It's Pod Club time when we dive into last week's episode and focus on the real gems of what we learned from Stephanie De La Cruz, Founder of De La Creamery ice cream, with flavors inspired by her Mexican heritage. Just like your favorite book club, you'll want to sit back, grab your favorite bevvie and join in the discussion. If you missed last week's episode with Stephanie De La Cruz, no worries! This episode stands on its own. This week is all about leaning into cultural identity to discover true success on your terms. We are taught to aspire to what we see around us. But, it's a different culture than our DNA, so we end up just copying behaviors and not living our true identity. Stephanie had a great career, hitting all the marks, but she knew she had more to give than what her roles required. Then, she received the catalyst that lit her up and guided her back to her cultural identity and with that, real success. It's all about learning to live WHO you are, rather than, WHAT you are. And she's not alone as I discovered at the 2023 NCCWSL event at University of Maryland where I presented my workshop, Cultural Identity: Authenticity is Your Superpower. The exciting discovery is that we are all together in this journey, with support and kindness to help each other find their true identity. Plus, a sneak peek into next week's episode with award winning author of 'Uncolonized Latinas', Valeria Aloe. Her story gives grace to be easier on yourself and believe that your best life comes when living true to who you are.Step into your truth, ladies!Consuelo is a first gen Peruvian, structural engineer and mother (and even abuelita! now) who encourages Latinas to authentically speak their truth by embracing their cultural identity, a source of fiery strength and profound joy. Valeria Aloe's Biography Valeria Aloe is an award-winning author, speaker, and entrepreneur. She is the creator of a bilingual mindset transformation platform for Latinas and other diverse women who are first-generation in academic and professional spaces. Valeria is the author of Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming Our Mindsets And Rising Together, an award-winning book that decodes cultural limiting beliefs holding Latinas back from a life of fulfillment and success. Her book offers powerful insights into unlearning cultural mindsets, not just for Latinas who seek to thrive in their careers and lives, but also for allies whose goal is to become more assertive mentors, and for professionals looking to better serve the Latino market. Her work to empower and elevate the Hispanic community has earned her several awards, including “Top 50 Women in Business in New Jersey in 2020”, “5th most influential Hispanic in New Jersey in 2021” and “Truth and Integrity of the Written Word, by Golden Door Global Awards in 2022.” Highlights Stories: We need to tell our stories. In the Latino culture, oftentimes, what happens in the home stays at home. But there's so much power in knowing where people are coming from. And you have to share your stories to reawaken your imagination. Ally: Consider how you can bring other moms into your tribe. Find people who are in positions of power in the field of your choice. You have so much to learn from them, and they have a lot to learn from you. Limiting belief: One of the commonalities is a shared mindset or the ancestral limiting beliefs that we bring from our culture and that hold us back in addition to the trauma. Indoctrination: You could still be a Catholic but may now have a newer and better understanding of your faith. Control: All of these stories that we have, culturally, even as adults, even though we may feel that we're in control, the collective unconscious that we bring from our culture controls and influences our decisions. Narrative: There are all these cultural narratives in our unconscious of things like feeling inadequate, feeling lacking, and feeling we need to be thankful to be allowed to be in this country. Safety: Many children of legal immigrants, or even parents, insert themselves into the system working very hard but trying to remain invisible because the system was not open and friendly with Latinos coming in. And so they feel it's safer to be invisible. Shame: Many Latinos have a hard time really embracing who we are. And we feel we need to change who we are to be accepted or to belong. And shame is the underlying cause of feeling we need to change who we are. Therapy: There's a stigma in our community with therapy and there is also shame in saying that you go to a therapist because of the stigma. But all of us need to process everything we're going through. Future: Your well-being will dictate the success of the next generation. Children of immigrants help their parents navigate the system. We need to shape them to become leaders. Trauma: At an early age, they have navigated different cultures to communicate with different audiences. But they could have certain traumas that need to be healed as well. Unity: 24% of the Latino community self-identifies as Afro-Latino. And they fall through the cracks because they don't feel they are Latino enough, or they're Black enough. We need to unite as Latinos and rise together. Motherhood: As mothers, there are limiting beliefs from our culture that to be good mothers, we have to be there full-time and make hot dinners every night. But that could be too much and it could lead to burnout. Delegation is important. Time: Find those little moments to sit down and talk with your kids. Have meaningful conversations with them. Self: We forget to put ourselves first to then take care of others. And there is guilt in putting yourself first in our culture and that it's selfish. Team: To be a successful mother and a successful professional is not something you can do on your own. It's a team effort. Mindset: We, as Latinas, need to open our mindsets and create a life that makes us happy individually. Culture: Merge the culture of the heart (nurturing family and friends) and the culture of the mind (results, career progression, numbers). Opportunities: Being willing to discover possibilities. Allow yourself to flow with whatever is present. If you combine this idea of this desire to touch a lot of people with the power of the business mind, you could be the master of scale. Meet Valeria Aloe, an author with over 20 years of experience in Corporate America, who encourages us to address our mindset to fight for what we deserve. Valeria is a native of Argentina whose first big move was from the small town of General Belgrano to Buenos Aires, where she became the first in her family to obtain not one but two college degrees. After quitting her job, Valeria became more involved with the latinx community and realized that we tend to hold certain beliefs that can hold us back from achieving our goals. That experience led her to write her book Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming our Mindsets and Rising Together Check out Valeria's Book: https://www.amazon.com/Uncolonized-Latinas-Transforming-Mindsets-Together/dp/1637308442 Check out the Uncolized Latinas website: www.UncolonizedLatinas.com Please take our survey: https://forms.office.com/r/qUxvY6Rq9W Leave a review: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080
In today's episode, we chat with Valeria Aloe, the author of https://www.amazon.com/Uncolonized-Latinas-Transforming-Mindsets-Together/dp/1637308442/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3KU8FLW2NS1OM&keywords=uncolonized+latinos&qid=1645987183&sprefix=uncolo%2Caps%2C1531&sr=8-1 (Uncolonized Latinas; Transforming Our Mindsets And Rising Together. ) Valeria possesses over 20 years of experience in finance, marketing, and business development, she is also a trainer and public speaker. Valeria was born in Argentina and after getting her Business degree, she came to the US to get her Masters from Dartmouth University. Her grandmothers are her biggest inspiration because of the sacrifices they made. According to Valeria, the Latin American countries and Hispanic culture holds limiting beliefs about who they are and what achievements they can get when they go to the US. The thesis of the book is for Latinos to become more aware of limiting cultural beliefs that hold them back, and then letting them go. In her book, Valeria mentions systemic biases and the best way to overcome them is by working on yourself. Not waiting for the system to change, to become responsible for overcoming those limiting beliefs, not being afraid to speak up and ask for what you need to succeed. Once you have identified your limiting beliefs, and have started working on yourself, you must take assertive action which involves two steps: Learning to create your own brand, to bring your full self to the table. This is about finding your value, understanding what you bring to the table, knowing, knowing what makes you, YOU, and looking to the unique skillset and the values that have to offer. Creating and finding Allyship. Latinas need to do more by going out there and connecting with allies, and asking for what they need, whether it's asking for sponsorship, getting mentorship, learning from others, observing what works for those who are non-Latino, navigating the system by learning and expanding your network outside of the Hispanic community. Valeria's book writing process was new for her, having corporate background which had taught her to think sequentially but when she started writing her book, the creation process was messy and uncomfortable. She learned that she had to sit and be open to receiving information without trying to put it into categories. Her publishing company gave her a lot of support by giving writing workshops, coaching from other writers. In conclusion, the advice she would give to creatives is to pay attention to your instincts. Don't try to silence the intuition that you have, follow the intuition in that messy process. It will guide you to the path that is important for people. As for the allies, offer Latinas help, be willing to lend a hand, to offer guidance, since they don't speak up and ask for what we need. To other Latina women, her message is to believe in themselves, to realize the power they have individually and collectively as a community, and not be afraid to bring their full selves to the world because what they have to offer is needed. It matters. It makes a difference. Motivated by her progress Valeria dedicated more than two decades of her life to a successful corporate career that led her to work with 7 countries, occupying leadership positions in companies such as Procter & Gamble, Citibank, and Reckitt Benckiser. She focused so fully on her career that other areas of her life eventually started to feel the consequences, particularly health. What on the outside looked like an enviable successful life, on the inside was a life devoid of direction and true meaning. In 2016, Valeria suffered a burnout that radically affected her life, and prompted her to embark fully on a mission of discovering a method to achieve a fulfilled life in all areas, beyond work and career. In this journey of experimentation and studies, she consolidated techniques and tools that helped discover, clarify and manifest true life purpose, opening doors to extraordinary achievements, but this time, without sacrifices or excessive efforts. I am so excited to share one of the top coaches for the Latin community, Valeria Aloe. Her story of success is incredible, but so is her coaching. I loved this conversation and the powerful perspective Valeria shared about being the first in her family to break through paradigms and achieve goals that no one had ever accomplished before. On today's episode I have the great pleasure of having Valeria Aloe as a guest. She is the author of Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming Our Mindsets And Rising Together. Her journey begins in General Belgrano, Argentina. In this episode she discusses the journey of her immigration to the United States. Our conversation was so uplifting and full of promise for us all. She gives many nuggets of wisdom and her positive outlook in her journey is quite remarkable. As she tells me her journey we cover holding on to our Latinidad in setting that are different from what we are use to. We discuss our safe spaces that remind us of home. For example, my safe space in Colorado was a Latino market down the street. from my apartment. I went there when I wanted to hear our language, our music, and smell the spices. Have you been in a different setting and yearned for your normal? Where was your special Latina safe space. We both agree that the responsibility of being bilingual is hard work! We discuss our separate exhausting experiences being bilingual. Our brains are impressive but being a bilingual brain is incredibly impressive. Our conversation leads to to the expectations of being bilingual and the role it plays in our lives. Valeria Aloe's book came out last week, January 12th and is now available on Amazon!!!
