Jesse shares his journey of using money intentionally and the benefits of giving every dollar a job and covers four key habits promoted by YNAB: assigning every dollar a job, embracing true expenses, rolling with the punches, and aging one's money. About Today's GuestJesse Mecham is a personal finance expert and founder of YNAB, an app with a simple set of habits to help people change the way they think about money. Nearly two decades later, The TODAY Show described YNAB as a “cult-favorite,” and the YNABverse continues to expand – amassing passionate fan communities on every corner of the internet (that combined are larger than the population of Charleston). Back in 2020, Janine and Shannon had a robust conversation about our passion for the budgeting software You Need a Budget (YNAB). Our enthusiasm has not dimmed in the slightest, so we wanted to run it again. Money is a source of stress for so many people. One tool that both Janine and Shannon use to help them take the stress out of money and create financial peace is the software You Need a Budget (YNAB). Shannon is a YNAB master! In this episode we discuss YNAB and other strategies for creating financial peace. (And Shannon offers to help any listener  who needs help with YNAB!) Discussion topics include: • The key to Shannon's financial peace: YNAB (You Need a Budget) software • Rule 1 with YNAB: Give each dollar a job! • How YNAB can help you manage an irregular income by creating a buffer • Budgeting for next month's expenses • Shannon's addiction to interacting with her money every day in YNAB (it takes less than 15 minutes!) • Budgeting for annual expenses monthly to eliminate big surprise payments • How YNAB can help create peace in relationships when people share money • Reading a book about YNAB vs trying it out first • How Janine is pairing YNAB and Quickbooks to help her stay on top of her bookkeeping • The peace that comes with being on top of your money • Using Undebt.it to help with debt payoff • How YNAB can help with automatic credit card payments • Shannon's offer to help out anyone who's trying out YNAB in our Facebook group • A strategy for creating a buffer so that this month's income pays next month's expenses • Making money feel supportive rather than stressful Note: Since this was recorded two and a half years ago, Janine has achieved the financial peace she sought, thanks to YNAB. She is now debt-free and happily handles four budgets daily. She is grateful for YNAB (and Shannon's YNAB mentorship) literally every day. Get ready for this thought-provoking conversation that Roger & Amber have as they dive into the principles of money management and how we each view it. For example, consider this, what is the clarity that you really want and experience or do that isn't tied to money?  Think of it like “profit for joy”.  This can be accomplished when we reverse engineer our goals.  With this focus, we each can work with more purpose and intent. Money Blocks, have you heard of this before, and do you know what it means?  You should because it may be holding you back from the success you deserve. It stems from the idea that we need to understand money, how to manage it, and leverage it. Do we realize how much our relationship with money relates to our self-worth, Business investment vs. business expense?  This is a perspective you need to have personally and professionally. Is your time contaminated, and what does that mean to you? Regarding your clients, there are 3 questions every business owner needs to know with your help.  Pay attention and see what you can do to help answer them for your clients. In fact, what is the value the client finds in the services we offer, it perhaps is the core of what we are bringing to the relationship with our clients. So, remove the distractions, be present and enjoy this thoughtful conversation. What do you crave? Well, whatever it is, the next time you crave it, there is something simple you can do that can make the craving pass quickly to help you avoid temptation. I begin this episode with this very easy tactic that has been proven to work. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyched/201104/clenching-your-fists-increases-willpower Would you say you are a cynical person? A cynic is someone who doesn't put much faith in the goodness of others. Many cynics say they are just realists - that people can't be trusted because humans are motivated by greed and self-interest. Well, when you look a little deeper, cynicism may not be such a great way to view humanity according to behavior scientist Jamil Zaki, PhD, who is an associate professor of psychology at Stanford University. He has a great TED Talk called Escaping the Cynicism Trap and he is also author of the book The War for Kindness (https://amzn.to/2qtq4dX) . Listen as he reveals why some of us are cynics and what being cynical does to a person.  Jamil was on an earlier episode talking about empathy which I think you will enjoy if you haven't heard it. You can listen to it here: https://www.somethingyoushouldknow.net/338-dirty-jobs-host-mike-rowe-offers-a-different-view-of-success-the-awesome-power-of-empathy/ It hopefully comes as a comfort that almost everyone has regrets about how they have handled their finances. So much so that a large number of us have actually shed tears over money mistakes. What's more important is what are you going to do now with your money? Joining me to discuss that and offer some very specific advice to get your financial house in order is Joe Saul-Sehy, a former financial planner who hosts the popular podcast called Stacking Benjamins https://www.stackingbenjamins.com/ and has a new book out called Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management (https://amzn.to/3KaBYO1). Behind the scenes of my simple and practical new financial freedom plan to help me create the life I want. Today is about taking action and control of your finances so you can create the life you want. The motivation or my why for taking action on my finances. The two books that helped me build the framework and key takeaways from each. My new plan along with the tools I am using to put my financial plan on auto-pilot. Part 1: Why am I taking action on my finances? I turn 50 in November Reduce stress and self-doubt Financial Freedom Peace of Mind Control & Clarity Always Moving Forward Opportunity to Advance Part 2: The 2 Books that led me to action I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi (Buy on Amazon) The Latte Factor by David Bach (Buy on Amazon)   I Will Teach You To Be Rich  By Ramit Sethi 1st Edition: My biggest takeaway from the 1st edition was setting up online banks for automating your finances. Set it and forget it. Deposit your paycheck in a checking account and have set amounts go to bills, savings, and investments automatically. 2st Edition: I ordered the audiobook from Audible immediately and listened to it non-stop for 2 days. This book is a crash course in the fundamentals of investing and also very tactical in that he gives step by step advice along with specific recommendations for investments and online banks. I Will Teach You To Be Rich caused me to take action 10 years ago and it had the same effect on me the 2nd time around because the message throughout the book is taking the time to do this now will help you create the life you want. This book will teach you exactly what to invest in, how to set up online banking so your savings and investing are automatic, and what it means to live a rich life. It’s not about the money, it’s about intentional living and purpose. The Latte Factor by David Bach Podcast Mentioned: The James Altucher Show I also listened to The Latte Factor on Audible from start to finish. The Latte Factor is story about a girl named Zoey who is a twenty-something working and living the dream in NYC and is buried under student loans, debt, and living paycheck to paycheck just trying to make ends meet. Not an unfamiliar story for many. The thought of savings and investing are the furthest thing from her mind as she can barely afford rent. This is a story many of us have experienced and it can be a vicious cycle of financial stress and worry working hard just to pay debts and eek by without being able to put any money aside for travel or savings or retirement. Zoey meets a wise old man who changes her perspective and teaches her many valuable money and life lessons such as the power of compounding interest and one of the the most important lessons of this book and my biggest takeaway from the book is Pay yourself first. **Pay Yourself First: ** You take the first hour of every working day and put that in your savings or investment account. Example: You work 8 hours per day You take your hourly rate for 1 hour out of the 8 hours You put the first hour of payin your savings or investment account. You can multiply this 1 hour by the number of days you work or multiply by 7 for a full week. Bonus Math Tip: To get the hourly rate from any annual salary: Divide the salary by 2 and that is the hourly rate. If you make 50,000 per year. 50,000/2 is 25,000 $25/hour If you make 75,000 per year. 75,000/2 is 37,500 $37.50/hour If you make 100,000 per year. 100,000/2 is 50,000 $50.00/hour Pay Yourself First Example (First Hour) You make $50,000 per year which is $25/hour pre-taxes. Save 1 hour per working day that is $25 x 5 days = $125 $125 week x 4 weeks = $450 per month by paying yourself the 1st hour of every day. Use this as a benchmark. Takeways: Pay yourself first Treat savings like an expense each month and you will be paying your self first. Prioritize. Part 3: The Plan & Tools I figured out my savings goal by using The Latte Factors pay yourself first. I took my salary and divided it by 2 to get my hourly rate and then I multiplied that by 7 and rounded up to get my the total I wanted to save each month. This total will fund my 401k, Roth, and my multiple savings buckets that I want to save for. Here are the specifics of my plan: Vanguard Funds (highly recommend) I moved my existing mutual fund and Roth IRA to Vanguard Funds Tip: Look up expense ratios. They matter. A lot. Ally Bank (highly recommend) I set up a new online banking account at Ally Bank and added multiple savings accounts that included a regular savings fund, Vacation Fund & Emergency Fund and connected my checking account so I could make recurring deposits automatically as soon as my paychecks get deposited. Auto-pilot. Personal Capital is a money manager like Mint. You add every financial account you have including credit cards, Paypal, checking, savings, 401K, Roths etc and it magically organizes and gives you a real-time snapshot of everything. YNAB (You Need a Budget) is a popular budgeting tool that I am trying to adopt in my system. It is $80/year. It has steep learning curve. Pay myself first I connected my checking account to my Roth IRA and set up a recurring deposit of $100 per month as soon as my paycheck is deposited. Here is my plan in action: I get a paycheck Money is automatically deposited in my 401K. The rest of my paycheck goes to my checking account. My checking account sends money to Vanguard that contributes to my Roth IRA. My checking account sends money to Ally Bank with multiple savings accounts and emergency fund, etc. Personal Capital is an iOS and web app that organizes all of my accounts YNAB (You need a budget) makes sure I am prioritize and track my spending. Pay myself first and then I pay my rent and bills and whatever is left is mine to enjoy life with. And if you work multiple side hustles like myself, pump as much as you can into your system and let it grow.

After an Author Life Update, Valerie talks about the steps to take leading up to your book launch.   Show Notes: Hello Indie Authors! This is Episode 15, and it's 6/12//2019 as I record this. Today I'm talking about steps leading up to Book Launch. But first Author Life segment: Finished editing another chapter in my How to Write a Novel or Memoir book. Been looking at tile and cabinet catalogs online for the new house. Got our couch! It's beautiful. I'm struggling with getting all the things done. I'm trying to focus more on work times instead of deadlines for my personal work, but my day job (the client work) really vies for space in my schedule and it always feels like something is lacking. I'm good at Positivity and planning for the future and looking forward to where my hard work right now will take me, but sometimes I feel a little scattered. Perhaps I'm just struggling with process. Parenting Fail: I just heard that my son is giving his senior review presentation today at 4 (while I'm getting a pedicure)(headsmack) In my only defense, today's presentation was rescheduled from a previous time that I was available for. Author self-care: Do it. I'll have another episode solely on this topic next season, but for now, I just want to say that the older I get, the more I realize that self-care isn't just a luxury. It really is mandatory for my health, well-being, and productivity. It's no joke anymore. I'M READING: In fiction, White is for Witching. Don't know if I like it yet. Non-fiction: YNAB (You Need a Budget) Went to an editors luncheon and had a few lovely conversations with old colleagues, and new. Had a conversation about audiobooks. That is definitely on the horizon for me. I'm shooting for 2020. In doing the homework for Sweet Spot Strategy, I stumbled upon a cool cool idea for an author service that I'd love to shout to the rooftops, but I won't. It's too new and underdeveloped. Just like not sharing story ideas too soon. I have a couple of editing jobs I'm trying to finish up before I go on vacation on the 22nd. My husband had a birthday on Monday and we celebrated it over the weekend. "I love having birthday weekends," he says. (Aww!) No NEW PATRONS this week, but I hope you'll consider becoming a patron and helping me reach my FIRST Patreon goal. To earn $125 in monthly income from Patreon. When that happens...extra bonus Q&A episode for Patrons only.  Think of it as an inexpensive mini coaching session with me! If you’re thinking of buying a home or investing in real estate, I have five apps to tell you about that will help you set your budget. Whether you’re looking to buy a home or invest in real estate and build your nest egg, you need to budget your finances. Here are five great apps that will help you develop the a budgeting strategy: 1. Mint.com. This app takes all your financial accounts and expenses and categorizes them to ensure that you don’t overspend. 2. PocketGuard. This is another app that prevents you from overspending.  3. YNAB (You Need a Budget). This app allows you to assign every dollar to a specific job so you can zero-base the account through which your money comes in and goes out every single month.  4. Wally. The great thing about this app is it deals in foreign currency. It also tracks your income expenses and gives you a periodic snapshot of your budget.  5. Mvelopes. If you’re the kind of person who prefers to put cash in envelopes in order to budget for certain tasks, this app lets you do the same thing, only digitally. “These apps will help you develop a budgeting strategy.” Bonus app: Personal Capital. This app is specifically for investors. It’s great for general budgeting, but it also allows you to underwrite deals for particular properties.  In addition to these apps, we have a great pro forma you can use if you want to underwrite rental properties with a “hold” or “flip” strategy. With this pro forma, you’ll get cap rates, rates of returns, ROIs, etc. If you’re interested in getting it, get in touch with me and I’d be happy to send it to you.  Budgeting is one of my favorite topics, so if you have any more questions about these apps or you want to set a budget for a future home purchase, don’t hesitate to call or email me. I look forward to speaking with you.
