Mark Jackson grew up in a rough part of Chicago as the youngest child of a single mom. He thought ducking when hearing gang gunfire was normal. Playing in the NFL was never a dream, in fact, he quit football for a year when he was at Purdue. Despite being shorter than most and claiming very little talent, Mark was drafted by the Broncos in the 6th round of the 1986 draft. His career was on the fast track from the beginning: Mark was part of “The Drive” and played in Super Bowl 21 his rookie season. He'd play in two more Super Bowls, and as Broncos fans painfully remember, all three were losses. During his 7 years in Denver, Mark became a fan favorite as a member of “The Three Amigos” with fellow wide receivers Vance Johnson and Ricky Nattiel. When he became a free agent in 1993, he doubled his salary by heading to the NY Giants where he caught a lot of passes, but was cut mid-season in 1994. He was then picked up by the Colts for a bit and missed out on an opportunity to join one of his favorite childhood teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers. In retirement, Mark's energy is the same as when he played: 110%. He has many ventures, including Jackson Financial Solutions and the non-profit Recruiting Classroom.
Today, we're talking with former NFL wide receiver, Vance Johnson. Vance Johnson was John Elway's go to guy during the Broncos heyday, and is ranked as the 16th best Denver Bronco Player of all time. He was a second round draft pick, broke the Cleveland Browns' heart's on several occasions, and beat Carl Lewis in the 1982 NCAA Championships. None of these accolades though are greater than his redemption arch. Vance has been to the depths of hell and back, struggling with addiction, the death of his son, and processing the trauma of an abusive childhood. Vance's testimony is an astounding example of how God never gives up on us, and we're certain that you'll be moved by his stories. Inspired by a popular 80's film, the Denver receiving crew of Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson and Ricky Nattiel became their own version of "The Three Amigos" for John Elway and the Broncos. From the late 80s to the early 90s, these small but speedy receivers sparked Denver's offense, helping lead to AFC domination and three Super Bowl appearances. In this episode of The Franchise: Denver Broncos, Host Ryan Harris and Guest Host Sandy Clough discuss the Three Amigos and their impact on the team and city during that era. They're joined again by Vance Johnson to provide stories and history from those teams. Visit truthplusmedia.com for more info on this episode and the Show.

Vance Johnson endured life in an abusive household as a kid and drifted into a life of alcohol and drug addiction as an adult. On the outside life looked perfect. He was a young NFL star with charisma and charm on a team that played in three Super Bowls. But while the lights were bright on the exterior the darkness crept in internally. Countless overdoses failed marriages and suicide attempts preceded his moment of clarity and walk with God. This story has the makings of a Hollywood script and Vance Johnson carries the message of sobriety like a leading man. https://www.vanceinspires.org/ https://www.facebook.com/VanceInspires Learn more about your ad choices. The Big Show. The Big Leagues. The Big Time. The Pros. Drinking and Driving. Overdose. Coma. Treatment. All of these are references to the life of today's guest. Vance Johnson is a former wide receiver for the Denver Broncos where he played for 10 seasons. During the “glory years,” Vance was struggling with an addiction to drugs and alcohol so intensely that he walked away from the NFL and a pending contract renewal. He struggled for over 20 years and eventually found himself in the hospital in a medically induced coma for 28 days. Shockingly, even that was not his “rock bottom.” Vance's 7th wife filed for divorce, but not before reaching out to the NFL and asking them to help him. He later admitted to a residential treatment center in Florida, and he has been clean and sober ever since. Vance is now a recovery advocate, drawing on his personal and professional experience to help other people find recovery.Ironically, it is through recovery that we have the ultimate mind-altering experience.www.tpoftampa.comwww.thepointisrecoverypodcast.comwww.facebook.com/TurningPointofTampawww.twitter.com/TurningPointTPAwww.instagram.com/turningpointtpawww.youtube.com/user/TurningPointofTampawww.linkedin.com/company/turning-point-of-tampa-incwww.facebook.com/ThePointisRecoveryPodcastwww.instagram.com/thepointisrecoverypodcastwww.vanceinspires.orgwww.vancejohnsonrecoverycenter.comwww.facebook.com/VanceInspires

John Elway's favorite targets from the mid 1980s-early 1990s, this group of three receivers made Denver football exciting. While not blessed with height, Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson and Ricky Nattiel helped lead the Broncos to three Super Bowl trips in four seasons. All speedy guys, with great route running ability who could work all three levels of the field, the Amigos were a force to be reckoned with in the AFC. Finally someone did and Vance's story of overcoming addiction caught the ear of A & E and when they decided to reboot the series, they approached Vance to be part of the show and help support those that are in need of an intervention on their behalf.

We get caught up in the hard work of sobriety and forget to celebrate all the great things that come with the hard work. All the questions about how will people react, worrying about the future, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable, hating to feel feelings... but what about the clarity of thought? What about waking up without a hangover and not having to piece together the night before? How about showing up to work on time... for once! Living with alcoholism is like being a prisoner of yourself and your own mind. But with sobriety comes this sense of power and control, a clear signal with your brain, and you get the opportunity to be a good person. Who knew?!? This is my last question I ask every guest, and over the years, we've gotten some really good answers. Let's dig back in the archives and hear what some of our guests had to say about their favorite thing about being a sober person. Outrunning the Past with Vance Johnson Former NFL wide receiver Vance Johnson is proof that recovery works. He was picked up by the Denver Broncos in the 1985 draft, and that’s where he remained for the duration of his ten-year career, which included 3 Super Bowl appearances. Vance started drinking after he thought a fumbled punt return was going to result in getting cut from the team. He didn't get fired, but the drinking didn't stop and it wasn't long before drugs became a regular part of his life. Before this incident, Vance didn't have any experience with addiction except for what he had seen in his father. "I hated him for it and I promised myself I wasn't going to be like him." As time passed, Vance's life and addiction got worse. He was over one million dollars in debt, had multiple marriages end in divorce, lost a son to a drunk driving accident, and ended up in a nearly fatal month-long coma. Vance got sober after entering treatment in 2013. Today he travels the country sharing his message of recovery and helps run The Vance Johnson Recovery Center in Las Vegas. A former professional football player with the Denver Broncos, three Super Bowl appearances, a world class athlete, and a recovering alcoholic/addict. Vance's Mission (vanceinspires.com): Reclaiming my faith and redeemed, It is my purpose and passion to Inspire those who like me, found themselves powerless broken and looking for a breakthrough. After growing up around addiction and domestic violence as an adolescent, I struggled with substance abuse throughout and after my NFL career. After a near death experience, in an induced coma in 2009 for 28 days in ICU, I am now Drug-free and alcohol-free since Sept, 2013. I've spent the last few years speaking at a variety of venues, including four Super Bowls, Executive Conferences, Keynote, Church, College, Schools, Municipal, and Town Hall meetings. Everyone deserves a second Chance. Inspired by true faith in a risen savior, sobriety I look to inspire others to take back control of their lives. Learn More at : vanceinspires.com

Listen in for insights on the upcoming games from Microsoft, Bethesda , Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft (in that order!). This is a bonus so no outros, no recommendation and listen to last proper episode to hear what's coming next ;) *recorded over some sketchy phone connections* Rate, Like , Subscribe and find us on: Facebook and Twitter @Mrfranchisepod Itunes, Stitcher, Soundcloud + Many More Pod Apps @Mrfranchise Instagram @shoreloser
