Have you ever felt guilty for being multipotentialite? Okay, now if you don't know what that means, it means you are a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life. Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. They have many paths and pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously. But wait, Is letting go fine? okay? good? That's a question to be asked. People judge each other based on many things. Interests, Pursuits, Ideas, and Careers are a few among them that are always questioned first evidently. So, here is a try to understand how is it to let go of one thing and start something new, not once but again and again and again with one of the most influential figures of my life. We have Dr. Femida Ali, A Dentist, Principal, NLP Practitioner, Skills Trainer, Freelance Photographer, Mom, Cancer Registrar, Medical Transcription Trainer, Founder of Aspire 2 Inspire, and currently an aspiring Life Coach in her mid 40's joining Rizwan Ramzan in this special episode of The Mallu Show. You know what I'm saying right? Rizwan and Fermida both have a lot in common being multipotentialites and as Rizwan says, Rizwan is still exploring everything about Life and its Meaning, this turns out to be an amazing conversation about starting, stopping, and restarting. And today, Femida decodes Rizwan's doubts about everything Hope, Letting go, Starting again, and Sympathy. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Now.. many of us may have heard the phrase "hate is a strong word" and so we may flinch just by reading it! The internet defines multipotentiality like this: "an educational and psychological term referring to the ability and preference of a person, particularly one of strong intellectual or artistic curiosity, to excel in two or more different fields." Hence, a multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life. Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. In this episode of Navigating Your Child's Education, we dig deeper into the concept of multipotentiality, the characteristics of multipotentialites at home and school, how to encourage curiosity, and the beauty of being a generalist. Our guest, Dr. Mark Eckel, is an esteemed educator with 35+ years of experience ranging from the high school ranks to graduate and doctorate students. Here is the deal, I want to start the next season off strong, and I didn't want an interview to be the launch episode. Felt that it would be too abrupt to jump right in with one, so this micro episode came into being. After this comes out early on in the week, there will be three interviews coming out: Monday, Wednesday, Friday to kickstart this new season! The following week will return to the once a week interview schedule, however the next half a dozen OmniContent episodes are all part of the same series. In fact the last OmniContent, #5, Multipotentialites is the first in the series. I am planning on releasing the next 7 in the eight part series each day of that following week. Along with the interview of that week. This will be the first PolyInnovator Mini-Series of many! Week 1: This episode plus three interviews. Week 2: One interview plus the 7 OmniContents. Week 3: Back to a normal schedule with one interview, and one OmniContent per week. Now with the new season I decided to go back to a sporadic Micro-PolyCast release cycle. Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you are as excited as I am! Listen to the last two seasons here: www.pod.co/polycast

Over time, though, contributing your own ideas and experiences can help you get more out of a support group. But remember that support groups aren't a substitute for regular medical care. Let your doctor know that you're participating in a support group. If a support group isn't your thing but you need help coping with your condition or situation, talk to your doctor about counselling or other types of therapy. Build a Network Whether you are making big changes to your life or simply chasing your dreams, it is difficult to do it alone. Having the proper support of people you trust greatly enhances your chances of success. It is important to have a good support network that you can bounce ideas off and get feedback from. [5:13] Next week’s episode is still up in the air. Marc has several interviews scheduled this week that he thinks you will enjoy. Stay tuned! [5:22] This week’s episode will be a replay of Marc’s interview on the Second Act Stories podcast. The host, Andy Levine, is a great guy with a very big heart. He is a podcaster with whom Marc wants to partner in the coming year. Marc hopes you enjoy this episode. [5:48] Andy shares a few moments from the interview when Marc answers the question, “What should you do if you are really unhappy in your current work?” [6:32] Andy Levine welcomes you to the Second Act Stories podcast and introduces Marc Miller. They are meeting at the Princeton Public Library in New Jersey. [8:11] Marc is a multipotentialite. He gets bored after three years of doing something. When he worked at IBM, he was happy to change positions often. At the time, IBM wanted to develop generalists. That world has changed. When Marc left IBM in 2000, he started a journey of half-step career changes aided by relationships. [9:03] Marc explains the term Multipotentialite. There is a TEDx talk on it. Multipotentialites have lots of interests and are not driven by one thing. [9:30] Marc talks about his head-on bike vs. car accident and how it changed his life’s path. At the time, he was at a fading startup and his job was ranking people to layoff. He began to question his career choice. [11:15] Most of us act in roles in our careers. Marc wanted to stop playing a role that was not natural for him. While he was on bed-rest, he had a lot of time to ask himself why he was doing what he was doing. [12:47] Marc shares the beginning and history of Career Pivot, starting with his joining Launchpad Job Club. Marc started at LifeSize Communications as the Great Recession was starting. At that time the meetings “exploded” at Launchpad Job Club up to 400 people every Friday, all older workers. [13:48] In 2009, Marc asked who was caring about folks of this age who were looking for work? He found the book Don’t Retire, Rewire! by Jeri Sedlar and Rick Miners. The stories featured people who had pensions to cushion their time to return to work. [14:24] In Mexico, Marc sees a lot of economic refugees, who can’t afford to live in the U.S. Marc wanted to help that class of individual who wants to keep working and make an income, but probably not in a traditional job. That’s a hard mind-shift to make. [15:01] How is a pivot different than a change? A lawyer won’t go directly to be a pastry chef. What kinds of incremental changes are needed? Think of a basketball pivot. [16:23] A successful career pivot takes flexibility, openness. Changes never turn out quite the way you expect them. Walk down that path and be willing to be surprised. [17:01] Marc has a person in his Online Community who started driving for Lyft and through her contacts, got several contract gigs. Marc wrote about it in a blog post, “Synchronicity and Serendipity Can Be Essential in Life”. You have to put yourself out there for good stuff to happen. Find support people to get you outside of your head. [18:05] We have belief systems that are made up. Get out and talk with people about your plans and get feedback on your idea. Marc tells how he explored the idea of something like Career Pivot with career specialists. Overwhelmingly, they persuaded him not to get a coaching certification. [19:06] Marc asks people in his career assessment process to consider when they were the most miserable in their career and when they were the most fulfilled in their career. This is to help them understand what makes them happy and what makes them miserable. The environment and the team are more important than the job they do. [20:09] It is important to know yourself and what you want before a job search. Find a position that doesn’t require you to play a character strange to you. Know how to take care of yourself in a job where you have to act out a role. Marc recommends reading Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, by Susan Cain. [21:22] We’re paid more to be extroverts but half the world are introverts. Marc is a really good public speaker and an introvert. When he’s done, he’s exhausted. Marc doesn’t get energy from speaking. He learned to be a geek than can speak. Susan Cain speaks of restorative niches in her book. Schedule things in your day that restore you. [22:23] Gallup polls show that a lot of people are unhappy in their jobs. Marc shares his advice to them on the first thing they should do before changing jobs. Marc says don’t run away from your current job, run to what you want to do. Marc shares how he invited Elizabeth Rabaey just to go try different random things before choosing. [24:31] Marc often asks people what they couldn’t get enough of doing as a kid. Kids don’t have filters. Marc used to love to do jigsaw puzzles. He learned that he is a pattern matcher. [25:11] Marc has just released the third edition of Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the 2nd Half of Life. Marc talks about the evolution of the book from 2011 to 2019. The third edition is more aspirational than tactical. Marc talks about creative destruction. AI and robotics are going to affect you! There is a chapter on ageism. [26:27] If you want to work into your 70s, you have to plan for it in your 50s. It’s a mindset shift. Many will need to work for the money and it won’t look like a full-time job. One of the common themes of Marc’s online community is that everyone wants freedom to work on what they want when they want, and how hard they want to work. [27:17] We don’t want to conform anymore. When Marc worked as a teacher, he found that schools don’t want people like Marc, because they don’t do what they’re told. [27:52] Marc shares his contact information: go to Careerpivot.com, sign up for Marc’s Career Pivot Insights email, check out the CareerPivot.com/Community, find the book, Repurpose Your Career on Amazon and other fine online sellers. Find the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Podbean, or at Careerpivot.com/podcast. Andy is a big fan of it! [29:39] Marc hopes you enjoyed that episode. Andy does a great job with the Second Act Stories podcast and Marc highly recommends that you subscribe to it. How to be Everything - Emilie Wapnick - Refuse to Choose - Barbera Sher - www.puttylike.com - https://www.ted.com/talks/emilie_wapnick_why_some_of_us_don_t_have_one_true_calling Praat mee: Instagram: @dwarsliggersdepodcast E-mail: dwarsliggers@welikeliving.com

Random Thoughts with Nicole L. Turner

Multipotentialite: A multipotentialite is someone with many interests and creative pursuits. Multipotentialites have no one true calling the way specialists do. Multi-passionate/multipotentialite/multi-faceted are all interchangeable terms. It’s okay to be a multi-passionate person in a niche’ happy world. Many people say, focus on ONE thing and be the expert in that one thing. Yes, that’s great advice for some, but not for all – not for those of us who are multi-passionate.  Up until recently, I was very frustrated, and actually felt like a failure because everyone kept encouraging me to follow ONE course until successful, and my brain just could not focus on one thing because my interests and talents weren’t in just one thing. So to my fellow multipassionate/multi-faceted/multipotentialites out there I want to say to you, “You don’t have to choose just one because you were never meant to.” I want to offer some tips for the multipotentialites like me: Stop trying to pick that one thing. You have many passions – you just need to find a conveyance to deliver your multi passions. If you’re like me, when you start with one idea, you may eventually get bored with it and move on to something else. How do you help yourself with this problem? First, you must accept that there’s a bigger calling. The things you are multi passionate about server a bigger purpose. How do you know? Well, you start by identifying: Your purpose Your values Your SELF Your Core Message Your cause List your passions. List all the things you are interested in and then think about what problem (or multiple problems) do they solve? You need a confluence or convergence – it’s that things that bring all of your passions under one umbrella. For example, my confluence happened when I created the trademark, Detox Strategist. Not the problem was when most people hear the word Detox, they think of weight loss or drugs and alcohol detox. Detox or detoxify means to rid of poison or the effect of poison. Poison is something that is harmful to our happiness or well-being or causing harm or ruin or hurtful.   Multipassionate people tend to over thing – suffer from paralysis by analysis. So, I encourage you to stop think and start doing. Clarity comes from engagement, not thought. Your journey is just that – YOUR journey. Don’t compare your path to others. Enjoy YOUR journey and trust in the destination. Don’t be hard on yourself, and make self-care a priority. We multipotentialites tend to be hard on ourselves and because of our varied interests, we sometimes over do it, and fail to incorporate rest and self-care into process.

What is a multipassionate? Let's start with getting clear on what a multipassionate actually is. Other words to describe this phenomenon: Multipotentialite, Polymath, Renaissance Man (or Woman or whatever you identify as), Scanner, or the more derogatory Jack of All Trades, Master of None. Emilie Wapnik is my hero in this field, so I'm going to use her most excellent definition which applies to all of these terms: "A multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life. Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. Being a multipotentialite is our destiny. We have many paths and we pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).” My story I am a hardcore multipotentialite - or multipassionate - whatever you want to call it - I've always been into a LOT of things. As a kid, after I decided I wanted to be a Coca Cola Van Driver, a Ballerina, and an Archeologist (I loved dinosaurs and was heavily influenced by Jurassic Park) I finally settled on Artist. But even then, when I had my #1 passion, I was always dabbling in other interests. Instead of having a collection of stamps or rocks, I had a collection of COLLECTIONS. Yep. This included plastic baggies - the kind you find buttons or drugs in - keyrings, stickers, erasers, used credit cards… May be I was just into hoarding junk. But being INTO multiple things has followed me to this day. If you don't know, I don't just do the Creative Introvert. I've been designing websites since I graduated uni nearly a decade ago, I help clients with marketing strategy, I have another podcast (the Seeker and the Skeptic, in case you're interested), I have an Etsy shop for my mandala art, I am learning to become a yoga teacher for crying out loud. Yeah. I have a few interests. I always caveat this with the fact I have no children, hence the time thing. But in any case, no matter what my number 1 focus is, I always have a few other things on the go - just to keep myself entertained.   How to know if you're one It's becoming more and more common. Us millennials are increasingly switching jobs - the median tenure for workers age 25 to 34 is 3.2 years. Laptop lifestyles are also becoming more common than they were 10 years ago - with more and more ways to make a living online than ever before. If you consider yourself creative, it's quite likely you also fit the bill of multipassionate too. Are you a multipassionate? * You're always coming up with new ideas, whether it's in the shower, taking a walk, drifting off to sleep * You keep a notebook at hand at all times to capture the latest greatest idea * You feel pretty low and mopey when you aren't buzzing with new ideas - something must be off * You feel like there'll never be enough time to get round to all your ideas - which can be annoying * You sometimes struggle to finish the ideas you start * Or you struggle to get ideas off the ground because - whoosh! There comes another idea right around the corner Quiz: http://www.renaissancesouls.com/renaissancesoul/quiz.htm As you can see, there are some highs and some lows when it comes to being a multipassionate.   #Multipassionate problems One of the lows you might have experienced is, Multipassionate Guilt. It's the guilt that comes when we're reminded by some book or podcast that tells us that ALL successful people must focus on ONE thing and ONE THING ONLY! That we must put 10,000 hours into our ONE THING in order to be acceptable humans. Can't we put one hour into 10,000 things and still live a good life?? Then there's Multipassionate Shame. Juggling multiple careers or hobbies or ideas can lead you to feel like you still don't have things figured out. It makes the classic networking question “So, what do you do?” a nightmare. If you're a teacher but also a freelance copywriter who dabbles in social media consulting on nights and weekends, what do you do, really? How do you wrap up your complex personal brand into a 30-second elevator pitch? Oh and Multipassionate insomnia. This comes from having 20 different projects on the go or floating around in your head can feel plain overwhelming. Try sleeping at night when you're juggling that. We can't forget Multipassionate Despair. This is the frustration that comes with feeling the urge to burn everything you've built down to the ground, just to have a clean slate and start again… is quite stressful. But the worst, in my experience, is… Multipassionate Boredom. It's feeling like whatever awesome - or previously awesome - stuff you had going on is now about as interesting as a pair of old socks. It's like gum that you've chewed all the flavour out of. We're left waiting for that next idea to come to us, something - anything - to help us feel that spark of enthusiasm again. Why it's actually an advantage Before we get too down on our multipassionate luck, I want to shine a light on the - many - advantages of being interested in so many things. 1. It makes for a pretty impressive resume. Having a mixture of subject matter on your resume gives you much more to talk about than your competitors applying for the same role. In an increasingly competitive job market, bringing diverse skills to the table is only a good thing. 2. You have a plan B… and C… 3. You're more interesting. You know those people at a dinner party or networking event that have the most fascinating stories or seem to know a lot about a huge range of topics? Following your weird and wonderful interests only makes you a more interesting person to talk to. Plus, it means you can move beyond that bloody small talk much faster.

As someone who has always been drawn to a myriad of interests and passions, you probably already know that I self-identify as a “multi-passionate” or “multi-potentialite” - which simply means that I’m the kind of person who is drawn to a myriad of interests and have a hard time narrowing down my interests and my career into just one thing. It’s a topic that comes up often on the show, and this week on the show I’m sharing all about the power of owning your expertise as a multi-potentialite. The term multi-potentialite (or multipassionate, or scanner, or renaissance soul), is one that describes anyone who has more than one interest and has a hard time choosing to do “just one thing” with their life or career. Many creative entrepreneurs can relate to this trait - if you’re curious about many things, if you enjoy dabbling in many disparate topics, and if you find yourself picking up a lot of new hobbies / interests and moving along from them after a short amount of time, you are likely a multi-potentialite. It’s a wonderful thing to be, really. It means you’re a quick study. You synthesize the various disparate things you have spent time learning about in new ways. You often approach life and the world with a beginner’s mind, seeing yourself as a life long learner, instead of someone who sees themselves as a narrowly defined expert. Things stay fresh and new to “multipods,” and you probably see things in a very different way than those around you who are specialists. What about being an expert? One of the key things that comes up for multipotentialites is that with all of the going from topic to topic, it can also be hard to see yourself as an expert. At least in today’s society, experts are often labeled as such because of their long, linear path of study. Our schools teach us to be specialists, they’re even set up to have a clear linear path from one topic to the next, which generally yields someone in the workforce who is a specialist in a single area. Multipotentialites can also be experts, although the definition of your expertise might require that you look at what it means to be an expert in a slightly different way. If you look back at the many things you’ve dabbled in, whether that be in your career, or in your hobbies and interests, you’ll likely start to see a pattern emerge. It might be that you are good with organizing people, or inventing things, or that you are an excellent project manager because you have the ability to be a quick study. For multipotentialites, our expertise lies in the abilities we’ve developed to be interested in many things. While the interests might not seem to have a common thread, if you dig a bit deeper, I’m betting you will recognize it in your own work and interests. Name your “human job description” In addition to knowing your multipotentialite super powers, it’s also really important to be able to name your own human job description. Create the “obvious” description for yourself: I’m a _____ who ______. What's your day job,or your current title? Example: I'm a project manager who leads projects in digital marketing. Dig a little deeper. What does your multipotentialite skill set and super powers from the worksheet above say about you? Who is the true you? When I dig deeper, I’m a ________ who helps others to ______________. Example: I'm a joyful human connector who helps people see the parts of themselves they may have forgotten along the way. Emilie Wapnick is what she calls a “multipotentialite”.  And recently I learned, I'm one too.  There's a good chance if you're reading this, you have some multipotentilite tendencies as well.   According to Emilie's site: "Multipotentialites generally have diverse interests across numerous domains and may be capable of success in many endeavors or professions, they are confronted with unique decisions as a result of these choices." In her new book, How to be everything - A Guide for Those Who Still Don't Know What They Want to Be When They Grow Up, Emilie dissects exactly what it means to be one of these gifted, multi-talented individuals. In it, she explains how you can more easily approach a world where specialization reigns supreme, and we learn that in today's society flexibility can prove to be more lucrative than specialty.  I first came across Emilie's work when one of my clients told me about her community of multipotentialites, called “the puttytribe” and I knew I had to connect with her. Multipotentialite. Multi-passionate. Scanner. Renaissance Person. Generalist. Multipod. Whichever term you favor, the meaning behind it is what’s important. This makes it hard to narrow down a specific career, since there are so many choices out there that they can thrive in. Welcome to Episode 130 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this episode I discuss why for many introverts and highly sensitive people a diverse range of income streams can be a freeing way to create a much sought-after living filled with meaning and variety. I AM a multipotentiliate which means I have loads of interests and creative projects that I want to pursue. I don't feel like I have one 'calling' in life, unless it is a calling to have lots of different things you want to do. And yes perhaps that's exactly right. It can be difficult to use this to make a living. Multipotentialites can be made to feel like they have commitment issues, unable to focus and settle on one path as we believe we should. But this is not what's going on and it is not an unusual way to interact with the world, especially for introverts and highly sensitive people. The more I have connected with people who feel this way the more I realise it is more natural for a great many of us to be like this. We want to make a living doing work that matters to us and we feel more compelled to explore a whole variety of what the world has to offer than to settle on one specific path and move with tunnel vision down it. Over the past ten years I have continued to battle this conflict between the need to make a living and the importance of making a life. In this week's episode I felt compelled to share with you what this has come to look like for me and how I have found a range of income streams has freed me to make a living whilst engaging in a work that brings me much-needed variety and meaning. In this week's episode I spend a short amount of time addressing one of the questions that was asked in the member's Q&A session this week. Why are introverts and highly sensitive people also often multipotentialites? This is taken from an hour long exclusive session that I did in the membership where I covered this and other questions from members that cover the following: 1.  Why introverts and highly sensitive people are often multipotentialites 2. What to Think About when Building Multiple Streams of Income 3. The implication of a sayings like "jack of all trades and a master of none" when talking about people with lots of interests and no particular ONE specialism 4. Whether Multipotentialism is a modern phenomena or if there are examples of multipotentialites through history. 5. What you say when people ask ‘what do you do?' as a multipotentialite. To hear my thoughts on these things come and join the community, completely risk free, right now. From my experience and observations the link between introversion/high sensitivity, and multipotentialism is down to three or more things: We Tend to be Dreamers We Tend to Think Deeply We Tend to Prepare Very Deeply Over to You Question: Do you identify as a multipotentialite? How does that play out in YOUR life? Please leave your answer in the comments below. I would love to hear from you!
