What happens when we listen and are listened to more fully, forging a deeper connection? Decades of research tell us that the brain undergoes physiological changes when we begin to “talk without criticizing, listen without judgment, and connect beyond difference.” This is the definition of dialogue coined by today's guests, Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt and Dr. Harville Hendrix. Doctors Hunt and Hendrix are internationally recognized couples therapists, educators, speakers, and a married couple themselves. Through decades of research, they developed the Imago Relationship Therapy method, which is taught to therapists around the globe. In this episode, they speak with Dr. Alexandra about moving from monologue (turning the conversation to focus on oneself) to dialogue (keeping the conversation focused on the speaker), and how listening and ensuring true understanding of a speaker's meaning has enormous benefits to our relationships and our brains.Relevant Links:Harville and Helen's new book, How To Talk to Anyone About Anything - https://harvilleandhelen.com/books/how-to-talk-with-anyone-about-anything/Learn more about Imago Relationship Therapy - https://harvilleandhelen.com/initiatives/what-is-imago/Explore Safe Conversations, A Methodology for Connecting - https://safeconversations.com/Order Dr. Alexandra's latest book, Love Every DaySubscribe to Dr. Alexandra's NewsletterSubmit a Listener Question Join Dr. Alexandra's five-day retreat with the Modern Elder Academy — Get 10% off with code 'GF10'Try Kion Aminos risk-free for 60-days with a money-back guarantee. Dr. Gutman is a board-certified pediatrician, and just finished a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cohen Children's Medical Center. She will be an adolescent medicine attending at Columbia University Medical Center in August. Her clinical interests include eating disorders, pediatric gynecology and promoting healthy habits in teenagers. Her research focuses on the change in the quality and outcome of eating disorders on patients that presented during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Dr. Gutman served for 2 years as the co-chair of JOWMA's Teen Health Committee, and continues to stay active on the committee.  Dr. Gutman originally earned her Bachelors of Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in English literature. She completed post baccalaureate premedical program and went to medical school at Tel Aviv University. She then went to Jacobi Medical Center for a residency in pediatrics, where her research focused on sickle cell disease—back in those days, she believed she would specialize in pediatric hematology/oncology. In the middle of residency, Dr. Gutman realized that adolescent medicine was more enjoyable and rewarding than anything she'd experienced in residency so far. She quickly knew it was the field for her. _________________________________________________ This week's episode is sponsored by Toveedo! The trouble began when Sarah put a fern in front of her new condo. Nice, right? The woman who lives in the unit above didn't think so, and without warning sent Sarah a slew of passive-aggressive notes. Sarah thinks it's all a big misunderstanding, but now her neighbor refuses to even speak to her. Sarah is wracked with anxiety, struggling to sleep, and contemplating moving out. On this episode of How To!, we turn to stand-up comedian Tig Notaro, a cancer survivor and host of the new advice podcast Don't Ask Tig, to help Sarah approach the situation with humor and clarity. When things don't go your way, Tig says, you have to take back control of your own story. What would the hero in your favorite movie do? For Sarah, this means gardening with headphones and the Rocky theme on the soundtrack.  Do you have a problem that could use some humorous advice? How do you feel about the word ‘bragging'? Does it make you squirm and immediately want to bolt away from the spotlight – or excited about an opportunity to share your success? When a colleague, friend or co-worker starts to say things that sound like bragging - does it rub you up the wrong way? Or do you start feeling inspired and curious about how you could get similar results? My guest today thinks we all need to become better braggers. Which as someone who started life as a good British girl, raised to avoid phrases like ‘Too big for your boots' and the cardinal sin of life becoming ‘Full of yourself'. Had me beginning this conversation already in a full body sweat.Today's Guest Lisa Bragg is an author, speaker and advisor helping people self-promote in a more authentic and un-obnoxious way. She is the founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm and author of: ‘Bragging Rights; How To Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion'. A book that digs into the art of bragging and reveals that people really DO want to hear about our success. That actually, when we share our wins and achievements, not only does it raise the bar on what's possible for the people around us – it creates a field that immediately starts to attract even greater levels of success and opportunity. That's if we know how to do it right.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisabraggInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatlisabraggFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/ThatLisaBragg/ You'll LearnWhy (unlike the high school sports team) we need to learn to pick ourselves - rather than sitting on the sidelines waiting to be picked. In this episode, Catherine continues her riveting conversation Blake Howard, the committed church kid raised in a Christian home who struggled with same sex attraction from a very young age. Then, tragically, Blake was molested and bullied in school for acting gay. So after high school, he became gay. He was also addicted to drugs and was doing drag to receive the love and affirmation that his heart longed for. Blake shares this part of his testimony in Episode 59.   Now you will hear the rest of the story… as Paul Harvey used to say. You will hear about Blake's dramatic alter-call conversion to belief in Christ, his deliverance from drug addiction through the power of the Holy Spirit, and his continued struggle with homosexuality and eventual complete submission to Christ in that area of his life. You'll also hear about his marriage and parenting and how he came to be a minister.   It is an incredible story!   And along the way, you will get some priceless, hard-earned advice on how to walk in relationship with the people in your life who struggle with same sex attraction and gender dysphoria… all from a guy who knows exactly what they need because he's been there.   Blake Howard is the Associate Pastor & Creative Director at Xtreme Harvest Church in San Antonio, TX. Blake graduated from Ramp School of Ministry in Hamilton, AL.   To see clips from this interview and find inspiring supplemental quotes and posts, connect with Catherine on Instagram and Facebook . We've all heard the story of a kid in the church youth group who is now on a destructive path. Many parents are living this story. Sometimes the lessons we teach our kids don't stick. The faith we hand down doesn't become their own. They have outside influences that erode the foundation that us parents seek so diligently to build.   In this episode, Catherine shares a cautionary tale of a young man who was raised in the church, in the Bible belt, and yet he chose a very destructive path. Blake Howard found love and affirmation under layers of make-up and pounds fake body parts. There are a lot of lessons that parents can learn from his story. Catherine and Blake discuss:   Why we need to talk to our kids about sex early, and how to go about that. The effects of bullying on kids who are struggling in the area of sexuality. How the church often reinforces unhealthy ideas about gender. How to help our kids understand masculinity and femininity. The effects of worldly affirmation.   Along the way, you will see how a church kid can slowly descend into a life of sexual confusion and gender dysphoria, all from a guy who has been there and has a lot of wisdom to offer.   And while today's tale is tragic, in the very next episode you will hear how this same young man went from being a drag queen to being a minister of the Gospel.    Only God could write a story like that!   Blake Howard is the Associate Pastor & Creative Director at Xtreme Harvest Church in San Antonio, TX. Host of Hidden Brain podcast, Shankar Vedantam talks with us about the powers: both useful and harmful, of our delusional thinking. Nations are an example of useful delusions; they are an entirely human-made construct, yet they can present us with a unifying, shared identity.  There is a tipping point, however, at which our beliefs can become harmful to someone else. Shankar defines conspiracy theories as a particular type of self deception which can easily escalate into harmful behavior. Our conversation with Shankar touches on the Capitol Riots in Washington DC on January 6th 2021, and how conspiracy theories influenced the behavior of the rioters. “Conspiracy theories, I think are a sort of special case of self deception, which...can easily take over into things that are deeply harmful.” The challenge most of us face though, is how to talk to our friends and family who believe in conspiracy theories. And on that point, Shankar explains the Illusion Of Explanatory Depth and how conversations with our loved ones need to start with an air of empathy and compassion. Like Zig Ziglar would always say, "You can get anything you want in life as long as you help enough other people get what they want." When you serve first, things will come back to you. Your podcast allows you a tremendous opportunity to serve others. You can serve people with your content. Guest can come on your show and be served by you as you get them exposure. Events and organizations can be served by your promotion. On the show today, I want to give you a variety of ways you can benefit when you serve. We'll also talk to Dan Miller, author of "48 Days To The Work And Life You Love". He has a great resource for you called "How To Talk, Serve And Put Money In The Bank". SERVE There are three people who really taught me how to serve through my business. The first influence in my business was Zig Ziglar. The more I listened to Zig encourage us to serve, the more I tried it. As I was getting better at serving, my business continued to grow. It is amazing what serving can do for your spirit. The second influence was Dave Ramsey from Ramsey Solutions, The Ramsey Show and Financial Peace University. Dave always encourages his listeners to find someone to help you with your money who has the heart of a teacher. That really hit home for me. Teachers have a special heart and desire to serve. They have such an impact on people by how they serve. As I went into my business, I wanted to come from that same place and serve well. COLLABORATE When it came to creating partnerships in my business, I wanted my approach to be the same. I want my business to have the heart of a teacher and serve. I really learned how to have a partnership discussion based on service at Collaborate. This is an amazing event where you can connect and collaborate with hundreds of coaches, authors, podcasters, speakers, program leaders and many others. There are a variety of experts who can become your partners to help you grow your business, impact and income. There is another Collaborate coming up soon. You can get all the details through my affiliate link at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/collaborate. Collaborate is an event put on by the team at JVIC – Joint Venture Insiders Circle. Rich German and Iman Aghay have that heart of a teacher. They want to serve. More importantly and impactful, they teach their audience how to serve. SERVE BY NETWORKING During the Collaborate event, participants are put into networking circles of six or eight people. Each person has about 2 minutes to tell who they, who they serve and what sort of help they seek from their promotional partners. Now, most events would stop there. Throw people in a room and let them get at it. Instead, Iman teaches every person exactly how to use their two minutes. He gives you a template to tell people exactly how you serve so they will want to partner with you. But, it doesn't stop there. He also teaches participants how to have the follow up conversation after the event and serve even more. We so often go to events and meet a ton of people. After the event ends, we neglect to follow up and take action on the connections. No collaboration happens. Iman teaches participants to use their 2 minutes in the breakout rooms to simply get people to want to have a follow up call with you. On the follow up call, Iman says use the first 20 minutes of the call to see what the other person is all about and where they need support. Spend the next 20 minutes talking about you and where you need support. Finally, spend the last 20 minutes to find ways you can serve each other. This is such a powerful way to create amazing partnerships. You can get the full details on the next Collaborate event at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/collaborate. I would love to see you there. DAN MILLER When you serve, you offer so much value to everyone you touch. Powerful relationships are formed when you serve. Today, we talk with Dan Miller. He is President of 48 Days LLC, specializes in creative thinking for increased personal and business success. He believes that meaningful work blends our natural skills and abilities, our unique personality traits and our dreams and passions. He believes that a clear sense of direction can help us become all that God designed us to be. Dan is the author of the New York Times best-selling "48 Days To The Work (And Life) You Love". In this episode, Dan and I discuss the power that comes when you serve. You can find Dan's resource "How To Talk, Serve And Put Money In The Bank" at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/serve.   If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. As the journalist and highly popular former weekly columnist on psychology for The Guardian Oliver Burkeman points out, the average human life is a mere four thousand weeks long. The unavoidable reality is that there will never be enough time to do it all. So how do we do what needs to be done, let go of what doesn't, and learn to find joy in the limited time we have? The accelerating pace of life leaves us impatient with experiences we might otherwise enjoy, such as time spent with a toddler, or pursuing a once-loved hobby. And we grow so obsessed with planning for an idealized future that we miss the pleasures of the only moment it ever is: this one. Burkeman's life-changing book is a thought-provoking blend of philosophical musings and practical advice on learning to shed our self-imposed expectations—to come to accept our overflowing email inboxes, ditch our unrealistic bucket lists, and use our precious weeks to build lives of purpose and accomplishment instead. His work has appeared in The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, Psychologies, and New Philosopher.

Misha Glouberman is a communications expert, educator, author, and public speaker with a knack for helping people to get the most out of their conversations. He discovered his talent at a young age, as early as grade school, where he would intuitively identify misunderstandings between teacher and student. Though he couldn't have known it at the time, Misha would later take his gift and turn it into a profession, and become an educator himself. Today, Misha uses his expertise to help corporate clients improve their culture by facilitating healthy communication from top to bottom. He also teaches a course, available to the public, which is aptly titled, "How To Talk to People About Things".In his work, Misha emphasizes the importance of remaining conscious on both sides of a conversation - speaking and listening; as well as removing oneself from their own "story", and opening their minds to the story on the other side. Even in the midst of conflict or argument, Misha says it is essential to practice compassionate, conscious conversation - striving to understand even in the face of disagreement, and working with the other party on proceeding forward by first finding common ground. In today's digital age, Misha says many fundamentals of healthy conversation still apply, and that the advent of digital communication is in fact a boon to the overall landscape of human communication. In this episode of Stories of Transformation, we take a deep dive into the essence of conversation - how it works; as well as common issues and how to overcome them. Misha provides some practical tips on how to cultivate better conversations - methods to increase efficiency, to maximize productivity, and to strengthen relationships through earnest listening and authenticity. Misha's insights are at once incredibly profound and surprisingly simple, and best of all, many of them are directly applicable to conversations in everyday life - no matter the medium.----For full show noteshttps://www.baktashahadi.com/podcastConnect with Misha GloubermanWebsite: http://www.mishaglouberman.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/mishaglouberman?s=20Facebook: How to Talk to People About ThingsResourcesPurchase Misha Glouberman's book, "The Chairs Are Where the People Go: How To Live, Work, and Play in the City"https://amzn.to/2PUnn1ZLearn more about Misha's course: "How To Talk to People About Things"http://www.mishaglouberman.com/negotiationFollow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash AhadiDonate to the production of this podcasthttps://www.baktashahadi.com/supportFollow us on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/stories_of_transformation/Follow us on FacebookStories of TransformationCreditsHosted by: Baktash Ahadihttps://www.baktashahadi.comProduced by: Joseph Gangemihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-gangemi-audio/Digital Marketing & Media by: Katherine Anhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-a-91081b56/Theme music by: Qais Essarwww.therabab.comArtwork by: Masheed Ahadihttps://www.LinkedIn.com/in/masheedEpisode Music Credits"Burst" by Borrtex"Be Still" by Doug Kaufman"New World" by Ian Post

If you're lucky, you were raised in a family that expressed emotions and create space for you to be just as you are, which made it easy for you to "come out."  If that was you, damn, I am happy for you! However, for many others, that was not their experience. For some who haven't come out yet, they continue to operate in a space where they fear the worse.   Today's guest is Rick. Rick's coming out experience was pretty pleasant and "easy." He is going to share with you what it was like for him to tell his family that he is gay and how that lead him on a path to writing his book, "Rainbow Relatives - Real World Stories and Advice on How To Talk to Kids about LGBTQ+ Families and Friends."   Talking to children about this topic is essential. I think that parents need to educate themselves more on the LGBTQ community. Your kids, whether you like it or not, are going to interact with LGBTQ people throughout their lives. Many of your children are going to most likely, at some point, come out at LGBTQ in their lifetime. Why not get in front of it sooner? If you could normalize and make this life at all easier for your children, would you not do that?   It's time to start having conversations with children about sexuality and gender far sooner than we are. There is so much evidence that kids are aware of their sexuality much sooner than we begin educating them on the subject. We all know that by the time we are talking about it with them, it's too late. The damage is often already done. And this is why I think books like Rick's are so important.  The author is also the writer and producer of the film Walk A Mile In My Pradas, starring Tom Arnold, Dee Wallace, and Bruce Vilanch and it is on Amazon Prime at http://tinyurl.com/gnwsehl Connect with Rick online www.rickkaratas.com    Follow LGBT Stories on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/ourlgbtstories Follow Kevin Gerdes on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/kevingerdes   Donate and Shop www.ourlgbtstories.com

As we discussed on the last episode, Money and Communication problems are the two pitfalls that tear most marriages apart. If you aren't communicating with one another, you invite others into intimate areas of your life that should be reserved for your spouse alone. These confidants often turn into lovers which deepens the chasm between you and your spouse even more. If you practice healthy communication with your spouse on the day to day, you will most likely find yourself in a very fulfilling relationship. 1 Peter 3:8-11 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. For, "The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it."
