MC Lyte is an American rapper, DJ, actress and entrepreneur. She is the first female of hip-hop's emcees to release a solo album. She also opened doors for many to join what is now being celebrated as '50 Years of Hip Hop.” She recently received the “I Am Hip Hop” Lifetime Achievement Award from BET and was honored at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Lyte was at MSU on February 8 to participate in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine's Dr. William G. Anderson Lecture Series, Slavery to Freedom: An American Odyssey. “This year marks the 50th year of hip hop. MC Lyte is one of the baddest women in the game, and she has certainly managed to evolve as a hip hop artist and MC,” says Marita Gilbert, associate dean for diversity and campus inclusion at MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine. “She's a really strong advocate for giving women a voice–not just in music–and for how we can empower girls to walk into their own potential and do things they want and what they're passionate about as their voices grow, stretch, and evolve.” Gilbert leads Lyte through this thoughtful conversation. Conversation Highlights: (0:50) – Marita, tell us about Lyte and why you wanted her to be a part of the lecture series. (2:42) – Lyte, why did you choose to participate in the Slavery to Freedom Lecture Series? (3:50) – Lyte, what messages do you hope to convey during the lecture?  (4:39) – Marita, what are you hoping attendees take from the discussion? (7:07) – How are you reflecting on 50 years of hip-hop? (17:41) – You're now working with a five-year-old? (18:57) – What words of encouragement do you have for young people? (24:16) – Talk about your creative process. (27:07) – You're the voice of the Grammys… Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND, chats with NaRon Tillman is the Director of Urban Yogis, Director of Inner Knowledge, Pastor of One Ministries, host of Walk In Victory Podcast. Listen to the full story today! https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/naron-tillman Highlights from today's episode include: Naron (06:13): then I started on a powerful entrepreneurialship. And by the time I was 24, I became a minister and getting into ministry was different. It was different because then I started to lose myself. I didn't know who I was as a man and I was preaching, but I still never really could find a balance of being a minister and being a husband and being all the other things that came along with it. And I felt like that I had, I felt as if I had to do something. So I was always attempting to find people to heal or to save the world. Right. Naron (08:27): I'm 44, 20 years of ministry. My views have changed from then to now drastically. And it was all part of the healing process. And it's funny because what I've learned is that healing is a lifetime journey, right? So the process of healing is we're always, we always find ourselves needing to go through those processes again, on some level, whether it's gone back to devotion, personal devotion or prayer, whether it's which I got into some years ago, which is going to transition, yoga and meditation and then coupling those things. So I got into yoga and I got into meditation. Growing up, I was taught that we shouldn't meditate. I was taught that we, that we shouldn't do these things, but I had a back problem. And I walked into this thing and I was running and like ran too long. Dr Manon (14:38): I think you pointed out really well, how we, we live in a society that tends to separate the spirit from the body, from our thoughts and emotions. And when you start to integrate all of this, you start to realize that that also your pains and your beliefs that you're old, or you can't move, are actually just beliefs, you can really start to feel it and that as you heal your physical body, some of the emotions that you have stored release, and that also deals with like your spirituality, we're all one connected. We just live in this delusion.......   About NaRon Tillman: NaRon Tillman is the Director of Urban Yogis, Director of Inner Knowledge, Pastor of One Ministries, host of Walk In Victory Podcast. A  2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors recipient and the First Lady of the BayArea’s multi-platinum royal family entertainment group, The Click. Along with her two brothers, E40 and D Shot, and cousin B Legit, The Click elevated Suga-T to become the biggest selling West Coast woman in hip hop, culminating with the multi-platinum hit “Sprinkle Me” with E40. “Sprinkle Me” was the first platinum hip hop hit by a brother sister duo. As a teen mom, Suga-T had responsibilities far beyond her own career ambitions and made it a point to take breaks away from hip hop, forced to create a variety of successful businesses both for survival and as a way of balancing out her fears of depending on music only. She knew before many artists that a star has to be a brand first, creating as many opportunities to make a living for yourself as possible to support the ones you love. In the midst of it all, she became a Young Grandmother, a matriarch of her own next generation responsible for two generations flourishing under her name.  While re-inventing her brand to become a better role model, she experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. This experience gave Suga-T a lot of insight from a lot of perspectives which provided her the passion to increase her personal, professional and spiritual development. She shares all the nuggets and jewels that she experienced, and created The Winners Dictionary to better prepare others for their life journey or for the intervention in the middle of it.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Rap Legend Too Short. Todd Anthony Shaw, better known by the stage name Too Short, is an American rapper, producer, and actor. He is best known for his hit songs like "The Ghetto" and "Blow the Whistle”. Too $hort was featured on Lady Gaga's song “Jewels N' Drugs” along with T.I. and Twista in 2013. $hort would go on to perform the single live in London alongside Gaga and T.I. at the iTunes Music Festival that year, broadcasting to over 100 countries worldwide. When not performing, Too $hort and Lady Gaga were followed by hundreds of paparazzi all around London and even surprised fans at a local nightclub when they took over the DJ booth with an impromptu performance. In 2008, Too $hort was honored at the fifth annual VH1 Hip-Hop Honors along with Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick and Naughty by Nature, rightfully cementing his place in Hip-Hop history. Just days before the iconic awards show, southern rap star Bun B praised Too $hort's accoplishments in the industry: “For a person like Too Short, who has been around since I started listening to rap, to finally get his just due…there's so many others in this industry that don't get our proper respect and our proper appreciation. I don't think there's one emcee who's rapping today who hasn't been able to express his freedom, and express himself and his opinions, that doesn't get that directly from a person like Too Short,” Bun said. In 2004, Too $hort struck gold when his 1990 hit single “The Ghetto” was featured on the record-breaking video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, garnering major success as both an artist and businessman in the entertainment world.

Three years ago this week, a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Like many people across the country, we were stunned, and saddened at the loss of life and lack of justice. We asked Lucie Brooks to join us in the studio that week, and help us analyze the cases presented by both the prosecution and defense, and what may have lead to the not-guilty verdict. Lucie taught us about jury demographics and how they affect trial outcomes (Zimmerman's just was made up of five white women and one Puerto Rican woman). And we also talked about something more personal: Lucie's experiences as the white mom of four black sons. Just over a year later, a police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri. Protests sprung up in the neighborhood, and the police responded with curfews and riot squads. International media descended on the St. Louis suburb. We thought surely things would change. Police departments would implement extra training about de-escalation, internal biases, and use of force. All the attention on Ferguson would bring change. The Black Lives Matter movement, formed in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict, was galvanized. At that time, we spoke to now-Representative-elect Attica Scott, about the interplay between police departments, local governments, and their communities. Like Lucie, she spoke about raising black sons. Now, three years later, Philando Castille and Alton Sterling were both shot by police, in different cities, just days apart. They became the latest in what seems like an unending cycle of shootings, administrative leave, hashtags, protests, and acquittals. We're listening back to parts of our conversations with Attica and Lucie this week, since they are, sadly, still just as relevant here in the summer of 2016. In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about a Yale employee who pulled a Bree Newsom in the Calhoun College dining hall, where he worked. Corey Menafee smashed a stained glass window that depicted enslaved people picking cotton. He was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for reckless endangerment in the second degree and a felony for criminal mischief in the first degree. Yale has asked the state's attorney in Connecticut to drop the charges, and Menafee has since resigned. And on a brighter note, the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors returned this week after a six-year hiatus, with a special show honoring the genre's female pioneers. We talk about the performances we loved, and women's importance in hip-hip history.
