Chaplain, coach, and author Dean Abbott joins me for a thought-provoking conversation about the difference between healthy introspection and unhealthy rumination. Dean challenges a popular argument that therapy simply encourages people to think about themselves too much, making the case instead that people don't ruminate for fun — they ruminate because they're in pain and searching for something they've lost.Together we explore what makes self-examination productive versus destructive, and Dean introduces a framework rooted in the Christian tradition that contrasts nihilistic rumination — where a person endlessly rehearses their pain with no resolution — with a more structured self-examination oriented toward growth, virtue, and wisdom. The age old question - Do women know what they want? Can you ask a woman for a rubric on how to woo her and then follow it like a law book? The rules of attraction are complicated and there is stiff competition to win in the sexual and mating marketplace. So - what do we want?   The answer is simply NOT what we think or say we want. As wild as this may seem, and as many women as there are to deny this very obvious fact -- there's tons of evidence to support it. There is simply an unconscious drive guiding our mating behaviors. We may think we want a showering of verbal affection, we may think we want acts of servitude or to be placed on pedestals-- but the simple fact is that the men who have the most access to women ARE NOT doing that.  While the "bad boy" archetype may be a preverse of the true masculine energy needed-- women are attracted to men who have their own life and world to tend to. Being a man's sole focus and goal is biologically unattractive. Mate seeking behaviors are women's domain- men are supposed to necessarily choose to seek resources. Marjolein is a Dutch Polyglot, Language Coach and MSc in Psychology of Social Relations from the Goldsmiths University, London. Marjolein has worked in various countries (the Netherlands, Spain, England and Peru), teaching and helping students learn more effectively. She has given workshops on how to learn languages while managing one's expectations, and co-founded an online environment for language learners called The Language Community. Having managed to learn 8 languages to a conversational or even near-native level, she has discovered several key factors to staying motivated and reaching your language goals. In this interview, Marjolein gives us a glimpse of her experiences, struggles, and perceptions as a multi-passionate language learner. Turns out she and I have a LOT in common, we both live on islands. We both have given TED talks. Emilie Wapnick is what she calls a “multipotentialite”.  And recently I learned, I'm one too.  There's a good chance if you're reading this, you have some multipotentilite tendencies as well.   According to Emilie's site: "Multipotentialites generally have diverse interests across numerous domains and may be capable of success in many endeavors or professions, they are confronted with unique decisions as a result of these choices." In her new book, How to be everything - A Guide for Those Who Still Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up, Emilie dissects exactly what it means to be one of these gifted, multi-talented individuals. In it, she explains how you can more easily approach a world where specialization reigns supreme, and we learn that in today's society flexibility can prove to be more lucrative than specialty.  I first came across Emilie's work when one of my clients told me about her community of multipotentialites, called “the puttytribe” and I knew I had to connect with her. As someone who firmly believes that not everyone is built to follow one true passion,  I knew that Emilie would have some awesome insights to share.
