Voices of Your Village
322- Embracing Imperfection in Parenthood with Kate Hamilton

Voices of Your Village

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I get to hang out with Kate Hamilton. She is married to Charlie since 2000 and is a mother of two young adult men who are independent, confident, and productive college students. Some might say she's an unlikely writer because of her dyslexia, yet her life experiences compelled her to write The Imperfect Parent: A Nonjudgmental Guide to Raising Children in the Modern World. She earned an MBA in international business and is a former corporate executive turned mother and entrepreneur. When Kate is not coaching parents and their children, you'll find her volunteering with Lemonade Day, a youth entrepreneur program, planning the next family adventure, or working with Charlie in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was fun to chat with Kate because we know that perfection is not the goal. I also really enjoyed this breakdown with Rach, and you get to hear some of my real -time takeaways where Rach was helping me understand some guilt that I've been experiencing as a parent and really diving into like what's coming up for me there. I also just always feel so seen in how Rach responds to me in the moment. So I hope you enjoy the breakdown of this bad boy as well. Welcome to May 1, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate nursery rhymes and sweet success. We all grew up learning rhymes about a cat playing a fiddle and little piggies going to the market, but probably never questioned where they came from. To be honest, the origin of nursery rhymes isn't really clear, since they were passed down by word of mouth for centuries. The first time these children's poems were collected in print was in the book Tales of My Mother Goose way back in 1695. And over the years, that title got turned into the name of an author—the most beloved poet who never existed. If you happen to see cows jumping over the moon or find that your flatware ran off with your plates today, don't worry! It's just National Mother Goose Day! When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. The first Sunday of May invites you to visit the website lemonadeday.org to find new ways to inspire young people and their lemonade stand businesses. This organization teaches them to first, set a goal, second, make a plan, third, work the plan and fourth, achieve your dream. Of course you'll want to get a jump start on the planning so your kids can have every opportunity to succeed. What better way to learn about running a small business than by starting one? On National Lemonade Day don't forget to kick back and sip the juicy rewards!  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. This is the first year we have ever done it and it's for children grade 3rd through 5th, which is going to be coming to Grants Pass on August 20, from 3pm to 6pm. And we actually help them create a business plan, create their product, create their stand, find investors, and then actually sell the lemonade and make a profit. Intro: There's a place in Southern Oregon, filled with gorgeous natural beauty, friendly yet independent people and a mild, comfortable climate. That place is called Grants Pass. These are the stories of the people that live and work Josephine County. These are the movers and shakers that make this place of the best. This is Grants Pass VIP. Brian: Josie Molloy has served as the Chamber President and CEO since August of 2018. Originally from Crane, Oregon, on the southeastern side of the state, Josie grew up on a cattle ranch. She spent over 10 years in Laramie, Wyoming working for a Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation. Since moving to Grants Pass, she's helped develop a lot of new programs, including a Young Professionals Network Group and Lemonade Day. The chamber is going strong with over 600 members and continues to advocate for the business community as well as improving our community as a whole. Josie Molloy, welcome to Grants Pass VIP. Josie: Thanks for having me. Brian: This is a lot of fun because we've got the meet each other over at the Chamber of Commerce. And so this is our first chance that we've been able to have you on the show, besides what we heard from your bio, let everyone know a little bit more about you and where they know you from. Josie: Yeah, so lots of people probably know me through the Chamber of Commerce. Like it said in my bio, I've been here since August of 2018. So I'm almost on my third year anniversary, it's gone by very fast. I'm also expecting my second child, so we've really grown our family since we moved here. I'm originally from Oregon. So this was really moving back to my home state. But my husband Ciaran is from Cheyenne, Wyoming, so it was a big change for him. We've really embraced Grants Pass and everyone has been so friendly. And it's just really fun working in the chambe...

Did You Know That Truffles Can Fetch Up To $350 For A Single Ounce?! Welcome to May 2nd, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate smelly mushrooms and sweet success.    If you're a fan of all things chocolate, then the word “truffle” conjures images of rich round globes of decadent candy.   But if you're a connoisseur of the pungent fungus kind then you know truffles are a culinary love bomb.  Truffles are mushrooms that grow underground, and when they are ready for harvesting,  they give off an odor that is best detected by a pig or a dog.  This rich aroma is what gives them their characteristic flavor and ridiculous high price.  But buyer beware; most truffles lose this flavor after only four days!  For a product that fetches up to $350 an ounce, the market can be full of counterfeits.  It's best to buy them from a reputable supplier.  Or better yet, celebrate National Truffle Day by dining out at your favorite bougie restaurant.  National Lemonade Day is the perfect opportunity to teach kids about the sweet taste of success.  Who wouldn't benefit from the lesson these days that when life give you lemons, you make lemonade.  The first Sunday of May invites you to visit the website lemonadeday.org to find new ways to inspire young people. This organization teaches them to first, set a goal, second, make a plan, third, work the plan and fourth, achieve your dream. Of course you'll want to get a jump start on the planning so your kids can have every opportunity to succeed.  On National Lemonade Day don't forget to kick back and sip the juicy rewards! I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson.  Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

Do you know where pink lemons come from? Two 12 year-olds were left with a sour taste in their mouths after officials shut them down for not having a permit when they started selling lemonade in a dog park to raise cash for new soccer uniforms for their team. Today we celebrate Lemonade Day.  A day which is designed to introduce children to having their own business. I still remember when my boys decided that they were going to sell lemonade at the end of the street when we held a garage sale at their great grandpa’s.  So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Lemonade Day: It is May and the weather is getting nicer, but we are not able to set up a lemonade stand…not yet. What we can do though is talk to our children about what type of business they would run if they could or what kind of business do they think they could run now. The idea is to have a conversation around what would be involved, who their customers might be, and how would they let their customers know that they were open for business. Fun Fact…. The Greeks were the first to make pink lemonade. They made this so that while the adults were having wine at celebrations, the children would also have a special treat. When the Greeks dyed the lemonade pink by adding wine, the common myth in the community was that this drink was made from pink lemons that grew in a forest that no man could enter and come out alive. They made the children believe that these magical pink lemons were brought back by a noble king. Now there is marketing If you like today’s wellness tips, let me know. The Joy Revolution and TEDxOcala proudly present... The Golden Mic Podcast w/ Marc Cordon Ep. 047 Everyday Is Lemonade Day w/ Carson Hamilton https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0047_hamilton Carson Hamilton is making lemonade out of lemons. No really. I'm not being metaphorical here. He is LITERALLY making lemonade out of lemons. As a six year old, he was making fresh manually squeezed thirst-quenching lemonade. And his lemonade business wasn't even his first stab at entrepreneurship. At an even younger age, Carson and his brother took the styrofoam packing material from their new refrigerator. They cut it up. Taped pieces together. And went around the neighborhood to sell it as modern art! Carson first heard of TEDx when he was serving lemonade while the founder of https://lemonadeday.org (Ya. It's kind of a big deal!) gave his TEDx talk. The universe is awesome isn't it. And it's benevolent too as the person serving lemonade at a TEDx event will be giving his own talk in Ocala. He has an enthusiastic demeanor - one that you may find with anyone his age. But don't let his youthful energy fool you.  There's something about Carson. It's not childlike wonderment. Or is it Pollyanna-esque daydreams. If I had to put a finger on it, it's the unwavering belief that he has in himself to do whatever he wants. And that kind of sovereignty and trust is something people three times his age would wish for.  So when he says he aspires to be a sports commentator, I believe in his conviction. What is truly amazing is that before the pandemic Carson was giving workshops to second to sixth graders on how to create their business, and he's starting them off by teaching them how to successfully run a lemonade stand. So if Carson's dream that every kid gets entrepreneurial experience out of the classroom, pretty soon EVERYDAY WILL BE LEMONADE DAY! If ever a time to subscribe to The Golden Mic Podcast, it's now as I have the privilege of having a conversation with many of the speakers you'll see at TEDxOcala 2020: Voice. It s pretty well agreed that the early years of development are fundamental in shaping a child s future. That extends from playground to classroom, to career choices. If you want to Cultivate a culture where kids can see themelves as entrepreneurs you have to start early. That s what Lemonade Day is all about. It s a nationwide event with chapters all over the country, including Baton Rouge, that teaches kids the basics of starting their own business. What better way to do that than with a Lemonade Stand Jordan Piazza is executive director of Lemonade Day Louisiana, which has grown steadily over the past few years and now reaches thousands of school children around the state. Jordan knows a thing or to about entrepreneurism. He is the business manager for the Baton Rouge office of one of Baton Rouge s most successful entrepuerial companies Raising Cane s Chicken Finger. Along with his brother, Jordan is also getting ready to open a new restaurant a remake of classic Phil s Oyster Bar that their father owned and operated for many years. If Phil and Lemonade Day succeed in giving kids the entrepreneurial bug, will those kids when they re grown have options to turn enthusiasm into education Given the current disarray in Baton Rouge and dismal fiscal condition of the continually threatened State education budget, that is a great unknown. Rachel Kincaid is tasked with turning the unkown into the known. Rachel is Vice President of External Affairs for the Univeristy of Louisiana system. Rachel is in charge of developing and overseeing the management of a comprehensive legislative and federal relations strategy that will support the academic and research mission of the System s nine campuses, which include University of New Orleans, the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Southeastern Univeristy in Hammond, and Louisiana Tech in Ruston. This conversation is a unique, candid, and cautionary insight into one of Louisiana s universal questions, "What s going on in Baton Rouge " Photos at Mansurs On The Boulevard by Ken Stewart.
