This week is all about bands playing other bands' songs… In fact, we're going to listen to songs that many different artists have covered; compare them, and then ask, “Who did it better???”. In this episode, we showcase the diversity of how a band can take a hit that you've heard a million times and put their own spin on it. Who do you think did it best? What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These are songs you are probably familiar with, but maybe not these versions. In any case, we got ya covered! Songs this week include:Overwhelming Colorfast – “She Said, She Said (The Beatles)” from Overwhelming Colorfast(1992)Gov't Mule – “She Said, She Said (The Beatles)” from Dose (1998) Big Wreck – “Good Times Roll (The Cars)” from Bag Of Tricks (2013)Warrior Soul – “Good Times Roll (The Cars)” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)Halestorm – “Heathens (Twenty One Pilots)” from ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP (2017)Wolves At The Gate – “Heathens (Twenty One Pilots)” from Lost In Translation (2023)Susanna Hoffs & Matthew Sweet – “Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)” from Under The Covers, Vol. 1 (2006)Type O Negative – “Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)” from October Rust (1996)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Our final "Under The Covers" episode part, but surely not the last time M&B will be working with the legendary Ernie Cefalu. In this episode, we chat with the Godfather of Album covers about future news in the making! Ernie has the largest Original album art collection and numerous art pieces. We walk through the recent past as he paints a picture of recent Art museum shows including Forest Lawn, The Smithsonian Rock and Soul, Gallery 13 and The Disciple. Part 10n tells a great story! This history explored here should and will last for ever. Although Ernie constantly showed his appreciation to Musicians And Beyond (and others) for keeping his story alive and getting it out to the world, MnB will forever be grateful to been entrusted to do this. We are fortunate to be able to call Ernie a friend. [GROUP PICK] From "Working Man" to Ayn Rand, Rush runs the gambit on expressing a variety of philosophies in it's music. If you know anything about Ayn Rand's philosophy, objectivism, you know it's pure selfishness (literally) and very anti...anything remotely socialist or communist (as in, took part in the second red scare... yikes). But if you know anything about Rush, you know they are champions of the working class, with their blue collar hit "Working Man" in 1974, an anthem to the proletariat (working class, but more fun to say), and "Tom Sawyer" in 1981, an anthem to the common man. So how can one band have such conflicting ideas between songs? Well... Rush... is complicated. After locking-in to their classic line-up of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart (RIP), they started expanded their influences from their blues-rock background to something... proggier. They began telling tales with their songs, using everything from science fiction, to fantasy, to philosophy, to tell them. And they drew inspiration from many sources, some from different perspectives. In 2112, they are drawing "Anthem," a short totalitarian dystopia written by Ayn Rand, in which individuality and electricity has been erased from society and everything in your life is dictated by shadowy elder councils. Rush takes this story and turns it into a similar tale about music being erased from the world. In both stories, the protagonist finds what has been erased and tries to share it with the elders, who only punish him for not falling in line. It's a tale that many people can relate to, humble working class or selfish billionaire... and then theres side B. Whatever you know about Rush, you know that when they tell you a story, they make it their own, and they make it loud... [JON's PICK] It's 4/20 everybody and you know what that means its time to spark up a doob and put on some... Dixie Chicks? That's right everyone today we're going to be covering their last album, the 5-grammy-winning hit album "Taking the Long Way." The album has secured it's legacy by being very personal, while also being a response to the political pressures of the time, and being a massive success despite the country music industry completely shutting them out. Before the positive response from Green Day's anti-Bush "American Idiot" in 2004 the Dixie Chicks faced huge backlash over far less of a statement in 2003, when they were putting on a performance in England. This was during the lead up to the invasion of Iraq on false pretenses and lead singer Natalie Maines expressed her concern saying, "We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." The Country Music Industry erupted in anger, painting them as unpatriotic for voicing their opinion on foreign soil, and took them off of the airwaves, boycotted them in churches, and even got people together to destroy their records. All of their country friends turned their back on The Dixie Chicks and they felt it. Apparently, if you didn't follow Tobey Keith's "boot in your ass, it's the American way" response to 9/11, your opinion was wrong and you were shunned in Country music. But that didn't stop The Dixie Chicks from digging into that rebel Country spirit and creating one of their best works, and making Country wish that it wasn't their last. Fortunately, since recording this episode, they've announced a new album coming out May 1st, and we can see what they've been up to all this time. Join Brad, Jon, and Scott as they finally dive into the realm of pop Country... [JOHN'S PICK] The 2000s was a very strange time for anyone that was growing up in it. You were old enough to remember the US economy being in pretty good shape during the 90s with relative peace on the home front, directly followed by the events of 9/11 and a completely new era, full of unending war, vengeful patriotism, increasing distrust of our neighbors, and what seemed at the time to be the worst possible president, George W Bush. Times were-a-changing fast; the Bush Administration had recently waged a war with Iraq using bogus intel unrelated to the 9/11 attacks and some people were waking up from the patriotic shock that the attacks had put them in and started to realize that this "war on terror" was a lot more complicated than they had been told... Green day was already in a strange place when 9/11 happened. Their previous album "Warning" (2000) was a commercial flop, and their master tapes for the next nearly-finished record were stolen from the studio in November 2002, which was going to be called "Cigarettes and Valentines" and musically went back to their roots. Instead of rerecording the album a second time, they took the advice of their long time producer, Rob Cavallo, and started again from scratch. This time, they got into a much more collaborative headspace and took in what was happening in the world around them, which was falling apart more and more day by day. Whether it intended to or not, "American Idiot" became the musical icon for the Bush years. With their politically charged music videos and tours, Green Day went from garage punk to stadium rock punk and became the voice of many peoples' frustrations with the government... Join Brad, Jon A, John G, and Scott as we reminisce about what it was like to grow up in the US during 9/11... [GROUP PICK] Paul McCartney is one of those figures in music that has a long legacy and countless connections to other prominent musicians through the decades. Being caught up in the British invasion and Beatlemania, he was one of the first musicians to earn worldwide celebrity (along with his other lads from Liverpool) that was immediate and truly fanatical. He rode this wave of popularity right on through The Beatles' almost two decades of nonstop hits, but eventually the ride came to a halt. For Paul (as well as John and Ringo), the legacy of The Beatles became a sort of albatross around his neck. His first several solo albums, although topping the charts upon release, were not getting great reviews by the music critics of the time. With the formation of Wings, which included the addition of Denny Laine from The Moody Blues, they continued to face criticism, some about his inclusion of his wife, Linda, in the band, and some bashing Paul's post-Beatles songwriting abilities, but that all changed when Paul re-united with Beatles' producer/arranger George Martin in 1972 for the big and brash “Live and Let Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. It kind of brought back some of that Beatles style that the critics were aching for and got Paul in the headspace for him, Linda, and Laine to create Wings first truly beloved and critically appreciated album, Band on the Run. It harkens back to some of the greatest moments in The Beatles' discography, as well as establishing his new sound moving forward. This album earned Paul back his respect in the eyes of critics and ensured that he would continue to be a force in the music industry, and it doesn't disappoint...
