Are we failing our kids? I often ask myself this question. This generation is way different than when most of us grew up. I guess I am a geriatric millennial and times have changed. We are our children's first teachers. If we help our children at home with literacy skills, this helps not only your child, but also the teacher when they go to evaluate your child in literacy. Like many people struggling to balance everyday life, career, and responsibilities while maintaining their physical and mental health, she found herself, overwhelmed by chronic pain, depression and anxiety. After multiple surgeries, ineffective medications and failed medical procedures to improve her prognosis, she decided to take her health into her own hands. By the end of this episode, you will learn how being a self-advocate and turning back to the natural source of food, can change your health and ultimately your life. The teenage years are the hardest. I find myself questioning my ability as a mother. If I can handle the pressure, the arguments, the responsibilities and the frustrations that come along with this journey. I do know that the teenage years are hardest when you are the one experiencing the body changes, the hormonal imbalances, the adjustments of schooling, the loss of friendships, the wanting to become more independent from your parents. Sandy's new book "Mom You're Amazing" is out now! it is a great read! It made me feel seen. [Health] Did you ever stop and ask yourself, “why did I agree to that?” In the newly-released book,SIDELINED: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health, researcher and author Susan Salenger examines the many ways in which women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare. Salenger describes how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves. They choose their doctors carefully, visit them more frequently than men, and stay on top of all health information. Yet at the same time, women tend to inadvertently undermine their own care. They're so focused on members of their families that they sometimes fail to stop and ask doctors the correct questions when it comes to their own healthcare. As a result, they may end up with inaccurate treatments and unnecessary procedures. In this conversation, Susan and I discuss why women:Put others first and leave little time to care for themselvesAre too quick to put off their own needed care Are more concerned about offending their doctor than questioning their opinions/diagnosisFocus on the emotional aspects of their illness when discussing symptoms, yet when it comes to recovery, take the opposite approachFull Show Notes On The Blog HereGet your copy of Sidelined: How Women Manage and Mismanage Their Health Book HereSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/QuinnM)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Bingaman about values based budgeting. How finances are intertwined with how we create balance with time and freedom in our lives. At the end of this episode you will be introduced to how we can take what we value and use it when budgeting our finances and also having balance between work and home. Tracy talks about delegation to create more time doing the things you love and with the people you love. Time is a nonrenewable resource and as far as we know, money can be renewed. The conversation I had with Kelli Hayes Smith is very informative not only for female entrepreneurs but also every day moms who work and those who do not. Productivity doesn't have to be something that is connected to your work life but also homelife as well. As you will hear in our discussion, sometimes we just have to plant our feet on the floor as the first step. Kelli shares her intimate story of how systems became a part of her life and how she is now pouring her own strategies into other women. You will hear how she has a different approach to productivity than what I have previously shared on this podcast. I told her off the mic that I love that we have two different approaches but ultimately we are teaching women how productivity and shifting your mindset into what is a priority can get you into alignment. Please check the full show notes on the blog on how you can connect with Kelli and also if you are a female entrepreneur and want to check out her community. This conversation is one of my favorites on the show if I had to pick one. As I get closer to the age of 40 in a few years I have started to look at life differently, but what about my body? What changes will it go through? Have you ever been there? We hear all the things that 40 is the new 20 or perimenopause will be dreadful, but what if we can go into our 40s with confidence. If you are already 40, are you confident enough to model lingerie? Today's guest Rachel Peru a Body Confidence Activist and Host of "Out Of The Bubble Podcast", found that confidence and is now a signed model and confident after the age of 40. Body confidence is something as a mom we have ups and downs with, especially with the added pressure of the snap back post partum body or the scars and tiger stripes left behind after we brought life into the world, but what if, just what if, we no longer had to think about this? On this episode I am joined by Rachel Peru who calls herself a silver hair model and host on “Out of The Bubble'' podcast and we dive into Body confidence after 40. Rachel broke barriers when she appeared in a ground-breaking Swimsuits for All campaign with Ashley Graham, and her career was launched from there."I love being able to represent older women in the fashion industry and have worked with some amazing people and brands including JDWilliams, F&F Clothing with Davina McCall and alongside my body confidence icon Ashley Graham for Swimsuits for All. My favourite shoots are always swimwear and lingerie and now I'm 50 I feel like I'm just getting started." -Rachel PeruFull Show Notes: https://www.quinnmenier.com/finding-body-confidence-after-the-age-of-40/Biggest takeaways from our conversationDon't think about it (your body). You are whole and enough. What Rachel would say to a younger girl/lady who struggles with body confidence? Momma's Morning Cup Is One! Last year I was building an online course for busy moms and specifically special needs families. I invested a lot of money to be trained by one of the best, if not the best online course creators herself Amy Porterfield. I had accountability partners who are amazing ladies and helped me every step of the way, well we helped each other. Somewhere along the way I backed up and thought about how I can teach these strategies to families and not build that connection first? It wasn't possible. I then thought, well should I solely focus on special needs families like I have for the past 6 years or should I connect with the root and foundation of most families, the mother. SEASON 1 FINALEAs we wrap up the last of The Assignment series, I want to talk about our assignment as a mother. Let's recap what assignment means. Assignment means a job or duty that is given to someone a task someone is required to do.We talked about our assignment as a woman which I said, “Now, if you want to look at the definition, again, we were given a task to do. It will vary throughout our lives and environment, but only you can fulfill that role. Being a woman means we can be a mom, wife, sister, friend, daughter, leader, doctor, lawyer, scientist, influencer writer, domestic engineer, anything. I started a new relationship, no not with another person.. with myself! Going back to the previous episode in introducing “the Assignment.” I introduced the assignment of womanhood. What it means to be a woman. I said that our assignment as a woman can be whatever we want it to be. That's the truth. We are not limited to anything if we have the desire. The thing about having the assignment as a woman though is, it is not our identity. Our identity is forming our own beliefs, values, personalities, and opinions. I wanted to start a new series called "The Assignment" to finish out the year. If you are listening later on, it's okay. It's still relevant. Before I get into the series and what it entails, I want to tell you about when I was reading my new Bible, the TD Jakes Woman, thou art loosed edition. I bought this at the Woman Evolve Exhale 21' conference, which was hosted at The Potter's House, Dallas. I came across a page in the Bible called "Only You." It is a reference to Ephesians 2:10. Stay with me here because this message applies to all women. No matter what your beliefs are, I want to read it to you.Key Takeaways:You are unique! You are priceless! What assignment means.Different doesn't mean less than or more than, just different. In this series we will dive into the assignment of being a spouse, mother, friend and leader. *If you are listening on Apple podcasts, or iTunes, please rate and review the show so I can reach more women* Don't forget to follow me on Instagram www.instagram.com/quinn_brownSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/QuinnM)
I knew I was being to called to lead but I didn't know in what capacity. I didn't know if it was to lead a family, a business, community or women. I decided to start this podcast because I knew I wanted to assist other moms in creating an intentional life so they can live up to their full potential and what God has instilled in them as their calling and their purpose. But who are you? What is your identity?Something shifted in me when I took a girls trip to Dallas Texas for a weekend church conference, Woman Evolve 21 led by Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts.I will tell you this, Nedra Glover Tawwab gave an incredible message on having boundaries and the steps to prevent burnout. It reassured me that I am delivering the right messages. I tapped my sister friend and told her, I think I have a podcast episode on that.. look I help so many people I don't remember my own message. That's because the message that I deliver can be different for each person I talk to. That is a point I want to make about the Visionary Board Workshop, is that yes, you may be in the same virtual experience but you won't have the same guided plan when you leave. What's for you is for you. Key Takeaways: If I asked you, what do you want to be when you grow up, what would you tell me? In the last year moms have been faced with many challenges when it comes to finding the balance of working outside the home and inside the home. I surveyed moms regarding work and life balance as of right now in the current state we are in. I want to answer the most common questions I received. 1. How do you balance working from home and family? Time blocking is going to be your friend. Use 3 blocks of time and adjust how many hours you need in each block. I talked about the SAF model in another episode “Clearing Tolerations and Create work-life balance”2. How can I manage growing a business and working a full time job? I answer this question in this episode and also recommend going back to listen to my conversation with Jamie Trull. 3. How to find time to spend with family? 4. How do I reach my financial goals in order to support my family?Well, I love answering questions that you all have for me, I hope that you find these answers helpful. I have more questions that I will answer at a later time as I don't want to increase the overwhelm with information. If you want to ask questions and want me to answer them on the show here are 2 ways you can do this. I decided to check out the new limited series on Netflix “Maid.” I typically would just breeze right past shows like this because it looked like it would be a “slow” show where it took a long time to get to the point. I wrote everything I could to share my thoughts and feelings about the accurate depiction of a single mother, the caregiver role, the human service worker role, domestic violence victim role and the once a recipient of government assistance role. Key takeaways in this episode; What domestic violence is.The cycle of government assistance. What motherhood is really like and the sacrifices we make.Signs of abuse. The characters and their role in "Maid"Overall this was the most relatable show I have seen. Maybe not in every area, but a lot of Alex's story reminds me of myself and people I have helped and know personally. What I want you to take away from this episode is that there is help if you are or know someone who is a victim of domestic violence, someone who needs mental health help, someone who needs medical, food, financial, housing, employment and legal assistance. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence states; “1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc.” https://ncadv.org/ link where you can find social services programs where you live. https://www.hhs.gov/programs/social-services/index.htmlIf you know someone who needs immediate help please call 800.799.SAFE (7233) or visit their website at https://www.thehotline.org/. So getting back into a routine after kind of being all over the place in the last couple of years it seems can be a daunting challenge. It doesn't have to be. If you had children out of school in the last year and now they are back in school, not only do you have to get back on track of a schedule but they do too, which can cause some push back. Key TakeawaysSet a bedtime alarm on your phone. Create the time you will wind down, and the time you will wake. Give yourself at least 7-8 hours of sleep. That's great self care. I don't encourage anything less. If you want to hear more about why sleep is important go back to episode 22 with Nisha Kunder about integrating wellness into your routine. I'll link it in the show notes for you. Next, communicate with your family when you are not available, meaning no phone calls after your routine has started, bedtime set for kids, when electronics are off, etc. Let everyone know the expected wake up time and departure time if they are leaving the house. If your children stay home, determine what time is focused. Give yourself a set block of when the child drop off is , school bus pick up, ECT. I want to leave you with a recommended book. So today in this episode, I want to teach you my planning strategy for a month at a time. If you get excited about planning, like me, you may have your own strategy and think, oh, man, another strategy from someone else. But I tell you what, I'm going to make this as easy as possible. You may want to incorporate some of this in your own planning strategy. But if you are not a planner, or you are thinking how can I be excited about writing down a to do list? Here's the thing. planning our goals are not just another thing on your to do list. Having a defined plan decreases, overwhelmed. Who doesn't want that? Let me tell you, if I don't write things down, it's not going to happen. And when you ask me later, I'm going to tell you, it didn't happen because I didn't write it down. Start by planning out your month by doing a brain dump for five to 10 minutes out of that brain dump. What is the priority? Set those priorities as your top three for the month, break them down into goals for the week. Then each day, break down even further to the top three goals for the day. Keep the month, week and day aligned. So you are adding random things. Your day should set up your week for success. Your week should set up your month, and by the next month, you have crossed off so many things, and you can start planning again and hopefully knock out your annual goals. Planning your month can be simplified to decrease your overwhelm. Don't overcomplicate my friend. We don't need a planning strategy to add chaos. But instead, get our mom brains in order. Once a single mom to three, and now a married woman with seven, crazy, right? I had a well life vision. years ago, I figured I would stay single and raise great humans, I would graduate college, finally, get my kids through school and find a great job. We were going to move to Georgia, where there were more opportunities for professional black women. And my kids will be in community with family that we have in Georgia, new friends, people who look like them. And of course, they will go to historically black colleges and universities. I mean, that was my dream. So Boy, that vision has changed some.So in this episode, we are going to explore creating a well life vision for your family. Well, my vision is just that creating a plan of where your family is headed in the steps to get there. Think of it as the roadmap and here are the steps: Why did we start a family? If you're a single parent? Why did I start a family? What does life look like for myself in my family in the next 10 years? What qualities does your family want to see in the best life possible and the next 10 years? What roadblocks may occur. What is our well life vision statement? So I would love to hear all about your family statements and how the family activity went. So come into the Facebook group and share with me and others. I had the pleasure of interviewing Financial Literacy coach Jamie Trull. Our conversation was very insightful as I have been watching Jamie's journey for the last 2 years give or take. Jamie Trull is a Financial Literacy Coach and Profit Strategist who helps business owners understand the finance side of their business so that they can make and KEEP more money.Prior to becoming an online entrepreneur, Jamie spent her career rising in the ranks of Finance Leadership in the Coca-Cola System. After leaving the Corporate world in search of a more balanced and fulfilling life, Jamie leveraged her background and her CPA designation to serve women-owned businesses as a Virtual CFO. Recognizing that there was a lack of truly accessible and understandable financial education resources for small business owners, Jamie pivoted her business toward creating resources to help fill that gap and impact more people. Today Jamie has helped thousands of business owners feel more confident about their finances through her resources and programs. As you will hear in this episode, I have nothing but appreciation and respect for the mission that Jamie has set out on to educate women business owners and how she saved myself and several thousand other women financially during the covid-19 pandemic. She continues to inspire and teach online financial literacy to those of us who have side hustles, full-time businesses and also connecting women to other women in the finance space who may not have a business and are looking for personal finance tips and strategies. I do want to apologize for my side of the conversation because it seems that I was having some internet connection issues that I didn't realize until after we recorded our conversation and that's okay because I promised you this show is real life and that's what you get with me! I had the chance to sit down with Mernie Mendoza to discuss financial literacy and how we can become stronger in building financial literacy. Our conversation was very informative and I suggest for this episode you have a pen and paper ready along with your morning cup. Mernie provides strategies to evaluate where you are right now and where you need to be. Mernie is a 20+ year veteran in the financial services industry. She takes an education-first approach so that her clients are fully informed about their options. Her goal is to provide the best service possible while educating her clients on the fundamentals of personal finance. Mernie's focus is for people to become financially independent and have peace of mind in their later years, which is why she focuses on tax-efficient income strategies for retirement as well as long term care planning. Although Mernie works with people from all walks of life, she especially enjoys helping women on their journey to financial independence as she is able to empathize with the unique challenges faced by women. In the previous episode we started talking about healthcare advocacy. I want to recap how you should advocate for yourself and others when it pertains to your health. Self-Advocacy makes you feel more autonomous and in control of your health and well-being. You are increasing your awareness and developing a high self-esteem. In this episode I want you to develop tools that promote autonomy in your health care and mental health. We explore your rights and informed decision making with consideration to your needs, values, beliefs, and preferences. The number one skill is speaking up!Just because someone is a healthcare provider does not mean that they don't get things wrong. If you feel ignored, say so. It's important to listen to your body and what it's telling you. There's a definite stigma with receiving mental health services and seeking help that needs to end. There's absolutely nothing wrong with seeking mental health services. Just because you are seeking services doesn't mean you will be diagnosed, be prescribed medication or be categorized as mentally ill or unstable. Everyone benefits from being mentally healthy. To Grab Your Copy of "What Happened To You?" How do we advocate for ourselves and/or others? Our children, our community? How about you? how do you show up for yourself or are you still on the fence of wanting to raise your hand and say something but then again, you don't want to ruffle any feathers? In this episode I want to help you discover the root of why you do the things you do. If these things align with your core values. A few things to keep in mind are, How would you rate your relationship with yourself? Do you love yourself? Do you speak positively to you, or do you have negative thoughts about yourself? It's actually more common than you think to have negative thoughts about yourself and have negative self talk. Let's call that negative thinking the Gremlin. What does the gremlin say to you? Do they say you're not good enough? You're not a good mother, employee, wife, student, friend? Let's explore how our values play into our health.
