't lose interest half way through! Why multipotentialites are going to be increasingly valuable as the economy evolves and employment becomes less secure The different models of multipotentialism and how to make sense of them for yourself Why place, community, and the voices you immerse yourself in matter to your wellbeing How to become self-motivated when you just can't seem to get yourself moving towards the things that truly matter Where to buy the book...How to Be Everything: A Guide for Those Who (Still) Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up The Extended Interview For time reasons I had to edit portions of the full conversation. But you can listen to and download the full unedited version over on Patreon Support the Gentle Rebel Podcast at the lowest level and you'll get instant access. Among other things we discuss zero hours contracts, the gig economy, and how Emilie remained motivated in the process of writing her book. Over to You Do you identify with these ideas? Do you recognise yourself in the description of a multipotentialite? What sort are you and how does it play out in your life? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
