Six years ago, Travis was living in Japan and knew he wanted to travel more. But there was no way he could travel as much as he wanted to on a teacher’s salary. Plus, having “only” summers off wasn’t conducive to a schedule of constant travel! So he started learning about all the ways to travel for less, including the golden goose: frequent flyer miles. In five years, he was able to earn over 4 million frequent flyer miles and travel to over 40 countries, all for much less than he ever dreamed. Travis started Extra Pack of Peanuts to share this knowledge with the world as well as create an online business that he could run from anywhere, including the beach in Thailand. In 2013, he added a podcast for those people too lazy to read, which has now become the top-rated travel podcasts on iTunes! He’s ridden camels in the desert in India, scuba dived on the Great Barrier Reef, and drunk (lots of) wine in Tuscany – all made possible by the fact that they fly anywhere in the world for under $100.

For the longest time I have poo-pooed the idea of travel hacking. For me, it meant you were supposed to go out and sign up for as many travel credit cards as possible. Then, you would try to spend as much as money on each credit card to “chase the rewards.” I remember thinking: Wow! I can spend $40,000 on a credit card and score a free plane ticket - no thanks! Then I met Travis. Side note: I met Travis at a little dive bar in Philadelphia last summer through a mutual friend. When he first told me he was a travel hacker...well... I wasn’t overly impressed. Until now! You see, Travis didn’t get his first credit card until he was 28-years-old and to this day he WILL NOT carry a balance or pay a dime of credit card interest. And yet, he and his family of 3 still travels all over the world on $5 plane tickets, cheap apartment rentals, and some other little-known travel hacks that completely took me by surprise. Here’s what we have in store for you: • How to get the absolute cheapest plane tickets • Where to look for cheap flights • How to get notified about the little-known flight hacks • How to find cheap apartment rentals • A secret they use for plane tickets using Wikipedia! • How they stayed in a 5-bedroom mansion in Breckenridge with access to the BMW and Hot Tub for free • What Travis recommends as everyone's first step to travel hacking

Before I started traveling, I listened to a lot of travel podcasts, watched a lot of travel YouTube channels and bought a lot of travel books - both audiobooks, e-books, and paper books. One book I got in both the audio and the paper version. That book was Vagabonding by Rolf Potts, and it inspired me to call myself The Radio Vagabond. I met Rolf Potts at the travel media conference TravelCon in Austin Texas just before he was to give the closing keynote in front of a room full of travel bloggers, YouTubers, and podcasters. It was fantastic to meet one of my heroes. One who inspired me a lot in my planning to go traveling. If you want to be inspired too, get the book Vagabonding. In my opinion, it's the best book about living this lifestyle. Period. Find the paper version on Amazon and the audiobook on Audible. Travis Sherry is a “Professional Traveler,” and that title really does cover about as many categories as you might expect. From his travel podcast Extra Pack of Peanuts to his new app Jetto for finding flight deals (and just about everything in between), Travis has made a name for himself as a travel hacking expert and internet entrepreneur. Yet despite his location independent status, Travis calls Philadelphia home, and that’s where we met up for today’s episode. Being as big a fan of beer as I am, Travis and I “rendezbrewed” at Love City Brewing just north of Philly’s Center City. We cover everything from airline travel hacks to drinking Eastern European moonshine in Montenegro, and as a new dad, Trav even shares some tips on continuing to traveling internationally with children. But eventually all roads lead back to Philly, so make sure to tune in if you want to get a local’s take on the best cheesesteaks around town. After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!

When asking how our lives might look different if we were to follow our hearts and dreams, so many of us point to travel. For most of us, travel represents freedom in one way or another - the ability to do whatever we want to, go wherever we want to, whenever we want to do it. But many of us never do it - or do it only in the limited, accepted, prescribed way - for a couple weeks of vacation a year, here or there. We feel confined to one place, limited by time, money, and location-dependent obligations. No so for Jason Moore. After college, Jason longed to travel - to take off in the spirit of adventure. Despite $20,000 in student loan debt, Jason took a leap of faith that he could support himself on the road, and took off. What he found on his way was that many of the mind stories that stop us from traveling are actually made up of myths. That is, it's not actually impossible to make money while traveling - in fact, he was able to pay off his student loans while traveling and working on the road. Jason's own experience learning how to travel and experience freedom and location independence soon became his passion to serve and help others. Along the way, he partnered up with fellow traveler and friend, Travis Sherry, and created an online community, “Location Indie”, for people living this so-called alternative lifestyle. Jason comes through in this interview as a down-to-earth, warm, and easy-going guy, and also a deeply knowledgeable and experienced expert in the art of travel and freedom. Enjoy! Listen Money Matters - Free your inner financial badass. All the stuff you should know about personal finance.

Travis Sherry from Extra Pack of Peanuts teaches us how to see the world without spending a lot by seeking out cheaper destinations, scoring the best flight prices, and alternatives to hotels that will save you a fortune. Traveling is on top of nearly everyone’s list of goals but many people don’t because they believe they can’t afford it.  Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive and there are options for almost any budget that will allow you to see the world. If you want to drink on the plane without paying ridiculous airline prices you have a few options.  If you’re flying international, choose an international carrier rather than a domestic one.  The drinks are usually free.  You can also bring those little bottles of alcohol in the quart bag you’re allowed through TSA checkpoints as long as each bottle is 3 ounces or less.  Buy them at your local liquor store, not the airport to save even more. Chat up flight attendants during their downtime.  If you’re charming you can score free drinks from them, maybe free snacks too. For a long flight, first of business class will be a lot more bearable than cattle class.  The difference in ticket price can be as much as fifteen times higher though.  This is where frequent flyer miles come in handy.  A coach round trip ticket bought with miles will be around 35,000 miles,  business just double that.  You can obtain miles through credit card sign up bonuses and by flying the same airline as much as possible.  Check to see what airline has a hub at your local airport and sign up for their free frequent flyer program. Price flights through ITA Matrix.  You can’t book via this site but the price you find can be booked through a site like Kayak or Hipmunk.  ITA Matrix will provide you with lots of comparative data such as the best date to book the flight and the cheapest airport to fly out from. The other big expense when traveling aside from the flight is accommodations.  There are so many better alternatives to hotels, especially for long term stays. Airbnb  rents apartments or homes for way less than a hotel.  You’ll also have more amenities like a full kitchen which allows you to save money by cooking some meals at home. Hostels are cheaper than a hotel and a great way to meet fellow travelers.  You can even house sit and stay for free.  Travis’s friend runs Trusted House Sitters which can show you opportunities all over the world for free accommodations. You can stretch your travel dollars by choosing less expensive regions.  In Western Europe, Spain and Portugal offer greater value than places like Paris or London.  Eastern or Central Europe are about half the price of Western Europe.  South  East Asia will allow you to have a five star experience for a fraction of the price of a lot of places in the world. Packing is always a travel bugaboo.  Travis recommends the Tortuga Travel Back Pack.  Pack what you would need for a week no matter how long your trip.  You can do laundry anywhere. Traveling is something everyone of us deserves to experience.  It changes your life in ways that nothing else can.  Stop thinking it’s an impossible dream.  Travis is flying to Brasil for the World Cup for $5.  Anyone can do it. This is part 2 of my conversation with Travis Sherry. Listen to part 1. Travis Sherry got a late start in life to traveling the world internationally. He was 25 when he finally got bit by the travel bug on a study abroad internship trip, living in Lozan, Switzerland. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to make for himself a life of travel. “Everyday I would go swimming in Lake Geneva," says Travis, "and I'd look up at the Alps and think, ‘I’m not going to get this by just staying home all my life.’" Today, Travis bills himself as a regular guy who loves to travel, but zip on over to Extra Pack of Peanuts. and you’ll see he has just a little expertise in traveling the world for free, and helping his audience do the same. There you can pick up his Ultimate Guide to Points and Miles. He also runs a travel podcast by the same name, and if you like this show, you’d probably like his too. I’m excited to have him on to discuss his lifestyle and how to earn and redeem points and miles to see the world for as close to free as possible. Words from an Explorer “If you’re able to travel cheaper, then you’re able to travel more. And the more you travel, the better we think you’re life will be. And society in general.” What You’ll Learn What you'll find on ExtraPackofPeanuts.com Why Travis argues in favor of local guest houses, for a more authentic experience that puts money in a local's pocket. Hostels don't necessarily involve 10 bunks in a room and dirty backpackers. They can often be better than hotels in many ways. Other ways to go: Housesitting or renting apartments (through Airbnb, GowithOh) Travis' Best Travel Advice The First Step: If it scares you to do it, then stop putting it off and make a concrete reservation that you can't change. Jump in and figure out how to swim. Cheap Airfare: Points and miles! Listen to the show for Travis' advice getting involved. Finding Cheap Airfare: The Flight Deal, ITA Software's Matrix, then book through Kayak or the airline directly. Packing Tips: Always, always travel with just a carry on. Travis' wife is a fashion blogger and Travis has even talked her down from 2 checked suitcases to just a carry on! Check out Tortuga Backpacks.
