Our favorite vinyl records from bands or artists filed under "G". And...GO! In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2022, idiot basement-dwelling, award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-first episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good handle on the alphabet. They had previously utilized the letters A thru F, so naturally, they went with G. Episode 31 is back after being banned from all streaming platforms. New (the same) and improved (still mid) with certain sonic elements removed (as to not get sued). It's time to find out which LPs and/or 12” singles filed under the letter “G” from Jay & Deon's collections they love most, then rap about the bands behind the vinyl. We're honoured to have Robert Forster as our guest today! The Go-Betweens frontman and solo artist has had an incredibly prolific career, and today he releases his most personal and moving record to date in the form of 'The Candle and The Flame'. Fuelled from saddening circumstances, this record is a snapshot of a family using art as a processing tool and showcases some of Robert's most intimate work yet. In today's episode, we're talking with Robert about songwriting through difficult periods, how to use restraint when writing lyrics, collaborating with his son Louis (from indie band The Goon Sax), and why Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) is one of his fave lyricists.Robert Forster: Instagram / Facebook / SpotifyBuy tickets to The Candle & The Flame tour here. Thanks again to Robert Forster for his time. On this week's show, we wrap up the merry month of Debts-cember (and the year in general) with... the most honorable of mentions the runners-up that fill our cup the best of the rest of 2021 All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
So, 2021 nears it's end and it's been another weird one, but again a brilliant year for music. We even had a few opportunities to see actual live music this year! Here's our traditional best of the year episode! We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of this year.

sent $$$ this week to Sustainable Economies Law Center’s Coopalooza .theselc.org“Our vision is to redistribute wealth and power and dismantle the oppressive dominant economic system by creating more worker controlled enterprises.Hierarchies keep power and assets in the hands of a privileged few and proliferate organizational and societal injustices, inequities, and disempowered workers. Concentrated power is the bane of democracy. Hierarchies fail to use the creativity and wisdom of workers close to the problems, to deliver fair and equitable solutions and create right relationships. The solution is to democratize every workplace for every worker. Democratic workplaces build community well-being and transform local economies by putting power over decisions and assets into the hands of workers.Sustainable Economies Law Center’s Labor team provides education, advocacy, research, and legal advice to workers democratizing the places where they work. All month, we’re inviting our friends, neighbors, community members, and partners to support our grassroots fundraising campaign. Our goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of September to support our work democratizing workplaces everywhere. All month long we’ll be sharing stories, resources, and new ideas from the members of our Labor team. John Parish has crafted some of the indie music's most acclaimed albums. The Bristol producer has been behind Aldous Harding's last two records, he co-wrote and produced Eels “Souljacker”, and Giant Sand's “Chore of Enchantment”, and recently he's been working with The Goon Sax and Parquet Courts. He's a composer and musician too, releasing his own works and soundtracking beautiful scenes on stage and screen. But John's longest creative relationship is also his most celebrated, a lifelong musical partnership with PJ Harvey. You'll hear the story of how they met, and why their collaboration has been so fruitful, as well as tales from the studios of Aldous Harding, and Mark Linkous, in this beautiful insight into capturing the intangible magic of song. Dry Cleaning – Scratchcard Lanyard Sparklehorse – Piano Fire Aldous Harding - Blend John Murry – I Refuse To Believe (You Could Love Me) John Parish & PJ Harvey - April

Mirror II is the third full length record from The Goon Sax, an indie pop/rock trio from Brisbane who formed as friends in high school. They initially grew to acclaim through their debut and sophomore records, 'Up To Anything' and 'We're Not Talking', while Mirror II only continues that trajectory. The record is a fascinating and hugely enjoyable example in their progression as a band. Their continued growth serves both as a bit of a reflection on the times, as well as an exciting jump into a comparatively new sound. TRACKS INCLUDE: 'In The Stone' 'Psychic' 'Tag' 'Temples' 'Make Time 4 Love (We're Not Talking)' 'We Can't Win (We're Not Talking)' 'The Chance' 'Bathwater' 'Desire' 'Carpetry' 'Til Dawn' 'Caterpillars'.

This month marks the tenth anniversary of Bon Iver's self-titled sophomore album, which solidified Justin Vernon's project as an indie rock powerhouse, and eventually earned him a handful of Grammys (see above). To celebrate ten years of this pivotal record, Steve and Ian are putting aside their opposing views on Bon Iver to spend an episode reflecting on the outfit's catalogue and lasting impact. In the decade since the release of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon has made a name for himself as one of the least predictable and most adventurous artists of recent memory, with a series of ultimate “grower” albums that end up shifting listeners' tastes, that somehow exist in the same timeline as recent massive collaborations with Taylor Swift. This week, Steve and Ian discuss whether “Woods” is one of the most important indie rock songs of the 21st century, and how much Vernon's association with Kanye actually accounts for his credibility in the indie world. In this week's Recommendation Corner, Steve is digging Australian indie-pop outfit The Goon Sax's forthcoming LP Mirror II, while Ian is plugging Militarie Gun's new EP All Roads Lead To The Gun.

Babaganouj: Starting in 2011, Babaganouj have become an absolute songwriting powerhouse in the last 5 years releasing too many singles and EP’s to name, as well as touring the east coast more times than we can keep track of. Their garage pop sound is always dripping with the glowing sunbeams you can expect from a Brisbane band, but what makes them unique is songwriting and vocal duties are shared equally between the three members Harriette Pilbeam, Ruby McGregor, and Charles Sale. They’ve even taken the extra step in this direction by recording three separate EP’s for release this year, with each one written solely by one member. And although they may share the songwriting duties, their songs are always catchy, upbeat, and there to keep the good times rolling. Recorded live at The Foundry in Brisbane on the 20th of March, 2015. Recorded & mixed by Tim Roberts. The Goon Sax: Like their name would probably indicate, The Goon Sax are a teenage trio who write songs about being an awkward adolescent, while still being that awkward adolescent. Their songs cover everything from home haircuts, ice cream, and not being able to work at target. Put simply, they have found a way to turn the mundane pieces of growing up in suburbia and write catchy, jangly indie pop songs about it. Their debut album ‘Up to Anything’, which came out on the Chapter Music label in March 2016, has seen them tour nationally and internationally, and even scored great reviews from international tastemaker publications Pitchfork and NME. Recorded live at The Woolly Mammoth in Brisbane on the 25th of June, 2016. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 11th September 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
We head down under to listen to Ryan’s favorite Australian indie pop songs. Jenna mixes herself a cocktail called the Australian Virgin (we’re looking at you, 1997 era Ben Lee).
