When financial literacy expert Walli Miller low-key dropped that she was a self-made millionaire, I immediately knew I had to get her on the pod. I loved talking to Walli because she's incredibly ETHICAL in the way she talks about financial literacy; no "shame-y" language, no "get rich quick" BS. Walli approaches money from BOTH the mindset work AND the practical math. After this conversation I felt genuinely excited to look at my finances, to ask myself some questions about how I felt about money (the exercise of "who would money be if they were a person" really got me, y'all!), and to make some adjustments to my saving/spending/investing to help me increase my financial resources! She loves spreadsheets and has been known to watch PBS specials about retirement for fun! It's exactly this passion for all things money, including spending it, that put her on the path to her true calling - helping high-achieving, young professionals become work-optional by taking control of their finances without sacrificing their lattes and brunches. Walli didn't start out as an expert, she is a first generation college graduate and daughter of an immigrant. She didn't always understand money or building wealth. She didn't grow up looking at stock charts with her dad or balancing the checkbook with her mom. They didn't talk about money much in her family. After that, Walli began listening to podcasts, reading personal finance books and ingesting every bit of financial information she could find. So, let's explore some of the different cultural attitudes towards money and see what we can learn from them! What does wealth mean to you? Is it a fridge fully stocked from Whole Foods, a lucrative savings account, and luxury getaways? Or maybe spending time with those you love? Everybody experiences wealth in various ways, but rarely do we take the time to reflect on if we actually feel wealthy at the subconscious level. Because the reality is very few of us were taught about money mindset, or how to empower ourselves with it! I'm sure many of us grew up seldom hearing about the importance of financial literacy. Sure, you were taught about checkbooks and savings and even spending habits. But were you ever instilled with tools to bridge the gap between your behaviors and desires? Chances are, you weren't. But that doesn't mean you're destined to live the rest of your life stuck in your old ways— or a shallow spending budget. Like you, Walli Miller grew up believing she was adequate at money management. But after receiving an income report in her mid-twenties, she realized she had nothing to show for all her hard work. And more importantly, realized how little she was really taught about money. After a slew of ‘aha' moments and losing love for her corporate job, she finally decided it was time to create wealth according to her standards. Not only did she utilize mindset work and self-reflection to redefine what wealth meant to her, but discovered how she can show up everyday honoring her values. How? By building her relationship with money as a tool, and not just a currency. Walli's wealth of knowledge is here to teach us there's ‘no one size fits all' when it comes to money mindset and wealth. Which is what makes her a truly unique and inspiring coach… and this week's IHML Show guest! In this episode, Walli and I harp on the hard conversations about money, being intentional with our spending habits, how to define wealth in our own way, and tips to align our money with our values! This IHML Show episode is worth a fortune with how much information and insight Walli has to offer. As someone who's been working on her own money mindset, I truly believe Walli is going to completely change the way you think about wealth. Because no matter what you were told to believe, the luxuries of life that light you up are truly priceless— no matter the cost! In This Episode: [0:27] This is how Walli's financial journey all transpired… [2:55] Wall walks us through her adult relationship with money that inspired her work! [8:45] These are the first steps Walli took in light of her major money ‘aha' moment. [11:19] Walli shares her (unexpected) philosophies and desires as a financial coach. [14:55] How to get clear on your vision and stay aligned with it— according to Walli! [17:32] Want to create a ‘work optional' experience, or build generational wealth? Give some of Walli's tips a much needed try! [23:41] These are the overlooked avenues and mistakes Walli sees in entrepreneurs and her own clients. [27:16] Walli happily shares her wisdom for how to create a life better than your dreams, from a wealth standpoint! Quotes: “What we don't realize is that so much of our money relationship, our money mindset is really formed and shaped when we're really young, when we're about between the ages of seven and 10. So when we think about what type of environment and what type of examples did our parents have for us, when it came to money and what type of conversations did they have with us surrounding money. And then to think that as we get older and start working and get those jobs and begin making an income, that a lot of the things that we learned may not be the best in having the healthiest relationship with money.” — Walli Miller “And I remember getting an income report of the last 10 years of my wages and I calculated how much money I had made in my lifetime and realized that I had nothing to show for it.” — Walli Miller “I had to really understand what my spending triggers were. And sometimes those spending triggers could be associated with negative feelings, right?” — Walli Miller “If we feel anxious, upset, depressed, sad, angry, frustrated, we might want to make ourselves feel better by using something like shopping. But sometimes it's also a positive thing that we do, right? If we get a promotion at work, or we finally completed a big project. Now, all of a sudden we are shopping as a form of reward. And neither one of those things are bad. But if you are doing these things sort of unintentionally, if you're doing these things sort of unconsciously, that's where that becomes an issue.“ — Walli Miller “When we talk about money mindset, it's simply your relationship with money. Your habits, your behaviors, your thoughts around money. And when we understand what that is and what are some of the behaviors that you would like to replace, or some of the habits that you would like to remove, then we can sort of figure out what you want to do with your money.” — Walli Miller “One of the things that I tell my clients is that as a financial coach, this might sound a little weird but, I do not care how you spend your money. What I do care about is that I wanna hear what it is that you want your life to look like. Let's design the life that you want. Let's design the experiences that you want.” — Walli Miller “So if we can really tie in the things that are [a part of] the life that you want to have, the experiences you want to experience, then we can tie that into how we can use money as a tool to help you get there. “ — Walli Miller “Once I really understood where my money was going and I realized that it wasn't aligned, where I was spending my money wasn't aligned with what I valued most. That was something that helped me make that shift.” — Walli Miller “I like to use this acronym for cutting the F.A.T.T. and F.A.T.T. stands for food, accommodation, transportation, and taxes. If you can cut the F.A.T.T. down in your budget, that is where the bulk of your success is going to be.” — Walli Miller “If we had to create a list of the top five things that you valued most, where does being financially independent or building generational wealth fall in line with your shopping trips to whole foods or your luxury vehicle. And only you can decide that.” — Walli Miller “When you can define what wealth means to you and what a rich life means to you, then you can begin dreaming.” — Walli Miller Links & Resources Follow the I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i-heart-my-life-show/id1569047758 Subscribe to the I Heart My Life Show on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zw6fI37FrfVjZMXlMiZZ6 Connect with Emily: Emily Williams Website https://emilywilliams.com/ Emily on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/emilywilliams/ I Heart My Life Website https://www.iheartmylife.com/ I Heart My Life on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/iheartmylife/ I Heart My Life on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/iheartmylifenow I Heart My Life on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/i-heart-my-life/ Join the IHML community to receive exclusive announcements and tips. https://www.iheartmylife.com/newsletter Email: info@iheartmylife.com Connect with Walli Miller: Follow Walli on Instagram! I'm a big believer in having multiple streams of income and having some education on financial well-being. We don't all need to be experts, but we need to have some foundation knowledge of spending, saving, and making the most of our wealth-building for our futures so we can have choices. Now she has a millionaire dollar portfolio and is on the way to being work-optional by the age of 40! In This Episode We Discuss: How the financial situation she grew up in caused a money mindset that led to her spending everything she made after paying the bills in her 20s The AHA moment she experienced when looking at her social security earnings statement What happened at work that helped her realize she didn't have financial freedom The sacrifices she made in college and housing throughout the years that helped her get to where she is now How lifestyle creep steals your money and ability to build wealth The importance of understanding your financial numbers The balance of reducing expenses and bringing in more income How she and her husband saved 45% of their income while living in NYC Her principle of “Cut the FATT” What Financial Independence really means Why you need to do the math instead of just aiming for $1 million How she overcomes the “wealth guilt” she experiences from outearning her family members You can learn more about Walli and her work as a financial coach on her website: financiallythriving.com or on Instagram at financially_thriving. The Money Fit Show Episode #2 Wealth, Lifestyle Priorities, and Generational Legacies Guest Name: Walli Miller About the Guest: Founder of Financially Thriving, a three-month, 1:1 coaching program for young professionals. Her “goal is to help women become the first millionaires in their families.” Walli Miller shares the story of her personal financial journey, from mindless spender with very little to show for all her work to not only the first college graduate in her family but the first millionaire as well. Confidence with money starts with accepting possibilities Walli’s no-spend challenge led her to recognize her mindless shopping behavior Mindless spending not only includes making major purchases but also includes purchasing lots of little things, even at discount stores. Positive changes can result from negative experiences at one’s place of employment. Start by understanding your monthly income (not just your salary) and then get a clear understanding of how you’re spending your money. How to live in an expensive area and still progress financially, without feeling deprived. Be aware of and minimize lifestyle creep by focusing on priorities. Life priorities should trump financial priorities. Developing a money mindset involves our approach to financial behaviors, goals, and habits. The FIRE Movement (Financial Independence-Retiring Earning) taught her about building wealth, not just earning more money. Financial independence and wealth mean more than just having money. It means you are creating a family financial legacy. Walli Miller, financial coach, entrepreneur and today's guest is passionate about all things money - including spending it. This wasn't always the case - growing up Walli picked up traits from her environment that hindered her success with money early on. She became self aware of her relationship with money and bad money habits as she approached 6-figures at her 9 to 5 job. Doubt, shame and self sabotage began to creep in. As Walli started to course correct, she submerged herself with knowledge from books, podcasts and other financial coaches. She started investing more and saving less. She started to foster an actual relationship with her money and take control of her life. Today she makes more money with her investments than at her 9 to 5 job and is on track to exit the rat race any moment from now. Walli Miller is a financial coach from the Bronx who guides women towards financial wellness and freedom, and has made it her mission to help 25 women become the first millionaires in their families. She takes a holistic approach with her clients that includes helping them to understand how their mindset and attitudes affect their money management habits. In this episode, we talk about the difference between living within your means and building wealth, how to build generational wealth and mitigate the allure of materialism in younger generations, the importance of financial independence for women, and how knowledge is power for communities like hers that have had restricted access to political influence and wealth-building opportunities. In this episode we mention: Get Good With Money by Tiffany Aliche (the Budgetnista)
I am a self-proclaimed money nerd! I love spreadsheets. I watched PBS specials about retirement for fun! There's a difference between “good” with money and knowing how to build wealth. The truth is, I was good at staying out of credit card debt. I had so much to learn about managing and growing my money. I am a natural spender. I love a good sale. I was proof that having a high-income didn't mean I knew how to manage my money. I was born and raised in New York City. I spent most of my life living in the the Bronx. I am a Latina, first generation college graduate and daughter of an immigrant. I moved to California for an amazing job opportunity and negotiated my salary to more than double what I was making. Unfortunately, I didn't understand money or building wealth. I didn't grow up looking at stock charts with my dad or balancing the checkbook with my mom. We didn't talk about money much in my family. At 24 years old I was making more than ever before and I had no idea what to do once my bills were paid. Naturally, I began to spend and spend. I set very little money aside every month. I bought shoes, clothes, handbags and rarely did I cook at home.
