How many of us have seen someone on TV crying about a breakup over a tub of ice cream? Or done something similar ourselves? Many people eat this way because they want to feel better, but believe it or not, bingeing actually makes negative moods last longer. The good news is that consuming food based on mood is actually a learned behavior! Join Dr. Kashey for the second part of his food cravings rant to find out what you can do to put an end to those hard cravings that lead to bingeing behavior.
“Soft science” doesn't mean the study of mattresses and marshmallows! It's science that is based on interpersonal interactions instead of lab research. In this episode, the good doctor has read over fifty sources on food cravings and has some interesting facts to share. Like why chocolate is the single most craved food around the world... and why dieting can actually make you gain weight instead of losing it! Join Dr. Kashey in a deep dive into the nature of food cravings for more fascinating finds.
This month, Librarians Billette, Pete and Steve are talking about "Soft Science" by Franny Choi, a hefty collection of Poetry that explores identify, consciousness, and the fading (or failing?) division between technology and humanity - or so we hypothesize! Pete plays the judge this episode to Billette and Steve's cover predictions. Can Billette keep her streak going? Or was Steve more machine than man when he churned out this prediction? Find out!

JJ is on a temporary hiatus so a couple friends of the podcast Alvin B and Doc Matumbo stop by to talk shop. They get into penis to body ratios, the nature of the WNBA, the appropriateness of dating people shorter than you, the emotional burden of comparing ourselves to others, pressure from parents to achieve, when are we ready to have children and raise them with emotional maturity, trying to stay young for too long instead of aging gracefully, and the questionable legitimacy of the outer suburbs of Melbourne

Franny Choi’s book-length collection of poetry, Soft Science (Alice James Books 2019), explores queer, Asian American femininity through the lens of robots, cyborgs, and artificial intelligence. As she notes in this interview, “this book is a study of softness,” exploring feeling, vulnerability, and desire. How can you be tender and still survive in a hard and violent world? What does it mean to have desire when you yourself are made into an object of desire? What does it mean to have a body that bears the weight of history? Choi’s poetry contemplates such questions through the technology of poetic form. “Once, an animal with hands like mine learned to break a seed with two stones – one hard and one soft. Once, a scientist in Britain asked: Can machines think? He built a machine, taught it to read ghosts, and a new kind of ghost was born. At Disneyland, I watched a robot dance the macarena. Everyone clapped, and the clapping, too, was a technology. I once made my mouth a technology of softness. I listened carefully as I drank. I made the tools fuck in my mouth – okay, we can say pickle if it’s easier to hear – until they birthed new ones. What I mean is, I learned.” — from “A Brief History of Cyborgs” by Franny Choi Franny Choi is the author of two poetry collections, Soft Science (from Alice James Books) and Floating, Brilliant, Gone (Write Bloody Publishing), as well as a chapbook, Death by Sex Machine (Sibling Rivalry Press).
