Scaling Businesses Across Industries: Lessons from a Serial Entrepreneur   In this episode of The Profit Answer Man, we sit down with Philip Taylor (PT), a CPA turned entrepreneur, to discuss his journey in building multiple successful businesses. From launching a finance blog in 2007 to creating major conferences like FinCon and TravelCon, and now running a CPA firm for content creators, PT shares his insights on diversification, adapting to industry changes, and maintaining profitability.   If you're an entrepreneur looking to build multiple income streams, navigate the shifting digital landscape, and optimize your financial strategies, this episode is packed with actionable insights!   In this episode, you will learn: How Philip built and scaled multiple businesses in blogging, events, and accounting. The major shifts in blogging and digital content creation over the years. How AI and search engines have disrupted traditional content models. Strategies for running a profitable conference and event business. Key financial mistakes content creators make—and how to avoid them. The importance of tax planning, retirement strategies, and financial systems for entrepreneurs. Why building a financial war chest is crucial for long-term success.   Key Takeaways: 1. Diversification is Key to Long-Term Success. Philip didn't rely on just one business—he built multiple streams of income: PTMoney.com – A personal finance blog that started in 2007. FinCon – A major annual conference for personal finance content creators. TravelCon – A travel content creator event. The Creator CPA – A tax and accounting firm focused on digital entrepreneurs. Each of these businesses operates differently, but Philip has found ways to integrate them so they support each other. 2. The Changing Landscape of Blogging and AI's Impact. Blogging used to be a hub for conversations, but social media took that engagement away. AI-powered search engines now provide direct answers, reducing website traffic for independent bloggers. Google prioritizes big media brands over independent creators, making it harder for small content sites to rank. Many creators are shifting to email newsletters, YouTube, and social media platforms where they can directly engage audiences.   3. Running a Profitable Conference Business. Philip runs two major creator-focused events, but COVID and rising travel costs disrupted the event industry. His advice: Build financial reserves so you can weather downturns. Continuously evolve your model—smaller events, hybrid events, or alternative pricing strategies may be needed. Understand the true cost for attendees—it's not just the ticket price; flights, hotels, and food add up significantly.   4. Financial Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make. Philip sees common financial pitfalls among entrepreneurs, especially content creators: Not setting aside 20% of income for taxes. Ignoring retirement planning (e.g., Solo 401(k)s, SEP IRAs). Mixing personal and business expenses. Failing to build a financial war chest to handle downturns. Solution: Work with a CPA, separate personal and business finances, and prioritize long-term financial stability over short-term spending.   5. Tax Planning vs. Tax Preparation. Most CPAs focus on tax prep (reactive) instead of tax planning (proactive). Strategic tax planning can help business owners reduce taxable income, plan for retirement, and optimize deductions. Meet with your CPA in September/October to plan before year-end. Tip: If your business revenue fluctuates, consider using Roth conversion strategies during low-income years to maximize tax advantages.   About Philip Taylor: Philip Taylor (PT) is a CPA, entrepreneur, and founder of FinCon. He also runs The Creator CPA, a tax firm specializing in financial services for content creators. His insights have been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, The Washington Post, and other major media outlets.   Conclusion: Philip Taylor's journey proves that multiple revenue streams, financial planning, and adaptability are key to long-term entrepreneurial success. Whether you're a content creator, business owner, or service provider, his advice on tax planning, cash flow management, and business diversification can help you increase profitability and protect against economic downturns.   Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ptmoney/ Twitter: https://x.com/ptmoney   https://taylorassociatescpa.com/cpa-for-content-creators/     Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available! Chris “Mercer” Mercer, co-founder of MeasurementMarketing, is a sought after measurement marketing expert. Mercer (as he's known) and his team have been helping marketers, marketing teams, and agencies measure their marketing so they know what's working and what's not. First by planning out what's important to measure in their marketing, then how to actually measure it (using tools like Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics), creating dashboards that are actually useful, and pulling actionable insights from what's being measured to begin forecasting and optimizing future results. Mercer spends countless hours reading, practicing, adjusting and innovating to improve his skill set. He has a knack for teaching, and is known for his ability to simplify even the most complex ideas for his audience. He can be found speaking at conferences and events, such as Traffic & Conversion, Social Media Marketing World, Content Jam, TravelCon, Digital Elite Camp, Baby Bathwater Institute, and others.   Most passionate about I'm very passionate about the art of systems as it relates to measurement, but also as it relates to entrepreneurship and building brands that are very customer-centric and listening to customer journeys. I think that is absolutely what I am obsessed with right now—figuring out how to perfect those things. Mercer's career and story My main background is sales management. I come from everything managing sort of a pipeline by nature. When we moved online, I created a WordPress site to show people how to do WordPress sites, essentially. It was like a membership site. That led very quickly to people saying, “This is a lot of work. Can you build our sites for us?” We created an agency and that's where we sort of grew, digital marketing-wise. We said, “Okay, we're going to build the site and we will also help you optimize the site”—something called “conversion rate optimization.” In order to optimize, and in order to improve, like, an opt-in rate or a conversion rate for a purchase, you have to know what that rate is. We set up Google Analytics for our clients. We would deliver the site with their Google Analytics and say, “Here's how you can tell any leads you got from Facebook.” Almost overnight, when we made that shift, we started getting a lot of referrals from clients, but they weren't referrals for sites. They were people coming to us saying, “We already have a way but we need help with our Google Analytics.” We wanted to eventually diversify the business because that was a great business. It's still a great channel of revenue for us, but we wanted to be able to diversify. Best advice for entrepreneurs I think the keyword is going to be deceptively simple, but it's listening to your customer. If you take a second to listen, they will tell you, “Yeah, you're kind of on the right track, but maybe do this instead, or do it in this particular way.” All of a sudden, it becomes a lot easier to grow a business when we listen to our market. The biggest, most critical failure with customers It was when I did the exact opposite of what we just talked about—when I wasn't listening. I was telling the customer, “Here's how this thing works.” The thing that comes to mind for us is that we have a certification program where we will work with agencies. I think sometimes, too, ‘If it's our idea, it's a good idea,' but it doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea. It's just our idea. Biggest success with customers We were making some changes to one of our offers. Our do-it-yourself training program is called the Measurement Marketing Academy and it's a just-in-time learning platform to learn all this stuff. We noticed way too many people going to the cart, but we weren't creating more sales. We saw this immediately in our dashboard, and it was weird. It was an odd behavior. So, we went back to our page. We had forgotten to put the price. So, they were going to the cart but not to purchase. They were going...

NB. Hans første bog, “How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter”, blev udgivet i 2013. LINKS:  The Nomadic Network  Nomadic Matt  Se Matts bøger på Amazon. This episode is recorded in November, before the Coronavirus outbreak. Since then, Matt Kepnes has tested positive for COVID19 – but as he's telling on his blog, he's feeling better. - - - - - - -  Matthew Kepnes is an American travel blogger, and among travel bloggers he's a rock star.   He's a New York Times bestselling author and has been featured in the New York Times, CNN, National Geographic, Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and BBC.   Matt was born in Boston in '81 and growing up, he wasn't a big traveller. In fact, at 23, he had never left the United States. But in 2004, he took a trip to Costa Rica, and that experience changed his life.   From that moment on, he was hooked on travel, and when he came back from a trip to Thailand the following year, he finished his MBA, quit his job, and began travelling the world full time and blogging about his experiences.   In short, he became Nomadic Matt, and in 2008, he started NomadicMatt.com to record his stories and monetize his travelling.   Now he built an empire around the Nomadic Matt brand. He runs an online blogging school called Superstar Blogging, where he offers online courses in blogging and also hosts other courses. He does guidebooks, he owns a hostel, and he created TravelCon – a conference for travel bloggers and content creators.   Kepnes' first book, "How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter", was published in 2013.   That was one of the books I bought in the planning of my journey leading up to the day I left in July 2016.   The first time I met him was a week into my journey when I was at a travel bloggers conference in Stockholm. Here I had him on the podcast (it's episode #18), and since then we've met a number of times. Including when he hosted his first TravelCon in Austin two years ago.   He's still "Nomadic Matt" but his life a full-time traveller is over. At least for now. This is the topic for his new book, and since we both were in London for WTM, we decided to meet and catch up.   LINKS:  The Nomadic Network Nomadic Matt Check the list of Matt's books on Amazon. Matt Kepnes ~ Founder of the Famous Travel Blog, Nomadic Matt ~ Current Series ~ 100 Interviews with 100 Major Influencers   Way back in 2008, I first decided I wanted to make money online and travel the world. I used to read some blogs of travelers that were leading the way for this new lifestyle and somehow, I came across a book called ‘How to Travel the World on $50 a Day'. It was written by a guy named Matt Kepnes, also known as Nomadic Matt. Matt ran a blog that helped others travel the world on a budget while he made money from his blog and book while traveling the world. I thought it was genius and I said to myself, ‘Man, this guy has it figured out!”  So I bought his book so I could figure out how to do this as well. A couple of years later, I had a backpack and a one way ticket to Costa Rica. Thanks to Matt and others like him, I was about to start my journey traveling the world while making money online. I never ever thought one day, I would be interviewing Matt on my podcast telling him that story.    That was eleven years ago and today I have been living and traveling to many different countries while business businesses online. It has been the biggest adventure of my life. Today, I get the chance to sit down with Nomadic Matt and talk with him about what he is up to these days. Matt's blog was successful back in 2008, but once I started to travel, I didn't hear too much from him.  It was good to find out that he is still running his blog and built it into an incredibly successful business. Matt now has quite a few books published about travel and runs a successful travel/business conference called TravelCon that sells out in just a few days. If you are interested in building and/or running a successful business while traveling the world, being a travel influencer, and what it is like to be a true digital nomad, this is the show for you.  01:42: Who is Nomadic Matt? 06:52: Matt's Travel/Work/Life Schedule 08:00: Lessons Learned as a Traveler 10:10: Becoming a Full Time Traveler 14:31: What Made Your Blog Stand Out Compared to Others? 15:59: How Does Matt Network While Traveling? 18:03: Strategy to Use to Start a Blog in 2019 18:33: Tips on Creating Good Content 22:23: Creating a Travel Conference 31:54: Tips on Getting Big Names to Events 33:57: What Does Freedom Mean to a Top Travel Influencer? 39:10: Balancing Finances Between Business and Charity 41:46: Matt's Plans for the Future 43:23: Spoilers From the New Book 45:51: Responsibilities of an Influencer   Contact Info: https://www.nomadicmatt.com/ https://travelcon.org/

Today we are talking to New York Times Best Selling author of https://www.amazon.com/How-Travel-World-50-Day/dp/0399173285 (How to Travel the World on $50 a Day), world renowned travel expert and entrepreneur Matt Kepnes, aka Nomadic Matt. Matt has an award winning blog http://www.nomadicmatt.com/ (www.nomadicmatt.com) which hosts countless travel resources, plus guidebooks and e-courses. He has been featured on CNN, National Geographic, The BBC and many more.  Matt just released his new travel memoir  https://www.amazon.com/Ten-Years-Nomad-Travelers-Journey/dp/1250190517 (Ten Years a Nomad – A Traveler's Journey Home) and we asked him on the show to talk about it. Matt's new book is deeply personal which differs from his normal writing style on “the how and the what of travel.” He shares his editor's request to go “deeper.”  He tells us what it was like to head out on his own when people in his life were not as supportive, how he overcame it and whether those people are on board now. He discusses how he overcame his fears of traveling solo and how we were are all just wanting human connection. We learn how friendships are different on the road than at home and that leads towards faster friendships and makes dating look very different. We circle back to his home in Austin and ask if has the semblance of routine he was longing for. At the end of his book, he wrote “19 lessons from 10 years of travel” and number 13 stuck a chord – “It is never too late to change.”  Matt elaborates on that point and how travel gives you the space to be whoever you want to be and if your joke bombs you can just start anew at a different hostel or location. Matt has many endeavors and he shared the genesis and vision of https://travelcon.org (TravelCon) a new travel industry conference that focuses on professional development and how to sustain and grow your travel business. He also touched on the mission behind his non-profit https://takeflyte.org/ (Flyte) which helps under-served teens get to experience “the gift of travel.” We learn who is inspiring him right now and some inspirational book recommendations such as https://www.amazon.com/Vagabonding-Rolf-Potts/dp/8415355262/ref=sr_1_4?hvadid=78202817349202&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=vagabonding&qid=1567383932&s=gateway&sr=8-4 (Vagabonding) by Rolf Potts, https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Found-Pacific-Crest-Trail/dp/0307476073/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=78065376905134&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=wild+by+cheryl+strayed&qid=1567384005&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (Wild) by Cheryl Strayed, https://www.amazon.com/Bill-Bryson-Sunburned-Reprinted-12-2-2000/dp/B00HTJNM82/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=77927940091926&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=in+a+sunburned+country&qid=1567384057&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (In a Sunburned Country) by Bill Bryson and https://www.amazon.com/Innocents-Abroad-Wordsworth-Classics/dp/1840226366/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=3527180630&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=innocence+abroad&qid=1567384139&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (The Innocents Abroad) by Mark Twain. Before I started traveling, I listened to a lot of travel podcasts, watched a lot of travel YouTube channels and bought a lot of travel books - both audiobooks, e-books, and paper books. One book I got in both the audio and the paper version. That book was Vagabonding by Rolf Potts, and it inspired me to call myself The Radio Vagabond. I met Rolf Potts at the travel media conference TravelCon in Austin Texas just before he was to give the closing keynote in front of a room full of travel bloggers, YouTubers, and podcasters. It was fantastic to meet one of my heroes. One who inspired me a lot in my planning to go traveling. If you want to be inspired too, get the book Vagabonding. In my opinion, it's the best book about living this lifestyle. Period. Find the paper version on Amazon and the audiobook on Audible. LINKS: Sponsor Hotels25.com  See pictures on TheRadiovagabond.com Follow The Radio Vagabond on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.     Next Friday you can listen in as I talk to another guy that has inspired me a lot. I started listening to his podcast Extra Pack of Peanuts, and he's got a company and another podcast with our mutual friend Jason Moore from Zero-to-Travel called Travel Indi and through their project “The Paradise Pack” they help people live a location independent lifestyle. He's even got an app that helps you find cheap flights called Jetto. He's an overall nice guy, and his name is Travis Sherry. On Monday morning you'll get another regular travel podcast where I'm heading to Washington DC, and pass through Charlottesville. You know the city where there were "fine people on both sides", according to Trump. I had to pass through to see the notorious statues.

As a traveler, I often get asked the question: Isn't it difficult? Isn't it dangerous? How do I do this or that? Then imagine that you're in a wheelchair. - How do you fly as a wheelchair user? - Which hotels are the most accessible? - What beaches have powered beach wheelchairs? - How do you charge your electric wheelchair in a foreign country? - What cities are the most wheelchair friendly around the world? There are so many questions and so many obstacles. But that doesn't stop Cory Lee. He is a wheelchair user and is traveling the world and does a blog called Curb Free With Cory Lee. Here he shares stories to show other disabled people how to travel, where to travel, and most importantly, why a person with a disability should travel. I met Cory at TBEX in Corning New York where he did a truly inspiring keynote and received a standing ovation. And when I met him again at TravelCon in Austin. At the age of two, he was diagnosed with SMA - a rare condition that confined him to a wheelchair. Visit Curb Free With Cory Lee. TravelCon is a brand new conference organized by Nomadic Matt and his team - and was really great. There were a lot of great speakers there, and I already had a few of them on this podcast. Like The Vagabrothers in episode 15, Chris Christensen in episode 16 and the king of travel blogging, Nomadic Matt Kepnes himself in episode 18. And then I talked to a handful of other great people that you can hear in the upcoming Fridays. And of course, every Monday to can follow my journey from North Carolina to Washington DC, Atlantic City, Philadelphia and New York.
