After receiving a late diagnosis of Asperger's and experiencing life-shattering trauma at age 20, Daniel spent seven years struggling to keep the effects of these events from spilling into every aspect of his life. Daniel initially developed Beyond Intention as a lifeline while he grappled with suicidal thoughts and ideation. This simple, four-step process transformed his life from misery to celebration. Daniel realized he could help others do the same, and thus Beyond Intention was born. Dr Daniel Mills is a Post-Doc at Stanford University. His research primarily concerns the co-evolution of the Proterozoic biosphere (Earth's ‘middle age,' 2.5-0.541 billion years ago) and eukaryotic life — a topic he approaches by studying modern organisms and environments. As we chat, we give credence to the discoveries of Vladimir Vernadsky, a Russian mineralogist who, in the early 20th century published a book called The Biosphere. Vernadsky realised that the geology, chemistry and biology on earth are intricately intertwined. They influence each other. His ideas were a precursor to the Gaia hypothesis, that the earth is a living breathing entity. Her systems work to bring balance via geological and biological processes.Visit Dan at:https://www.danielbradymills.com/context See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode of SMACtalk hosts Brian Fanzo and Daniel Newman talk everything Amazon from retail competition to technology advantage to debating if Amazon is too big to fail. This past week Amazon made two more big moves in retail by signing agreements with Nike and Sears to be able to sell their products online. For Amazon, the illusiveness of certain name brands has been one of their few achilles heels. People have long known that buying name brands from Amazon and their partners was often risky as everything from clothes to diapers were all potentially “knock-offs” given Amazon didn’t have direct brand relationships. This week the first domino fell as Nike reached an agreement to allow the sale of Nike products on Amazon. This will likely lead to more brands succumbing to the pressure and setting up similar sales agreements with Amazon. Given the way people shop and buy on Amazon, this wasn’t an if, but a when, and it appears the when is now. At the center of SMAC talk, is the A, and the A is for Analytics and all the other topics like Big Data and Insights that encompass the world of analytics. Nowadays, data is core to getting closer to the consumer and brands have figured that out. With the best data, companies are able to offer the right products and services at the right time, and this is a powerful tool for growth. However, when you are leveraging, and especially when you are collecting and storing customer data, you also have a responsibility to protect that information. This shift has turned companies from mom and pop restaurants to hotels to service companies of all kinds into modern tech companies with a fountain of valuable data that helps them market and could potentially be valuable to cyber attackers, meaning these small companies now are in the business of security. In this week's episode of SMACtalk, cohosts Brian Fanzo and Daniel Newman explore the importance of companies recognizing their responsibility when they collect and leverage data to improve their sales, marketing and overall digital transformation offerings. In this episode some of the topics covered: * Why all companies need to pay attention to what data they collect and how they secure that data. * The impact of a data breach on customer sentiment and satisfaction. * What industries are collecting the most data and which are at the greatest risk? * Who should companies look to in order to protect sensitive customer data. * Why it's important to have a technology and PR plan in the event a breach takes place. We kicked off 2017 just like we finished 2016 with a lively and passion debate with lots of SMACtalk this time around new years resolutions, making business goals and this culture of no accountability. This topic was fueled by Daniel's facebook post over the holidays which you can read below and the debate went on to include the importance of business goals, the role of public accountability and the current state of social media and marketing as it pertains to small business owners filtering the noise to work with true experts vs those who just make loud noises. Here is the Facebook post from Daniel. "I know this may make me sound like a crotchety old man... But seriously, wtf is the deal with "It's a new year and I'm going to do all this great shit because it's a new year." I have a feeling the people that are going to accomplish great things don't wait for some impending calendar date to get started on their route to greatness. Just start...Go...Do...Be... Celebrate the heck out of your wins, but don't wait. Start now...and if the date is June 9, start then, and if the date is November 4, start then... It's entirely in our control. We decide our outcomes and results. If the New Year is your only motivation to start then I'm pretty comfortable that the resolution will be a fleeting moment in a hot steamy pile of failed resolutions from New Years Past... PS: I'll post a Happy New Year pic later. :P If you want to watch the Facebook Live recording of this episode you can do so here: https://www.facebook.com/SMACtalkLive/videos/1835608916719192/?pnref=story S.M.A.C. stands for Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud and over the two years Dan and Brian have covered topics that included Big Data, Digital Transformation, Social Selling, Data Center Migration, Millennial Marketing, Digital Marketing, live streaming video, customer experience and everything else impacting today's technology world.
