This is a rebroadcast of one of our favorite episodes. Enjoy while we work on season 8!  Meet Dr. Alfredo Angeles-Boza, a university professor who reminds us that even if you derail from your plans, it is not too late to get back on track. Dr. Alfredo was born to a middle-class family who supported his education, until the socio-economic situation in Peru made it impossible to pay the university fees of both their sons. A t that time, Alfredo had stopped prioritizing his studies, and as a family, they decided that his brother should continue with his university studies while Alfredo would take a break. Ironically, he won a trip to Spain, and considered migrating and finding a job, but witnessing the working and living conditions that immigrants had to endure made him reconsider his priorities in life. After that experience, Alfredo focused on his studies, graduated from university, found a job in Peru, earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Texas A&M university, and became a tenured professor. By listening to his story one would think Alfredo is a bold individual, but the reality is that he is often scared, but he does not let that stop him from seeking opportunities and achieving his goals.

He loved playing baseball and dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but when he realized his fastball fell a little short of MLB standards, he focused his attention on his passion for STEM.  One summer, he participated in the MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science (MITES) program, which was his first experience with the university, but not the last, as he continued on to earn his Bachelors and Master's degrees from MIT, followed by a PhD at Loughborough University, in the UK.  Dr. Vasquez‘s passion for sports continued while he was pursuing his education. He was the captain of the baseball team at MIT, an activity that gave him balance and sense of community, and he also conducted research related to sports. It was his passion for sports, and materials science and engineering what exposed him to AM early on in his career, and eventually led him to found his own consulting business, to help companies ease the pain points associated with implementing the technology. One of those pain points is finding AM professionals, which are not many, partly due to the novelty of the technology, but mostly due to the lack of knowledge and information available for the general population.  Dr. Vasquez noticed this gap and launched AMx - The Advance Manufacturing Experience, a program designed to create awareness of the types of careers available in AM, and to help individuals develop valuable skills that are sorely needed in the industry. One thing is clear, the AM field is not just for scientists and engineers, and there is a vast need for people who love to pull up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.  AMx was implemented in partnership with local Chicago businesses, and it was initially focused on collaborating with communities in the West side of Chicago. Dr. Vasquez next goal is to make this program available nation-wide. Meet Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez, a professor of history who experienced life events that demonstrated the fragility of democracy itself, and who now is committed to protecting it.  Dr. Martinez-Fernandez was born in Cuba and two years later, his family migrated to Miami as a consequence of the Cuban Revolution. They moved to Lima, Peru afterward, only to flee another anti-democratic event, which led them to move to Puerto Rico, where he completed his Bachelors and Master degrees in History.    Years later, he embarked in yet another migration, this time by choice, to North Carolina, to pursue his PhD in History at Duke University, and he has been living in the continental U.S. ever since.  Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez became a historian because he wanted to understand his life story, and this led him to specialize in the History of Latin America and the Caribbean.  We talked about the various events that we have experienced, as citizens of Venezuela, and Cuba, and about the political trauma that we and our families have experienced throughout our lives, and how that trauma sometimes gets in the way of understanding the political situation in the U.S. for what it is, without adding extra color from our experiences.  We also discussed the recent global events that, once again, indicate that democracy is fragile and in need of protection, and we talked about the role that latinx like you and me, play in helping protect it.  It boils down to practicing civil engagement, and stepping into the power, and the responsibility that comes with being the largest minority group in the U.S. and fastest growing one.    Leave a review:  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753  Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080

050: Latina Equal Pay Day 2022, with Jen Hemphill. Meet Jen Hemphill, host of Her Dinero Matters Podcast and accredited financial counselor who helps Latinas gain more money confidence.  Jenn was born in Colombia to a “Gringo” dad -as she called him- and a Colombian mother, and lived in Bogotá until her and her family moved to the U.S.  Jen aspired to become a Dentist, but didn't have the stomach for it, literally! This led her to become a Physical Therapist specializing in Gerontology; however, becoming a military spouse made her change her career path to something more aligned with her new lifestyle. This is how she became an accredited financial counselor.  It was thanks to this new career, and the need to attract an audience for her own business, that Jen became a podcaster. This was a consistent medium via which she could create content to help all women gain more money confidence. Not too long after the launch of her podcast, Jen realized that she was in a unique position to help Latinas become Reinas of their money, so she rebranded the podcast, which became what we now know as Her Dinero Matters.  On this especial 50th episode, Jen joined us to talk about the upcoming Latina Pay Day, what it means, and what we can do to ensure we minimize the impact of the wage gap in our lives!  We talked about many topics, including the importance of talking about salaries and advocating for salary transparency. We discussed the importance of negotiating your salary, including benefits, and asking for promotions. We also talked about what we can do to take control of our finances by creating a budget, implementing a plan, and celebrating our wins!  According to the Lean In organization, Latinas make $0.46 per every $1 a non-hispanic white male makes, and 47% of Latina mothers are breadwinners. This means that our families are falling behind! Most factors that contribute to the existence of the wage gap are systemic and need to be fixed at a higher level. However, we HAVE to advocate for ourselves because no one else will do it!  Get educated… take action! Meet Carlos Salcines, a Cuban-American born and raised in McAllen, TX whose Latinidad helps him add a multicultural twist to how movies are being advertised in Hollywood.  Carlos was born and raised in McAllen, TX, which meant he was exposed to the Cuban and Mexican cultures, and experienced the complexity of being a Latino in the U.S. early on in life. After graduating from high school, Carlos started College at the University of Texas at Austin, convinced that he would become a doctor, but always had a strong interest in movies and television. It was his cousin who had a tremendous influence in the fate of his career, after inviting him to attend the first ever Latin Grammy's Ceremony in L.A. Once he returned from that trip, and only after reaching a compromise with his Cuban parents, Carlos doubled majored in radio, television and film, as well as advertising.  Upon graduation, he packed his car and moved to L.A. to pursue his career as a creative, and ended up landing a job in advertising. Today, he is the V.P. of Multicultural Marketing at Warner Bros. Pictures. He has been involved in marketing movies like “In The Heights”, “Father of the Bride” and “Black Adam” to diverse audiences.  Given the focus of his job, the topic of representation is top of mind, because he believes seeing ourselves represented in all fields is extremely important, as it can help us dream of what was once unthinkable.  We discussed the lack of representation of the Latinx community in media and entertainment, and the frustration and disappointment we feel every time a show that centers Latinx stories gets cancelled. We also discussed what we can do to help see more people like us in media, telling stories that go beyond our suffering and resilience, and it all comes down to embracing the fact that Unidos Somos Mas.  Being Latinx in the U.S. is complicated because we are not a monolith, but we can celebrate what unites us, while recognizing our differences. The invitation is to support Latinx shows/movies by watching, and encouraging our friends to watch… just like we do with shows that center other cultures and experiences in their stories.   Leave a review:  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753  Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080

She dreamed of becoming an astronaut since she was a kid, and embarked in experiences that enabled her to eventually land a job at NASA.  After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Dr. Sierra Sastre became a teacher, and although her tenure was short-lived, she is a lifelong educator and is highly involved in STEM outreach activities.  She then left the comforts of the tropics to pursue a PhD in Nanomaterial Sciences at Cornell University, and was excited about winter, because she once dreamed of living in Alaska! Being uncomfortable isn't something she shies away from, which is how she ended up living at the bottom of a volcano, simulating the living conditions future humans will encounter in Mars.  Throughout her career, Dr. Sierra Sastre never stopped pursuing her dream of becoming an astronaut, and applying for jobs at NASA, but for most of her career those applications didn't materialize. However, she never gave up, and after 5 years of working as a project manager at the U.S. Money Factory, she finally joined NASA to support multiple missions, including the Mars Sample Return Mission that will bring samples back to earth collected by the Perseverance Rover.  Dr. Sierra Sastre embodies the resilience and perseverance characteristic of the Latinx community. He carries his Asian and Latin roots wherever he goes, and tries to help and represent both communities as best he can. In fact, Dr. Lin Shiao played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic that extolled both cultures. He helped develop early stage diagnostics at Berkeley University that were used to test first responders, and the adjacent communities being affected by the virus. Unfortunately, being a person of Latinx and Asian descent has not been easy in the last 6 years. First due to the dangerous rhetoric used to refer to latinx people during the 2016 election, and most recently, due to the unfounded acts of hate directed towards the Asian community, as a result of the words chosen by our highest officials to refer to the coronavirus.  Dr. Lin Shiao has also worked to contrast such harmful narratives by co-creating a podcast called Caminos en Ciencia, which highlights the careers of Latinx scientists. He also hopes that the activism of the last couple of years, such as the Stop Asian Hate movement, leads to meaningful change in our society.  Leave a review:  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/latinx-can/id1524232753  Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/latinx-can-1354080

He was raised by his Abuela who helped him develop a sense of belonging with the Dominican community by teaching him Spanish since he was born.  He graduated with a degree in Economics from Northeastern University and upon graduation entered the Tech field. He worked in tech for ca. 10 years at companies such as Facebook and TikTok, and most recently, he became an entrepreneur and the owner of Plurawl. We covered a range of topics in this conversation, including how affirmative action helped him get to College, the difference between inclusion vs. assimilation, and how he aims to be the generation that eliminates code switching by redefining what a “Professional” looks like.   Pabel has accessed a level of courage and vulnerability that we have not seen before, and he is using his experiences to empower the Latinx community to advocate for themselves, while being their authentic selves. Dr. Torres… also known by his pen name J.L. Torres, is a Puerto Rican author and scholar born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York. He tells us his life story, beginning with his experience growing up in the South Bronx, then moving to Puerto Rico as a young adult, and returning to the continental U.S. to pursue his career as a college professor. J.L. Torres helped us dismantle the myth that those who study humanities will face an uncertain financial future, and shares facts about the multiple CEOs of Fortune 500 companies who studied degrees like English and Philosophy. Given his vast experience teaching American and Latinx Literature and Creative Writing, as well as his formal education, we couldn't pass on the opportunity to discuss the term LATINX, its purpose, and the strong reactions it provokes on many people.  We also discussed his recent book Migrations, his upcoming novel about the life of Puerto Rican icon Roberto Clemente, and how he chooses to discuss difficult topics in his literary works that the latinx community often prefers to avoid.  Check out J.L.
