This episode continues my special edition series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward. In this discussion episode, part 5, we're reflecting on the death of Judas after he returns the betrayal money. This event follows Peter's Denial of Jesus while Jesus is being interrogated by the religious leaders after Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested, and hours after Jesus' agonizing moment of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. In this conversation, we jump into the passage about Judas returning the money to the religious leaders, the ending of his life, and his legacy. We'll read and discuss my harmonization of the story from the different accounts of Jesus' life with quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible. Then, we'll explore the story through the following questions: What we can learn about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time? How does this event apply to our lives today? For those just now following along, Judas' death takes place after Judas betrayed Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with a kiss and after he was paid 30 pieces of silver for his actions. Some of the highlights from our discussion include: How often we use Jesus as a pawn in our pursuit of power and control and the messiness of grace. The complexity of Judas and how often we emphasize the simplicity to villainize Judas and separate ourselves from the possibility of relating to or ending up like him. JFK's Ghost: Kennedy, Sorensen and the Making of Profiles in Courage by David R. Stokes "I'd rather win a Pulitzer Prize than be President of the United States," John F. Kennedy confided to author Margaret Coit shortly after his election to the Senate in 1953. Kennedy got his wish four years later, when his book Profiles in Courage was awarded the Pulitzer for biography--even though it wasn't among the finalists for the prize. The role of Kennedy's speechwriter Ted Sorensen in drafting and crafting the main chapters in the book was never acknowledged by Kennedy's inner circle. And Kennedy was hyper-sensitive until his dying day about rumors that cast doubt on his authorship of Profiles. Sorensen was in many ways Kennedy's "alter ego," a man described as Kennedy's "intellectual blood-bank." But Jackie Kennedy found the relationship between her husband and his speechwriter to be "creepy." Still, Jack Kennedy the writer is an often overlooked part of the Kennedy narrative that helped propel his political career. And when Kennedy's authorship of Profiles and the legitimacy of his Pulitzer Prize were challenged on Mike Wallace's national television show by the popular columnist Drew Pearson, JFK's political future was imperiled. If the rumors surrounding the authorship of Profiles in Courage had been confirmed as true prior to his ascendance to the Presidency, there might have been no brief and shining moment in America now remembered as Camelot. Our guest today is David Topus, who helps his clients turn reputation into revenue. I think that’s a pretty great positioning, encapsulating what David does in four words. And that’s what you’d expect from a professional who has been running a strategic sales messaging firm for over twenty-eight years. Now, I never went so far as to actually ask for contact info – I was just taking some baby steps.  But I did end up having over a dozen fascinating discussions.  I met a woman who works as a ski instructor during the winter and during the spring and summer produces car commercials. Met the owner of a gas refinery, at attorney at Bank of America who works on credit derivatives, a woman in college who is studying to become a dentist and who plans to join the family’s 110-year old dental practice – she was helping with bite wings when she was eight years old. I met a professional rock climber, a woman who runs a business that checks on Park City condos while the owners are out of town, and the sales manager for the Western U.S. for one of the two leading printing companies.
