Briana Borten is a spiritual leader and teacher focused on how our connection to our souls, each other, the Divine, and the earth is the solution. She's the founder of The Dragontree Spa based in Colorado and Oregon and has written numerous books (with her sweet husband Peter) including the Dreambook and Planner, Rituals for Transformation, and The Well Life. Suzi talks with Adam Popp, U.S. Air Force veteran about where he was and what he had to do to be where he is now to Be Crazy Well. BioAdam is a 12-year combat veteran of the Air Force with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team leader. In 2007, while working to disarm a roadside bomb (IED) in Afghanistan, Adam was injured by a secondary IED resulting in the amputation of his right leg above the knee. In the years following his injury, Adam endeavored to find meaning and purpose. Ultimately, he found that running, sports, and advocacy work was his path to fulfillment and self-actualization. In December 2016, eight years after losing his leg and a year and a half after his first run as an amputee, Adam became the first above-knee amputee to complete a 100-mile ultramarathon within the 30-hour cutoff. He later lowered his 100-mile trail time to 18h52m12s at the 2021 Tunnel Hill 100-miler. He placed 2nd at the 2021 Boston Marathon's inaugural Para Elite division (T61-64), running a world best time for the T63 category of 3h13m25s. In 2017, Adam was the first-ever amputee to complete the JFK 50-miler (also known as America's Oldest Ultramarathon and the World's Oldest Annually Run Footrace) and has five consecutive finishes at this race. Adam is not only first, but sometimes he's also fastest: in 2019 he set the men's course record for the trail marathon at the Colorado Kickers for Kids Endurance Run and came in first overall against able-bodied athletes. In search of more challenges, Adam began competing in Paratriathlon in 2016. In his short Paratriathlon career, Adam has racked up nine podium finishes in fifteen races on the World Triathlon stage, including wins at the 2021 and 2022 Americas Triathlon Championships and the 2018 International Triathlon Union (ITU) Paratriathlon World Cup in Sarasota, Florida. In 2019, Adam finished 5th overall in the ITU Paratriathlon World Championship in Lausanne, Switzerland. These accomplishments would not have been possible without countless mentors and organizations along the way. During the 18 months in which Adam was recovering from his injuries, he was able to meet and learn from others recovering from a wide range of traumatic injuries and individual challenges. He saw the myriad ways that people handled the process of recovery, many using sport to not only overcome their new adversity, but to rise to a higher level of functioning in the aftermath of trauma. Adam learned, above all, just how instrumental mentors are in this process. By the end of his stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, he made a pledge to himself that he would utilize his experience, understanding, and compassion to help others overcome their individual physical and emotional challenges to reach their maximum potential. Once a single mom to three, and now a married woman with seven, crazy, right? I had a well life vision. years ago, I figured I would stay single and raise great humans, I would graduate college, finally, get my kids through school and find a great job. We were going to move to Georgia, where there were more opportunities for professional black women. And my kids will be in community with family that we have in Georgia, new friends, people who look like them. And of course, they will go to historically black colleges and universities. I mean, that was my dream. So Boy, that vision has changed some.So in this episode, we are going to explore creating a well life vision for your family. Well, my vision is just that creating a plan of where your family is headed in the steps to get there. Think of it as the roadmap and here are the steps: Why did we start a family? If you're a single parent? Why did I start a family? What does life look like for myself in my family in the next 10 years? What qualities does your family want to see in the best life possible and the next 10 years? What roadblocks may occur. What is our well life vision statement? So I would love to hear all about your family statements and how the family activity went. So come into the Facebook group and share with me and others. If you want to take a pic of your family do it activity and tag me on Instagram at Quinn_Brown. I would love to see it. Make this a fun thing and spend intentional time with the ones you love. Listen to "A WELL Life is full of Faith, Friends and Farewells" Pastor Chris' last message as the Pastor of River Rock Church. As we follow Jesus on the narrow road of life He leads us to various places to grow in faith, serve Him and to learn from the experiences. Some people live in the same place all their lives while others move around for new jobs, education, opportunities, or even better weather. Some feel forced to move because of circumstances beyond their control or to stay close to a loved one. One of the most stressful and most spiritually open times in someone's life is when they move to a new place they are not familiar with. A W.E.L.L. Life centers around Worshiping, Encouraging. Learning and Loving. That kind of life is blessed by the Lord and can lead to great friendships and ministry opportunities. You may share life with a friend nearby for weeks, months or years but even when they must move away you can still stay connected. Farewells can be sad, sometimes they make others glad, but they do not all have to be bad. Pray for that person or family who God is sending out to a new place, on a new adventure, to serve Him in a new way, to possibly help some other people experience that same kind of friendship and a W.E.L.L. Life. Be encouraged to have faith to follow Jesus wherever He leads you or your friends. Pastor Chris Teien. #RiverRockChurchMN
Last time, we met Dr. Kathy Raver, founder of Well Life ABQ. Well Life is a Direct Health Care Provider. That means that they work directly with people to keep them healthy, rather than only coming in when people are sick. They also tend to avoid the involvement of insurance companies whenever possible. That saves them time and money because they don’t need to have people on staff whose only job is to deal with the insurance companies and their ponderous levels of paperwork. Now, it’s time to get into their business model. Typically, most health practitioners work with insurance companies that are tied to an individual’s employer. The individual goes in with a problem, the doctor diagnoses the issue and sends the bill to the insurance company who pays a portion (usually most of it), which is taken out of money provided by the company which is either a separate expense or a premium taken out of the individual’s paycheck. Sounds cumbersome? Historical fun fact, that cumbersome model is the direct result of government intervention. Salaries were capped by federal law following WWII and in order to compete, employers started offering health care benefits instead of better wages. Even after the wage law was rescinded, employer-based health care remained and developed into the present mess. Fortunately, Dr. Raver has adopted a vastly simpler subscription model for Well Life. For $75 a month, members get unlimited visits and no copay, plus a few other benefits. How is that possible? For one, most people don’t go every month. All of that money goes into the bank to be applied to people who do come in. Second, as previously stated, with minimal involvement from insurance companies a ton of money is saved just in not having to do all the paperwork that entails. It’s amazing what you can do without middlemen in the way. What if an employer wants to provide benefits for its employees with this model? It’s easy, they just sign up for $75 times the number of employees per month. Their employees wind up with better healthcare and the companies save money in the long run because Well Life isn’t taking on a bunch of unnecessary expenses (no $50 aspirin here) and passing the costs onto an insurance company. Not to mention the fact that preventative care keeps people out of the hospital a lot more than the reactive model. So, why don’t more employers sign up for this way of doing things? If it saves money and has better results why isn’t everyone adopting the direct provider model? Because inertia is real. Most people, in most times, tend to be content to do whatever they are already doing, or what others have done before. Getting people to change directions to try something different, something uncertain is always difficult. A business is no different. When a business looks at the direct care model, they see an unknown, a risk, and if there is one thing the modern business hates, especially the big ones, it is risk. That doesn’t mean that some aren’t trying out this different model and having good results. The problem is that they are few and far between, scattered across the country, working with different providers. As more sign on, whether it be with Well Life or some other practitioner, more will follow. Success breeds success and slowly but surely, the massive ship that is employer-based health care can be turned in a new direction, one away from the status quo and towards something better. What can you do to help make that a reality? Sign up with TARTLE and be willing to share data related to your experiences with health care. Naturally, a business likes to do some research before making a major decision like switching how they provide healthcare to their employees. You can be part of that. By providing clear and accurate data, you can help them make better choices that will benefit everyone. What’s your data worth? www.tartle.co
Well, here is something we haven’t done for a while. Recently Alex and Jason were able to sit down and have a conversation with Dr. Kathy Raver, Founder and CEO of Well Life ABQ. Well Life is an Albuquerque, New Mexico based Direct Primary Health Care Provider. That might sound like a typical word salad and therefore a typical doctor’s office. However, it is anything but. Well Life isn’t held down by all the features of modern medicine that we take for granted today, it isn’t hampered by the system as it has developed and too many regard it as normal. Yet, it isn’t an overreaction to that system either. Well Life isn’t going to just hand you supplements and send you on your way. It is a serious provider that also isn’t afraid to give you some supplements if that is the best thing for you. Too often, healthcare really just means dealing with people when they are already sick, hitting them with a barrage of tests, a couple of prescriptions and that is the end of it. It really doesn’t have a whole lot to do with keeping people healthy. In fact, everything about the system is geared towards profiting off of people being sick, not keeping people from getting that way in the first place. Think about it, if there is nothing wrong with you, there is no reason to run all of the many expensive tests that are available which means that the insurance company can’t be charged a ton of money. In short, what we currently call traditional medicine is not traditional and it is barely medicine. Dr. Raver is trying to change that. Dr. Raver is doing that in her little corner of the world by practicing integrated functional medicine. This style of medicine is actually more traditional in that it truly is interested in keeping people healthy and correcting what is wrong when they aren’t, rather than filling people full of prescriptions that typically only mask the real issues while probably causing a few of their own. Naturally, they use all the benefits of Western medicine and the many tools for diagnosis and treatment that it has developed. Well Life is also not afraid to look to other cultures to see if they have good ideas on how to treat certain ailments. Therefore, Dr. Raver will not hesitate to suggest various supplements if that is really the best option available. In many cases, treatments like the kinds that she sometimes recommends often find themselves accepted by Western science, she’s just ahead of the curve. Another area in which Well Life is ahead of the curve is in the area of insurance. Anyone who knows anything about insurance knows that it doesn’t always deliver the peace of mind that it promises. All too commonly, it adds headaches on top of blood pressure as you try to sift through mounds of paperwork to find out your claim was rejected or that you’ll wind up paying much more than expected. Health care providers will sometimes order expensive tests just because they know they can make money from the insurance company. That kind of paradigm is anything but sustainable or responsible. By minimizing their use of insurance companies, Well Life is actually able to save a lot of money because they don’t need to deal with all the paperwork that comes with insurance. They also are able to negotiate their prices for various treatments, at times getting it below the cost that a person would pay with insurance. Well Life ABQ represents the kind of approach that TARTLE would like to see more of in the world. They hold on to the best of the familiar and look to find the best in the new, or simply the unfamiliar. Next time, we’ll get more into their business model and how they put it into action to help their patients stay healthy. What’s your data worth? www.tartle.co

I have spent quite a bit of time reflecting while I have been sheltering in place. One of my main ongoing thought processes had to do with different ways to heal myself from an emotional and physical perspective. What better time to work on interpersonal development sitting at home, sheltering in place during a worldwide pandemic! Strange… I know but I found out some wonderful things that I share on this podcast. I also have a wonderful guest who is going to share great information about energy healing and essential oils. Allysha snow shares with us her journey to wellness after years of chronic illnesses and pain. She found her wellness through energy healing and using essential oils. Scripture: John 15 The life of Joseph sets many beautiful examples for the people of God to follow. This is obvious from the fact that the story of his life occupies so much space in the book of Genesis. Joseph was a man who overcame. He did not forget God while facing temptation or unpleasant circumstances. Neither was he a man to sink into a pool of self-pity. Rather this great man of God had faith, courage, and determination; he overcame his trials.

By Michael Tetreault, Editor Today, we catch up with one of the most dynamic and unique individuals you will ever meet in healthcare. It is my pleasure to introduce you to KC Devine Raver, FNP-C. This is Part 1 of 3 in a Direct Primary Care Journal (DPC Journal) and DocPreneur Podcast Series on the trend and success of DPC-FNP clinics rising in popularity across the U.S. in 2018 and moving forward. As a membership family practice, called Direct Primary Care, Well Life ABQ is able to schedule enough time with you to actually get to know you and listen to you. Instead of quickly writing a prescription or referring you to another provider, we work with you to overcome your health problems through nutrition, lifestyle, supplements and even medicine when necessary. Katherine "KC" Devine Raver is a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. She has worked in a variety of settings. She was born and mostly raised in Albuquerque. She completed high school in Hawaii and earned her Bachelors of Nursing from the University of Hawaii. As an Army Nurse, she specialized in Pediatrics and spent most of her Army career in the Neonatal Intensive Care. She has also lived in South Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Washington, DC. She moved to Amarillo in 2013 and practiced as a Nurse Practitioner in a pediatric clinic that mostly served Medicaid and refugee patients. Having always been attracted to alternative treatment options, in 2015 she was able to join Well Life Family Medicine and start her journey into all the things Integrative Medicine has to offer. She feels that both models have something to offer. She returned home to Albuquerque in late 2016. Wanting to continue practicing integrative medicine, she has joined forces with Well Life in Amarillo and opened Well Life ABQ as an affiliated clinic. Why membership? Like a gym membership, you are investing in your health. Typically you would only visit your healthcare provider's office when you are sick. In this model, we are encouraging you to use your medical office for more than just "ill care". In addition to visits with your healthcare provider, you get discounted supplements, discounted labs and even some discounted medications. Well Life ABQ is also here when you are sick. Through the use of texting, emailing, same/next day visits to members and online/telemedicine when medically appropriate, Well Life ABQ is here. Well Life ABQ is a great option with or without insurance. Most providers have 800-900 patients on their "panel". They don't know who you are and they are so booked with appointments, they only have a few minutes to see you. Through the use of membership, Well Life ABQ is able to only have a patient panel of 300-400. That means you aren't just a number, you are a person. In addition to your regularly scheduled visits, we keep appointments (online and in-person) open for sick visits AND we can respond to questions in a timely manner. In our practice, we believe prevention is the key to lifelong health and wellness. We are committed to helping you get well, stay well and live well. It is our mission not only to heal, but to inspire and motivate our patients to embrace and follow a path leading to wellness and a healthy long life. On today's Mindful Monday we are going to talk about this concept called Digital Detox. I recently enrolled in the six-week-shift program with Scott Riley of the causeway living it's a accountability group to help me improve in 6 areas of health. One of the task was digital detox. You must be done with all electronics by 10pm or at least 1 hour before bed to go to sleep by 11pm. The same concept I preach if you go back and listen to the 6 steps on how to sleep like a baby. The episode really really helps if you have a sleep problem, you can't sleep or if you can't stop thinking. Go check out the previous episode there. The acronym was USLEEP and the U is unplug 1 hour before bed. I know first hand the benefit of unplugging before bed but have been doing it for a period of time last year but have not lately. I was not being accountable for the first 6 days I didn't go a day without being able to shutdown for at least 60 minutes before bed and my excuse was I needed to work on the podcast etc. And when I finally forced myself to do it I have not missed a day! It has made such a profound change in my life. I'm telling you. So if you are stressed, overwhelmed, and can't sleep or can't seem to shut your mind off. This will help you as well. I'll make a rare guarantee right now! Here is what I found in the past 2 weeks when I refrained from my phones 1 hour before bed. Freedom - I know some of you listeners might be thinking what the hell are you talking about Dr. Jon? Freedom from what? I'm not lock in a cage!! I am a free human being with a free mind. The answer is Freedom from the Human Data Stream. Which is the term I pulled from the book “The Well Life” by Briana and Dr. Peter Bortens, Freedom to be here. I know it sound cliche but I think we as a society are using the phone so much that the electronics have the power over us more than we realize. So number one is the freedom from our mechanical extension and the freedom to be with myself uninterrupted. Less compulsive - I've been catching myself checking my phones for no reason. I mean no reason at all besides just to see if there is anything going on in my email inbox and social media feed. Even though I turned off all notifications except text messages. Meaning I have to physically press the app to know that there is an update. I still became somewhat compulsive about that and I didn't like that particular behavior. The digital detox required me to essentially set up a new boundary. The new rule is “I don't” participate in any screen time 1 hour before bed. Not “I can't”. I train my brain to be aware of my own compulsion and HAVE A MENTAL DISCIPLINE to not follow any random thoughts that come up, Like “I wonder the name of the show that my friend mentioned to me earlier today” or “I wonder when's Amy's birthday so I can buy her a gift in advance”. The benefit of being connected to google or “The Human Data Stream” is I can find out the answers to those questions immediately. But the downside is I am spoiling my mind, I am following my mind wherever it takes me. Or I am being dragged by my mind wherever it takes me, even during a period of deep work. That can be very disruptive to me getting anything done. So during the day where I have access to my phone and emails, I see my own desire to check the phone and I have more control over it. So #2 benefit is I became less compulsive. Less Anxiety - I noticed that the phone is the source of restlessness. Since it's the access to the collective human data stream. Something is always up. Something interesting, something stimulating, whether it's the news or updates or whatever. There's always something that catches your attention. The question is what kind of emotion does it trigger ? And are those worth GIVING OR SPENDING your attention to? Because the information are mostly out of our control, and when we cant change it or do anything about it it makes us anxious. Better Sleep The research shows that blue light or lights emitted from the LED screens this trap your circadian rhythm are you natural biologi clock it disrupts the production of melatonin which is the hormones that helps improve your sleep. Focus - By refraining from the gadgets and screen at least 1 hour before bed allow me a window of time in the day that is electronic free. With the discipline I built in the short 2 weeks of digital detoxing only 1 hour a day, I notice a considerable improvement in ability to focus and do deeper work. I don't think the phone is evil. But I do believe with certainty that I have the tendencies to abuse it. And I am sharing this to find you all. I encourage you to assess and examine your behavior, your relationship with your phones and your electronics. Do you tend to get compulsive with it and if so have you noticed that lately? I encourage you to assess and examine your relationship with work, do you bring work to bed? Are you answering emails in your pajamas or in bed? Are you thinking about the project are people that you have to get back to because you have so much to do and so many things to be completed? Do you notice that you had a hard time fall asleep lately? Do you know this bad you have to play a movie or watch TV to help you go to bed? If you answer is yes to any of those questions you should consider trying digital detox.
